Phytochemical and antimicrobial activity of methanol extract of Albizia ferruginea (Guill and Perr) which belongs to the family of Fabaceae were studied. Phytochemical studies on the plant leaves showed that they contained alkaloids, tannins, flavonoids, steroids, saponins, cardiac glycoside and carbohydrate. Methanol extract of Albizia ferruginea showed growth inhibitory effects of varying degrees on S. feacalis, S. typhi, S. paratyphi, Shigella dysentriae and Klebsiella pneumonia but was not active on Streptococcus pyogenes and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of the extract was determined for the organisms whose growths were inhibited. The extract had MIC of 3.25mg/ml for S. feacalis, S. paratyphi, S. dysentriae and K. pneumoniae respectively. The antimicrobial studies of the extracts really justify the numerous folkloric uses of the plant parts in the treatment of some common ailments such as diarrhea, dysentery, fever, cough, pain and skin infections.

This study examined the macro- and micro-morphological, Anatomical, Cytological and Phytochemical Properties of Tridax procumbens L. in the family Asteraceae. Observations of plant parts aided by measurements were done and these were sectioned following Wahua’s method; root tips squashed with FLP Orcein and qualitative phytochemical analyses were carried out. The slides were viewed using the light compound microscope and photomicrographs were taken after careful examination from good preparations. Macromorphological studies showed the plant grows up to 40cm or more in height. Foliar features revealed opposite, pinnate, oblong to ovate with coarsely serrated margin and acute apex, 4±1.5cm long and 2±1cm wide with petiole up to 1.5±0.5cm in length. The floral structure show cased diameter of each flower head as 1.0±0.4cm while the peduncle is elongated and up to 10±5cm in length; the petal is 0.7±0.2cm in length alongside tubular sepals up to 0.9±0.3cm in length. The stamen is 0.9±0.2cm in length while the carpel is 1.0±0.1cm. Presence of anomocytic stomata which is amphistomatic. Anatomical sections on the mid-ribs, petiole, internodes, nodes and roots revealed peculiar internal features. Mitotic chromosome is 2n=36. Phytochemical studies revealed the presence of saponins, alkaloids, flavonoids, tannins, steroids, cardiac glycosides, phenols. In the present work, we report the one pot synthesis of tetrazole based 3-hydroxy-4H-chromen-4-ones 3(a-g) from  4-(1H-tetrazol-5-yl)benzaldehyde and 2-hydroxy acetophenone using KOH and H2O2 by modified Algar-Flynn-Oyamada reaction under conventional and microwave irradiation conditions. In this technique, flavonols are synthesized without isolating chalcones, in good yields. All the synthesized compounds were characterized by IR, NMR, MS and elemental. All newly synthesized compounds were screened for their in-vitro antimicrobial activity against strains such as Staphylococcus aurous, Bacillus subtilis, Klebsiella pneumonia, Escherichia coli, Aspergillus Niger, Aspergillus flavus, and Fusarium oxysporum. The results of antimicrobial studies revealed that most of the compounds exhibit good activity.

Buchanania lanzan Spreng belongs to the family Anacardiaceae. The primary focus of this study was to examine phytochemical, proximate, antioxidant property and GCMS evaluation of unripe and ripen fruit of B. lanzan Spreng. The phytochemical studies showed that alkaloids, phenols, flavones, saponins, coumarins, glycosides and tannins are present in both ripen and unripe fruits. The proximate evaluation confirmed that crude fat (14.5%) and protein (6.37±0.69 g/100g) is high in ripen fruit. In unripe fruit (11.3%) crude fat and protein (4.11%) is less percent. The carotenoid (5.58 ± 0.5 mg/100g) and catalase (0.226±0.074 mg/100g) activity is higher in unripe fruit. The total polyphenol (6.4±0.8 mg/100g) and peroxidase (0.362±0.017 mg/100g) content show greater activity in ripen fruit. In DPPH and FRAP highest activity showed in methanol extract of ripen and unripe fruit than the other solvent. GC-MS evaluation showed many bioactive compounds present in unripe and ripen fruit. It is concluded that nutritional and bioactive ability is high in ripen and unripe fruits of B. lanzan. The fruits of B.lanzan are a good source of nutrition and medicinally important.

A new coumarin derivative, coumacasia (1) and eight known compounds, coumarin (2), cinnamaldehyde (3), 2-methoxycinnamaldehyde (4), 2-hydroxycinnamaldehyde (5), coniferaldehyde (6), cinnamic acid (7), 2-hydroxycinnamic acid (8), and cinnamic alcohol (9), were isolated from the methanol extract of Cinnamomum cassia. Their structures were elucidated by spectral data and by comparison with the reported literature. The cytotoxic activities of compounds 1-9 were evaluated with two human cancer cell lines, HL-60 and A-549. Compound 1 showed growth inhibitory effects in the HL-60 and A-549 cell lines with IC50 values of 8.2 ± 0.5 and 11.3 ±1.1 μM, respectively. Compounds 3-6, and 8 exhibited moderate cytotoxicity with IC50 values ranging from 20.5 to 65.6 μM.

Bilberry is considered as one of the most economically important wild berries. However, bilberry is not enough investigated, and there are only a few published works. Therefore, we performed in one place complete qualitative analysis, antimicrobial activity against different Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria and contents of metals. In our research, it was found that bilberry contains different active phenolic compounds, such as chlorogenic acid, delphinidin glycoside, delphinidin arabinoside, cyanidin glycoside, cyanidin arabinoside, malvidin glycoside, peonidin glycoside, and malvidin arabinoside. The content of metals was different in leaves and fruits. In our samples, the content of aluminum, boron, barium, calcium, cadmium, chromium, copper, iron, manganese, nickel, phosphorus, silicon and zinc was higher, and contents of potassium, magnesium, and sodium were lower than in bilberry samples investigated in Latvia. Antimicrobial activity of investigated extracts was evaluated against laboratory control strains from ATCC collection, Gram (+) bacteria: Staphylococcus epidermidis ATCC 12228, Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 6538, Streptococcus pyogenes ATCC 19615, Enterococcus faecalis ATCC 19433, Propionibacterium acnae ATCC 11827, and Gram (-) bacteria: Escherichia coli ATCC 9863, Pseudomonas aeruginosa ATCC 9027, Acinetobacter boumanii ATCC 196060, Proteus mirabilis ATCC 12453, Klebsiella pneumonia ATCC 10031, and against related strains isolated from human wound swabs. V. myrtillus extract was less potent against strains from wounds compared to ATCC strains as well Gram (-) bacteria compared to Gram (+) bacteria. The most sensitive strains were St. epidermidis, St. pyogenes, P. mirabilis and S. aureus.

Ficus platyphylla (Fp) has been used in Nigerian traditional medicine for the management of pain, ulcer, wound, epilepsy and inflammation. The efficacy of its gum from the stem bark for the management of wound has been widely acclaimed among the Hausa communities of Northern Nigeria and therefore, this study was aimed at examining the antimicrobial and wound healing potential of methanol extract of F. platyphylla stem bark (MEFpSB) in order to provide scientific basis for its antimicrobial and wound healing properties. Preliminary phytochemical screening was done and antimicrobial activity using some pathogenic micro-organisms were evaluated following its wound healing effectiveness in Wistar rats using the model of superficial skin excision wound. Data were analysed using one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) followed by Dunnet’s t-test. The results of preliminary phytochemical screeningrevealed the presence of carbohydrate, cardiac glycosides, saponins, flavonoids, triterpenes, tannins, alkaloids with anthraquinones absent. The extract showed antimicrobial activity on Staphylococcus aureus, Corynebacterium ulcerans, Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumonia and Salmonella typhi and significant (p< 0.05, p< 0.001) decrease in wound measurement for 11 days. This study demonstrated that MEFpSB possesses antimicrobial activity with wound healing properties that justifies the ethno-medicinal use of the plant in wound/ulcer healings. Bombax ceiba L. is valuable herb in the ayurvedic and traditional systems of medicine. In traditional system of drugs various plant parts and exudates are used as medicine. On the basis of literature survey, plant is found to be beneficial as astringent, cooling, stimulant, diuretic, aphrodisiac, demulcent, dysentery, tonic and also useful in the treatment of asthma, diarrhea, wound healing, leucorrhea, anemia and tuberculosis. Apart from these, it is also reported as anti-inflammatory and hepatoprotective, anticancer and anti-HIV activity, anti-helicobacter pylori activity, antiangiogenic activity, analgesic and antioxidant activity, inhibitory effects on tube-like formation of human umbilical venous cells, hypotensive, hypoglycemic activity, cholinesterase and antimicrobial activity. This review is an attempt to discuss the various pharmacognosy, ethnomedicinal, pharmacology and traditional uses along with reported phytochemical and pharmacological activities of Bombax ceiba.

The genus Cyclamen L. (Primulaceae) is represented by 20 species, where inter alia Cyclamen africanum B. et R, is the only endemic species presented in Algeria. The study of their biological potentialities was evaluated through antioxidant, antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory activities. The antioxidant activity was evaluated by DPPH and the reducing power essay, the antimicrobial activity was tested with three bacterial strains and one yeast (Staphylococcus aureus ATCC25923, Klebsiella pneumonia ATCC700603, Bacillus subtilis ATCC6633 and Candida albicans ATCC1024) and anti-inflammatory activity with the Human Red Blood Cell (HRBC) membrane stabilization method. The results demonstrate a perfect antioxidant activity and an excellent anti- inflammatory power at very small concentrations.
