ENEA, the Italian public institution for research on energy, new technologies and environment, is conducting a program aimed at supporting networks of small-medium enterprises (SMEs) in depressed regions of Italy. The program focuses on the experimentation of a business model for these networks and on the introduction of advanced tools and methods, mostly of concurrent engineering. The business model, developed within the program, has the basic features of a virtual Web organization. This chapter illustrates the organizational and functional model that has been defined in the framework of a cooperation between ENEA and the SMEs involved in the research program.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to focus on how investments in research and development (R&D) and advertising affect the performance of small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) during recessions. Design/methodology/approach – Contingency theory is applied to a data set of 376 Italian clothing SMEs during the period 2000-2010 to test whether investment in R&D and advertising impacts financial performance differently when contingent factors (such as market share, financial leverage and business model change) are taken into account. Findings – Empirical results confirm that market share and leverage moderate the effects of investments in R&D and advertising (i.e. intangibles) on performance, and also that changes in business models are an important contingent factor that explains performance. Specifically, the paper ascertains that a novelty-centered business model, together with investments in intangibles, positively affects performance during recessions. Originality/value – This study offers an input to the debate on how SMEs develop and sustain their competitive advantage during the recession. It contributes to existent theory by showing whether and how contingencies, such as a firm's market share and leverage, moderate the relationship between performance and investments in R&D and advertising in SMEs. Second, it addresses the call for additional data “about the strategic effects of business models and how they influence the positioning of firms in their competitive environment” (Amit and Zott, 2008, p. 20) by introducing business model change/innovation as a new contingency factor and by empirically testing its effects on “objective measures of firm performance” (Bock et al., 2012, p. 301).

Innovation is often associated with the introduction of new products or services in the business. Moreover, it can also be about changing the way business is conducted. Innovation embraces new technologies, improves industry methods, meets changing customer demands or needs, and creates better systems and processes. The organisation relies heavily upon its stakeholders, especially the employees, when it wants to develop or create an innovative environment in the workplace, either in terms of operations, processes, or methods. In line with employees' innovative spirits, innovation is deemed more critical for Small Medium Enterprises (SMEs). As the backbone of Malaysia's economy, SMEs' competitive ability is often measured through its innovative capacity. In essence, SMEs and innovation are synergistically integrated as innovative efforts are regarded as the source of economic competitiveness. However, the means for the firms to be innovative remain questionable (Makanyeza & Dzvuke, 2016). In the current scenario, to achieve long-term success, an organisation needs to support and enhance its employees' innovative potential rather than focusing solely on research and development (R&D) professionals, scientists, or specialists. Thus, this study is conducted to examine the effect of innovative work behaviour on Sabah's SMEs' performance in the Service Sector.  This is a quantitative research in which a total of 300 questionnaires were distributed to the managers of Service Sector SMEs in Sabah and 219 responses were received. The data collected was then analysed using PLS-SEM.  This study found that the innovative work behaviour (β = 0.393, p =0.000) were positively related to organisation performance. Hence, innovative work behaviour is crucial to be embraced by the employees of the organisation itself to enable organisations to stay relevant in the industry and keep pace with the environment's rapid changes.

Indonesian economy through Small Medium Enterprises (SMEs) is expected to absorb labor and contribute to the growth of Gross Domestic Product. However, SMEs lack both managerial and technical skills. This research is about business model innovation for SMEs especially in fashion and garment industry. Study used qualitative approach by mentoring four selected SMEs in Babakan Penghulu Village– Cinambo Sub-District, Eastern Bandung. The tools used to analyze them including PEST analysis, Porter’s Five Forces,Resource Based View, Value Chain Analysis and Business Model Canvas. Finding suggests SMEs to have business model innovation derived from value proposition. SMEs should build their own brand awareness. Moreover, as garment and fashion industry, design can be a particularly important part of the Value Proposition. SMEs could communicate its value propositions and inform their service through its official websites and other social media. Since the intangible resources include brand and design, thus SMEs should build brand image and innovate year by year. SMEs must hire designers and launch a series of new products offers under the signature of their own brands. Ideation to strengthen strategies derives from value proposition building block as a starting point. Moreover, Business Model Canvas makes strategy more focused and measurable. Business model innovation is expected to increase overall performance of SMEs.
