In this paper, based on the essential attribute of the asphalt mixture, the characteristics of the asphalt mixture creep deformation were analyzed. With the comparison of the theoretical and experimental results, the advantages and disadvantages of the common rheological models used as the reaction of asphalt mixture creep characteristics were studied. The characteristics of of the asphalt mixture deformation have been analyzed. For the accurate response of nonlinear viscous elasticity model of asphalt mixtures must be a reasonable combination of the characterization of deformation characteristics of various components, this paper reveals the rheological deformation of asphalt mixture of components and parts of correspondence with the proper models. Finally, the experimental data were given to verify the correctness of the proposed model.

The paving-heavy crude oils (PHCO) are natural cut-back asphalts composed by a high content of asphalt cement and a portion of solvents. These materials have been used in Colombia since the 90’s to improve low volume traffic roads. The existence of solvents in the PHCO allows mixing it with the aggregates in cold conditions. Then, before compaction, these asphalt mixtures require a curing process (i.e., process of partial loss of solvents from the PHCO) to ensure its proper performance. However, at present there is no consensus on the loss of solvents to specify for the curing process of mixtures fabricated with PHCO. Given this situation, this study assesses the effect of the partial content of solvents on both the mechanical response and compactability of asphalt mixtures produced using PHCO from the Castilla’s oil field (CA); a material extensively used in the East region of Colombia. The study included conducting and analyzing conventional characterization tests of the mixture constituent materials, surface free energy testing on both mastics and the aggregate, mix design, and characterization of both mechanical response and compactability of the mixtures fabricated using the CA and a control asphalt. Corresponding results led to identify and quantify a progressive improvement in both the adhesion quality of the mastic-aggregate interfaces and the mechanical response of the asphalt mixture as a function of the reduction of the solvents. These results suggest the convenience of compacting the asphalt mixtures fabricated using the CA after allowing a loss of 50% of the solvents obtained from the CA via atmospheric distillation at 360°C.

Abstract The municipal sludge characterized non-Newtonian behaviour, therefore the viscosity of the sewage sludge is not a constant value. The laboratory investigation was made using coaxial cylinder with rotating torque and gravimetric concentration of the investigated sludge ranged from 4.40% to 2.09%. This paper presents the investigation on the effect of concentration of rheological sludge behaviour. The three different rheological models: Bingham (plastic model), Ostwald-de Waele (power-law), Hershel-Bulkley’s were calculated by fitting the experimental data of shear stress as a function of shear rate to these models. In this study, the 3-parameter Herschel- Bulkley’s model fits the experimental data best.

Cognition is a complex and dynamic process. It is an essential goal to estimate latent attentional states based on behavioral measures in many sequences of behavioral tasks. Here, we propose a probabilistic modeling and inference framework for estimating the attentional state using simultaneous binary and continuous behavioral measures. The proposed model extends the standard hidden Markov model (HMM) by explicitly modeling the state duration distribution, which yields a special example of the hidden semi-Markov model (HSMM). We validate our methods using computer simulations and experimental data. In computer simulations, we systematically investigate the impacts of model mismatch and the latency distribution. For the experimental data collected from a rodent visual detection task, we validate the results with predictive log-likelihood. Our work is useful for many behavioral neuroscience experiments, where the common goal is to infer the discrete (binary or multinomial) state sequences from multiple behavioral measures.

In this study, air void contents and distributions of porous asphalt mixtures along the vertical and horizontal directions were quantitatively measured on planar images. Air void contents were determined using some image techniques; while the permeability was measured by the falling head test. Two aggregate gradations (G1 and G2) and three blow numbers (30, 40, and 50) were chosen to explore the effects of gradation and compaction effort on the porosity and permeability. Results showed that porosities and permeabilities are symmetrically distributed along the middle of the specimens; the porosities and permeabilities got the minimum values around the middle zone. A finer gradation or a significant compaction effort generally led to a lower porosity and permeability coefficient. In the horizontal direction, the air void content showed an increasing trend from the outside layer to the inner layer, indicating the nonuniformity of porosity distribution.

A procedure for modeling wheelchair-users undergoing vibrations was developed. Experimental data acquired with a wheelchair simulator were used to develop a model of a seated wheelchair user. Maximum likelihood estimation procedure was used to determine the model complexity required to characterize wheelchair-user's response. It was determined that a two segment rotational link model is adequate for characterization of vibratory response. The parameters of the proposed model were identified using the experimental data and verified using additional experimental results. The proposed approach can be used to develop subject-specific design criteria for wheelchair seating and suspension.


The analysis of the previous results of the study on concrete stress-strain behavior at elevated temperatures has been carried out. Based on the analysis, the main reasons for strength retrogression and elastic modulus reduction of concrete have been identified. Despite a significant amount of research in this area, there is a large spread in experimental data received, both as a result of compression and tension. In addition, the deformation characteristics of concrete are insufficiently studied: the coefficient of transverse deformation, the limiting relative compression deformation corresponding to the peak load and the almost complete absence of studies of complete deformation diagrams at elevated temperatures. The two testing chambers provided creating the necessary temperature conditions for conducting studies under bending compression and tension have been developed. On the basis of the obtained experimental data of physical and mechanical characteristics of concrete at different temperatures under conditions of axial compression and tensile bending, conclusions about the nature of changes in strength and deformation characteristics have been drawn. Compression tests conducted following the method of concrete deformation complete curves provided obtaining diagrams not only at normal temperature, but also at elevated temperature. Based on the experimental results, dependences of changes in prism strength and elastic modulus as well as an equation for determining the relative deformation and stresses at elevated temperatures at all stages of concrete deterioration have been suggested.

The compaction of asphalt mixture is crucial to the mechanical properties and the maintenance of the pavement. However, the mix design, which based on the compaction properties, remains largely on empirical data. We found difficulties to relate the aggregate size distribution and the asphalt binder properties to the compaction behavior in both the field and laboratory compaction of asphalt mixtures. In this paper, we would like to propose a simple hybrid model to predict the compaction of asphalt mixtures. In this model, we divided the compaction process into two mechanisms: (i) visco-plastic deformation of an ordered thickly-coated granular assembly, and (ii) the transition from an ordered system to a disordered system due to particle rearrangement. This model could take into account both the viscous properties of the asphalt binder and grain size distributions of the aggregates. Additionally, we suggest to use the discrete element method to understand the particle rearrangement during the compaction process. This model is calibrated based on the SuperPave gyratory compaction tests in the pavement lab. In the end, we compared the model results to experimental data to show that this model prediction had a good agreement with the experiments, thus, had great potentials to be implemented to improve the design of asphalt mixtures.

Background: Mathematical modeling in modified drug release is an important tool that allows predicting the release rate of drugs in their surrounding environment and elucidates the transport mechanisms involved in the process. Objective: The aim of this work was to develop a mathematical model that allows evaluating the release profile of drugs from polymeric carriers in which the swelling phenomenon is present. Methods: Swellable matrices based on ionic complexes of alginic acid or carboxymethylcellulose with ciprofloxacin were prepared and the effect of adding the polymer sodium salt on the swelling process and the drug release was evaluated. Experimental data from the ciprofloxacin release profiles were mathematically adjusted, considering the mechanisms involved in each stage of the release process. Results: A proposed model, named “Dual Release” model, was able to properly fit the experimental data of matrices presenting the swelling phenomenon, characterized by an inflection point in their release profile. This entails applying the extended model of Korsmeyer-Peppas to estimate the percentage of drug released from the first experimental point up to the inflection point and then a model called Lumped until the final time, allowing to adequately represent the complete range of the drug release profile. Different parameters of pharmaceutical relevance were calculated using the proposed model to compare the profiles of the studied matrices. Conclusion: The “Dual Release” model proposed in this article can be used to predict the behavior of complex systems in which different mechanisms are involved in the release process.

The paper considers some articulatory features of allophones of the vowel /i/ in the Altai-Kizhi dialect (spoken in the locality Ust-Kan, Altai) of the Altai language visualized by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). The Altai-Kizhi is the central basic dialect of the Altai literary language. In Altai, each rural locality represents a unique dialect, whose relevance of studying was emphasized by V. V. Radlov. Speech sounds of the /i/-type in the dialects of the Altai language are realized mainly as front variants with different degrees of openness. In the written Altai speech, the symbol “и” is used to denote narrow front non-labialized vowel; some variants of the Altai vowel /i/ are central-back differing in this from the Russian vowel /i/. Experimental data on the territorial dialects of the Altai-Kizhi dialect, obtained from its 6 native speakers (d1-d6) taking into account variable inherent palate height, shows both the common articulation bases of native speakers (clearly-expressed frontness) and their differences (variable openness).
