Contamination of air by solid particles is serious problem for human health and also environment, especially in certain regions of the Czech Republic and Poland. Small particles in nano-sizes are more dangerous than same weight of larger size. Negative effect namely of the solid particles depends on number, specific surface area, respirability and bonding of others substances (e.g. PAH, As, Cd, Zn, Cu etc.) which are higher for smaller (nano-sizes) particles compared to larger one. With the approaching winter, yearly problems with distribution of particles from small combustion equipments arise. The annual emission balance indicate that the proportion of small sources to total air pollution (PAH, dust) is surprisingly expressive [1]. For this reason mentioned above this contribution deals with measuring of amount, and distribution of nanoparticles produced form combustion of wood in small combustion unit. <br />For combustion test in grave-free stoves were used three samples of wood (wet spruce, dry spruce and raw spruce) and two combustion modes. Nanoparticles from flue gas were characterized by the aperture low-pressure cascade impactor DLPI (separation and weighing of particles in sizes 30 ηm ÷ 10 µm). Wood were combusted in the form of ¼ logs.

Abstract One of the main pollution types is air pollution, which has a significant impact on the surrounding environment and on living beings. Major source of air pollution is combustion processes. There are many flue gas treatment technologies around the world. In this paper a new, innovative flue gas treatment technology – fog unit – is introduced. The goal of the fog unit is to treat flue gases that are emitted from households. In the European Union, including Latvia, at the beginning of 2020, a directive will come into effect that will set limits for emissions and the effectiveness for incinerators in households. The main focus of this study was to determine the most optimal operating mode for the fog unit by changing different operating parameters: sprayed water temperature, sprayed water flowrate and types of nozzles (drop diameters). Results show that the most optimal operating mode in terms of flue gas treatment efficiency and recovered energy is at water temperature: 20 °C, sprayed water flowrate: 250 l/h and nozzle: MPL1.12 M. However, electrical consumption of water circulation pump leaves negative effect on this operating mode.

The paper presents the composition of atmospheric air as a mixture of gases that make up the solid and variable components, and the definitions of air pollutants are referenced. Gaseous and solid pollutants (dust) of the atmospheric air have been defined. Dusts were divided according to various criteria and their properties were given. Exemplary courses of immission of the fraction of solid particles are given, indicating a strong dependence of the immission on the seasons, days of the week and day and night. The sources and characteristics of artificial and natural pollutants in the atmospheric air are presented. It has been shown that the main sources of anthropogenic pollution in addition to industry and the automotive industry. Cars are a source of gaseous and particulate pollutants PM, and they also emit pollution from brake and clutch lining wear, as well as from tire and road wear. The main sources of natural air pollution were discussed, including volcanic eruptions, fires in landfills, forests, steppes and sand storms, as well as mineral dust (road dust) carried from the ground by vehicles. The properties of road dust are discussed: chemical and fractional composition, density, dust concentration in the air. It has been shown that the two basic components of the dust, silica and corundum, whose share in dust reaches 95%, also have the highest hardness, which may have a decisive influence on the wear of engine components. Various valuesof dust concentration in the air were presented depending on the type and condition of the ground and the conditions of use of vehicles. Abstract. Ensuring global food security requires a comprehensive understanding of environmental pressures on food production, including the impacts of air quality. Surface ozone damages plants and decreases crop production; this effect has been extensively studied. In contrast, the presence of particulate matter (PM) in the atmosphere can be beneficial to crops given that enhanced light scattering leads to a more even and efficient distribution of photons which can outweigh total incoming radiation loss. This study quantifies the impacts of ozone and PM on the global production of maize, rice, and wheat in 2010 and 2050. We show that accounting for the growing season of these crops is an important factor in determining their air pollution exposure. We find that the effect of PM can offset much, if not all, of the reduction in yield associated with ozone damage. Assuming maximum sensitivity to PM, the current (2010) global net impact of air quality on crop production is positive (+6.0 %, +0.5 %, and +4.9 % for maize, wheat, and rice, respectively). Future emissions scenarios indicate that attempts to improve air quality can result in a net negative effect on crop production in areas dominated by the PM effect. However, we caution that the uncertainty in this assessment is large due to the uncertainty associated with crop response to changes in diffuse radiation; this highlights that more detailed physiological study of this response for common cultivars is crucial.

London plane (Platanus hispanica Mill.) is considered as very tolerant to pollution and other stresses and in the Czech Republic it has been unaffected by important pathogens until now. However, in recent years the health status of London plane has been significantly deteriorating. During an 11-year survey it was found out that development of London plane damage was characterized by important fluctuations. Minimum value of population damage was 3.6% and maximum 97.5%. The health status of London plane was negatively influenced by long-term precipitation totals, higher total precipitation in May, low average air temperatures in January and May and higher NO<sub>x</sub> concentrations in the vegetation season. Using the multiple regression analysis a highly significant regression model was obtained, wherein the average air temperatures in January and May explain together 84% variability of London plane population damage. During the period of the highest damage, planes were moreover affected by the pathogen Apiognomonia veneta (Sacc. et Spegg.) H&ouml;hn. &nbsp;

AbstractThe European method for mapping lichen diversity (LDV) as an indicator of environmental stress/quality in the Czech Republic was evaluated to determine its applicability in this country. A modified Hawksworth & Rose qualitative scale for determining air pollution levels was used for comparative purposes. The study was undertaken in a partially forested and reasonably polluted region of the Bohemian Karst in central Bohemia during 2003. Measurements obtained by the LDV method yielded values in the range 18–65; measurements obtained by the modified Hawksworth & Rose method indicated zones 4–7, with a high correlation with the LDV results. The LDV method proved to be applicable in the region, but its implementation may be limited by the lack of suitable trees and specific landscape ecology.

Abstract The aim of the paper is to evaluate the effects of loose monetary policy on corporate investment of manufacturing firms in the Czech Republic during the period between 2006 and 2015. The main focus of the paper is on the effect of low interest rates on investment activity of Czech firms; additionally, the effects of interactions between interest rate and other firm-specific variables are investigated. The results indicate that corporate investment is positively associated with firm size, investment opportunities, and long term debt. Also, a negative effect of the cash position is found. Further, the findings show that monetary policy is a significant determinant of firm investment activity: when the monetary policy is loose, investment is positively affected. Furthermore, differences in the determinants of investment between highly and low leveraged firms were revealed.

One of consequences of the substantial market globalization is company transformations, which essentially affect the creation, existence or dissolution of companies; their number has been on the increase in recent years. They are mergers and acquisitions; mergers represent a combination of companies, whereas acquisitions involve selling, purchase or investments of companies. The main reason for a merger is economic growth which can be provided in various ways: these are e.g. decreases in costs, strengthening of a position in the market or access to new markets, decrease in prices and thus gaining new customers, access to knowledge or diversification of risks.The process of a merger is a highly demanding matter which includes the economic view (a choice of the right partner, setting merger objectives, preparation of merger project) and the legal view as the merger involves commercial law, reporting and taxation legislation. Discrepancies in the legal, reporting and taxation procedures in the area can have a negative effect on the process of merger and economic practice. The development of mergers and acquisitions and their success rate is related to the development of the economic and legislative environment. An important aspect is also the successfulness of mergers in the following year which will confirm (or not) the quality of all previous decisions.Research studies conducted in this field focus on mergers with the aim to evaluate procedures during mergers. An important part of research is an analysis of the effect of a merger on the evaluation of the successor company’s performance, changes in capital and capital structure of the entities. The aim of the paper is to publish first partial results in this direction of research. The first part of the research focuses on the creation of a database of companies as this is essential for practical verification of the results of the theoretical research. Due to the fact that there is no similar official statistics in the Czech Republic, its creation needs to be devoted great attention. It is also vital to define the transactions which will be included in the total number so that the results are relevant.

The aim of the work is to consider the mechanism of clogging the pores of the filter unit by small particles from the flow of filtrate inside them. Theoretical ideas about the process of filtering with the deposition of small particles from the filtrate on the pore walls and attribution of its fundamentals to restructuring from the original structure to the final structure allow to describe the process of clogging the pores using well studied concepts of known processes with phase transformations (in particular, crystallization). Based on this analogy and the approach to the description of the transformation of the "old" structure into a "new" one in time, using experimental data and their processing we calculated the rate of nucleation of the sediment centers (ωnucl), the linear (υlin) and volumetric rates of sediment plaques growth in the pores of the filter unit at different values of the process driving force, at different pressure difference in the system, and at different concentrations of solid particles in the suspension. Interpolation and extrapolation dependences were obtained for analyzing the mechanisms of sediments formation and growth for determining and calculating these (ωnucl, υlin) rates. Using the concepts of nonequilibrium thermodynamics to assess the influence of the driving forces we studied their influence (changes in the concentration of solid particles in the filtrate suspension and pressure drop across the filtering layer) on the dynamics of the filtration process. Using the data obtained it is possible to find the degree of clogging of through pores, which determines the filtration conditions, the filter septum type, and the filter overall dimensions.

Thirty years ago, Northern Bohemia in the Czech Republic was one of the most air polluted areas in Europe. After political changes, the Czech government put forward a research program to determine if air pollution is really affecting human health. This program, later called the “Teplice Program”, was initiated in collaboration with scientists from the United States Environmental Protection Agency (US EPA). This cooperation made possible the use of methods on the contemporary level. The very high concentrations of sulphur dioxide (SO2), particulate matter of 10 micrometers or less (PM10), and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) present in the air showed, for the first time, the impact of air pollutants on the health of the population in mining districts: adverse pregnancy outcomes, the impact of air pollution on sperm morphology, learning disabilities in children, and respiratory morbidity in preschool children. A surprising result came from the distribution of the sources of pollution: 70% of PM10 pollution came from local heating and not from power plants as expected. Thanks to this result, the Czech government supported changes in local heating from brown coal to natural gas. This change substantially decreased SO2 and PM10 pollution and affected mortality, especially cardiovascular mortality.
