The aims of this study are to investigate the effect of Y (yttrium) addition in the Mg-Al- Ca alloys on microstructure and mechanical properties. In additions, the alloys were solution treated in order to achieve a better understanding of the precipitation mechanisms. The as-cast microstructure of Mg-5Al-3Ca alloy and Mg-5Al-3Ca-xY alloys contains dendritic α-Mg matrix and eutectic intermetallic compound at grain boundary. The hardness values of Mg-Al-Ca alloy with Y additions were slightly increased than that of Mg-Al-Ca with no Y addition. It is because of reduction of α-Mg phase and presence of (Mg,Al)2Ca and Al-Y rich intermetallic phase at grain boundary and α-Mg matrix grains. Also, hardness value of yttrium (Y) containing alloys was increased with increasing Y contents. Compared to Mg-5Al-3Ca alloy, maximum strength and yield strength of the alloys with Y additions have slightly increased with increasing Y additions in the case of as-cast samples.

In-situ (Al2O3+Al3Zr)p/A356 composites were synthesized by melt reaction technology and the effects of yttrium on microstructure and mechanical properties of the composites are investigated. The results indicate that the reinforced particulates Al2O3 and Al3Zr become smaller in size with yttrium addition, the sizes are about 0.5~2μm. The distribution becomes more homogeneous, the morphologies are spheroid-shape and ellipsoid-shape, the ambitus is blunt. The mechanical properties test results show the mechanical properties of the composites are greatly enhanced. With 0.4wt.% yttrium addition, the ultimate tensile strength and yield strength of the composites reach to 388MPa and 296MPa, which are increased 35.6% and 37.0% comparing with no yttrium addition, respectively. The effect mechanisms of yttrium are discussed.

The effects of the Al content on the as-cast microstructure and mechanical properties of Mg-xAl-0.7Si based magnesium alloys which contained 1%Zn, 0.25%Mn, 0.4%Sb and 0.25%RE were investigated by optical microscopy(OM), scanning electron microscopy(SEM), X-ray diffraction(XRD) analysis and tensile testing. The results indicated that the effects of the Al content from 6% to 8% on the alloy phase types of the experimental alloys were not obvious, and the as-cast microstructure of the experimental alloys with different Al content were composed mainly of the α-Mg matrix, Mg17Al12 phase, Mg2Si phase and Mg3Sb2 phase. The Chinese script morphology of the Mg2Si phase was very obvious in the experimental alloy with 6%Al. With the increase of Al content from 6% to 8%, the yield strength of the experimental Mg-xA1-0.7Si based alloys at room temperature increased, but the yield strength of the experimental Mg-xA1-0.7Si based alloys at 150 °C decreased.

The aims of this research are to investigate the effect of Sm addition in Mg-Al-Ca alloys on microstructure and mechanical properties. Sm addition to Mg-5Al-3Ca based alloys results in the change from dendritic to equiaxed grain morphorlogy and formation of Al-Sm rich itermetallic compounds at grain boundary and α-Mg matrix. And these Al-Sm rich intermetallic compounds were dispersed homogeously and stabilized at high temperature. And maximum yield and ultimate strength value was obtained at Mg-5Al-3Ca-2Sm alloys at elevated temperature because of homogeneous dispersion of stable Al-Sm rich intermetallic compound at high temperature.

AbstractThe effects of Y on microstructure and mechanical properties of as-cast AZ80–2Sn magnesium alloys were investigated by optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction. Y addition not only changes the as-cast microstructure but also influences the mechanical properties of AZ80–2Sn alloy. Unmodified AZ80–2Sn alloys under casting state show that Mg

The effect of tempering time on the microstructure and mechanical properties of SA738 Gr.B nuclear power steel was studied using SEM, TEM and thermodynamic software, and its precipitation and microstructure evolution during tempering were clarified. The results showed that SA738 Gr.B nuclear power steel has better comprehensive mechanical properties after tempering at 650 °C for 1h. With the extension of the tempering time, M3C transformed into M23C6 with increasing size, which affected the yield strength and impact energy. When the tempering time is 8h ~ 10h, due to the transformation of M3C to M23C6, the composition of matrix around the carbide changed, causing the temperature of Ac1 dropped, forming twin-martensite which deteriorated the impact toughness of the steel.

In this work, a titanium–tantalum carbonitride based cermet, with cobalt as the binder phase and boron as a sintering additive, was developed by a mechanically induced self-sustaining reaction process using two different methodologies. The boron additive was added to prevent the formation of brittle intermetallic compounds generally formed during the liquid phase sintering step due to the excessive ceramic dissolution into the molten binder phase. A systematic study was carried out to understand the effects of boron addition on the nature of the phases, microstructure, and mechanical properties of cermets. With the boron addition, the formation of two different boride solid solutions, i.e., (Ti,Ta)B2 and (Ti,Ta)3B4, was observed. Moreover, the nature of the binder was also modified, from the (Ti,Ta)Co2 brittle intermetallic compound (for cermets without boron addition) to ductile and tough (Ti,Ta)Co3 and α-Co phases (for cermets with boron addition). These modifications caused, as a general trend, the increase of hardness and toughness in cermets.

The effect of beryllium hardening has been studied. Beryllium is sintered by method of hot isostatic pressing (HIP), depending on the temperature of powders pressing. The research results of electron microscopic studies were the base for demonstrating formation of the hydraulic phase at the grain boundary of sintered beryllium and influence of the reinforcing phase on the mechanical properties of the HIP blank. The dependence of beryllium precision elastic limit and conventional yield strength from the size of the reinforcing particles of beryllium oxide has been found. The obtained equation provides a description of the “dispersion-grain-boundary" mechanism of isostatic pressed Beryllium hardening.
