Originating from human thinking on the relation between man and nature, the ecological design outlook is a new concept that arose in recent years with great significance for the sustainable development of design. In fact, the same concept has always been running through Chinese classical design notions. From the ages when the principle that “in compliance with the rules under heaven, things are created for human use” dominated design notions, to the rise and prevalence of the later principle of “following natural rules of heaven”, ancient Chinese had always dealt prudently with the relations among human, nature and zao wu (creation), which benefits the contemporary ecological design.

Tsunzi understood completely the distinction between heaven and man, and laid emphasis on separate duty of heaven and man. The bounden duty of heaven belongs to the nature, and heaven has no will; while the duty of man pertained to the society, the society is conscious human activity. As to the relationship between heaven and man, he emphasized that man can recognize the heaven, that is to say , man can recognize the natural law, and make use of the nature. Especially, regarding man the most precious beings in the whole of creation as his foothold, Tsunzi laid stress on human activity and subjectivity. This article analyzes Tsunzi's ecological objective of oustainable development: Heaven Correlating with man; the establishment of subject status of man to nature; materialization of the ecological ethics goals.

The thinking of sustainable development not only respects the intrinsic value of nature, but also defines the human beings transcendent position in the world. At the same time, it determines specifically human subjectivity in the practice, and admits the legitimacy that humans use and transform the nature. Based the understanding of distinction between heaven and man, Tsunzi specifically set forth the eco-ethics practice theory of adapting the law of heaven and making use of it. His theory dialectically integrated human utilization, protection, rights, and obligations to nature, which not only involved human moral courage, but also embraced ecological moral principles of human practice as well as the ethical spirit of pursuing ecological ethic aims.

Religion (dharma) plays a vital role in the Hindu (Sanatana) quest for understanding and practicing harmony between nature and humanity that result into the formation of a cosmological awakening, i.e. 'transcending the universe.' The importance and applicability of such new consciousness is a sign in promoting global humanism in the 21st century, where environmental ethics and sustainability are the wheels of making the future more humane and peaceful. Arne Naess, who coined the term 'deep ecology' conceiving humankind as an integral part of its environment, gives credit to Gandhi. Gandhi’s contributions help to re-awaken the human spirit to self-realisation, finally leading to revelation promoting human coexistence with nature sustainably, mostly through re-interpretation of Vedantic thought. Under the SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals) the ideas of Gandhi are recognised as a path that makes human coexistence stronger, feasible and co-sharedness, sustainable in peace and harmony with nature. This essay presents ecospiritual contextuality and its vitality concerning a sustainable perspective in line with Gandhi's vision and way of life.

The current model for society’s development, based on the unconscious use of natural resources, points to signs of exhaustion, requiring a reflection in order to formulate strategies that overcome the challenge of coexistence between the relationship between man and nature. The use of tools such as sustainable indicators has been shown to be effective in the identification and understanding of socio-environmental phenomena and in the subsequent decision making by public management, assisting in the resolution of problems, and consequently, acting as a resource for sustainable development. This study aims to propose the development of an urban sustainability indicator for the municipality of Umuarama, in the state of Paraná, Brazil. In order to build the indicator, data from different aspects linked to Sach’s sustainability model are to be collected, and later put into statistical treatment to standardize it and make its comparison possible, resulting in its index, which is expected to analyze the current state of the local sustainability and sustainable development.

Abstract Based both on a historical approach regarding the evolution of the environmental education between 1960 and present days, and on empirical research as well, the author proves that the efficiency of the environmental education could be much higher if included within the broader sphere of moral and civic education and if it is driven by a more extensive ideal sprung from the fundamental human right to a clean and well preserved environment, by the contemporary moral and civil values. The author pleads and motivates for an increased capitalization of the humanities and social sciences, of art, of environmental ethics and aesthetics in shaping “the ecological personality” of the tomorrow people. When shaping these personality traits through environmental education activities, one must emphasize the importance of practice and applied actions aimed to protect the environment, and in general, the practice of civic-moral education methods.
