Ernest Hemingway was an American novelist and short story writer and journalist. His real name is Ernest Miller Hemingway. He is a Nobel and Pulitzer Prize-winning writer. He wrote his first articles in the school newspaper. In 1917, America was slowly joining World War I.Heminquey immediately enlisted in the army, but was not accepted because his left eye was weak. A year later, he entered the Red Crescent and volunteered to drive an ambulance. He was wounded in an explosion near the war, carrying an Italian soldier on his shoulder while he was wounded, and was wounded in the leg. After that, he was declared a hero in Italy and received the "Silver Medal of Honor". While in treatment in Milan, he fell in love with a nurse, and this love led him to write a masterpiece - "Goodbye, guns." Heminquey wrote mainly about his life experiences. This can be seen in "Goodbye, weapons". The writer, who reached the peak of his career with "Who the bells are ringing for", continued his life by participating in wars. Doris Lessing, the Nobel Laureate (1919-2007), a British novelist, poet, a writer of epic scope, playwright, librettist, biographer and short story writer. She was the “most fearless woman novelist in the world, unabashed ex-communist and uncompromising feminist”. Doris has earned the great reputation as a distinguished and outstanding writer. She raised local and private problems of England in post-war period with emphasis on man-woman relationship, feminist movement, welfare state, socio-economic and political ethos, population explosion, terrorism and social conflicts in her novels.

This paper analyzes John Updike’s short story “A & P” in the light of Max Weber’s notion of moral decision-making. A prominent contemporary American story-writer and literary critic, Updike has devoted his fiction to subjects’ rational and moral problems in the contemporary consumerist society. Updike’s lifelong probing into the middle classes’ lives is a body of fiction that raises questions about determinism, moral decision, and social responsibility, among others. “A & P” is a revealing example of such fiction and one among Updike’s most frequently anthologized short stories. The story, titled after a nationwide American shopping mall in the early twentieth century, investigates the possibility of decision-making within consumerist society. This paper demonstrates how Updike’s portrayal of his characters’ everyday lives reveals the predicament of intellectual thinking and moral decision-making in a consumerist society and warns against the loss of individual will in such societies.

Leonid Nikolaevich Andreev was a prolific Russian author, widely popular in the first decade of the 20th century, whose fictional and dramatic works spanned the divide between realism and symbolism. Andreev was born in Orel, a provincial capital south of Moscow, and died in Finland. He studied law in St Petersburg and Moscow. After a brief and unsuccessful legal career, he worked as a journalist, prose writer and dramatist, quickly making a name for himself as a successful short-story writer once his stories began to appear in newspapers. His first published volume of stories (1901) was an immediate success, with its first two printings selling out in two weeks. He turned to playwriting five years later, although he continued to write short stories until late in life. Andreev’s creative work sparked much debate from both realist and symbolist writers. He developed a close friendship with realist writer Maxim Gorky, although the two grew to disagree on questions of literary style and politics, as Andreev’s work strayed from its early realist tendencies and revolutionary ideals. Gorky mentored Andreev in his early career and spearheaded a collection of literary reminiscences by famous writers upon the latter’s death. Andreev’s popularity waned, along with his health, during the final decade of his life.

John Lehmann’s The Penguin New Writing (1940-1950) is considered one of the finest literary periodicals of World War Two. The journal was committed to publishing writing about all aspects of wartime life, from the front lines to daily civilian struggles, by writers from around the world. It had an engaged readership and a high circulation. This chapter specifically considers Lehmann’s contribution to the wartime heyday for the short story form, through the example of The Penguin New Writing. By examining Lehmann’s editorial approach this chapter reveals the ways he actively engaged with his contributors, teasing and coaxing short stories out of them and contrasts this with the editorial style of Cyril Connolly at rival Horizon magazine. Stories by, and Lehmann’s interactions with, established writers such as Elizabeth Bowen, Henry Green and Rosamond Lehmann, the emerging writer William Sansom and working-class writers B.L Coombs and Jim Phelan, are the main focus of this chapter. The international outlook of the journal, which promoted satire from China alongside short, mocking works by Graham Greene, is also evaluated as an often overlooked aspect of Lehmann’s venture. Through the short stories and Lehmann’s editorials, this chapter traces how Lehmann sought to shape literature and to elevate the short story form. The chapter concludes by considering how the decline of the short story form in Britain from the 1950s onwards was closely linked to the demise of the magazines which had most actively supported it.

Junot Díaz is a Dominican American award-winning fiction writer and essayist. For over twenty years his work has helped to map and remap Latinx, Caribbean, and American literary and cultural studies. Since his collection of short stories, Drown, debuted in 1996, Díaz has become a leading literary figure in Latinx, Afro-Latinx, and diaspora studies. His voice is critically linked to the legacy of Latinx Caribbean literary poetics reaching back to the 1960s (including Piri Thomas’s Down These Mean Streets, 1967). Díaz’s work is likewise transnational and diasporic, often reflecting the lived experiences of working-class immigrant populations of color in northeastern urban centers. Within a broader scope, Díaz’s writing is tied to feminist African American and Chicana literary traditions, with Díaz citing the influence of writers such as Toni Morrison and Sandra Cisneros in his writing practice. His 2007 award-winning novel, The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao, earned him a Pulitzer Prize in fiction and catapulted him into literary superstardom. Díaz followed that success with his 2012 collection of short stories, This Is How You Lose Her, which was a finalist for both the 2012 National Book Award for Fiction and the 2013 Andrew Carnegie Medal for Excellence in Fiction. In 2012, Díaz was conferred the MacArthur Fellows Program Award, commonly known as the MacArthur “Genius Grant,” and in 2017, he was inducted into the American Academy of Arts and Letters. In 2019, he was the Rudge and Nancy Allen Professor of Writing at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and the fiction editor at the renowned literary magazine the Boston Review. Over the course of his professional writing career, Díaz has published numerous nonfiction essays and political commentaries, and coauthored opinion editorials on immigration and reflections on Caribbean and US politics. His short story “Monstro,” published in 2012, further rooted Díaz in the genres of science fiction and Afrofuturism. “Monstro” was understood to be a teaser for a now discarded novel of the same name. The simultaneous publication of the English-language Islandborn and Spanish-language Lola in 2018 represented the author’s first foray into the genre of children’s literature. Like much of Díaz’s literary oeuvre, the children’s books chronicle the experiences and memories of Afro-Dominicans in the diaspora through the perspective of a child narrator. Díaz is one of the founders of Voices of Our Nation (VONA), a summer creative writing workshop for writers of color where he helps aspiring writers to workshop their fiction. Díaz’s fiction and nonfiction writings have catalyzed work in literary, Latinx, and Afro-Latinx studies, prompting renewed discourses on literary representations of masculinity, gender, sexuality, intimacy, sexual violence, dictatorship, immigration, disability, Dominican history, race and anti-blackness, anti-Haitianism, decolonization and radical politics, and diaspora and belonging.

Sastra Peranakan Tionghoa adalah karya sastra dalam bahasa Indonesia yang dihasilkan oleh orang Tionghoa yang dilahirkan di Indonesia. Seusai Perang Dunia II, sastra peranakan tetap berkembang. Bentuknya bukan lagi novel tetapi cerpen. Namun, berbeda dengan keadaan sebelum Perang Dunia II, pada zaman Pasca-Perang itu tidak lagi terdapat majalah seperti Tjerita Romans atau Penghidoepan. Kebanyakan karya dimuat dalam majalah-majalah umum atau berita, seperti Star Weekly, Liberal, dan Pantjawarna. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah melihat kontribusi majalah Star Weekly, Pantjawarna, dan Liberal pada tahun 1950-an terhadap publikasi karya penulis Tionghoa. Metode yang digunakan adalah metode kualitatif dan deskriptif.  Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa cerpen dalam majalah Star Weekly, Liberal, dan Pantjawarna menggambarkan religiositas masyarakat Tionghoa dalam menjalani kehidupan yang multikultural di Indonesia. Konsep kemanusiaan dalam ajaran Konghucu erat kaitannya dengan konsep Tepa Sarira dalam kebudayaan Jawa. Chinese Literature is literary works in Indonesian produced by Chinese people who were born in Indonesia. After World War II, peranakan literature continued to flourish. The form is no longer a novel but a short story. However, in contrast to the situation before World War II, the Post-War era there were no magazines anymore, such as Tjerita Romans or Penghidoepan. Most of his work is published in public magazines or news, such as Star Weekly, Liberal, and Pantja Warna. The purpose of this study is to look at the contributions of Star Weekly, Pantja Warna and Liberal magazines in the 1950s to the publication of works by Chinese writers. The method used is qualitative and descriptive methods. The results showed that short stories in Star Weekly, Liberal, and Pantjawarna, magazines illustrate the religiosity of the Chinese community in leading a multicultural life in Indonesia. The concept of humanity in Confucianism is closely related to the concept of Tepa Sarira in Javanese culture.

Basing on poetics, structure of works and motif / archetype of the Wise Old Man, the paper examines and compares the image of the Old Man in three short stories: Tocka by Anton Chekhov (Russian), A Clean, Well-Lighted Place by Ernest Hemingway (American) and Lao Hac by Nam Cao (Vietnamese). In each short story, the old man leads a lonely life. Their loneliness can’t sometimes be shared or isn’t shared such as the case of Iona Potapov, in Tocka of Anton Chekhov, who just lost his son last week; of the Old Man, in A Clean, Well-Lighted Place of Ernest Hemingway who suffered from loneliness in his old age; and of Lao Hac, in Nam Cao’s work of the same title, who, with hopelessness, has gone away to work in plantation for three years because his poor son couldn’t afford to get married. If the impact of rural elements in the process of social development from agriculture to industry is taken into consideration, we can put these three short stories in the following sequence: Lao Hac (1943) of Nam Cao, Tocka (1871) of Anton Chekhov, and A Clean, Well-Lighted Place (1933) of Ernest Hemingway. It seems that the more the society is urbanized, the more loneliness can’t be wiped out. Now, the deeply rooted characters of the archetype of the Wise Old Man (according to Jung) are expressed in only three points: how to best bahave in loneliness.

This study aims to describe the structure of the story through intrinsic elements, namely the facts of the story and literary means contained in short stories written by students of class IX MTs Al-Furqon Klari Karawang and their use as a Learning Implementation Plan (RPP). Sources of data in this study were several short stories written by students of class IX MTs Al-Furqon Klari Karawang. The data in this study are statements or sentences written in short stories written by students describing Robert Stanton's structuralism and categorized into two parts, namely the facts of the story and literary means. The results of this study reveal that the short stories written by students of class IX MTs Al-Furqon Klari Karawang mostly describe the personal life experiences of the author. The short story composition has a story structure in terms of intrinsic elements, namely the facts of the story, namely in terms of plot, characters, setting and theme. Not only in terms of the facts of the story but literary means which can be divided into five parts, namely; title, point of view, style and tone, symbolism and irony. Abstrak Penelitian ini bertujuan mendeskripsikan struktur cerita melalui unsur intrinsik yakni fakta-fakta cerita dan sarana-sarana sastra yang terdapat dalam karangan cerpen karya siswa kelas IX MTs Al-Furqon Klari Karawang beserta pemanfaatannya sebagai Rencana Pelaksanaan Pembelajaran (RPP). Sumber data dalam penelitian ini adalah beberapa karangan cerpen siswa kelas IX MTs Al- Furqon Klari Karawang. Data dalam penelitian ini adalah pernyataan atau kalimat yang tertuang dalam teks cerpen karangan siswa yang mendeskripsikan strukturalisme Robert Stanton dan dikategorikan menjadi dua bagian yaitu fakta- fakta cerita dan sarana-sarana sastra. Hasil penelitian ini mengungkapakan bahwa pada karangan cerpen karya siswa kelas IX MTs Al-Furqon Klari Karawang ini sebagian besar menggambarkan pengalaman kehidupan pribadi pengarang. Karangan cerpen tersebut memilki struktur cerita dari segi unsur intrinsik yakni fakta-fakta cerita yaitu dari segi alur, karakter, latar dan tema. Tidak hanya dari segi fakta-fakta cerita melainkan sarana-sarana sastra yang dapat dibagi menjadi lima bagian yakni; judul, sudut pandang, gaya dan tone, simbolisme dan ironi. Karangan cerpen tersebut terdapat dua pokok pembahasan yang akan dianalisis yaitu, kajian struktural Robert Stanton dan pemanfaatannya sebagai rencana pelaksanaan pembelajaran. Islam is a complete code of life. Saadat Hasan Manto (11 May 1912 – 18 January 1955) was a writer author born in Ludhiana active in British India and later, after the partition, in Pakistan. Writing mainly in the Urdu language, he produced 22 collections of short stories, a novel, five series of radio plays, three collections of essays and two collections of personal sketches. Manto was known to write about the hard truths of society that no one dared to talk about. A review of Mumtaz Shireen book “Manto: Noori Na Nari”. Mumtaz Shireen is a Story Writer as well as an exceptional Critic of Urdu Fiction. She Presents her Critical reviews in a solid and well-reasoned manner in light of international literature. Mumtaz Shireen is Considered as one of the foremost critics of fiction. She has discussed the feature of novel, novelette, novella and short story. In   term of criticism, two of her books are worth mentioning the first book “Mayar” is a compilation of 13 of her critical essays. The 2nd “Manto: Noori Na Nari” is a compilation of Mumtaz Shireen’s miscellaneous writings about Manto. The following article is a comparative overview of book “Manto: Noori Na Nari” and Islamic Values and his place according to Islamic Values.

This study aims to explore the language style of Ernest Hemingway’s short story “The Old Man”. This research describes the stylistic used in the short story. Ernest Hemingway is one of the famous writers of prose and short story. Many people recognize his special works for short stories because Ernest Hemingway has a characteristic that makes him one of the best short story writers in Europe from a young age. My Old Man is the first work known for the lot use of stylistic styles that distinguish this story from Hemingway’s other works. The researcher limits the stylistic only to explore linguistics such as pragmatics and semantics. In addition, the researcher explains the features of stylistic devices which are on simile, poetry, and calque. This study combines 2 methods of analysis, namely textual and stylistic analysis. The results illustrated how Hemingway used stylistic to describe a child as the narrator, where he told in detail the dark experiences of his father in the world of horse racing in a coherent manner. Hemingway combined his imagination with processing language styles in the story.
