Nano sized TiO2particles were prepared by sol-gel method. TiO2nano particles were dispersed in zinc-nickel sulphate electrolyte and thin film of Zn-Ni-TiO2composite was generated by electrodeposition on mild steel plates. The effect of TiO2on the corrosion behavior and hardness of the composite coatings was investigated. The film was tested for its corrosion resistance property using electrochemical, weight loss, and salt spray methods. The paper revealed higher resistance of composite coating to corrosion. Microhardness of the composite coating was determined. Scanning electron microscope images and X-ray diffraction patterns of coating revealed its fine-grain nature. Average crystalline size of the composite coating was calculated. The anticorrosion mechanism of the composite coating was also discussed.

Abstract Nano composite coatings on HSLA ASTM A860 alloy, adds to the barrier efficacy by increase in the microhardness, wear and corrosion resistance of the substrate material. Additionally, reduction of delamination of the nano composite coating sample is ascertained. Ball milling is availed to curtail the coating samples (Al2O3/ZrO2) to nano size, for forming a electrodeposited product on the substrate layer. The curtailment in grain size was ascertained to be 17.62% in Ni-Al2O3/ZrO2 nano composite coating. During the deposition process, due to the presence of Al2O3/ZrO2 nano particles an increase in cathode efficiency is ascertained. An XRD analysis of the nano composite coating indicates a curtailment in grain size along with increase in the nucleation sites causing a surge in the growth of nano coating layer. In correlation to uncoated HSLA ASTM A36 alloy sample, a surge in compressive residual stress by 47.14%, reduction of waviness by 32.14% (AFM analysis), upsurge in microhardness by 67.77% is ascertained in Ni-Al2O3/ZrO2 nano composite coating. Furthermore, in nano coated Ni-Al2O3/ZrO2 composite a reduction is observed pertaining to weight loss and friction coefficients by 27.44% and 13% in correlation to plain uncoated alloy respectively. A morphology analysis after nano coating indicates, Ni-Al2O3/ZrO2 particles occupy the areas of micro holes, reducing the wide gaps and crevice points inside the matrix of the substrate, enacting as a physical barrier to upsurge the corrosion resistance by 67.72% in correlation to HSLA ASTM A860 base alloy.

The electroless nickel-phosphor coatings containing molybdenum disulfide nanoparticles were prepared and analyzed in this paper. The effects of incorporation of MoS2 into the Ni-P coating on the morphology of the coating surface and corrosion properties were also studied. Corrosion tests were conducted inside a salt spray box with NaCl solution (5.0 wt%). The corrosional surfaces were studied and analyzed through optical microscope, X-ray spectrometer (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The investigation on the relationship between heat-treatment and the corrosion resistance of the coatings showed that the corrosion resistance of the composite coating became worse because of the occurrence of transformation from non-crystalline to crystalline, and then increased the metastable intergradation of the composite coating. Meanwhile, the experimental results also showed that corrosion resistance of the coating containing MoS2 was higher than that of steel substrate. The corrosion mechanism of the composite coatings was mainly ascribed to the formation of micro-cell around the nanosized MoS2 particles, and the active ion like Cl- destroyed the surface film and induced the corrosion towards the inside part of coating.

In order to enhance the corrosion resistance of mooring chain, the composite coatings are carried out on the surface of 22MnCrNiMo steel for mooring chain by double-pulsed electrodeposition technology using centrifugal force in the rotating device. The microstructure and anti-corrosion performance of the composite coatings have been investigated experimentally. This paper mainly focuses on the experimental work to determine the structural characteristics and corrosion resistance of composite coatings in the presence of nano-SiC. The results show that the presence of nano-SiC has a significant effect on the preparation of composite coating during the process. The surface of the coating becomes compact and smooth at a moderate concentration of nano-SiC particles. Furthermore, the best corrosion resistance of the composite coatings can be obtained when the concentration of nano-SiC particles is 2.0[Formula: see text]g.L[Formula: see text] after salt spray treatment.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to examine the performance of a fastener composite coating system, sherardized (SD) coating/zinc-aluminum (ZA) coating whether it has good performance in marine environment. Design/methodology/approach In this paper, SD coating was fabricated on fastener surface by solid-diffusion method. ZA coating was fabricated by thermal sintering method. Corrosion behaviours of the composite coating were investigated with potentiodynamic polarization curves, open circuit potential and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy methods. Findings Neutral salt spray (NSS) and deep sea exposure tests revealed that the composite coating had excellent corrosion resistance. Polarization curve tests showed that corrosion current density of the sample with composite coating was significantly decreased, indicating an effective corrosion protection of the composite coating. OCP measurement of the sample in NaCl solution demonstrated that the composite coating had the best cathodic protection effect. The good corrosion resistance of the composite coating was obtained by the synergy of SD and ZA coating. Practical implications SD/ZA coating can be used in marine environment to prolong the life of carbon steel fastener. Social implications SD/ZA composite coating can reduce the risk and accident caused by failed fastener, avoid huge economic losses. Originality/value A new kind of composite coating was explored to protect the carbon steel fastener in marine environment. And the composite coating has the long-term anti-corrosion performance both in simulated and marine environment test.

To improve the corrosion resistance on Q235 low carbon steel, in this paper, tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS), N-dodecyl trimethoxysilane and γ-(2,3-epoxypropoxy) propytrimethoxysilane (KH560) were used to make organic-inorganic hybrid sol-gel film. Cross cut test adhesion method, neutral salt spray test, electrochemical test and film protective efficiency were taken to value the corrosion resistance property. The corrosion topography was studied by optical microscope. In addition, potentiodynamic polarization, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) curves and equivalent electric circuit fitting were used to analyze the corrosion mechanism. The cross cut adhesion of sol-gel film can reach 1 class and the protection class can attain 5 class after 72 hours neutral salt spray test. According to the potentiodynamic polarization curve analysis, the corrosion potential of sol-gel film coating sample after 0.5 hours immersion was -0.46 V (vs. SCE) on the 0.1 Hz, and its corrosion current density was 4.74×10-7 A·cm-2. The corrosion potential of bare Q235 low carbon steel plate after 0.5 hours immersion was -0.78 V (vs. SCE) on the 0.1 Hz, and its corrosion current density was 4.75×10-6 A·cm-2. The impedance value on 0.1 Hz (|Z|0.1Hz) (1.27×106 Ω·cm2) of sol-gel film coating sample was more than three orders of magnitude higher than the value of the low carbon steel plate. Even dipping in 3.5 wt. % NaCl for 72 hours, the |Z|0.1Hz value of sol-gel coating sample was still one order of magnitude higher than the low carbon steel plate with 0.5 hours immersion. Sol-gel film with excellent adhesion can significantly improve the corrosion resistance of low carbon steel plate. Sol-gel film can increase the protection efficiency of low carbon steel plate by 90%.

AbstractChrome plating is used to improve the properties of metal surfaces like hardness, corrosion resistance and wear resistance in machine building. To further improve these properties, an electrodeposited chromium coating on steel, modified with nanodiamond particles is proposed. The nanodiamond particles (average size 4 nm measured by TEM) are produced by detonation synthesis (NDDS). The composite coating (Cr+NDDS) has an increased thickness, about two times greater microhardness and finer micro-structure compared to that of unmodified chromium coating obtained under the same galvanization conditions. In the microstructure of specimen obtained from chrome electrolyte with concentration of NDDS 25 g/l or more, “minisections” with chromium shell were found. They were identified by metallographic microscope and X-ray analyser on etched section of chromium plated sample. The object of further research is the dependence of the presence of NDDS in the composite coating from the nanodiamond particles concentration in the chroming electrolyte.

Electrodeposited Zn and Zn-Fe alloy have been applied widely to protect steel from corrosion, but the property of coating still needs to be improved. In this paper, Zn-Fe-SiO2 composite coatings are electrodeposited from Zn-Fe alloy electrolyte containing SiO2 particles. Zinc based coatings with Fe% >1%(mass) are deposited from sulfate bath, and coatings with Fe% <1%(mass) are deposited from chloride bath. Particle content in the composite coating generally increases with particle concentration under an adequate agitation and then tends to saturation. The optimum particle content in the composite coating is 0.5%(mass). Corrosion resistance, porosity, hydrogen embrittlement and surface morphology of Zn-Fe-SiO2 composite coatings have been tested and compared with electrodeposited Zn and Zn-Fe alloy. The data implies that Zn-Fe-SiO2 composite coating has the best corrosion resistance, lowest porosity, lowest hydrogen content and the finest crystal. All the results show that Zn-Fe-SiO2 composite coating is satisfactory to be used as anti-corrosion material for steel and has a great future in application.

ABSTRACT1H-13C and 1H- 29Si CP/MAS NMR spectroscopy has been used to characterize the structure of sol-gel derived hybrid materials prepared from 3-glycidoxypropyltrimethoxysilane (GLYMO) and tetraethylorthosilicate (TEOS) as a function of hydrolysis water ratio and organic content. 1H-13C CP/MAS NMR data indicate that the concentration of hydrolysis water (R value) has a fundamental effect on the nature of the acid-catalyzed hydrolysis and ring opening products. 1H-29Si CP/MAS NMR data suggest that for low R values, the ormosils are composed of a silica network with epoxide groups randomly dispersed throughout. At high R values, epoxide functionalities were found to coat the surfaces of dense silica particles. Salt spray analysis indicates that the corrosion resistance behavior of thin films derived from GLYMOTEOS ormosils decreases as the concentration of hydrolysis water increases and improves as the organic content in the film increases. These observations can be related to the underlying thin film structure.

Electroless composite coatings have been vastly used in various industries during last decades due to their good properties, such as corrosion and wear resistance, hardness and uniform thickness. In this paper, co-deposition of TiO 2 nano-particles with Nickel-Phosphorus electroless coatings on API-5L-X65 steel substrates was investigated. Surface morphology and composition of coatings were studied via SEM and EDX, respectively. XRD analyses showed that these coatings had amorphous structure with TiO 2 crystalline particles. TiO 2 nano-particles increased microhardness of coatings. Corrosion resistance of these coatings was tested using linear polarization in 0.5M sulfuric acid electrolyte. Results showed that NiP - TiO 2 electroless composite coatings increased corrosion resistance of substrates.
