Tantalum oxide (Ta2O5) films at 400 nm thickness were prepared at room temperature by DC reactive magnetron sputtering. The effect of annealing temperature on film crystallinity, microstructure and optical properties were investigated. In order to indentify the crystalline structure and film morphology, X-ray diffraction (XRD) and field-emission scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM) measurements were performance. The optical properties were determined by UV-Vis spectrophotometer and spectroscopic ellipsometry (SE). The result showed that, with the annealing treatment at high temperature (700-900°C), the as-deposited films were crystallized to orthorhombic phase of tantalum pentaoxide (β-Ta2O5). In addition, the transmittance spectrum percentage indicated 87%, which corresponded to the obtained optical characteristic. The refractive index varied at 550 nm from 2.17 to 2.21 with increased of the annealing temperature.

Tungsten trioxide (WO3) thin films were prepared by a DC reactive magnetron sputtering technique. The thin film fabrication process used tungsten (99.995%) as the sputtering target, the mixture of argon and oxygen as sputtering and reactive gases, and silicon (100) and glass slides as the substrates. The effects of annealing temperature in the range of 200-400°C on physical and optical properties of the WO3 thin films were investigated. The nanostructures and morphologies of these films were characterized by grazing-incident X-ray diffraction (GIXRD) and field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM). The optical properties were analyzed by variable-angle spectroscopic ellipsometry (VASE) and spectrophotometer. From the XRD results, the as-deposited and annealed WO3 thin films up to 300°C were all amorphous. Only the WO3 thin film annealed at 400°C exhibited a polycrystalline monoclinic phase. The FE-SEM cross-sections and surface topologies demonstrated nearly identical thin-film thickness and physical grain sizes. The SE analyses showed that the thin films were all homogeneous dense layers with additional surface roughness. With the annealing treatment, the thin film thickness was slightly decreased. The SE physical model was best optimized with the Cauchy optical model. The results showed that the refractive index at 550 nm was increased from 2.17 to 2.23 with the increased annealing temperature. The results from the spectrophotometer confirmed that the optical spectra for the WO3 thin films were decreased. This study demonstrated that, the thin film annealed at 400°C exhibited the slightly lower transparency, which corresponded to the results from the GIXRD and SE analyses.

Bi3.4Nd0.6Ti3O12 (BNT) thin films have been prepared on Si (100) substrate by RF magnetron sputtering method. The crystalline structures were studied by X-ray diffraction. The surface of the films have been observed by SEM. The reflectivity was measured by n & k Analyzer 2000 with the wavelength from 190 to 900 nm. The optical constant, thickness and the forbidden band gap were fitted. The results showed that with the annealing temperatures raised from 600 to 750 °C, the reflectivity index decreased from 2.224 to 2.039, and the forbidden band gap decreased from 3.19 to 2.99 eV. The possible mechanism of the effect of annealing temperature on the optical properties was discussed.

In2S3thin films were deposited by flash evaporation ofIn2S3powder. The effect of annealing in vacuum and under sulphur atmosphere on the structural and optical properties of these films was investigated. X-ray diffraction studies reveal that the as-deposited films are amorphous. The formation ofβ-In2S3phase is obtained after annealing under vacuum at 693 K. Heat treatments under sulphur pressure lead to the formation of the above phase at a less annealing temperature (573 K). The energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) analysis reveals that the sulphurized films are nearly stoichiometric and those annealed in vacuum are sulphur deficient. Optical transmission spectra showed a slight shift of the absorption edge towards lower wavelengths. The optical gap value varied between 2.4 and 3 eV as a function of the film thickness and the annealing temperature.

Rutile N-doped TiO2thin films were grown by RF magnetron sputtering on amorphous and crystalline substrates at room temperature. The surface elemental analysis, investigated by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy indicated that the nitrogen content of the films could be adjusted up to values as high as 4.1 at.%. As demonstrated by the X-ray diffraction data, the as-deposited films (100 200 nm thick) showed no detectable crystalline structure, while after successive annealing in air for one hour at 400°C, 500°C and 600°C, the (110) rutile peaks occurred gradually as dominant features. The rutile phase in the films was confirmed by the band gap values of the deposited materials, which stabilized at 3.1 eV, for the thin films having 200 nm thicknesses.

We report the surface stoichiometry of Tix-CuyNz thin film as a function of film depth. Films are deposited by high power impulse (HiPIMS) and DC magnetron sputtering (DCMS). The composition of Ti, Cu, and N in the deposited film is investigated by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). At a larger depth, the relative composition of Cu and Ti in the film is increased compared to the surface. The amount of adventitious carbon which is present on the film surface strongly decreases with film depth. Deposited films also contain a significant amount of oxygen whose origin is not fully clear. Grazing incidence X-ray diffraction (GIXD) shows a Cu3N phase on the surface, while transmission electron microscopy (TEM) indicates a polycrystalline structure and the presence of a Ti3CuN phase.

Zirconium-doped MgxZn1−xO (Zr-doped MZO) mixed-oxide films were investigated, and the temperature sensitivity of their electric and optical properties was characterized. Zr-doped MZO films were deposited through radio-frequency magnetron sputtering using a 4-inch ZnO/MgO/ZrO2 (75/20/5 wt%) target. Hall measurement, X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmittance, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) data were obtained. The lowest sheet resistance, highest mobility, and highest concentration were 1.30 × 103 Ω/sq, 4.46 cm2/Vs, and 7.28 × 1019 cm−3, respectively. The XRD spectra of the as-grown and annealed Zr-doped MZO films contained MgxZn1−xO(002) and ZrO2(200) coupled with Mg(OH)2(101) at 34.49°, 34.88°, and 38.017°, respectively. The intensity of the XRD peak near 34.88° decreased with temperature because the films that segregated Zr4+ from ZrO2(200) increased. The absorption edges of the films were at approximately 348 nm under 80% transmittance because of the Mg content. XPS revealed that the amount of Zr4+ increased with the annealing temperature. Zr is a potentially promising double donor, providing up to two extra free electrons per ion when used in place of Zn2+.

AbstractUsing powerful synchrotron X-ray radiation of the beamline “Belok” operated by the National Research Center “Kurchatov Institute,” we perform X-ray diffraction (XRD) study of an intact, virgin (not subjected to any external mechanical loads) particle isolated from reactor powder of ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene. Along with the peaks originating from the orthorhombic phase, we detect the peaks characteristic of the monoclinic phase that is stable only under mechanical stress, suggesting that the mechanical stress that leads to the formation of the monoclinic phase and persists at room temperature develops during the polymer synthesis. The monoclinic phase gradually disappears when the particle is heated stepwise in increments of 5 K, and its peaks become undetectable when the temperature reaches 340 K. We contrast the results obtained for the phase composition of the virgin particle to those for a tablet prepared by compaction of the same reactor powder at room temperature. XRD analyses of the tablet were performed on D2 Phaser (Bruker) instrument. The monoclinic phase that originates during the polymer synthesis and the one that forms in the tablet during compaction have different parameters. We discuss the mechanisms by which these two different monoclinic phases originate during the processes involved.

This study is to investigate the crystallite development in nanostructured aluminium using x-ray line broadening analysis. Nanostructured aluminium was produced by equal channel angular extrusion at room temperature to a total deformation strain of ~17. Samples of the extruded metal were then heat treated at temperatures up to 300oC. High order diffraction peaks were obtained using Mo radiation and the integral breadth was determined. It was found that as the annealing temperature increased, the integral breadth of the peak reflections decreased. By establishing the modified Williamson-Hall plots (integral breadth vs contract factor) after instrumental correction, it was determined that the crystallite size of the metal was maintained ~80 nm at 100oC. As the annealing temperature increased to 200oC, the crystallite size increased to ~118 nm. With increasing annealing temperature, the hardness of the metal decreased from ~60 HV to ~45 HV.

Manganese oxides are of more interest to researchers because of their ability as catalysts and lithium batteries. In this research, MnO2nanowires with diameter about 45 nm were synthesized by sol–gel method at room temperature (RT). Effect of increasing the annealing temperature from 400[Formula: see text]C to 600[Formula: see text]C on crystalline structure of nanostructure were studied and average crystallite size was estimated about 22 nm. X-ray Diffraction (XRD) method, Energy-Dispersive X-ray Diffraction (EDXD), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Vibrating Sample Magnetometer (VSM) were used to characterize the nanowires of MnO2.

From the hard and anti-corrosions coatings, we found the chromium carbides, these components were discovered by large studies; like thin films since years ago. They were pointed a good quality for the protection of steel, because of their thermal and mechanical properties for this reason, it was used in many fields for protection. Plus: their hardness and their important function in mechanical coatings. The aim of this work joins a study of the effect of the thermal treatment on mechanical and structural properties of the Cr/steel system. Thin films were deposited by cathodic magnetron sputtering on the steel substrates of 100C6, contain 1% wt of carbon. Samples were annealing in vacuum temperature interval between 700 to 1000 °C since 45 min, it forms the chromium carbides. Then pieces are characterising by X-ray diffraction, X-ray microanalysis and scanning electron microscopy. Mechanical properties are analysing by Vickers test. The X-ray diffraction analyse point the formation of the Cr7C3, Cr23C6 carbides at 900°C; they transformed to ternary carbides in a highest temperature, but the Cr3C2 doesn’t appear. The X-ray microanalysis shows the diffusion mechanism between the chromium film and the steel sample; from the variation of: Cr, Fe, C, O elements concentration with the change of annealing temperature. The variation of annealing temperature shows a clean improvement in mechanical and structural properties, like the adhesion and the micro-hardness.
