A new type of pellet binder was prepared with oxalic acid as sodium silicate chemical modification agent in this paper, the compressive strength of which improved obviously. It improved from 0.6 KN/a to 2.4 KN/a, when the amount of oxalic acid is 8%. Meanwhile, carboxyl introduced at 390°C started carbonization decomposition, and pelletizing properties wouldn't be affected without new pellet impurity. The analysis shows that adding oxalic acid introduces carboxyl only in the binder, but doesn't generate new functional groups; Polymer layer formed by carboxyl adsorption on sodium silicate gel particle surface limits colloidal particle growing up, and plays roles of refining colloidal particle and improving the bonding strength.

The production of ordinary Portland cement (OPC) consumes considerable amount of natural resources, energy and at the same time contribute in high emission of CO2 to the atmosphere. A new material replacing cement as binder called geopolymer is alkali-activated concrete which are made from fly ash, sodium silicate and sodium hydroxide (NaOH). The alkaline solution mixed with fly ash producing alternative binder to OPC binder in concrete named geopolymer paste. In the process, NaOH was fully dissolved in water and cooled to room temperature. This study aims to eliminate this process by using NaOH in solid form together with fly ash before sodium silicate liquid and water poured into the mixture. The amount of NaOH solids were based on 10M concentration. The workability test is in accordance to ASTM C230. Fifty cubic mm of the geopolymer paste were prepared which consists of fly ash to alkaline solution ratio of 1: 0.5 and the curing regime of 80℃ for 24 hours with 100% humidity were implemented. From laboratory test, the workability of dry method geopolymer paste were decreased. The compressive strength of the dry mix of NaOH showed 55% and the workability has dropped to 58.4%, it showed strength reduction compared to the wet mix method.

In this paper, the mechanical performance of an ultra-high-performance concrete (UHPC) repaired cementitious composite system, including the old matrix and the new reinforcement (UHPC), under various high temperature levels (20 °C, 100 °C, 300 °C, and 500 °C) was studied. In this system, UHPC reinforced with different contents of steel fibers and polypropylene (PP) fibers was utilized. Moreover, the physical, compressive, bonding, and flexural behaviors of the UHPC repaired system after being exposed to different high temperatures were investigated. Meanwhile, X-ray diffraction (XRD), baseline evaluation test (BET), and scanning electron microscope (SEM) tests were conducted to analyze the effect of high temperature on the microstructural changes in a UHPC repaired cementitious composite system. Results indicate that the appearance of the bonded system changed, and its mass decreased slightly. The average percentage of residual mass of the system was 99.5%, 96%, and 94–95% at 100 °C, 300 °C, and 500 °C, respectively. The residual compressive strength, bonding strength, and flexural performance improved first and then deteriorated with the increase of temperature. When the temperature reached 500 °C, the compressive strength, bonding strength, and flexural strength decreased by about 20%, 30%, and 15% for the UHPC bonded system, respectively. Under high temperature, the original components of UHPC decreased and the pore structure deteriorated. The cumulative pore volume at 500 °C could reach more than three times that at room temperature (about 20 °C). The bonding showed obvious deterioration, and the interfacial structure became looser after exposure to high temperature.

AbstractThe improper handling of smelting slag will seriously pollute the environment, and the unfilled roof of the goaf of the mine will threaten the safety of the mine. Expansion materials have attracted more and more attention because of their excellent properties. In this paper, copper-nickel smelting slag that has some active ingredients of gelling is used instead of traditional aggregate and some part of cement in order to reduce its pollution to the environment and its costs. For safety reasons, hydrogen peroxide was chosen as the foaming agent. Sodium silicate and hexadecyl trimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB) are used as additives. Our results showed that after 28 days of curing, the material has better mechanical properties and the early compressive strength of the material was enhanced by sodium silicate. The efficiency of foaming was improved by CTAB. It also proves that copper–nickel smelting slag can be used in expansion material. At the same time, the utilization rate of the copper–nickel smelting slag of this formula can reach 70%, reduce its pollution to the environment.

The amounts of the components in a microcapsule self-healing system significantly impact the basic performance and self-healing performance of concrete. In this paper, an orthogonal experimental design is used to investigate the healing performance of microcapsule self-healing concrete under different pre-damage loads. The strength recovery performance and sound speed recovery performance under extensive damage are analyzed. The optimum factor combination of the microcapsule self-healing concrete is obtained. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) are carried out on the concrete samples before and after healing to determine the healing mechanism. The results show that the healing effect of self-healing concrete decreases with an increase in the pre-damage load, and the sound speed recovery rate increases with an increase in the damage degree. The influence of the sodium silicate content on the compressive strength and compressive strength recovery rate of the self-healing concrete increases, followed by a decrease. The optimum combination of factors of the microcapsule self-healing system is 3% microcapsules, 30% sodium silicate, and 15% sodium fluosilicate. The results can be used for the design and preparation of self-healing concrete.

Abstract:. Suralaya power plant produces fly ash about 219.000 ton per year. Fly ash contents of silica and alumina as major components that can be used as precursors for geopolymer, a three dimensional networks aluminosilicate polymers. This research aim is to utilize fly ash for geopolymer made by mixing fly ash, fine aggregate, and alkali activator in a cubic mould and curing was carried out at room temperature for 7 and 28 days. After 28 days of curing the compressive strength of geopolymer reached 41.70 MPa. XRD characterization shows Albite (NaAlSi3O8) formation which has similarity to geopolymer compound. Fourier Transform Infra Red spectra show siloxo and sialate bond. Setelah 28 hari curing kekuatan tekan geopolimer mencapai 41,70 MPa. Karakterisasi XRD menunjukkan pembentukan Albite (NaAlSi3O8) yang memiliki kemiripan dengan senyawa geopolimer. Hasil spektroskopi Fourier Transform Infra Red (FTIR) menunjukkan ikatan siloxo dan sialate yang merupakan gugus fungsional khas yang ditemukan dalam geopolimer.Kata Kunci: geopolimer, abu terbang, aluminosilikat, alkali aktivator, albite, siloxo, sialate

Abstract A method for the chemical modification of silicate binder (hydrated sodium silicate) affecting the distribution of its nanostructure elements was disclosed. The effect of silicate binder modification on the resulting technological properties of moulding sands, determined under standard conditions and at elevated temperatures in the range from 1000C to 9000C, was discussed. Modification of this type is done on inorganic binders in order to reduce their unfavourable functional properties. It is particularly important when moulding sands with the silicate binder are used for casting of low-melting alloys. Therefore special attention was paid to the impact that modification of inorganic binders may have on the knocking out properties of sands prepared with these binders, when they are used in the process of casting non-ferrous alloys.

Abstract This research aims to produce a Compressed Earth Block (CEB) product using locally available soil collected from northern Jordan. The CEB mixture was further stabilized using Portland cement, lime, and sodium silicate. The research significance is based upon the urgent need of most developing countries (e.g. Jordan, Egypt…etc) to build more durable and low-cost houses by using locally available materials. As a result, CEB was identified as a cheap and environmentally friendly construction material. CEB specimens were thoroughly characterized by studying the mechanical properties and durability characteristics. Blocks of 30 x 15 x 8 cm with two holes of 7.5 cm in diameter have a potential for higher enduring, higher compressive strength, better thermal insulation, and lower production cost. Blocks were manufactured with an addition of 8 % for either Portland cement or lime, as well as 2 % of sodium silicate to the soil. The results showed that the addition of 8 % of cement to the CEB achieves satisfactory results in both mechanical and durability properties. Also, the addition of sodium silicate was found to enhance the early-age compressive strength however it affected negatively the durable properties of blocks by increasing the erosion rate and deterioration when exposed to water.

Geopolymer is a new class of three-dimensionally networked amorphous to semi-crystalline alumino-silicate materials, and first developed by Professor Joseph Davidovits in 1978. Geopolymers can be synthesized by mixing alumino–silicate reactive materials such as kaolin, metakaolin or pozzolans in strong alkaline solutions such as NaOH and KOH and then cured at room temperature. Heat treatment applied at higher temperatures may give better results. Depending on the mixture, the optimum temperature and duration vary 40-100 °C and 2-72 hours, respectively. The properties of geopolymeric paste depend on type of source material (fly ash, metakaolin, kaolin), type of activator (sodium silicate-sodium hydroxide, sodium silicate-potassium hydroxide), amount of activator, heat treatment temperature, and heat treatment duration. In this experimental investigation, geopolymeric bricks were produced by using F-type fly ash, sodium silicate, and sodium hydroxide solution. The bricks were treated at various temperatures for different hours. The compressive strength and density of F-type fly ash based geopolymeric bricks were determined at the ages of 7, 28 and 90 days. Test results have revealed that the compressive strength values of F-type fly ash based geobricks ranged between 5 and 60 MPa. It has been found that the effect of heat treatment temperature and heat treatment duration on the density of F-type fly ash based geobricks was not significant. It should be noted that the spherical particle size increased as the heat treatment temperature increased in the microstructure of F-type fly ash based geobricks treated in oven at the temperature of 60 °C for 24 hours.
