A linguistic analysis of a literary text: Lexical cohesion in 'My broer se kraai' In this article the positive interaction between language and literature is investigated from a text-linguistic perspective. In text linguistics linguistic investigation is at stake as it attempts to establish the textuality of linguistic structures with the help of as many linguistic means as possible (Carstens, 1997:7). In this article a literary text is used to obtain knowledge of the nature of the language used in the text, while at the same time linguistics is applied to find out more about the literary text – in this case “My broer se kraai” – the short story that is analysed. Furthermore, this article emphasizes the contribution of lexical cohesion in the teaching of literature. Research already undertaken reveals that different types of lexical cohesion are interwoven in a text and form a unit that links with the theme of the given text. The lexical cohesion singled out in the text will not necessarily have the same value and meaning for every reader. What is important, however, is that cohesion has achieved its purpose if the reader is able to experience and understand the text as a coherent unit.

One of the major issues in contemporary text linguistics is the analysis of the cognitive principles of distributing information in a literary text. Literary text unlike other types of the texts holds subtextual and conceptual information which could be encoded by the readers when they identify foregrounded parts of the text. Foregrounding is the type of cognitive principles of distributing information in the text and its main function is guiding the readers in interpretation of hidden and conceptual message of the text by showing some signals (important extracts) to the readers. In this article, the types and techniques of foregrounding are discussed, and their usages are observed in the short story The Luncheon by S. Maugham.

One of the most important problems of text linguistics is the structure`s study of literary text, the principles of its organization in accordance with the rules of composition, which involve the division of the text into interconnected parts. In this regard, it is necessary to study the compositionally significant elements of the text and their role in the formation of the whole paper. In the text there are segments that differ in form (description, dialogue, monologue, internal monologue, etc.). These segments differ from each other not only syntactically, but also in functional orientation and different significance in the text. The use of heterogeneous elements is the principle of composition and the basic structural law of the literary text. The article is devoted to different types of the text entries that focus the reader's attention on the necessary information and contribute to the expressiveness, emotionality and aesthetic effect. Such elements of the text include off-topic units of the compositional structure of the text: episodes, remarks, notes, insert constructions and author's digressions. From the standpoint of semiotic theory, off-topic units of the text are considered as metatextual elements that cohere the text, switch the addressee's attention to the most important plot moments, help to navigate in the text space. The note is a clarifying text placed outside the text that performs the function of explaining the information of the main text. The remark is a textual introduction that serves to specify the information about the circumstances of the action, appearance and behavior of the characters of the main text. The insert is a compositionally and conceptually significant element of the literary text, which slows down the development of the plot, interrupts it for a while to enter the necessary information about the past of the characters, significant events in their lives and more.

Nowadays the analysis of literary text goes beyond its linear perusal, it requires its structural comprehension, correlation of primary and scientific interpretation. Modern automated information systems suggest wide opportunities for getting original scientific material. The article attempts to analyze the story «Crank» («Chudik») by V.M. Shuckshin in comparison with the writer’s other works by using the NCRL instrument. The notion «National Corpus of the Russian Language» is discovered as well as its purpose. While analyzing the composition, the following levels of analyses were taken into account — the text title and character’s names (their expressions), concepts, details, characteristics of literary world, intertextuality. The results of the given literary studies with NCRL can be later applied at Literature lessons at school and for different types of literary texts analyses

‘Liegfabriek’: text linguistic linking patternsWithin the framework of Text Linguistics it can be argued that linguistic patterns play a role in the structuring and generating of meaning. In the first instance this article investigates the ‘sociolinguistic fibre' in the short story "Liegfabriek'' by Etienne van Heerden. Attention is focused on the characteristics of advertising language and it is indicated how, from a sociolinguistic perspective, advertising language is used to generate different meanings in a literary text. Secondly the linguistic mechanisms employed in establishing structural and semantic unity as well as thematic continuity within the text are investigated. Finally it is argued that an investigation of the linguistic fibre of a literary text sheds light on the complex entity called a literary text.

The role of Ernest Seton-Thompson as a writer who started the genre of animal short-story and his contribution into the national Canadian literature are discussed in the article. Peculiar features of animal-personages from his short-stories which are close to people were singled out. The peculiarities of the literary translation which aim is to reflect ideas, feelings transforming the author’s images with the help of another language material, the main features that make it different from a classical one were stated. Contemporary scholars who scrutinize this aspect in modern translation studies were found out. The notion of adequacy in the process of a literary text translation, the necessity and strive of the translator to reflect the sense, embodied in artistic images, to preserve genre and style and structural-compositional peculiarities of the original text in the context of comparative analysis of the literary text were noted. The differences between the original text of E.Seton-Thompson’s short-story “The Biography of a Grizzly” and its translation by М.Chukovsky were analyzed in the given article. The translation can be called adequate as some change of content and form of the original text by means of the target language did not impact into general perception of the short-story in its translation. The translator conveys the author’s ideas provoking reader‘s reaction to the story. М.Chukovsky  preserved its content, the system of images and the author’s style and plot identity of the original text. Peculiarities of his translation, main structural-grammar and lexical transformations used in the translation were marked. Among the most frequently used transformation techniques actual division of the sentence, grammar changes, change of the sentence parts, concretization, generalization, addition, omission and antonymic translation are noted.

The creative process of meaning construction: A text-linguistic approach The main aim of this article is to explore the usefulness of text linguistics in determining how and why a literary text creates meaning. In order to achieve this aim, the unique way in which a writer or reader creates a text by means of lexico-grammatical and conceptual elements is discussed. The meaningfulness of the linguistic analysis of literary texts is then illustrated by an analysis of T.T. Cloete’s poem “Blydskap”. Lexical cohesion is emphasized and this cohesive device is used as a strategy to indicate how meaningful patterns are created in the text. This analysis illustrates that the methods of text linguistics indeed provide useful tools for examining the construction of meaning in a text.

This research article highlights the temperament, inference, scope, and motives of code-mixing in Pakistani English works. One novel from Pakistani English novels namely, An American Brat by Bapsi Sidhwa, and one short story namely, The Escape by Qaisra Shehraz are being selected as an illustration of this reading. In this novel and short story, the writers have already dealt with the characteristics of postcolonialism. English language and literature pierced into the privileged civilizations of the sub-continent, after the end of British Imperialism. Pakistani writers in English are the best interpreter of the post-colonial communal language. In this study, I have hit upon code-mixing in English works written by Pakistani authors to a bigger echelon. These works are paragons of arts and the unbelievable mixture of rhetorical and fictitious study. In these works, the writers have not abased the confined diversities. They have tinted the value of Pakistani English in order to achieve the chatty desires of native people. These borrowings from the native languages are used to fill the lexical fissures of ideological thoughts. The reason of these borrowings is not to represent the English as a substandard assortment. Through the utilization of native words, we conclude that the significance of native languages has been tinted to question mark the dialect as well. The words of daily use also have an area of research for English people without having any substitute in English. That’s why in English literature innovative practices and ideas of code-mixing have been employed.

This paper is concerned with embodied processes of joint imagination in young children’s narrative interactions. Based on Karl Bühler’s notion of ‘deixis in the imagination’, it examines in detail how a 19-month-old German-speaking child, engaged in picture book reading with his mother, brings about different subtypes of deixis in the imagination by either ‘displacing’ what is absent into the given order of perception (e.g. by using the hand as a token for an object) or displacing his origo to an imagined space (e.g. by kinaesthetically aligning his body with an imagined body and animating his movements). Drawing on multimodal analysis and the concept of layering in interaction, the study analyses the ways in which the picture book as well as deictic, depictive, vocal and lexical resources are coordinated to evoke a narrative space, co-enact the storybook character’s experiences and produce reciprocal affect displays. Findings demonstrate that different types of displacement are in play quite early in childhood; displacements in the dimension of space and person are produced through layerings of spaces, voices and bodies.
