This study aims to determine the effect of mechanical properties of impact, bending and tensile of bundle fiber composites with 5% NaOH variation of immersion time 0.5 hours, 1 hour and 1.5 hours. Then the blending and casting process is carried out to form a composite material with 20% fiber and 80% resin binder with a catalyst content of 1% and pressurized with press variations of 5 kg, 10 kg and 15 kg. The results of the blending and casting process are made according to the testing standard and then testing the mechanical properties. Impact, bending and tensile strength test results showed that immersion of 0.5 hours with 15 Kg concentration produced the highest value, namely Impact strength 94.89 J / mm2, bending strength 17.77 N / mm2 and tensile strength 27 N / mm2. Whereas the fracture form of the composite is the binding and fiber breaking evenly at the same point and the fiber is not pulled from the metric.

The use of borax solution as a preservative in wood and bamboo materials is well known in the community. A borax solution is an environmentally friendly liquid that can dissolve in water, so it is suitable to be used as a preservative within cold or hot soaking techniques. The ability of borax to resist insects and fungus attacks on bamboo has been proven, but the effect of the solution on the strength of bamboo must also be investigated. This study conducts to investigate the effects of borax and its additives as preservative solutions to the mechanical properties of bamboos. The bamboos preservations were conducted by cold conditions of immersion, while the mechanical properties were performed to understand the effects of preservatives. The result of this study indicated that 30% to 50% borax in the preservative solution is sufficient to provide significant increase in strength for compressive strength, tensile strength, and bending strength of bamboo specimen. From this study, the use of borax solution in preserving the bamboos materials improved the quality of bamboos based on its mechanical properties.

Two types of composites:(1) pineapple fabric reinforced polyester resin (Pineapple/PR) and (2) jute fabric reinforced polyester resin (Jute/PR) were prepared and the mechanical properties investigated for various gamma radiation doses ranging from 100-500 krad. Properties like tensile strength, Young’s modulus, elongation-at-break, bending strength, bending modulus and impact strength were increased significantly by 19%, 32%, 45%, 32%, 47% and 20%, respectively, at a dose of 300 krad for Pineapple/PR, and by 47%, 49%, 42%, 45%, 52% and 65%, respectively, at a dose of 200 krad for the Jute/PR composite in comparison to the non-irradiated composite. Gamma radiation improved the mechanical properties, but overdoses of radiation even caused a reduction in them.

Abstract The work aimed at the improvement of the mechanical properties of bamboo fiber-polypropylene composites (BaFPPC) by treatment of the fibers with CaCO3 at various concentrations of the solution (0.05, 0.1, 0.2, and 0.3 mol l-1). CaCO3 particles were successfully deposited in situ to bamboo fibers by means of ionic reaction of Na2 CO3 and CaCl2 aqueous solution at various temperatures. Then BaFPPC were produced, and various tests on single fibers and the composites were performed. The compatibility between BaF and PP matrix was improved by the treatments. The crystallinity of inorganic materials was significantly affected by the reagent’s concentration. A 10.4% increase in tensile strength and a 16.7% increase in tensile modulus were observed after fiber treatment with CaCO3 at a concentration of 0.2 mol l-1.

In recent years, studies regarding natural fiber reinforced composites have been increased as they are biodegradable with good mechanical performance therefore can help to overcome the environmental issue. As the natural fibers are easy to obtain, many industries have started to make use of natural fiber composites which are light in weight and possess good mechanical properties. However, the natural fiber composites also possess certain limitations most importantly their high moisture absorption ability which makes them incompatible at degradable environment. The fiber constituents of natural fiber composite may have different type of interactions at different environmental conditions. In addition, the involvement of nanoparticles in the composite may be the solution to overcome the deficiencies. In this research, the degradation behaviour of Oil palm empty fruit bunch (OPEFB) fibers reinforced epoxy composites upon exposure to degradable environmental conditions and the effect of adding nanoparticles have been studied. The tensile tests were conducted before and after the exposure to different environmental conditions including plain water, moist soil, brine solution, and cooking oil. Results shows that the addition of 10wt% of OPEFB fiber to the epoxy composites had improved the mechanical tensile strength up to 15.97% and composites exposed to brine solution have the most prominent sign of degradation in mechanical properties in both composites with and without nanosilica. Nevertheless, the composites with nanosilica have shown up to 24.28% improvement in tensile strength after exposure to different environmental conditions. The improvement were attributed due to filling the voids of the composites with nanosilica and good interfacial adhesion between the nanofiller, fiber, and matrix.

The physic-mechanical properties of filled composites based on secondary polypropylene are investigated. As fillers the dispersed wastes of processing of agricultural plants - buckwheat and oat husk, as well as needles flour and wood flour were used. Water absorption, abrasion, impact strength and bending strength of composites were investigated. It has been proven that oat and buckwheat husks can be effectively used in composites based on secondary polypropylene and replace traditional wood fillers. It has been shown that the physic-chemical properties of the filled composites depend on the structure and physicochemical interactions on the phase separation surface, as well as on the surface properties of the filler particles. It is established that for the production of filled composites with improved physic-mechanical characteristics it is necessary to use fillers with small specific surface and concentration of surface functional groups, and the acid-base characteristic of the surface should be closer to neutral. It is shown that these conditions provide for the formation of a uniform structure of the filled composite with less internal stresses.

Now a day’s researchers are focusing on natural fiber composites. In the present work composites were prepared with epoxy (Araldite LY-556) resin and ‘emu’ bird feathers as fiber. The composites were prepared by varying the weight percentage (P) of ‘emu’ fiber ranging from 1 to 5 and length (L) of feather fibers from 1 to 5 cm. The various mechanical properties like tensile strength, flexural strength; flexural modulus and impact strength were determined. An attempt is made to model the mechanical properties through response surface methodology (RSM). Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) is used to check the validity of the model. The results reveal that the developed models are suitable for prediction of mechanical properties of Epoxy ‘Emu’ Feather Fiber Composites.
