Objective: The aim of the study was to evaluate the ability of pharmacy students to assess their learning. Methods: Without pre-class preparation or access to learning resources, third-year pharmacy students were asked to list in preset templates the important points of topics that were covered two weeks earlier including Alzheimer’s, Huntington’s chorea and Parkinson’s diseases, structure short essay questions guided by these lists and answer them. In the first section, students worked individually while in the second and third sections they worked in groups of four. At the end of each session, students were asked to fill in a pre-piloted ethically approved questionnaire on their perception of the present exercise and learning strategies and examinations. Results: The majority of participants (n: 51; 85%) were females and with GPAs ranging from 2.5-4. The important points listed by students focused on the aetiology and treatment of the disorders. However, the questions framed by grouped students and their answers were more thorough and well organised. Half of the participants reported the aim of tests was to improve their learning and the majority (93%, 85% and 85%) of students preferred pre-scheduled tests, paper examinations and lectures using PowerPoint presentations respectively. In their reflection on the exercise, most students enjoyed it and found it effective in enhancing their learning. Conclusion: The present pedagogy enhances learning, writing skills, group collaboration and team spirit. Its application in other classes and topics would strengthen its value in enhancing learning.

Abstract This research study has been conducted to experiment an innovative teaching approach believing that when less use of self-regulated learning strategy leads to lower metacognitive learning attitude which results in low proficiency. This study has investigated the consequences of instructionally aroused cognitive involvement load for self-monitoring and self-assessment through facilitation of metacognitive learning strategy use for improving L2 writing skills of Thai undergraduate students. This innovative instructional model for teaching self-regulated L2 writing has been named as Strategic Self-Regulated Metacognitive Activities or S2RMCA. The approach of this model has been developed to promote self-regulated learning management. For stimulating the use of learning strategies, a set of self-monitoring and self-evaluating assessment rubric named Strategy Inventories for Learning L2 Writing (SILL2W) has also been devised. A set of questionnaire, pre-post-tests, checklist, and interviews were employed for collecting and analyzing the data. Results of data analyses have shown effectiveness and feasibility of the S2RMCA model for teaching self-regulated L2 writing. Satisfactory results have also been shown by participants in their L2 writing skills. So far, research studies conducted on cognitive involvement load, a continuing challenge has always been there regarding the accurate measurement of load via self-reporting and this study has also faced that challenge.

Landslide hazard has always been a significant source of economic losses and fatalities in the mountainous regions. Knowledge of the spatial extent of the past and present landslide activity, compiled in the form of a landslide inventory map, is essential for effective risk management. High-resolution data acquired by Earth observation (EO) satellites are often used to map landslides by identifying morphological expressions that can be associated with past and/or recent deformation. This is a slow and difficult process as it requires extensive manual efforts. As a result, such maps are not readily available for all the landslide hazard affected regions. Fully automated methods are required to exploit the exponentially increasing amount of EO data available for landslide hazard assessments. In this context, conventional methods like pixel-based and object-based machine learning strategies have been studied extensively in the last decade. Recent advances in convolutional neural network (CNN), a type of deep-learning method, has outperformed other conventional learning methods in similar image interpretation tasks. In this work, we present a deep-learning based method for semantic segmentation of landslides from EO images. We present the results from a study area in the south of Portland in Oregon, USA. The landslide inventory for training and ground truth was extracted from the Statewide Landslide Information Database of Oregon (SLIDO). We were able to achieve a probability of detection (POD) greater than 0.70. This method can also be extended to be used for rapid mapping of landslides after a major triggering event (like earthquake or extreme metrological event) has occurred.

This work is done in the framework of European Commission's Horizon 2020 project "BETTER”. Learning strategies/methods are very important in learning. Errors in the selection of strategies/learning methods can be a barrier to the course of teaching and learning activities (KBM). Arabic is one of the subjects that is highly emphasized in Darusy Syahadah Islamic boarding school. The ability of the Arabic language for a santri is like a weapon that they will use in battle to search for and explore the Islamic sciences. However, in his journey there were several problems encountered in learning Arabic, including the emergence of drowsiness and boredom that befell students while attending Arabic learning. With these problems, it is necessary to have community service activities in order to create a more creative and attractive learning atmosphere for students. The purpose of this community service activity is to provide assistance in the application of the Musābaqah Biṭāqah Mukhtaliṭul Kalimah method in learning Arabic. The implementation method in this community service activity includes four stages, namely the planning stage, the implementation phase, the observation and evaluation stage, and finally the reflection phase. With the application of the Musābaqah Biṭāqah Mukhtaliṭul Kalimah method, it is proven that it can increase the activeness and enthusiasm of student learning which impacts on increasing student learning outcomes. So the development of the Musābaqah Biṭāqah Mukhtaliṭul Kalimah method as well as other active learning methods is very necessary in order to increase student interest in learning.

Skill of fifth grade student of Cipinang Muara 06 State Elementary School in writing report is still low. This is evidenced by the average scores before giving the action, which is 68.66. The average score of students who are still below the minimum completion criteria is due to poor students in writing sentences in accordance with the correct structure, the sentences are not structured in accordance with the Indonesian Spelling, the selection of standard words is still not quite right. In addition, students have not been able to write a factual report, the written report has not been coherent and has not explained clearly the events observed. In addition, teachers are still applying classical teaching methods with lecturing and assignment methods that are based solely on guidebooks only. This causes students to be less motivated so they have not been able to improve their skills in report writing. Learning to write observational reports made in class makes the students less able to write reports in accordance with the conditions and facts about the things that must be considered in writing the report. The formulation of the problems contained in this study are (1) How the project-based learning method can improve the skills of writing reports to students in fifth grade at Cipinang Muara 06 State Elementary School; and (2) Will the project-based learning method improve the writing skills of the students in fifth grade at Cipinang Muara 06 State Elementary School? The purpose of this study is to describe the process of learning to write observational reports during the use of project-based learning methods, the skills of writing student observation reports after using project-based learning methods, and changes in student behavior after following the learning of writing observation reports through project-based learning methods to students of fifth grade Cipinang Muara 06 State Elementary School. This study uses a classroom action research design. Subjects in this study were fifth grade students that amount 29 students consisting of 15 male students and 14 female students. This study consists of two cycles. Each cycle consists of several stages, namely planning, action, observation, and reflection. Data collection was done using test techniques and nontest techniques. The test technique is used to know the quantitative results. The result is obtained from the test of students' writing skill, while nontest technique is used to collect student activity data during the learning process. Nontest techniques were obtained with observation guides, observations of student and teacher activities, as well as video and photo documentation. The data analysis technique of this research is qualitative and quantitative. The results showed that there was an increase in the process of learning to write observational reports during the use of project-based learning methods. The improvement of the process is evidenced by the result of the students' writing skill skill which increases in cycle I and cycle II, besides the learning of writing the observation report which more smoothly in cycle II and the more conducive classroom atmosphere. The skills of writing observational reports increased after using project-based learning methods. This improvement is seen from the students' learning completeness which reached 51.73% in cycle I and increased by 93.11% in the second cycle with an average value of 82.28. In addition, the increase occurred in the behavior of students after following the study writing observation report. Students are more active in learning because learning is more interesting. Based on the results of the research, the use of project-based learning methods can assist students in writing observational reports because students can put their ideas and ideas into a writing based on observations that have been done directly so as to increase students' writing skills in writing observation reports.
