The theme of illegitimacy Guy de Maupassant evolved in his works this article perceives as one of the factors of the author’s concept of a person and the plane of intersection of the most typical motifs of his short stories. The study of the author’s concept of a person through the prism of polivariability of the motif of a bastard is relevant in today’s revision of traditional values, transformation of the usual social institutions and search for identities, etc. The purpose of the study is to give a definition to the existence specifics of the bastard motif in the Maupassant’s short stories by using historical and literary, comparative, structural methods of analysis as dominant. To do this, I analyze the content, variability and the role of this motive in the formation of the Maupassant’s concept of a person, the author’s innovations in its interpretation from the point of view of literary diachrony. Maupassant interprets the bastard motif in the social, psychological and metaphorical-symbolic sense. For the short stories with the presentation of this motif, I suggest the typology based on the role of it in the structure of the work and the ideological and thematic content: the short stories with a motif-fragment, the ones with the bastard’s leitmotif and the group where the bastard motif becomes a central theme. The Maupassant’s interpretation of the bastard motif combines the general tendencies of its existence in the world’s literary tradition and individual reading. The latter is the result of the author’s understanding of the relevant for the era issues: the transformation of the family model, the interest in the theory of heredity, the strengthening of atheistic sentiments, the growth of frustration in the system of traditional social and moral values etc. This study sets the ground for a prospective analysis of the evolution the bastard motif in the short-story collections of different years or a comparative study of the motif in short stories and novels by Maupassant.

Abstract:The short story of “Perempuan dalam Perang” is one of the short stories in Kumpulan Cerpen Afrika (A collection of African short stories) entitled Kenapa Tidak  Kau Pahat Binatang Lain. The collection of the short stories published in 2005 and translated by Sapardi Djoko Damono. The story told us about the downturn of African countries that became the attraction of imperialism to colonize them. African society is treated as an inferior class of their own land by the West, due to the conflict regarding the sociological and psychological suffering of native women in colonialism. One of the psychological suffering experienced by the native  is the change in ideology leading  to moral degradation. Many of them  change  their mindset and action. The applied method is close reading, using a theoretical approach post-colonialism linked to the perspective of feminism because  this story contained the strong gender issue. What happened in the story was a change in a woman mindset who fought against the colonialist, turned into a struggle for herself. She was trying to survive by selling her own esteem. The gender issues are also inherent in this short story. From feminism point of view, there are things justified in feminist mindset and there are deviations resulting in a feminist perspective that is not appreciated.

The short story is the only genre that can be considered uniquely American. The genre began as sketches, or tales, as in the classic tale “Rip Van Winkle.” The genre remained undefined until Edgar Allan Poe’s well-known 1842 review of Nathaniel Hawthorne’s Twice-Told Tales. Since Poe’s review, in which he distinguished short fiction from other genres, the American short story has evolved both in form and in content. Like other genres, the short story has evolved through various movements and traditions such as realism, modernism, and postmodernism; however, it has remained unique because of publishing opportunities that differ from longer works such as the novel. The short story genre shares elements of fiction with the novel, traditionally consisting of characteristics such as plot, character, setting, point of view, theme, and writing style. Although the short story shares elements of literature and writing devices with other literary genres, avenues for publication differ greatly. Unlike a novel, a short story is not published as a single entity. It is usually presented with works by other authors in a journal or magazine or in a collection of previously published stories by one author. The rise in popular magazines during the 1920s gave rise to the short story, as the magazines provided a publication outlet. During the second half of the 20th century the short story became less commercial and more literary, paving the way for artistic stories such as one appropriately called “The New Yorker Story.” However, as it became less commercial, the short story fell from popularity and became somewhat obscure in the manner in which poetry remains. Because short stories do not sell, publishers are hesitant to produce them. But during the 1970s, American universities began teaching creative writing classes, and the short story provided a suitable genre for teaching the art of fiction writing. Hence, the American short story experienced a renaissance, and a wave of literary journals emerged. About this time, minimalism was one of the styles most often used in the short story. Raymond Carver built on what Ernest Hemingway had started in America, and the short story took on a new form. During the latter half of the 20th century and early 21st century, women and ethnic writers were given more opportunities to publish short fiction, and the short story reflected progress in civil rights issues. Currently, the rise in technological advances has brought even more opportunities for publication, and more and more American authors are publishing short stories online, now a respected publication venue.

From a linguistic point of view, short stories are classified into the type of discourse. Therefore, the tracing of everything on the authors’ intentions can be done through linguistic approaches, among them through discourse and pragmatic analysis approaches. Furthermore, since short stories also classified as works of art (literature), so a semiotic approach can be relevant to support the approaches of discourse and pragmatics analysis. The data in this study comes from the text of a short story titled “Alun-Alun Seribu Patung” by Danarto.  The data was obtained by using observation method through recording technique as a basic technique and note-taking technique as an advanced technique.   Through text deconstruction, at least there are 16 derivative text constructions selected as the data which reflect the association of  the short story with the political reality at the reformation and post-reformation periods (1998—2006). The description of data becomes the clues that actually the author pragmatically did a number of actions, namely reflecting, associating, predicting, evaluating, and criticizing something related to the political and natural events during the reformation and post-reformation periods.

Analysis of the stylistics features of any author has been very interesting technique to explore themes depicted by him/her. This paper examines a short story of Alice Munro titled ‘The Eye’, from stylistic perspective. ‘The Eye’ is the opening tale of the set of four stories, in a style of memoir that is titled as ‘Finale’. This set of four stories appears in her collection of short stories titled “Dear Life” (2012. ) The paper presents the stylistics analysis of the story keeping the stylistic approach in focus suggested by Leech and Short in Style in Style in Fiction (2007). The story is analyzed stylistically in terms of character and characterization, point of view and speech, thought and writing presentation. Stylistic study of any text effectively provides comprehension of the base of the text particularly and its evaluation generally (Peer 2008). In order to carry this out, the method of textual analysis of Qualitative research approach is conducted. The end of the analysis is to have a turnout of a deeper comprehension of the relationship between style and literary aesthetics in ‘The Eye’ by studying the stylistic patterns behind Munro’s narrative, in order to find out her creative approach. Paul Simpson maintains, “Stylistics serves to inquire into the language of the text and on a broader level to investigate creativity in the use of language (2004:3). The endeavor made in the paper explores that Munro has an ambivalent and complicated technique of presentation, both structurally and thematically. Here, the argument is that the stylistic analysis of the story reveals that Munro has high artistic approach towards the short story; she narrates the fiction with such an ambiguous approach that it welcomes more than one interpretations of the story.

In the article The Lemon Table by Julian Barnes is analyzed from the point of view of the mighthave-beens plot functioning in this storybook. This plot is an essential part of the fundamental for this book plot of aging and associated with its physical and mental processes that heroes of these short stories are experienced. The analysis of the majority of the short stories makes it possible to talk about the might-have-beens as metaplot that ties separate short stories of this storybook with each other and forms the unity of the storybook as an artistic whole. A metaplot in prosaic text is understood as that invariant plot that permeates the texts of one or another writer, which is realized in these texts in various versions of event scenarios and expressed in a figurative-motive complex, at the ideological-thematic and narrative levels, at the level of stylistics and artistic tropes of writers works. The might-have-beens metaplot repeats and manifests itself in the short stories in its different event variations and with especial completeness and emphasis in such short stories as Story of Mats Israelson, Hygiene, The Revival, Bark, The Fruit Cage, The Silence. Thus each short story enters into dialogical relationships with other stories, due to the formed internal intertextuality of this storybook and made metatext of J. Barnes fictional prose, as a consequence of the invariant plot of the might-havebeens as the source code of the generation of meaning in the artistic consciousness of the English writer evinced in many of his other works. So the main aim of this article is to discover and analyse the plot of the might-have-beens that becomes metaplot and metamotif of The Lemon Table by J. Barnes. The elements of motif, comparativetypological, receptive-interpretive, and intertextual methods of analysis have been used in this work, which helped to achieve our aim. In Story of Mats Israelson the invariant of the might-have-beens plot is presented in its fullest expression, and this plot in different variations will be repeated in other stories of the storybook. It will become its key motif, which will be related with other central motifs of other short stories of this storybook (the motif of loneliness, love, vanity of life, old age, death and immortality). The might-have-beens metaplot will determine the development of event situations of the short stories with a predictable culmination of misunderstanding and dissatisfaction and with the denouement of feelings or actions that have not found their embodiment, which reveals itself in a separation, alienation or death of the heroes. The might-have-beens metaplot will show the peculiarities of the heroes characters and their reactions to life situations, which will be the result of their individual life fears and complexes, aggravated by the limit situation of imminent death. The might-have-beens metaplot is supported by specific chronotope, which becomes space and time of the unrealized and non-embodied. This plot and motif are evinced in the short stories of The Lemon Book with the help of artistic metonymy and a discourse of silence, that fully expresses the impossibility of embodying the heroes feelings and their deepest desires. But in any event variations, the might-have-beens metaplot keeps structural and semantic core that is the life path of the short stories heroes determined by non- embodiment of their innermost desires, intentions and expectations. However, the precise impracticability of dreams, the unfulfillment of aspirations cause the piercingly sad and universal meaning of life of the heroes of The Lemon Table by J. Barnes.

Short stories are one type of modern literary work that has the privilege of forming a whole short story but still interesting for readers. The whole story in the short story cannot be separated from the elements that make it up. This study aimed to determine the intrinsic elements of the short story Yuki no Hi by Higuchi Ichiyō. The elements analyzed were themes and messages, characters and characterizations, plot, setting, and point of view. The theory used is the theory of structuralism with literature review techniques and qualitative analysis techniques. This research shows that the structure of this short story forms a unity of an exciting story from beginning to the end because of the integration of intrinsic elements in supporting the story presented. In addition, the use of deautomation techniques that delay the reader's understanding until the end of the story has succeeded in making the suspense of the story more interesting
