One of the major issues in contemporary text linguistics is the analysis of the cognitive principles of distributing information in a literary text. Literary text unlike other types of the texts holds subtextual and conceptual information which could be encoded by the readers when they identify foregrounded parts of the text. Foregrounding is the type of cognitive principles of distributing information in the text and its main function is guiding the readers in interpretation of hidden and conceptual message of the text by showing some signals (important extracts) to the readers. In this article, the types and techniques of foregrounding are discussed, and their usages are observed in the short story The Luncheon by S. Maugham.

В статье рассматривается взаимообусловленность категорий оценки и оценочности в рамках функционально-семантического анализа художественного текста на материале рассказа Э. Хемингуэя “The Butterfly and the Tank” («Мотылёк и танк»). The article discusses the interconditionality of the assessment and evaluation categories within the framework of functional-semantic analysis of a literary text. The assessment phenomenon is examined in the context of oppositive means of its realization. Particular attention is given to the detection of evaluation potential of various oppositive units on the lexico-syntactical level as well as to the role of evaluation constructions in the author’s message manifestation. The study establishes that the adversative conjunction but, including hypothetical assessment, along with the adversative conjunction and increase evaluation, together with such elements of lexical oppositivity as direct and contextual antonyms, intensifying constructions, expressive means (epithets, metaphors etc.). It is revealed that oppositions with the conjunction and are characterized by a lower frequency of use compared to constructions, marked with the conjunction but. This is explained by the obvious domination of conjunctive semantics over the oppositive one in the semantic tissue of the conjunction. The study also establishes that oppositions with various adversative conjunctions, supplemented with elements of lexical oppositivity, express evaluation in those cases, when the artistic idea requires it. They intensify the artistic expressiveness of a literary work, emphasizing the main meaningful oppositions on the level of symbolicimages. The paper examines the short story “The Butterfly and the Tank” by E. Hemingway.

A linguistic analysis of a literary text: Lexical cohesion in 'My broer se kraai' In this article the positive interaction between language and literature is investigated from a text-linguistic perspective. In text linguistics linguistic investigation is at stake as it attempts to establish the textuality of linguistic structures with the help of as many linguistic means as possible (Carstens, 1997:7). In this article a literary text is used to obtain knowledge of the nature of the language used in the text, while at the same time linguistics is applied to find out more about the literary text – in this case “My broer se kraai” – the short story that is analysed. Furthermore, this article emphasizes the contribution of lexical cohesion in the teaching of literature. Research already undertaken reveals that different types of lexical cohesion are interwoven in a text and form a unit that links with the theme of the given text. The lexical cohesion singled out in the text will not necessarily have the same value and meaning for every reader. What is important, however, is that cohesion has achieved its purpose if the reader is able to experience and understand the text as a coherent unit.

Abstract This paper applies the politics-based theory of Discourse Space to a literary text in order to investigate its flexibility and possible contribution to literary interpretation. As a case study, Gabriel Garcia Marquez’s short story, “A very old man with enormous wings” has been selected; this story most obviously evolves out of dichotomies on both inter- and intra-character levels. The theory’s proximization model is the main core of the analysis based on which the role of the deictic centre in positioning the story’s entities is accentuated. The analysis shows that despite its advantages, the proximization model needs to be expanded in order to accommodate the variety of deictic centres which any literary text, unlike political discourse, has. A comparison between Discourse Space Theory and narratology shows the inadequate attention the latter assigns to the axiological and evaluative role of the deictic centre in the story.

‘Liegfabriek’: text linguistic linking patternsWithin the framework of Text Linguistics it can be argued that linguistic patterns play a role in the structuring and generating of meaning. In the first instance this article investigates the ‘sociolinguistic fibre' in the short story "Liegfabriek'' by Etienne van Heerden. Attention is focused on the characteristics of advertising language and it is indicated how, from a sociolinguistic perspective, advertising language is used to generate different meanings in a literary text. Secondly the linguistic mechanisms employed in establishing structural and semantic unity as well as thematic continuity within the text are investigated. Finally it is argued that an investigation of the linguistic fibre of a literary text sheds light on the complex entity called a literary text.

The article widely describes the concept of author's modality in the context of linguistic research and provides a brief history of the study of the category of modality in modern linguo-stylistics and text linguistics. Author's modality is considered as a category that plays the role of compiler, organizer of the literary text. The author's modality was also studied as a communicative-pragmatic and subjective assessment category. In such works as Kazakh writer A. Kekilbayev's novel "Aṅızdıṅ aqırı" and Kyrgyz writer Sh. Aitmatov's novel "Kıyamat", famous American writers Theodore Dreiser's novel "Jennie Gerhardt", Oscar Wilde's "The Picture of Dorian Gray" the different ways of expression the category of author's modality were studied, and similarities and differences were identified.

The role of Ernest Seton-Thompson as a writer who started the genre of animal short-story and his contribution into the national Canadian literature are discussed in the article. Peculiar features of animal-personages from his short-stories which are close to people were singled out. The peculiarities of the literary translation which aim is to reflect ideas, feelings transforming the author’s images with the help of another language material, the main features that make it different from a classical one were stated. Contemporary scholars who scrutinize this aspect in modern translation studies were found out. The notion of adequacy in the process of a literary text translation, the necessity and strive of the translator to reflect the sense, embodied in artistic images, to preserve genre and style and structural-compositional peculiarities of the original text in the context of comparative analysis of the literary text were noted. The differences between the original text of E.Seton-Thompson’s short-story “The Biography of a Grizzly” and its translation by М.Chukovsky were analyzed in the given article. The translation can be called adequate as some change of content and form of the original text by means of the target language did not impact into general perception of the short-story in its translation. The translator conveys the author’s ideas provoking reader‘s reaction to the story. М.Chukovsky  preserved its content, the system of images and the author’s style and plot identity of the original text. Peculiarities of his translation, main structural-grammar and lexical transformations used in the translation were marked. Among the most frequently used transformation techniques actual division of the sentence, grammar changes, change of the sentence parts, concretization, generalization, addition, omission and antonymic translation are noted.

The research is concerned with the cognitive approach to literary text interpretation which presupposes certain models of understanding. It discusses the problems of multidimensional structure of the literary text, the basic linguistic signals put in the position of foregrounding and the role of cultural concepts in decoding authors world picture. Special attention is paid to the principles of foregrounding, linguistic iconicity, redundancy and economy, which are considered to be cognitive principles of information distribution in a literary text and perform conceptually significant functions, highlighting the most essential information. It is substantiated that in the process of literary text interpretation, attention should be paid to the representation of cultural concepts, the processes of conceptualization and distribution of information in a literary text, the distribution of conceptual features according to the field principle.

Pseudomonas aeruginosa is a widely represented species of bacteria possessing of a pathogenic potential. This infectious agent is causing wound infections, fibrotic cystitis, fibrosing pneumonia, bacterial sepsis, etc. The microorganism is highly resistant to antiseptics, disinfectants, immune system responses of the body. The responses of a quorum sense of this kind of bacteria ensure the inclusion of many pathogenicity factors. The analysis of the scientific literature made it possible to formulate four questions concerning the role of biofilms for the adaptation of P. aeruginosa to adverse environmental factors: Is another person appears to be predominantly of a source an etiological agent or the source of P. aeruginosa infection in the environment? Does the formation of biofilms influence on the antibiotic resistance? How the antagonistic activity of microorganisms is realized in biofilm form? What is the main function of biofilms in the functioning of bacteria? A hypothesis has been put forward the effect of biofilms on the increase of antibiotic resistance of bacteria and, in particular, P. aeruginosa to be secondary in charcter. It is more likely a biofilmboth to fulfill the function of storing nutrients and provide topical competition in the face of food scarcity. In connection with the incompatibility of the molecular radii of most antibiotics and pores in biofilm, biofilm is doubtful to be capable of performing a barrier function for protecting against antibiotics. However, with respect to antibodies and immunocompetent cells, the barrier function is beyond doubt. The biofilm is more likely to fulfill the function of storing nutrients and providing topical competition in conditions of scarcity of food resources.
