A STUDY OF OAT VARIETIES FOR USE AS ENSILAGE

Tall late-maturing varieties produced the highest dry matter yields of 25 oat varieties cut in the medium-dough stage at Lacombe, Alberta, from 1959 to 1961. High tillering was associated with small stems and high fiber content but was not indicative of high yield. With the exception of fiber, chemical constituents were not associated with agronomic characteristics. Nitrate (KNO3) content increased under drought conditions, being twice as high in 1960 as in 1959. Since late-maturing varieties were suitable for both seed and forage production it was concluded that breeding for forage was unwarranted.

Background. There are strict requirements for a modern flax cultivar. It must have a whole set of valuable characters, including rust resistance.Materials and methods. The flax collection of 2485 accessions held by VIR was evaluated using artificial provocative infection.Results. Almost all domestic and foreign accessions and varieties collected before 1957 were highly or extremely susceptible to rust. Five Russian kryazhs1 and cv. ‘GDS-3’ developed at VIR were found to retain rust resistance up to the present moment. Lines derived from them and from three foreign varieties, with an identified number of the original effective R genes, were submitted to breeders. Nineteen donors with a set of economically useful traits, analogous to cvs. ‘Orshansky 2’ and ‘Prizyv 81’ and carrying the same genes, were produced and distributed to breeders. The VIR collection holds 10 donors of rust resistance with high fiber content developed at the All-Russian Research Institute of Flax. Some donors of resistance to other diseases released by the same Institute also possess high rust resistance, thus forming a rich stock of source material. The first cultivar relatively resistant to rust (‘L-1120’) was released in 1951. Possessing polygenic resistance, it was also resistant to Fusarium wilt and lodging, so it was widely used for breeding other cultivars with similar characteristics. As their cultivation expanded, the harvest losses caused by rust dropped. The first rust-resistant cultivar with oligogenic resistance (‘Tomsky 16’) appeared in 1990. By now, many cultivars protected by R genes of rust resistance have been developed. They combine this trait with resistance to Fusarium and lodging, high yield, and high fiber content. Flax rust incidence is not a problem anymore.Conclusion. Plant breeders have at their disposal a rich stock of source material preserved in the VIR collection to produce resistant flax cultivars. The use of rust resistance donors in hybridization cannot disrupt the most important properties of a cultivar.

SUMMARYForage sorghum (FS) (Sorghum bicolor(L.) Moench) is a key feed source for ruminants owing to its high yield and drought tolerance. The present paper assessed the agronomic characteristics, silage quality, intake and digestibility of five new Brazilian sorghum cultivars (BRS Ponta Negra variety, BRS 655 hybrid, BR 601 hybrid, BRS 506 variety and BRS 610 hybrid). Forages were grown (randomized complete block design) in a typical Brazilian north-eastern semi-arid climate, irrigated with 267 mm water, harvested as plants reached the soft dough stage of grain maturity and ensiled under laboratory and farm conditions. Apparent digestibility of the silages was determined using 25 Santa Inês lambs. BRS 506 outperformed the other cultivars in dry matter (DM) and digestible DM yields/ha. BRS 506 exhibited the lowest neutral detergent fibre (NDF) and acid detergent fibre (ADF) contents and the highestin vitrodry matter digestibility (IVDMD) of the cultivars examined. BRS 655 produced the lowest level of lactic acid and the highest pH and ammonia-N concentration. There was no difference in intake or digestibility of DM among cultivars. Silages produced from BRS Ponta Negra resulted in higher crude protein (CP) intake than BRS 655. Silages made from BRS 506 and BRS Ponta Negra resulted in a greater digestibility of CP than those produced from BRS 655. Intake of NDF in silages generated from BRS Ponta Negra and BRS 610 was higher than that found in other cultivars. Although an average Brazilian North-eastern FS exhibited similar characteristics to other cultivars grown in dry regions around the world, the results indicated that BRS 506 had a yield advantage and higher nutritive value under Brazilian semi-arid conditions as compared to the other cultivars examined.

Fifteen introduced and native warm-season perennial grasses were evaluated for yield, yield distribution, and quality in south-central Oklahoma. These grasses have production potential for forage and/or biofuel. Each was harvested one to four times per year. “Alamo” switchgrass (Panicum virgatum) had a two-year average dry matter yield of 17690 kg . Over 1/3 of this production occurred in May with a crude protein (CP) range of 97–115 g . Alamo’s high yield potential and early spring growth make it attractive for spring forage production and fall biomass production. Other grasses with two-year average dry matter yields over 11200 kg  and 1/3 of yearly production occurring early in the growing season that have potential dual purpose use include “Selection 75” kleingrass (Panicum coloratum), “Midland 99” bermudagrass (Cynodon dactylon), johnsongrass (Sorghum halepense), “Carostan” flaccidgrass (Pennisetum flaccidum), and “Ermelo” weeping lovegrass (Eragrostis curvula).

The objective of this study was to evaluate the agronomic traits of 80 accessions of elephant grass under the soil and weather conditions of Campos dos Goytacazes/RJ, Brazil. The experimental design was set as randomized blocks with 2 replicates. The experiment continued from March 2012 to May 2013, with 5 harvests made in the dry and rainy seasons. The following traits were assessed: percentage of dry matter (%DM), dry matter yield (DMY), number of tillers per meter (NT), plant height (HGT), stem diameter (SD), leaf blade width (LBW) and leaf blade length (LBL). Data from each harvest were subjected to analysis of variance and to the Scott-Knott test (P < 0.05). Tocher’s optimization method, Mahalanobis distance, and canonical variables were utilized for the multiple traits, and the importance of the characters in the canonical variables. Genotypes with high yield were Elefante da Colômbia, Taiwan A-25, Albano, Hib. Gigante da Colômbia, Elefante de Pinda, Taiwan A-121, P241 Piracicaba, Guaçu/I.Z.2, CPAC, EMPASC 309, EMPASC 307, Australiano, and Pasto Panamá. Stem diameter (rainy season) and LBW (dry season) were the most important variables to differentiate between genotypes. There was wide phenotypic variation between genotypes, which could be divided into 15 groups by Tocher’s optimization method.

Biscuits, which are loved by many consumers, often provide a high level of energy because they are rich in sugar, flour, fat and low in fiber. Fiber plays an important role in preventing constipation, cardiovascular diseases and obesity, so the current trend of manufacturers is to create high-fiber biscuit lines. Defatted copra meal (DCM) is a rich source of fiber and is added to biscuits to increase the fiber content of the cake. In this study, defatted copra meal, after being hydrolysed with the enzyme Cellulast1.5L (HDCM), will be used to replace wheat flour with different ratios, from 10% to 40%, in fiber rich biscuit recipe. The hydrolysis of DCM was carried out with an enzyme concentration of 5U/g dry matter, for 30 minutes. The obtained HDCM has a soluble fiber (SDF) content of 7.3% dry matter, an increase of 2.43 times compared to the DCM sample. At the same time, the ratio between insoluble fiber and soluble fiber (IDF/SDF) of HDCM also decreased by 2.64 times compared to this ratio of DCM. The chemical composition, hardness, physical and sensory parameters of biscuits were used to evaluate the effect of hydrolyzed copra meal replacement rate. When increasing the percentage of HDCM from 20-40%, the total fiber content of biscuits increased 1.7- 5.9 times compared with the control sample. The HDCM substitution rates of 20% and 30%, for biscuits with acceptable taste scores of 5.7 and 5.0, respectively, with total fiber content of 9.0 and 15.5%, respectively, are suitable for manufactures fiber-rich biscuits.

Aim. With the organization of Research Station first, then Institute of Hemp it was predicted to increase productivity and improve service of hemp-growing branch. Methods. Through traditional breeding different ecotypes of hemp were formed with which was started scientific breeding by methods of selection and hybridization. Results. For 40 years of selection the fiber content in stems of dioecious hemp was increased from 13.9 to 33.5 %. By the method of acclimati-zation the variety US-1, and hybridization – US-6 were created, which united a high yield of stems with high fiber content. Breeders also realized the dream of farmers about creation of monoecious hemp, which opened the way to the mechanization of harvesting. Addicts are "awakened" in nature lulling hemp ability to narcotic excitement; the breeders have forced a non-narcotic hemp, while maintaining their economic characteristics and resistance to damage by pests and diseases. Conclusions. Modern hemp varieties are able to form a crop straw, fiber and seeds within 6.0–11.5; 1.7–2.5 and 0.6–1.2 t/ha, respectively, for the minimum content or complete absence of the main component of cannabinoids – THC. The growth and forage production of Manihot glaziovii were evaluated in plants growing in Itapetim-PE, Brazil via a complete block experimental design with four treatments (0, 33, 50, and 100% branch cutting intensity) to analyze increases in height and diameter. Furthermore, 3×2 factorial treatments (three branch cutting intensities: 33, 50, and 100% as well as two types of collected forage material: Branches with diameter < 10 mm and corresponding sprouts on the same branches 1 year after being cut) were analyzed for improvement in forage quantity and quality parameters. Height increase was affected (P < 0.05) by branch cutting intensity (0.29, 0.11, 0.43, and -0.04 m plant-1, respectively, for 0, 33, 50, and 100% branch cutting intensities), while the increase in diameter was not affected (P > 0.05) (3.97 mm plant-1 was the overall mean increase). Cutting intensity×type of collected material, in combination, affected (P < 0.05) the quantity of the collected forage: means were considered similar (P > 0.05) in the first (branches) and second (sprouts) forage collection events for 33% (0.66 and 0.75 kg dry matter plant-1, respectively) and 50% (1.40 and 1.73 kg dry matter plant-1, respectively) cutting intensities; it decreased (P < 0.05) from the first to the second collection events, when 100% of branches and sprouts were harvested (3.37 and 2.06 kg dry matter plant-1, respectively). The combined effects of aforementioned parameters were observed (P < 0.05) as interactions for some forage quality variables. Neutral detergent fiber content remained constant (P > 0.05) between 50.57 and 54.41% in forage containing branch and sprouts from 33 and 50% cutting intensities. It increased (P < 0.05) to 62.20% in sprouts from 100% cutting intensity. Acid detergent fiber content increased (P < 0.05) from around 38.4% to 46.63% in sprouts from plants subjected to 100% cutting intensity. The crude protein (between 8.72 and 10.08%) and ether extract (between 2.74 and 4.35%) contents were unaffected (P > 0.05) by these factors. Mineral matter content was higher (P < 0.05) in sprouts from all cutting intensities with 5.9% being the highest. Up to 50% of Manihot glaziovii branches with Ø < 10 mm and corresponding 1-year-old sprouts can be pruned with no negative effect on the quality and quantity (up to 1.73 kg dry matter plant-1) of the collected forage.

Experiments were conducted at three sites across southern New South Wales, Australia, over three years (2008 to 2010), to evaluate the agronomic and quality parameters of two wheat (Triticum aestivum L.), two barley (Hordeum vulgare L.), two oat (Avena sativa L.) and one triticale (× Triticosecale) variety, grown as monocultures or in combination with purple vetch (Vicia benghalensis L.). Harvests occurred when individual cereal varieties were at the boot, anthesis, milk and soft/mid dough stage of maturity; though drought conditions or lodging forced some soft/mid dough stage harvests to be abandoned. Yield and species composition of mixed crops were measured and digestibility, crude protein, water soluble carbohydrates and fibre content were determined. Yield differed between years reflective of growing season rainfall, which varied from 185 to 479 mm. Drought conditions in 2008 were associated with low yield, vetch inclusion and fibre content and high digestibility, water soluble carbohydrates and cereal crude protein content. Conversely, very favourable conditions in 2010 were associated with high yield and fibre content, and lower digestibility, water soluble carbohydrates and cereal crude protein content. Addition of vetch increased crude protein content all crops in 2009 and 2010, and 50% of the crops in 2008. Lodging was observed in later harvests of cereal/vetch crops in 2009 and 2010.

The objective of this experiment was to obtain forage/ cover crops productivity and carrying capacity for ruminant animals in Pelalawan Regency, Riau in the dry season. Data were collected from civil palm oil plantations at the aged 7, 10 and 14 years in the end of dry season with a destructive sampling method. Sampling used line intercept method which every hectare were picked 10 points by using a pair of 1 m2 sized quadrant. The result showed that the number of vegetations/ cover crops in oil palm plantations aged 7, 10 and 14 years was 42 types.The proportion of forage which consist grass, legume and ferns was diverse at each age of oil palm plantations. Forage production under oil palm plantations aged 7, 10 and 14 years were 2,571 kg/ha, 1479.76 kg/ha and 1417.22 kg/ha as fed and amounted to 811.41 kg/ ha, 471, 15 kg/ ha and 456.91 kg/ ha in the dry matter production. Average carrying capacities of oil palm plantations aged 7, 10 and 14 years was 0.36 Animal units (AU)/ha/year, 0.21 AU/ha/year and 0.20 AU/ ha/year.Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui potensi jumlah covercrop dan kapasitas tampungnya di kebun sawit sebagai sumber pakan hijauan ruminansia pada musim kemarau di kabupaten Pelalawan, Riau. Pengambilan data dilakukan di perkebunan kelapa sawit yang berumur 7, 10 dan 14 tahun milik rakyat pada akhir musim kemarau. Pengambilan sampel dengan destructive sampling method menggunakan metode garis berpetak memakai kuadran berukuran 1m2 dengan jumlah sampel tiap area sebanyak 10 titik. Berdasar hasil pengukuran diperoleh hasil jumlah vegetasi/ covercrop yang ada di kebun sawit berumur 7, 10 dan 14 tahun sebanyak 42 jenis yang bervariasi tiap umur tanaman sawit. Proporsi hijauan yang ada meliputi jenis rumput, legume dan paku-pakuan bervariasi pada tiap umur kebun sawit. Produksi hijauan yang ada di bawah kebun sawit berumur 7, 10 dan 14 tahun berturut-turut 2.571 kg/ha, 1.479,76 kg/ha dan 1.417,22 kg/ha dalam bentuk segar serta sebesar 811,41 kg/ha, 471,15 kg/ha dan 456,91 kg/ha dalam bahan kering. Kapasitas tampung dari kebun sawit berumur 7, 10 dan 14 tahun adalah 0,36 satuan ternak (ST)/ha, 0,21 ST/ha dan 0,20 ST/ha.Keywords: cover crops, oil palm plantation, forage, ruminant, dry season, Pelalawan
