The global outbreak of coronavirus is conclusively attributed to the direct contacts and social interactions of individuals with one another. Because of the fatal nature of the virus and man being the major host for the virus, scientists have embarked upon/ intimidated people to practice social distancing so that the further spreading of the virus may be stopped. Such social distancing, including self-isolation, restriction of movement, lockdown, and quarantine has brought enormous social disruption in the lives of people. This paper aims to explore the social, psychological, and economic impacts of social distancing on the lives of the inhabitants in a quarantined village Ziarat Talash in District Dir Lower, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province of Pakistan. For this purpose, 08 potential respondents in the mentioned village were purposively selected and their views were taken through in-depth interviewing. The collected data was analysed and the interviews were clubbed into three major themes including social, psychological, and economic impacts of self-isolation and quarantined life in the targeted locale of the study. It is concluded that self-isolation and social distancing through quarantine has seriously disrupted the social, economic, and psychological aspects of the inhabitants in the area.

This Study entitled as “Livelihood Pattern of the Tibetan Refugees in Nepal” (A Case Study of the Samdupling in Jawalakhel and Khampa Refugee Camp in Boudha- Jorpati) aims to discover the livelihood patterns of Tibetan refugees residing in the Samdupling camp in Jawalakhel and Khampa Refugee’s Camp in Boudha-Jorpati. The paper intends to examine the problems confronted by Tibetan refugees residing in the Samdupling camp and Khampa Refugee’s Camp. The study itself is conducted with the objectives of describing the present socio-economic status of Tibetan refugees dwelling in aforementioned camps located inside the Kathmandu valley and Lalitpur. This write-up not only deals with different livelihood aspects of Tibetan refugees but also compares the livelihood of two camps to list out the social, economic and political problems affecting their livelihood. However, this study is mainly based on the primary information and the data which were collected using the techniques of household survey and sampling survey, along with questionnaire and interview during the several field visits to camps. The paper concludes by stating that government intervention is required to resolve the issues affecting the livelihood of Tibetan refugees. Tibetan refugees’ problems required a political yet humanitarian resolution. The government needs to decide on whether to endow the citizenship or refugee card to the refugees who have been deprived of the both, or opt for the third-party settlement. For that Tibetans refugees also need to cooperate and coordinate with the refugees department under the Ministry of the Home Affair, Government of Nepal

The establishment of oil palm companies let impact on society.  The purpose of this study was to know the social and economic impact of  the establishment of oil palm company on the community. This research was conducted from May to July 2019 in Loleng Village, Kota Bangun District, Kutai Kartanegara District. Oil palm company exists in there namely PT. Prima Mitrajaya Mandiri.  Number of respondents was as many as 44 respondents divided into two parts, namely 22 respondents are residing close to the company and 22 respondents are living far away from the company. The method of data analysis that used was descriptive analysis. The research results showed that oil palm company let  positive impact on the community who live near to the company. The establishment of  company opens employment opportunities,  increases people's living standards, and opens business opportunities.   The company gives many help for community lives near the company such as financial assistance to orphans, school repair assistance, and road repair assistance. People who live far away from the company  did not have the positive impact.

Purpose This paper aims to describe the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on a prison-based therapeutic community (TC). Design/methodology/approach The paper takes the form of a case study where the authors reflect on their current practice, using the findings of research on social isolation and the overarching TC principles to explore the effect of the pandemic on the TC at HMP Grendon. The authors consider how the residents and staff adjusted to the change as the parameters changed when the social distancing rules were imposed and how they adapted to the prolonged break to therapy. Sections in the paper were written by a resident and an operational member of staff. The authors conclude with their thoughts on how to manage the consequences the lockdown has brought and start to think about what returning to “normality” might mean. Findings The paper describes the adjustments made by the residents and staff as the UK Government imposed the lockdown. The authors, including a resident and an operational member of staff comment on the psychological and practical impact these adjustments had. The thought is given to the idea of “recovery”, returning to “normality” and how this study can be best managed once restrictions are lifted. Research limitations/implications At the time of writing, there are no confirmed cases of COVID-19 at HMP Grendon. The measures and commitment from all staff and residents in the prison to keep the prison environment safe may in part account for this. This paper explores the effects of lockdown on the emotional environment in a TC and highlights the consequences that social isolation can have on any individual. To the authors’ knowledge, there is currently no research undertaken on the impact of lockdown/social isolation on a TC. This research would be useful, as the authors postulate from reflections on current practice that the effects of the lockdown will be greater in a social therapy environment. Originality/value HMP Grendon started in 1962, as this time there have been no significant events that have meant the suspension of therapy for such a sustained period. It is, therefore, important that the impact of such is considered and reflected upon.

Purpose This paper aims to highlight the contribution of ecological fairs to the promotion of sustainability in university campuses, based on a case study carried out at the University of Passo Fundo, located in Southern Brazil. Design/methodology/approach Producers and consumers of the ecological fairs were interviewed to analyse how the social, economic and environmental spheres of sustainable development are impacted by these fairs. In total, 24 interviews were conducted. Findings The results showed how fairs positively impact the academic and local community while bringing sustainability into university campuses. Research limitations/implications The main limitations of this study were the number of interviews and the short period during when the study was conducted. Practical implications This case study demonstrated how the promotion of ecological fairs on a university campus plays an important role in the implementation and practice of sustainability and can serve as an example for other institutions that intend to work on similar projects. Originality/value This paper contributes to the literature by providing a discussion on how ecological fairs represent a good addition in the process of universities to become more sustainable and which aspects of each sustainability sphere are involved.

ABSTRACTThe article begins by exploring briefly the role of the elderly in sociolinguistic theory and research. After an outline of the parameters of speech accommodation theory together with a new schematic model, it is argued that speech accommodation theory is a profitable framework for elucidating the sociolinguistic mechanics of, and the social psychological processes underlying, intergenerational encounters. A recent conceptual foray in this direction, which highlights young-to-elderly language strategies, is then overviewed with some illustrations. Contrastive data from a case study are then introduced, a discourse analysis of which allows us to conceptualize various elderly-to-young language strategies. This interpretive analysis suggests important avenues for extending speech accommodation theory itself. A revised, more sociolinguistically elaborated version of this framework is then presented which highlights strategies beyond those of convergence, maintenance, and divergence and leads to the conceptualization of over- and underaccommodation. Finally, and on the basis of the foregoing, a new model of intergenerational communication is proposed and Ryan et al.'s (1986) “communicative predicament” framework duly revised. <p>This thesis presents the findings of a project that explored the ways in which primary school children developed understandings about mathematics, mathematical 'learning' and 'knowing' and themselves as learners of mathematics. The research aimed to describe the children's mathematical learning environments, to explore the ways in which children made meaning about mathematics through social interactions within these environments, and to identify elements of these environments that appeared to enhance or inhibit the children's learning of mathematics. Located within the body of literature that takes a sociocultural view of teaching and learning, the study adopted the theoretical framework of symbolic interactionism because of its usefulness in explaining how, through the social interactions of everyday life, an individual constructs and reconstructs personal versions of 'reality', including a sense of identity. Through this lens, familiar objects, routine events and everyday language surrounding the teaching and learning of mathematics were examined for their significance to young learners. The concept of the sociomathematical world was created and developed to describe the mathematical environment of the child as positioned within wider social networks. The sociomathematical world of the child was seen as the world of everyday life, the arena in which the child, through regular and routine interactions with others, negotiated meanings about, and made personal sense of, mathematics. The research focussed on ten case study children - four girls and six boys - all attending different schools, and selected randomly from the primary schools in the Wellington region of New Zealand. For three years, from the beginning of their third year at school to the end of their fifth, the children were regularly interviewed and observed in their classrooms. Other key participants in their sociomathematical worlds were also interviewed, including families, teachers, principals, and classmates. Evidence of teaching and learning was also gathered from children's books and assessment records, and linked to local and global curriculum documentation. A cumulative picture was compiled of the mathematical teaching and learning environments of these ten children. Originally intended to be presented as separate biographies, the data were instead collated and reported according to the four distinctive recurring themes that emerged from the findings: the emphasis of speed in mathematics teaching and learning; identification and differentiation based on socially constructed perceptions of mathematical 'ability'; the establishment of 'doing maths' as solo written work; the presentation of mathematics as consisting of 'correct' and non-negotiable facts and procedures. These dominant approaches to teaching and learning of mathematics were found to conform to deeply entrenched traditions, in which the learner was viewed as the passive recipient of, rather than an active participant in, education in general and mathematics education in particular. It was found that these taken-for-granted pedagogical cultures were not explicitly supported by the official curriculum. Marked negative effects of these common teaching practices were commonly observed: alienation, marginalisation and impoverished learning. These impacts were experienced in varying forms and at varying times, by all the case study children, suggesting that changed views of mathematics and of mathematical teaching and learning are needed if the learning potential of all children is to be fully realised.</p>

It is relatively easy to stop conflict but difficult to achieve peace. Peace or peacebuilding is not merely to abate conflict rather it is an activity that aims to resolve the practices of injustice in peaceful ways and transform the socio-economic and structural conditions that cause conflicts. Societies in post conflict transitions pose the challenges of uncertainty and insecurity that are if not addressed properly with a holistic, and durable peacebuilding strategy can revert to violence and conflict. Most of these challenges are the result of social and economic imbalances that are deeply embedded in the societal structure and cultural setup which do not allow peacebuilding to be sustainable. This paper as part of PhD study aimed to investigate the factors as hurdles affecting peacebuilding in conflict affected areas of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province of Pakistan in general and specifically district Swat. In this study, qualitative research methods especially grounded theory approach and theoretical sampling are used for identification of research participants, and the data is also collected through interviews and analysis. This study aims to find the social and economic hurdles that affect peacebuilding in the conflict affected areas of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa in general and specifically district Swat. The study shows that peacebuilding activities are suffered in target areas because of delay in justice, inadequate access of pubic to social services, trust deficit, and incompatibility of peacebuilding to local culture. The provision of social services to people and making national institutions trustworthy can build durable peace in the society.

Abstract Healthcare practitioners struggle to adapt to the changes that new digital media entail for social interactions, but what does the struggle look like, and how is it embedded in these professionals’ everyday experiences? I investigate these questions in this study of how digitalisation conditions social interactions in the context of the Danish medical setting by drawing on ethnographic work. Moreover, via a video-recorded case study, this article shows how two practitioners organise social actions by exploiting features of a digital communication system in a situation where they manage a practical problem. I propose the concept of hybrid presence related to the scientific fields of dialogism and distributed cognition as an explanation of how the participants are capable of immersing themselves with both the digital technology and the social interaction. Hybrid presence thus proves useful in the discussion of how practitioners may struggle with technology.
