Charmakeela is one of the Kshudraroga mentioned by Acharya Sushrutha and Vagbhata. Vyanavata combines with Kapha produces piles on the exterior of the skin resembling a nail which is static or immov-able and rough is called as Charmakeela. Based upon the clinical features explained in Ayurveda, Char-makeela can be correlated with that of warts. Objective: The present study was to evaluate the comparative effect of Kadalikshara and Apamargakshara in the management of Charmakeela. Methods: 40 patients were randomly selected and divided into 2 groups. Results: The statistical Analysis the study reveals there is no significant difference between found statistically between Kadalikshara and Apamargakshara, so both KadaliKshara and ApamargaKshara are having same Qualitative Equanimity effect of treatment on the disease. Conclusion: As observed from the results the total removal of Charmakeela was possible in all cases and it proves the authenticity of the classical ayurvedic reference which state that Charmakeela can be removed by the application of Prathisarneeyakshara. In this study the action of the drugs KadaliKshara and ApamargaKshara on the removal of Charmakeelais well established. The clearance may be faster in case of thin lesions and it may be slower in case of thicker lesion because of variations in the thickness of morbid growth in all patient, removal of lesion of Charmakeela there may be slight blackish brown discol-ouration occurs at the site of lesion was observed. This may be considered as Samyakdagdhalaxanas of Kshara Karma which will disappear gradually.

Dushta Vrana is a common and frequently encountered problem faced in surgical practice. The presence of Dushta Vrana worsens the condition of the patient with different complications and may become fatal. Local factors on wound like slough, infection and foreign body, affect the normal process of healing. A healthy wound in a normal body heals earlier with a minimum scar as compared to a contaminated wound. Therefore in this study all the efforts are made to make a Dushta Vrana into a Shuddha Vrana. Once the Vrana becomes Shuddha, Ropana of the Vrana will start. The objective of the study was to evaluate the clinical efficacy of Jatyadi Taila and Jatyadi Ghrita in Dushta Vrana. Clinically diagnosed 60 Patients of Dushta Vrana were randomly divided into two groups, each consisting of 30 Patients. Group A were treated with the Jatyadi Taila and Group B was treated by Jatyadi Ghrita. The results observed was based on the relief obtained on the subjective and objective parameters taken for consideration for this study viz, size of ulcer, discharge, smell, pain, burning sensation, itching and granulation were found significant (P Lass Than 0.05). On the basis of assessment criteria and overall result of treatment, the patients of Jatyadi Taila group showed better results when compared to Jatyadi Ghrita group. Even though statistically there is no much significant difference between the two groups, but by seeing the effect on individual parameters (subjective and objective) and over all response, Jatyadi Taila seems to be effective when compared to Jatyadi Ghrita. It is having more Ropana qualities when compared to Shodhana.

Integrating the properties of computer algebra systems and dynamic geometry environments, Geogebra became an effective and powerful tool for teaching and learning mathematics. One of the reasons that teachers use Geogebra in mathematics classrooms is to make students learn mathematics meaningfully and conceptually. From this perspective, the purpose of this study was to investigate whether instruction with Geogebra has effect on students’ achievements regarding their conceptual and procedural knowledge on the applications of derivative subject. This study adopted the quantitative approach with pre-test post-test control group true experimental design. The participants were composed of two calculus classrooms involving 31 and 24 students, respectively. The experimental group with 31 students received instruction with Geogebra while the control group received traditional instruction in learning the applications of derivative. Independent samples t-test was used in the analysis of the data gathered from students’ responses to Applications of Derivative Test which was subjected to them before and after teaching processes. The findings indicated that instruction with Geogebra had positive effect on students’ scores regarding conceptual knowledge and their overall scores. On the other hand, there was no significant difference between experimental and control group students’ scores regarding procedural knowledge. It could be concluded that students in both groups were focused on procedural knowledge to be successful in learning calculus subjects including applications of derivative in both groups. On the other hand, instruction with Geogebra supported students’ learning these subjects meaningfully and conceptually.

A clinical study has been conducted to test the efficacy of Ecocid® S, a biocidal agent. The active substance is potassium peroxysulphate and is used in clinical practice after the mechanical cleaning of various surfaces that act as potential sources of infection transmission. We determined 29 swabbing points, from which 87 samples were collected with cotton swabs. Swabs were submitted for microbiological testing to evaluate microbial contamination before cleaning, and before and after disinfection with Ecocid® S. We submitted 63 swabs from 21 swabbing points for further statistical analysis. Five swabs were excluded because the presence of bacteria in the swabs before disinfection had not been determined. The clinical study on the efficacy of Ecocid® S disinfectant showed that it is effective with an average reduction in contamination of 95.75%. The disinfectant was also active with a significantly reduced time of action: it was removed with dry paper towels from all sampling points, except the floor scales, only 5 to 10 minutes after application. The time required for the proper preparation of examination tables and other equipment in clinical practice is of vital importance for a smooth workflow.Key words: animals; disinfection; potassium peroxysulphate; Ecocid® S ZMANJŠANJE ŠTEVILA BAKTERIJ PO UPORABI RAZKUŽILA ECOCID®S (RAZKUŽILO NA OSNOVI KALIJEVEGA PEROKSISULFATA) V PROSTORIH KLINIKE ZA MALE ŽIVALIPovzetek: S klinično študijo smo želeli ugotoviti učinkovitosti biocidnega razkužila ECOCID®S.

Nowadays, people are more vulnerable to metabolic disorders due to their faulty dietary and behavioural habits. One such disorder is Vatarakta which causes functional impairment due to involvement of Sandhi (joints). It is manifested by Ruk, Toda, Sparsha asahatva, Shopha, Raga, Daha and Stabdhata in Sandhi. Vatarakta can be correlated with Hyperuricaemia or Gout due to similarity in their clinical features. Hyperuricaemia is defined as abnormally high level of uric acid in blood (i.e. >6mg/dl in female and >7mg/dl in male). On the other hand, Gout is an inflammatory response to monosodium urate crystals formed secondary to hyperuricaemia. Aims and objectives: 1. To evaluate the effectiveness of Trikarshika kwatha and lifestyle modification in the management of Vatarakta. 2. To compare the effects of Trikarshika kwatha with and without lifestyle modification in the management of Vatarakta. Materials and methods: Raw herbs of the research formulation were collected after proper identification and Kwatha was prepared for oral administration. For the clinical study, total 60 patients were selected on the basis of selection criteria. Selected patients were randomly divided into two groups. (i) Group A: 30 patients were treated with Trikarshika kwatha. (ii) Group B: 30 patients were treated with Trikarshika kwatha along with Lifestyle modification. Individual patient was treated for 45 days along with follow up at the interval of every 15 days. To assess the effectiveness of treatment, scoring pattern was followed for subjective and objective parameters. They were assessed before and after treatment. The collected data were analysed statistically by using Paired t-test. Results: On the basis of all statistical data, it can be said that patients of Group B showed better results in all parameters in comparison to patients of Group A. Conclusion: Both Trikarshika kwatha and Lifestyle modification are affective but Trikarshika kwatha with Lifestyle modification is more effective than Trikarshika kwatha without Lifestyle modification in the management of Vatarakta.

Objectives The British honours system is one of the oldest in the world rewarding individuals, including those of the medical profession. The authors were interested to see if any particular specialty was honoured to a greater extent. We aimed to establish the number of those honoured, the duration of clinical practice involved, as well as additional factors. Design A retrospective analysis of doctors receiving honours (Knight/Dame, CBE, OBE, MBE) in the last decade was performed. Setting UK-registered doctors. Participants Doctors were identified from publicly available listings. Main outcome measures Demographics of all honoured doctors, including number of years of service, specialty affiliation and the number of recipients holding professorial status were collected. Clinicians were stratified into four subgroups: General Practitioners, Physicians, Surgeons and Others. Data were analysed using parametric statistical tests. Results Four hundred and seventeen doctors were identified. Four hundred and two clinicians had a documented subspecialty affiliation. Of the 402: GPs ( n = 142), Physicians ( n = 100), Surgeons ( n = 34) and Others ( n = 126). The number of years in clinical practice from registration to conference of honours was significantly shorter for GPs when compared to hospital-based specialties ( P < 0.05). The top 10 specialties of individuals honoured are tabulated. Professors constituted 30% ( n = 131) of those honoured. These individuals were sub-divided according to specialty affiliation with a significant difference observed ( P < 0.05). Conclusions The most honoured specialty was General Practice. However, when corrected for total subspecialty population, the number one ranking specialty was Public Health Medicine. Academic clinicians are well represented. The findings may be of interest to the medical community.

A study was conducted to determine the prevalence of and potential risk factors for feline hyperthyroidism in Hong Kong. Serum total thyroxine (T4) was measured in 305 cats aged 10 years and older that presented at various veterinary clinics in Hong Kong. The prevalence of hyperthyroidism (T4>50 nmol/l) within this population was 3.93% and there was no significant difference in prevalence between healthy (3.16%) and sick (4.37%) cats. Older cats (>15 years) were more likely to be affected and domestic shorthair cats were less likely to be diagnosed with hyperthyroidism than the other breeds combined. No specific association between the development of feline hyperthyroidism and food type was observed. The prevalence of feline hyperthyroidism in Hong Kong was less than that reported for most other parts of the world, despite the presence of previously identified risk factors.

Objectives The objective of this study was to determine the effect of administration rate on propofol dose for induction of anesthesia and the effect of methadone on this dose. Methods This was a prospective, randomized, blinded clinical study. Forty male cats (mean ± SD age 1.5 ± 0.8 years) were admitted for orchiectomy. Cats were randomly allocated to receive acepromazine (0.05 mg/kg) with either methadone (MET; 0.3 mg/kg) or saline (SAL; 0.03 ml/kg). Each premedication group then received anesthetic induction with propofol at 5 (F) or 1.5 mg/kg/min (S), resulting in the following four groups: MET-F, SAL-F, MET-S and SAL-S. Sedation scores were assigned at 15 and 30 mins after premedication using a simple descriptive scale (SDS) and a visual analog scale (VAS). After assignment of sedation scores, respiratory frequency ( fR) was recorded, and anesthetic induction began and was continued until cats lost their palpebral reflexes and jaw tone, and the eye globe rotated ventromedially. The time for induction and the total amount of propofol needed was recorded, and intubation was then performed. After intubation, fR was also recorded. Results SDS and VAS sedation scores were low at 15 and 30 mins after premedication. There was no significant difference in sedation scores by time or between the groups at any time on any scale. The amount of propofol needed to achieve anesthetic induction was 5.3 ± 1.1 mg/kg in group MET-F, which was statistically lower when compared with the other three groups, which demonstrated no difference among them. Conclusions and relevance Premedication with acepromazine and methadone was not able to produce adequate sedation in healthy cats. The slow induction rate is not adequate for use in cats considering that all of the animals demonstrated excitement during anesthetic induction. The fast administration rate was able to produce adequate induction of anesthesia and reduce the amount of propofol needed to achieve intubation only when using methadone.

Background: Acne vulgaris is characterised by comedones, papules, pustules and nodules occurring in a sebaceous distribution. Topical treatments, such as adapalene and benzoyl peroxide, are popular in mild to moderate acne vulgaris. This study was aimed to compare the efficacy and safety of adapalene with benzoyl peroxide in the patients of mild to moderate acne vulgaris. Methods: We planned a randomized, open-labelled, prospective study to compare the efficacy and side effects of adapalene and benzoyl peroxide in acne patients. A total of 100 patients with mild to moderate acne vulgaris were included in the study. They were randomly divided into 2 groups with 50 patients in each group. One group was given 0.1% adapalene gel and the other group received 2.5% benzoyl peroxide gel. Efficacy was assessed as reduction in the lesion counts, whereas for safety, the side effects like dryness, burning, irritation, erythema were recorded during the treatment. Total duration of the study was 3 months. Results: The study revealed that adapalene was more effective than benzoyl peroxide in treating non-inflammatory and inflammatory lesions of acne vulgaris, and there was a statistically significant difference found between the groups (p≤0.05) in efficacy. Adapalene was also found to be comparatively safer than benzoyl peroxide because the patients treated with adapalene had lesser side effects than those treated with benzoyl peroxide. Conclusions: Our study concludes a better efficacy and safety of adapalene than benzoyl peroxide in the treatment of mild to moderate acne vulgaris.
