Ecological study with special attention to vegetation analysis has been done in the Bintan forest area, Riau Archipelago. Based on three sampling plots of 30 × 30 m, there were 73 tree (dbh ≥ 5 cm) species were recorded, belong to 64 genera and 32 families. The density is fairly high (1,485 individuals /ha) with total basal area relatively low (27.71 m2/ha). Its indicates that most of trees are small size. Similarity index among study sites are relatively low (< 25 %), indicates that there is strong relation between habitat and species composition. Out of the 6 most common tree species in the study area, only Dipterocarpus gracillis was dominant in 2 study sites. Overall species diversity is relatively low, which is characteristic of forest vegetation on small islands.

This study analyzes the gap between expected and perceived services by ship passengers at the Sri Bayintan Port, Kijang, Riau Archipelago. The purpose of the paper is to examine the gap between expected and perceived service delivery by ship passengers in the Sri Bayintan Port. To test the service gap, ServQual variables as postulated in Parasuraman, Zeithaml & Berry (1988) were used. The variables include tangibility, reliability, responsiveness, assurance, and empathy. Data were collected using a sample of 98 passengers, who were chosen at random. Research results showed that there is a significant difference between expected and perceived service delivery among passengers who use Sri Bayintan port. In particular, findings of this study showed that passengers were not satisfied with the quality of service delivery they received in Sri Bayintan Port.

University students working and studying at the same time for various reasons. The aim of the study is to review the impact of students’ dual role as students and workers on the depression rate of working university students in Batam, Indonesia. A comprehensive review of the literature revealed that working while studying does not necessarily affect students’ academic performance. However, depression is the most common health problem in university students. However, working students tend to have higher depression rate than non-working students. Depression in students may be the cause of the high dropout rate in Batam. It is important to administer depression-prevention intervention as early as possible, since the first- and second-year students are the most likely to get depressed

Beragam alasan melatarbelakangi mahasiswa bekerja selama berkuliah.

Obat Pahit is a potion that has been long commonly consumed by Lingga Malay society for generations as stamina keeper. The most dominant plants found in the packaging of the Obat Pahit were namely Bauhunia semibifida, Cnestis palala and Penawa Root (3 species). This research aimed to investigate and determine activity of antioxidant contents in Obat Pahit from five Traditional Medicine Practitioners (TMPs) in the district of Lingga. The tested samples were mashed then being soaked into 2 types of solvent: distilled water and methanol, containing HCl 1%. DPPH method was also used in this research. Quantitatively antioxidant activity test of Obat Pahit from the five TMPs by using methanol solvent had extremely highest activity compared to the distilled water solvent. The test, using TLC plate by spraying the extract from three dominant plants with 0.1 mM of DPPH solution, produced a pale-yellow spots at a wavelength of 366 nm. On the other hand, the test using HPLC at wavelengths of 230 nm and 280 nm showed the presence of two dominant secondary metabolites contents: flavonoid and phenolic. IC50 (ppm) of Bauhinia semibifida (6.6247), Penawa Root (5.0124) and Cnestis palala (5.9968) were much lower than IC50 of mangosteen’s rind (41.7675), vitamin C (6.6612) and Stimuno drug (8.333). This antioxidant analysis has not been reported previously. This proof contributed greatly to uncovering potentially native natural resources as an indigenous Indonesian drug which is expected to decrease dependence on imported drugs especially imunomodulator, antihypertensive, antidiabet etc. This research would be beneficial and excellent manifestation for the development of natural antioxidant-based medicines from traditional knowledge of Indonesia’s local ethnicities.

Indonesia is a country rich in resources, especially natural resources, but population growth is not proportional to the availability of natural resources. Malthus predicts that population progress to increase in quantity is greater than the ability of natural resources to provide human food needs. The environment cannot support an infinite amount of life if the earth is no longer able to support the explosion in the number of humans and their activities. Indonesia is a country known as a maritime country, which means it is mostly water and consists of islands. Sea transportation is very important to connect the islands scattered throughout Indonesia. The development of environmental law is urgently needed which cannot be separated from the world movement to give greater attention to the environment. In marine pursuits, such as fishing, excessive fish species using trawlers can lead to extinction. Pollution of the marine environment is a threat to human life, animals, and plants. Increased use of the sea can have a direct impact on the marine environment and the biota in it. The Environment Agency is one of the institutions that play a role in handling the impact of marine environmental pollution in the region. The purpose of this research is to find out the Legal Regulation of Marine Pollution by Tanker Ships in the Riau Archipelago Waters. The aim is to find out what factors are being carried out in handling marine pollution by tankers in the waters, especially in the Riau Islands Environmental Service. It is hoped that this will lead to a better understanding of the environmental impact of marine pollution in the region. The Riau Islands Environment Agency is responsible for compensation for losses caused by pollution of the marine environment by persons or legal entities within its jurisdiction. Each country must cooperate in implementing international law which regulates the responsibility and obligation to compensate for losses due to pollution. The International Maritime Organization is a leading organization in producing various regulations on marine pollution, especially those caused by oil. Keywords: Marine Pollution, Tanker Ships, Riau Islands.

The objectives of this study are to: (1) acknowledge the students’ English competence based onthe taken majors and study programs, (2) determine the general English competence (TOEFLEquivalent). The target group of the study is all students who took English language at variousfaculties and at the same time also enrolled at TOEFL Equivalent at UPT Bahasa Universitas Riau(Language Center). The number of the population is 9.765 the students. Due to the homogenouscharacters of the population, 20% out of the population (1.953 students) were taken as sample ofthe research. TOEFL Equivalent compiled by the Language Center of Universitas Riau was usedto collect the needed data. Descriptive statistics was operated to compute the data in order to getmean of the TOEFL Equivalent scores. Inferential statistics (Annova) was applied to differentiatethe scores of TOEFL Equivalent obtained by various backgrounds of the students (gender, programtaken at Universitas Riau, majors at senior high schools, region of their senior high schools, schoolstatus and ethnic groups). After analysing the data, it was found that female students’ mean scoreis higher (405) than the male’s (402); the mean TOEFL score of the study program taken atUniversitas Riau in which the English Students is the highest (432) among a lot of study programs;the mean score of the students of Riau Province is higher (420) than the Riau Archipelago Province(401); the mean score of students of private schools is higher (405) than the state schools (404);the mean of TOEFL score of Language and Art is the highest (432) among three majors (naturalscience, social science and other science). The last is the Chinese / Tionghoa mean of TOEFLscore is the highest (438) among existing ethnic groups. The findings suggest that the students ofUniversitas Riau should be aware of understanding parts of the TOEFL materials like listening, reading, and structure especially in the area of their difficulties.
