Micro-arc oxidization of AM50 magnesium alloys was studied. The influence of micro-arc oxidization process was investigated; phase structure were analyzed using X-ray diffraction (XRD). Open circuit potential (OCP) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) were used to evaluate the corrosion resistance of ceramic coatings formed on magnesium alloys under stress conditions. XRD analyses indicate that the ceramic coatings fabricated on the surface of magnesium alloys by micro-arc oxidization are composed of spinel phase MgAl2O4 The corrosion resistance of ceramic coatings is improved compared with magnesium alloy substrate.

Ni/BN and NiCrAl/BN abradable sealing coatings used in turbo engines were prepared by plasma spray technology. The phases and the microstructures of the coatings were characterized with X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Corrosion behaviors of these coatings were investigated with open-circuit potential (OCP) and salt spray corrosion test. The results showed that the NiCrAl/BN possess better corrosion resistance as compared with Ni/BN.

Purpose This paper aims to report the influence of hexamethylenetetramine (HMTA) on phosphate coatings formed on AZ31 magnesium alloys. Design/methodology/approach These phosphate coatings were obtained by immersing magnesium alloys in phosphate baths with HMTA. The morphology and composition of the phosphate coatings were investigated via scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive spectrometry and X-ray diffraction. Findings The phosphate coatings were mainly composed of CaHPO4·2H2O. The HMTA concentration in the phosphate bath influenced the crystallization and corrosion resistance of the phosphate coating. Originality/value The polarization curve shows that the anti-corrosion qualities of the phosphate coating were optimal when the HMTA concentration was 1.0 g/L in the phosphate bath. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) shows that the electrochemical impedances increased gradually when the HMTA concentration varied from 1.0 to 3.0 g/L.

Using a sol-gel method and impregnation technology to produce nanoenamel coating on polished Ti-6Al-4V alloy. The morphology, structure and phase composition of nanoenamel coatings modified on mild steel were identified with X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electro microscopy (SEM) and tested by some electrochemical methods, such as open circuit potential and potentiodynamic polarization testing [1]. All of these method can select the samples which perform the best corrosion resisitance.

Corrosion problems are frequent and occur in various sectors of industries, resulting consequences of economic order and serious accidents involving human lives and contaminating the environment. The electrodeposition is one of the most popular methods for preventing corrosion, where the Ni-Co metal matrix has been widely applied. The incorporation of SiC nano-particles in electrochemical baths produces nanocomposite coatings to synergistic properties with potential application in anti-corrosion protection. The objective of this work was to develop the Ni-Co-SiC nano-coating electrodeposited on API 5L X80 steel and evaluate the corrosion resistance. Open circuit potential (OCP), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and potentiodynamic polarization (PP) measurements were performed in 3.5% NaCl solution. To correlate with corrosion behavior, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectrum (EDXS) and Vickers micro-hardness tests on the nano-coating were performed.

In this work, Ag-SiO2 nanoparticles were used as additives in an epoxy paint to evaluate their efficiency to protect SAE 1020 carbon steel from corrosion. Ag-SiO2 particles were characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD), dynamic light scattering (DLS) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Samples of ABNT 1020 steel were coated with an industrial epoxy based paint added with Ag-SiO2 nanoparticles. Electrochemical tests of open circuit potential (OCP) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) were conducted to evaluate the anticorrosive behavior of the investigated coatings when exposed to saline solution. DLS data show that Ag-SiO2 particles have average diameters of around 223.4 nm. TEM images highlight the presence of Ag-SiO2 particles agglomeration. EIS and OCP measurements show that addition of 0.5% w/w Ag-SiO2 to the epoxy paint could improve the efficiency of the anticorrosive coating, when compared to the epoxy paint without any corrosion inhibitor. Results also show the importance of developing efficient dispersion techniques to avoid the agglomeration of the particles that may increase the porosity of the coating and thus affect its corrosion protection efficiency.

Molybdenum (Mo) is an important alloying element in maraging steels. In this study, we altered the Mo concentration during the production of four cobalt-free maraging steels using an electroslag refining process. The microstructure of the four forged maraging steels was evaluated to examine phase contents by optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis. Additionally, we assessed the corrosion resistance of the newly developed alloys in 3.5% NaCl solution and 1 M H2SO4 solution through potentiodynamic polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) techniques. Furthermore, we performed SEM and energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) analysis after corrosion to assess changes in microstructure and Raman spectroscopy to identify the presence of phases on the electrode surface. The microstructural analysis shows that the formation of retained austenite increases with increasing Mo concentrations. It is found from corrosion study that increasing Mo concentration up to 4.6% increased the corrosion resistance of the steel. However, further increase in Mo concentration reduces the corrosion resistance.

In this study, the microstructural evolutions and corrosion resistance of aluminium/copper joint fabricated through explosive welding process have been thoroughly investigated, while stand-off distance was variable. Microstructural analyses demonstrate that, regardless of grain refinement in the welding boundary, increasing the stand-off space is followed by a higher thickness of the localized melting pool. X-Ray diffraction (XRD) and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) analyses recognized the binary intermetallic layers as a combination of Al2Cu and AlCu. Polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) corrosion tests revealed that a higher stand-off distance resulted in the increment of corrosion potential, current rate, and concentration gradient at the interface owing to the remarkable kinetic energy of the collision, which impaired corrosion resistance.

The electrochemical behavior of a three Ag-Pd alloys used in dental prosthetics construction for crowns and bridges was studied in artificial saliva using the polarization curves and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The corrosion resistance was evaluated by means of the corrosion currents value and by coulometric analysis. The open circuit potential of Ag-Pd are attributed to dealloying followed by surface enrichment with Ag and the possible formation of an insoluble AgCl surface film on the respective alloy surfaces. Our results have shown that these alloys have a somewhat good corrosion resistance in artificial saliva. When increasing the content of Cu, corrosion resistance decreases. The passivation of all samples occurred spontaneously at the open circuit potential. The electrochemical properties of the spontaneously passivated electrodes at the open circuit potential were studied by EIS. The polarization resistance (Rp) and the electrode capacitance (Cdl) were determined. The polarisation resistance of all the samples increases with the immersion time. The polarization resistances are largest and decrease when increasing the content of Cu. Cu reduces the Ag-Pd alloy corrosion resistance. The present study, thought limited, has shown that electrochemical characteristics can be use to identify such alloys. Knowledge of the in vitro corrosion behaviour of these alloys may lead to better understanding of any biologically adverse effects in vitro.

Abstract Ceramic coatings were prepared on the surface of 7050 highstrength aluminum alloy using micro-arc oxidation in an aluminate electrolyte with added graphene. To analyze the surface morphology, roughness, phase composition, and corrosion resistance, scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron, and electrochemical measurements were used, respectively. The addition of 9 g · L-1 of graphene to the electrolyte decreased the micro-pore size of the composite coatings and improved the density. In addition, with the addition of graphene, the roughness was the lowest, and the corrosion resistance was significantly improved.
