The accentuated increase in the production of solid urban waste (SUW) and the consequent accumulation of leachate in landfills increase the risk of environmental contamination. Biomonitors are used to assess the toxicity of pollutants on living organisms. In this study, the pollutant potential of leachate from SUW from a deactivated landfill was evaluated by bioassays with Lactuca sativa L. and Lycopersicon esculentum Mill., and the relationship between chemical characteristics of the effluent and biological parameters was analyzed. The effluent was tested in its raw form and diluted in distilled water at concentrations of 75 and 50%. The percentage of germination, root growth (RG), mitotic index (MI), chromosomal abnormalities index (CAI), and micronuclei frequency (MCN) were analyzed. In the presence of effluent, germination and MI decreased, while RG, CAI and MCN frequencies increased in relation to the negative control (distilled water) for both species. Lead, iron and zinc presented negative relation with seed germination for both species, with RG of L. sativa and MI of L. esculentum, as well as a positive relation with MCN frequency in the studied species. Because of its larger chromosomes, L. sativa is a more suitable biomonitor of SUW leachate toxicity than L. esculentum. Even though the landfill is deactivated, it is necessary to treat this effluent, in order to minimize environmental impacts.

Salinity can affect cell division and cause chromosomal abnormalities such as the formation of micronuclei, chromosome stickiness, c-mitosis and multipolar anaphases. Plants react to salt stress with morphological, biochemical, physiological, cellular and molecular adjustments. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of different leaf extract concentrations of purple lettuce on the cytogenetic activity of lettuce roots, cv. Regina, from seeds subjected to salt stress. Four extract concentrations of purple lettuce (0, 50, 100 and 150 g lettuce leaves L-1 water)and five concentrations of sodium chloride (0, 30, 60, 90 and 120 mM) were tested, constituting 20 treatments, with distilled water for a negative control. The analyses were of mitotic index (MI), phase index of mitosis (prophase, metaphase, anaphase and telophase) and the presence of chromosomal aberrations. Salt reduces the mitotic index and all index phases of the lettuce roots. The purple lettuce extract does not affect the mitotic index, reduces the cell index in prophase and increases the cells in telophase of lettuce roots. The purple lettuce extract and salt cause chromosomal abnormalities in lettuce root cells; however, a smaller number of mutations is found by applying 100 g L-1 extract.

Living organisms take nutrients from the environment, and together with them, substances with toxic potential � such as heavy metals. Lead is one common metal pollutant especially in aquatic environment, from where the fish can be intoxicated very easily. Bioavailability, distribution, toxic action, synergistic and antagonistic effects are characteristics which can alter the fish health. Our experimental study followed the effects of lead overload in water on iron distribution, in different tissues sample Carassius gibelio Bloch fish. We performed the experiment in four different fish groups: control C; lead � Pb (administration of lead in water 0.075mg/mL of water, as Pb(NO3)2 x � H2O); lead (the same dose) and 2% of freeze-dry garlic incorporated into fishes� food � Pb+garlic; lead (the same dose) and 2% chlorella incorporated into fishes� food � Pb+chlorella, for 21 consecutive days. The iron concentration was analysed with AAS (Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy) from gills, muscle, skin (and scales), intestine, liver, heart, brain, ovary, testicles, and kidney. The obtained data presented a significantly decrease of iron content in all tested tissue samples that demonstrated, alteration of iron homeostasis, explained by a strong antagonistic effect of lead on iron. Our experiment showed that biologic active principles from garlic and chlorella act like natural protectors, and potentiate the iron deficiency even in the case of lead overload in aquatic environment, for fish.

Phosphorus is an essential and non-substitutable element for the cellular processes of all living organisms. The main source of phosphorus in the biosphere is phosphate rock. With more than 700 Mt phosphate rock, Estonia holds the largest sedimentary phosphate rock deposits in the European Union. Estonian phosphate rock is particularly outstanding due to its remarkably low content of hazardous heavy metals such as Cadmium (<5 ppm) and trace elements of Uranium (<50 ppm). It is also a reliable source of valuable elements such as rear earth elements (REEs). The aim of this study was to investigate the distribution of the main minerals (apatite and quartz) between slimes, tailings, and concentrates that formed at the froth flotation of Estonian phosphate rock with the up-to-date level of know-how and techniques. Subsequently, the relationship between the obtained grades and recovery levels in concentrates was determined based on the collector dosage and flotation duration. It was observed that the fine fraction of the tailings contains 17.9–33.49 wt% P2O5 that can be added to the final product. Moreover, it was found that, with the lower dosage of the collector, the extended flotation time does not influence the phosphate grade and a high amount of quartz remains in the concentrates. It was also shown that, by raising the collector dosage and setting the flotation time, an adequate grade (>32 wt% P2O5) and recovery (up to 98%) can be gained. The results showed that Estonian phosphate rock can be beneficiated to produce a high-quality concentrate at high recovery levels by modifying the main flotation parameters depending on the properties of the ore.

In September 2011, bacterial leaf spot was observed on zinnia plants (Zinnia elegans L.) grown in a garden in Suwon, Korea. Leaf symptoms included angular lesions that were yellow or brown-to-reddish brown in the center. Bacterial isolates (BC3293 to BC3299) were recovered on trypticase soy agar from lesions surface-sterilized in 70% ethyl alcohol for 1 min. Pathogenicity of the isolates was confirmed by spray inoculation with a bacterial suspension (106 CFU/ml) prepared in sterile distilled water and applied to zinnia plants at the four- to five-leaf growth stage (two plants per isolate). Sterile distilled water was used as the negative control. The inoculated plants were incubated in a greenhouse at 26 to 30°C and 95% relative humidity. Characteristic leaf spot symptoms developed on inoculated zinnia plants 5 days after inoculation. No symptoms were observed on the negative control plants. The bacterium reisolated from the inoculated leaves was confirmed through gyrB gene sequence analysis (3). All isolates were gram-negative, aerobic rods, each with a single flagellum. Isolates were positive for catalase and negative for oxidase. The biochemical and physiological tests for differentiation of Xanthomonas were performed using methods described by Shaad et al. (2). The isolates were positive for mucoid growth on yeast extract-dextrose-calcium carbonate agar, growth at 35°C, hydrolysis of starch and esculin, protein digestion, acid production from arabitol, and utilization of glycerol and melibiose. Colonies were negative for ice nucleation, and alkaline in litmus milk. The gyrB gene (870 bp) and the 16S-23S rRNA internal transcribed spacer (ITS) regions (884 bp) were sequenced to aid in identification of the original field isolates using published PCR primer sets Xgyr1BF/Xgyr1BR (3) and A1/B1 (1), respectively. Sequence of the gyrB gene (GenBank Accession Nos. JQ665732 to JQ665738) from the zinnia field isolates shared 100% sequence identity with the reference strain of Xanthomonas campestris pv. zinniae (GenBank Accession No. EU285210), and the ITS sequences (GenBank Accession Nos. JQ665725 to JQ665731) had 99.9% sequence identity with X. campestris pv. zinnia XCZ-1 (GenBank Accession No. EF514223). On the basis of the pathogenicity assays, biochemical and physiological tests, and sequence analyses, the isolates were identified as X. campestris pv. zinniae. To our knowledge, this is the first report of bacterial leaf spot of zinnia caused by X. campestris pv. zinniae in Korea. The disease is expected to result in economic and aesthetic losses to plants in Korean landscapes. Abstract Background Neuroblastoma (NB) is the most common extracranial solid tumor in children with high heterogeneity and concealed onset. The mechanism for its occurrence and development has not been revealed. The purpose of this study was to summarize the clinical characteristics of children with NB and abnormal chromosome 10. To investigate the relationship between the number and structure of chromosome 10 abnormality and NB prognosis.MethodsWe used chromosome G-banding in the first diagnosis to evaluate the genetics of chromosomes in patients with NB, and follow up their clinical characteristics and prognosis. All participants were diagnosed with NB in Hematology Oncology Center, Beijing Children’s Hospital from May 2015 to December 2018, and were followed up for at least one year. ResultsOf all 150 patients with bone marrow metastases, 42 were clearly diagnosed with chromosomal abnormalities. There were 13 patients with chromosome 10 abnormalities definitely, and the loss of chromosome 10 was the most common decrease in the number of chromosomes. These 13 patient had higher LDH, lower OS and EFS than that of children in abnormal group without chromosome 10 abnormality. Eight patients both had MYCN amplification and 1p36 deletion. Two of them had optic nerve damage and no vision, and 1 had left supraorbital metastases five months after treatment. Among the 16 children with suspected chromosome 10 abnormalities, 3 also had orbital metastases. ConclusionsThe above results showed that chromosome 10 might be a new prognostic marker. MYCN amplification and 1p36 deletion may be related with chromosome 10 abnormalities in NB. And NB patients with abnormal chromosome 10 were prone to have orbital metastases.

Any drug, regardless of how benign and well tolerated, is potentially toxic. The toxicity may be due to (1) dosage; (2) the size of the patient; (3) drug interaction; (4) drug specificity for the disease; (5) the nature of the disease for which the drug is used; and (6) the mode and frequency of medication. DOSE OF ANTICONVULSANT Dose of anficonvulsant is very important (Table I). Any anticonvulsant in higher than therapeutic doses has toxic potential. It is well known that anticonvulsants in large enough doses can act as convulsants. This is especially true for diphenylhydantoin, benzodiazepines, and lidocaine. THE SIZE OF THE PATIENT The size of the patient should be considered in dosage. It is safer and more accurate to adjust dosage to body surface than to weight (Table I). As the child grows, there may be a need to gradually increase the dose of anticonvulsants if seizure control is poor, or if the serum level of the anticonvulsant starts to decline. DRUG INTERACTION The relationship. of multiple drug therapy and its toxic effects on the brain is quite complicated, and many forms of toxicity can result. Toxicity may be the result of a combination of pharmacologically similar drugs. Such a combination may enhance the side effects of drowsiness and ataxia. The patient may suffer from these side effects without attaining therapeutic levels of individual anticonvulsants in the blood. In other words, a combination of drugs such as phenobarbital and primidone may result in severe ataxia and drowsiness.

Purpose: To assess the antimicrobial effects of different natural and semi-natural mouthrinses on isolates of S. mutans obtained from the saliva of Saudi children and reference strains of S mutans (ATCC 25175). Study design: Saliva samples were collected from 20 children. Natural and semi-natural mouthrinses included were herbal mix mouthrinse, cranberry mouthrinse, chlorhexidine digluconate mouthrinse, cranberry extract mixed with chlorhexidine digluconate mouthrinse, chlorhexidine digluconate mouthrinse with alcohol (positive control), and distilled water (negative control). The microbiological examination tests were minimal inhibitory concentration, minimal bactericidal concentration, and zone of inhibition for the saliva isolates of S. mutans while zone of inhibition test only for reference strain of S. mutans. Results: For reference strain in a comparison with the distilled water, the herbal mix, cranberry, cranberry mixed with chlorhexidine, chlorhexidine, and chlorhexidine with alcohol showed significantly increased zones of inhibition by 36.38, 36.25, 26.13, 17.75, and 12.38, respectively. For saliva isolates in a comparison with the distilled water, the herbal mix, cranberry, cranberry mixed with chlorhexidine, chlorhexidine, and chlorhexidine with alcohol showed significantly increased zones of inhibition by 38.00, 34.25, 22.94, 16.50, and 16.44, respectively. Chlorhexidine with alcohol showed significantly lower minimum inhibitory and bactericidal concentration than the other groups. Conclusions: Herbal mix and cranberry mouthrinses could be effective natural alternative to chlorhexidine mouthrinse with or without alcohol in affecting tested parameters.

ObjectivesPeriodicity, cyclicity, and annual rhythms are inherent characteristics of living organisms, and have also been reported for diverse physiological and pathological conditions and phenomena. Season of birth was also associated with central monoamine and monoamine metabolite levels in several studies. Furthermore, several studies indicate a significant effect of season of birth on personality traits and characteristics. A relationship between birth season and novelty seeking has been described and confirmed in several studies. However, affective temperaments have not so far been studied with respect to their association with birth season.AimsThe aim of our present study was to investigate the possible association between affective temperaments and season of birth in a nonclinical sample.Methods366 university students completed the standardized Hungarian version of the TEMPS-A. Ordinary Least Squares regression was applied to explain the relationship between TEMPS-A subscales and birth season of the respondents.ResultsWe found a significant association between temperament scores and birth season in case of the Hyperthymic, Cyclothymic, Irritable and Depressive temperaments, while no significant results emerged for the Anxious temperament.ConclusionsOur results provide further evidence for an association between season of birth and personality, extending the results to affective temperaments as well. Furthermore, our results can be related to clinical observations concerning the seasonal variation of onset and hospitalization due to affective episodes, thus our results also have clinical significance.

Genome stability is an integral feature of all living organisms. Aneuploidy is the most common cause of fetal death in humans. The timing of bursts in increased aneuploidy frequency coincides with the waves of global epigenetic reprogramming in mammals. During gametogenesis and early embryogenesis, parental genomes undergo two waves of DNA methylation reprogramming. Failure of these processes can critically affect genome stability, including chromosome segregation during cell division. Abnormal methylation due to errors in the reprogramming process can potentially lead to aneuploidy. On the other hand, the presence of an entire additional chromosome, or chromosome loss, can affect the global genome methylation level. The associations of these two phenomena are well studied in the context of carcinogenesis, but here, we consider the relationship of DNA methylation and aneuploidy in early human and mammalian ontogenesis. In this review, we link these two phenomena and highlight the critical ontogenesis periods and genome regions that play a significant role in human reproduction and in the formation of pathological phenotypes in newborns with chromosomal aneuploidy.
