Psalm 137 has become notorious for the brutality and bloodthirstiness that characterise its last verses. In the face of many past criticisms which rejected the Old Testament as a book of violence, both Christians  and  Jews need to take texts such as Psalm 137 seriously and interpret them against the  social  and cultural customs of their time. Before Psalm 137 can be judged against the ethical norms of modern societies, the text must first be understood in its ancient context. The aim of this paper is to show that a better understanding of the socio-cultural background of the Psalm may enhance our understanding of vv. 7-9, as well as of the Psalm as a whole. The hypothesis is that the social values of honour and shame feature so prominently in the Psalm that they form a key to the interpretation of the poem.

This article aims to examine the relation between conversational silence and face and to identify communicative behaviour related to silence in Spanish and German. To this end, I will first briefly explain the concepts of conversation, culture and silence, as well as the concept of face. Second, I will analyse verbal and non-verbal activities of silence in transactional and colloquial conversations in Spanish and German conversation. Perceptions and conceptions of conversational silence rely on the situational context and, especially, on the face of each speech community. Therefore, depending on the social context and the characteristics of face in each culture, silence is considered as forming part of conversation.

This study is an extension research of previous research finding conducted by researcher and team, which resulted in more than 50 names of mosques and musalas in Padang were considered error. These forms of error exist in terms of morphological, semantic, morphology and semantic contexts and imla’ rules. However, to explain these errors more comprehensively, a sociopragmatic viewpoint is required. In this context, it can be assumed that in understanding a word or language, the sociological context of the speaker and its use in determining and choosing certain symbols in their language are necessary to be considered. The phenomenon of naming a house of worship such as a mosque and musala cannot be separated from social context of the owners of the place of worship. This frequently causes pragmalinguistic failure in understanding the phenomenon of language which only relies on how to express language structurally, following the rules exclusively without giving attention to the social and cultural context of the speaker itself. This research is a field research which applies qualitative methods. The main data is obtained through interviews with mosques and musalas administrator and also the surrounding community to find out the historical and socio-cultural background of naming the mosques or musalas. The data of this study are all the names of mosques and musalas in Padang, especially those 50 names that are considered error from the perspective of Arabic grammar.

The results of the research have confirmed four out of five hypotheses. The complex social crisis that has lasted for more than two decades has caused inefficiency of all types of social norms, serious value reconstruction and social disorganization. The situation in the society and successive alternations of various populist phenomena can be misleading in the sense of the ability of citizens, especially young people, to comprehend and respect the primary values. Namely, the young generation in this region has grown up with the crisis. This kind of social reality is the only reality they know. Therefore, they clearly identify the ways that lead to the most certain achievement of a goal. Whether they accept these ways or not, they are aware of them and they observe them in the social context. From a personal point of view they still know how to select the values on which every orderly society is founded. The social practice warns of collision between the personal and social. Awareness of the fundamental social values does not mean that they are respected, and that the attitudes, representations, opinions, needs, interests and goals are created in accordance with them.

The marginal Old French translation in a codex kept on Mount Athos, Iviron ? 463, is a remarkably precise translation of the Greek main text, the abridged version of the romance- hagiography Barlaam and Josaphat. Now and then, however, minor spelling mistakes and mistranslations are part of the text, nevertheless, with more careful analysis, these do not appear to be mistakes at all. In this study, examples for such instances are discussed: the author of the paper lists transcriptions/readings which are different from the Greek original and seem to be mistakes at first glance, but the translator?s deliberate intent can be assumed in the mentioned cases, and therefore, they can provide valuable data about the social and cultural background of the unknown translator of the Iviron-manuscript and about the historical and social context of the translation.

Abstract: Throughout the centuries, Christianity has been challenged to keep alive the enthusiasm and the happiness surrounding the announcement of the Good Tidings of Jesus Christ. These challenges always appear side by side with the human changes that occur in a given social context. In the search for meanings and values that make up human existence in society and lead to the construction of culture, the perennial principles of the Gospel must also learn how to maintain a dialogue with the process of the social cultural transformation of human reality. Thus the objective of this article is to discuss, under the perspective of Catholic Christianity, the pastoral practice in the face of the modern city – a city that today questions the Church’s role as Jesus Christ’s missionary.

The enactment of Regional Regulation of Medan City Number 13 of 2011 and Regional Regulation Number 2 of 2016 have not accommodated the importance of Cultural values in the process of formation on spatial and region planning so that the RTRW development carried out by the Medan City government is only based on regulation alone without looking further into the social context and culture. According to Von Savigny's Theory, the formation of law must be based on people's souls (Volkgeist) as the raw material for the formation of law. Therefore, in the formation of regional regulations must pay attention to the cultural values of the indigenous people of an area. The inclusion of Malay cultural values in regional regulations in Medan City is a form of the realization of the state implementing Article 18B paragraph (2) of the 1945 Constitution. Integration of the cultural values of the Malay people in Medan City into regional regulations is carried out through the implementation of the legislative functions of the Medan City Government and DPRD to accommodate and protect the soul of the nation from the original tribe of Medan City whose existence has been marginalized. Revitalizing the cultural value of the Deli Malay in Medan City into spatial and region regulation is a form of protection of the Medan city government towards the cultural, historical and social values of the Malay people in the Medan City.

This article deals with the issues of creativity of people with disabilities and their social values. The starting point is the category of Another as saturated with pejorative meanings – in a social but positive context in the study of creativity. The combination of these contradictory approaches is reflected in the art brut, represented by artists with mental incompetence. Their creativity dictated by internal compulsion is presented as the work of marginalized people. The social context, as well as the type of disability that determines the way in which this art is treated: from the rejection of, for example, the early time of Nikifor's works, to the complete recognition of, for example, F. Kahlo's painting. The basic question, however, comes down to the question of the value of this art for man. Referring to the philosophy of E. Levinas, the author seeks to show that despite the assumption of the unknowability of another human being, the greatest value of the Other art is the ability to experience, to see though a fragment of the world of artists determined by the disability.
