The author deliberates on the sudden rise of mucormycosis during the second wave of COVID-19 in India and also the increased incidence of post-COVID morbidities. The role of unhygienic use of face masks and prolonged use of respirators in changing the microclimate of the nose and its effect on the respiratory physiology have been discussed. The author has put forward some suggestions for the readers to consider.

Greece emerged as the EU’s poster child in the fight against COVID-19 during the first few months of the pandemic. In this contribution, we assess Greece’s use of soft regulation in its regulatory response to COVID-19. Using “acts of legislative content”, which can be broadly conceptualised as softly adopted hard law, the Greek government largely achieved flexibility and simplified adoption procedures without having to resort to soft law per se. The role of soft law was limited - it complemented hard law rather than constituting the primary basis of COVID-19 restrictions - but not completely negligible. Soft law instruments regulated the processing of personal data, and was also pivotal in clarifying the criminal sanctioning of COVID-related rule violations. Greece’s success in handling the first wave of the pandemic, while effective, was arguably unfair to asylum seekers who saw their right to apply for asylum curtailed, and their right to freedom of movement restricted when limitations on the rest of the population were lifted. With a second wave of infections currently in full swing, it is imperative to keep scrutinising regulatory responses to ensure that they place the health and dignity of every individual (whoever they might be) at their core and fully respect their fundamental rights.

We propose two stochastic models for the Coronavirus pandemic. The statistical properties of the models, in particular the correlation functions and the probability density functions, were duly computed. Our models take into account the adoption of lockdown measures as well as the crucial role of hospitals and health care institutes. To accomplish this work we adopt a kinetic-type reaction approach where the modelling of the lockdown measures is obtained by introducing a new mathematical basis and the intensity of the stochastic noise is derived by statistical mechanics. We analysed two scenarios: the stochastic SIS-model (Susceptible ⇒ Infectious ⇒ Susceptible) and the stochastic SIS-model integrated with the action of the hospitals; both models take into account the lockdown measures. We show that, for the case of the stochastic SIS-model, once the lockdown measures are removed, the Coronavirus infection will start growing again. However, the combined contributions of lockdown measures with the action of hospitals and health institutes is able to contain and even to dampen the spread of the SARS-CoV-2 epidemic. This result may be used during a period of time when the massive distribution of vaccines in a given population is not yet feasible. We analysed data for USA and France. In the case of USA, we analysed the following situations: USA is subjected to the first wave of infection by Coronavirus and USA is in the second wave of SARS-CoV-2 infection. The agreement between theoretical predictions and real data confirms the validity of our approach.

The second wave of COVID-19 emerged in the late fall months in the state of Massachusetts and inadvertently caused a rise in the number of cases requiring hospitalization. With a field hospital previously opened in central Massachusetts during the Spring of 2020, the governor decided to reimplement the field hospital. Although operations were effectively accomplished during the first wave, the reimplementation of the field hospital came with its new set of challenges for operating a satellite pharmacy. Experiences gathered include new pharmacy operation workflows, the clinical role of pharmacy services, introduction of remdesivir treatment, and pharmacy involvement in newly diagnosed diabetes patients requiring insulin teaching. Pharmacy services were successful in adapting to the rapidly growing number in patients with a total of over 600 patients served in a course of 2 months.

The COVID-19 pandemic, which originated from Wuhan, China, has rapidly spread worldwide, including India. As India grappled with the second wave, COVID-triggered fungal infection has suddenly risen tremendously, raising a sense of panic in the country. The fungal infection in COVID-19 includes Mucormycosis and Aspergillosis, as common fungal infections primarily affecting rhino-orbital structures. Many research papers have published postmortem findings in autopsies conducted on COVID-19 decedents, thereby helping to understand this contagious disease's pathogenesis. But, with the arrival of COVID-triggered fungal infection, which is a crucial invasive disease responsible for fatality, very few research papers have commented on the postmortem findings of invasive fungal infections affecting the rhino-orbital and craniocerebral structures in COVID-19 deaths. Therefore, the role of invasive fungal infection due to COVID-19 illness must be established in the causation of deaths in COVID-19 patients. This review research deals with autopsy dissection techniques and possible postmortem findings of invasive fungal infections involving the nasal and paranasal sinuses and orbital structures in COVID-19 deaths. The findings of fungal infection affecting nasal and paranasal systems may not differ in live patients and in a deceased; however, it is essential that correct interpretation of the postmortem findings aided by pre-or post-autopsy investigations is necessary to establish the role of covid triggered fungal infection in such deaths.

Anemia of inflammation, also known as anemia of chronic disease is the second most common anemia after iron deficiency anemia. The predominant regulators of AI are the cytokine-interleukin-6 (IL6) and the hormone hepcidin (Hamp). IL6 has been implicated in inducing expression of hepcidin. Published data from our lab have shown that lack of IL6 or hepcidin in knockout mouse models (IL6-KO and Hamp-KO) injected with the heat-killed pathogen Brucella abortus(BA) results in recovery from anemia but interestingly the pattern of the recovery was different in IL6-KO and Hamp-KO mice, suggesting that the two proteins contribute independently to AI. Here, we validated the independent role of IL6 and Hamp in AI by generating a double-knockout (DKO) mouse model lacking the expression of both. In the first few days following BA administration, we observed severe reduction in the total number of BM cells in each model followed by a slow recovery in erythroid and multilineage hematopoietic cells. The recovery, initially, was more sustained in the BA-treated-DKO model. In particular, in the first week, BA-treated-DKO mice showed an increased number of erythroblasts in the bone marrow (BM) and spleen as seen in comparison to IL6-KO and Hamp-KO. IL6-KO mice showed an intermediate recovery profile when compared to DKO and Hamp-KO, the last one showing the worst profile in the BM. Interestingly, when the reticulocyte count in the DKO mice was compared to that of IL6-KO and Hamp-KO mice, it showed a biphasic trend, with a significant increase in number during the 2nd week, followed by a significant reduction during the 3rd week. We hypothesized that the initial surge in reticulocyte count in DKO was due to lack of hepcidin, which increases iron availability to erythroid cells, and concurrent lack of IL6, which favors BM erythropoiesis in presence of inflammatory stimuli. However, we also speculated that the excess of iron (as NTBI), which accumulates during the first two weeks, leads to oxidative stress and erythroid cell death in presence of inflammatory cytokines, despite the absence of IL6. We also surmised that, during the second week, a second wave of inflammatory cytokines is triggered by the adaptive response in response to the BA that would explain the negative effect on erythropoiesis after the initial recovery. To assess this hypothesis, we utilized an inflammation panel to analyze the cytokine expression in WT animals treated with PBS or BA at 6 hours, 24 hours and then around ~2 weeks. The cytokine levels were normalized after 24 hours. However, around two weeks, we observed a novel surge of cytokines such as IFN-g and TNFa in the BA treated mice, indicating their role in innate (immediate effect; 6 hours) and adaptive immune response, which activated a second wave of inflammation (around 2 weeks, during the recovery of hematopoiesis in the BM). Interestingly, while we observed oxidative stress and defective erythropoiesis in the bone marrow, this was not seen in the spleen, where increased and extramedullary erythropoiesis sustained some level of RBC production. Since the BA-treated-IL6-KO did not show any major defect in the BM after two weeks, we challenged them with administration of iron dextran. Upon treatment, also the IL6-KO mice treated with both BA and iron dextran shown increased production of reactive oxygen species as well as a defect in bone marrow erythropoiesis, similarly as in DKO or Hamp-KO mice, thereby explaining the plausible reason of reduced erythropoiesis in the bone-marrow. Furthermore, to identify mechanisms leading to oxidative stress, we established an in-vitro culture system where primary murine bone marrow cells were cultured for 18-20 hours in presence of serum isolated after 6hrs from either PBS treated or BA treated C57BL/6 mice. With the help of confocal microscopy, we observed an increase in mitochondrial superoxide in the cells treated with BA serum; interestingly we have also seen a decrease in Ter 119 population in the cells cultured with BA treated serum implicating that the erythroid cells are dying. To further investigate the downstream players related to the death of erythroid progenitors we are currently investigating the role caspase 1 (a major regulator in pyroptosis) and Gata-1. In conclusion, this study is elucidating some of the mechanisms associated with the anemia triggered by inflammation with the potential to identify new targets and treatments. Objectives: To analyze the role of pharmacists during the COVID-19 pandemic, to measure pharmacists’ attitude toward COVID-19 safety measures (wearing masks, wearing gloves, isolation shield, good hygiene, etc.), and explore their perspectives regarding a second wave of the virus. Methods: This cross-sectional online survey study was conducted in Jordan during the COVID-19 outbreak in July 2020 to discuss Jordanian pharmacists’ awareness of safety at their workplace during the COVID-19 outbreak, their sources of information, and their predictions for COVID-19 vaccination. Results: The participants (n = 311) were all pharmacists mostly aged between 23–30 years old (45%) and female (83%). The primary source of information about COVID-19 was social networking (38.9%). Pharmacists were committed to social distancing (86.5%) and wearing masks (76.2%). They expressed levels of agreement to their role in decreasing COVID-19 spread (94.2%) and correcting false information (94.5%); they expressed levels of expectation toward concern about a second COVID-19 wave (83%) that would be more severe than the previous one (43.4%). Pharmacists expected that an influenza vaccine might be helpful in decreasing severity and spread of the COVID-19 pandemic (56.9%). Pharmacists expected COVID-19 vaccine development within 6 months of administering our study survey (84.9%) and that vaccination might be effective in preventing COVID-19 (93%) infection. Conclusion: Pharmacists expressed positive roles on COVID-19 spread through exemplary actions, self-commitment to protection measures, and public health awareness. Social media as a source of health information should be cautiously investigated, and pharmacists should always refer to evidence-based sources. The role of pharmacists is particularly important for the upcoming era of COVID-19 vaccination administration and awareness.

Today, like never before, we are witnessing a pervasive diffusion of ultra-broadband fixed-mobile connectivity, the deployment of Cloud-native 5G network and service platforms, and the wide adoption of Artificial Intelligence. It has the so-called Digital Transformation of our Society: as a matter of fact, the transformative role of Telecommunications and Information Communication Technologies (ICT) has long been witnessed as a precursor of scientific progress and economic growth in the modern world. Nevertheless, this transformation is still laying its foundations on Electronics and the impending end of Moore’s Law: therefore, a rethinking of the long-term ways of doing computation and communications has been already started. Among these different ways, quantum technologies might trigger the next innovation breakthrough in the medium long-term. In this direction, the paper provides an overview of the state of the art, challenges, and opportunities posed by an expected second wave of quantum technologies and services.

Currently we are at the peak of the second wave of pandemic.  Availability of beds & oxygen is at nadir. The patients coming to us for surgery are the ones where surgery cannot wait. Mainly the load is obstetric. As a matter of COVID pandemic policy we are using regional anaesthesia unless contraindicated or the surgery demands general anaesthesia. The aim is to avoid/reduce aerosolization which is part & parcel of GA, despite the efforts to minimise it. The policy is to protect the anaesthesiologists, surgeons, OT staff & other patients as well. The present manuscript is to review the role of regional anaesthesia & its safe performance.

The population's adhesion to measures to ensure social distancing represents a great management challenge. Evidence has shown that social distancing is effective. However, it is challenging to separate government measures from social distancing driven by personal initiatives. Theory: It is possible that the output of protective behaviors, such as adherence to protective measures and staying in social isolation, is influenced by individual characteristics, such as personality traits or symptoms of mental distress of anxiogenic nature. We hypothesized that individuals with more expressive symptoms of fear or anxiety would have a more protective behavioral tendency in terms of risk exposure, leaving less home during the pandemic. In contrast, individuals with greater emotional stability, as they feel more secure and with a lower perception of risk, could go out more often.Material and Methods: A total of 2709 individuals from all regions of Brazil participated in the study (mean age = 42 years; 2134 women). Correlation analysis was performed to investigate the relationships between personality traits according to the big five model and Psychopathological Symptoms (BSI). Then investigate how people that go out usually differ from people that stay at home, in both symptoms and personality traits. Finally, to investigate the predictors for going out usually, we use multiple regression analysis, using gender, marital status, level of education, and personality traits. Results: During the second wave of COVID-19 in Brazil, individuals with higher emotional stability tended to leave home more than those with more expressive levels of anxiogenic dysregulation. These results reinforce the role of both personality traits and psychopathological symptoms in prophylactic behavior during COVID-19 pandemics.
