The microbial activity can serve as an indicator of the general state of the soil, since it is the reflection of optimal physical and chemical conditions for the development of the metabolic processes of microorganisms that act on the soil, which is why it constitutes an indicator of the dynamics and resource health. With the objective to evaluate the soil quality through microbial activity in banana plantations at the south of Lake Maracaibo, a study was carried out in different production units located in the municipality of Colón of the Zulia state. Lots of banana plants of high and low vigor (AV and BV), for this purpose composite samples the soil at 0-20 cm depth were taken. It was determined: microbial carbon, soil basal respiration, and microbial and metabolic quotient. The results showed that vigor parameters: number of hands per bunch; pseudostem circumference and height of the succession child were significantly higher in VA than in BV, while for microbial carbon, basal soil respiration, and microbial and metabolic ratios, no statistically significant differences were found between vigor lots. The high microbial activity was closely related to the soil texture and, in turn, this positively influenced the biometric parameters of the plants.

The objective of this study was to investigate the possibility of using jellyfish (Lobonema smithii) for the production of nutritionally improved crackers. In this study, ground jellyfish were incorporated into different levels (20, 30, and 40%) to replace wheat flour in cracker formula. Physicochemical characteristics (linear expansion, hardness, and color) and sensory quality of the developed crackers were examined and compared with control crackers. The crackers with jellyfish were found significantly darker, with more brittleness, and less consumer accepted than the control samples (p < 0.05). Moisture content, aw, and thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS)-values of jellyfish crackers increased while the hardness of the jellyfish crackers decreased with increasing the storage time for both crackers stored at 35 and 45°C. The substitution of wheat flour with jellyfish led to high protein content in the crackers. The cracker with 30% of jellyfish gained characteristics of cracker, liking scores, as well as the subjective quality of the final product and had good physical and chemical conditions, being able to be consumed for 12 weeks stored at 35°C.

The aims of this paper were to describe seasonal changes in the qualitative and quantitative composition of diatom taxa and the potential application of benthic diatoms for ecological status evaluation. Diatom indices (IPS and TI) were calculated from data from three different locations along a longitudinal profile of the Bunica, a small karstic river in Bosnia and Herzegovina. A total of 147 taxa were recorded in 12 samples. The most common taxa were Meridion circulare (Greville) C.Agardh and Ulnaria ulna (Nitzsch) Compère. Physical and chemical analyses showed low concentrations of nutrients, good oxygenation, typical pH for carbonate bed/origin and generally oligotrophic conditions and high ecological status. All sites had similar physico-chemical conditions and there were only few seasonal differences. Ordination of the diatom data showed that samples showed neither longitudinal nor seasonal patterns. Median value for IPS (16.8) and for TI (7.3) can be possible ‘‘expected’’ values for ecological status assessment for small karstic rivers in the Mediterranean region. We propose the use of the phytobenthos Intercalibration Common Metric (pICM - an index that combines the IPS and TI) as a national metric for countries developing WFD diatom methods at a late stage. One situation is described, and a solution, which is potentially transferable to other locations in Bosnia and Herzegovina and also to other countries facing similar challenges.

Modern strategies for conserving forage in tropical bovine production systems

Colombian bovine production systems basically employ grazing on pasture forages since as this is an economic system involving little manual labour. However, dependence on pasture for grazing carries with it the disadvantages of the effects of climatic variation and a particular soil's physical and chemical conditions. Significant reductions in the availability and quality of forage thus occur during the dry season an effect known as the 'seasonal nature of fodder', leading to reducing animal load production levels and animal growth rates. Conversely, there is a surplus of forage during the rainy season which is not preserved or is offered in an advanced state of maturity; this also affects its nutritional quality and therefore productivity. Some progress has been made in the practice of conserving forage; however, such processes must be intensified and altematives developed using drought-resistant materials, thereby counteracting the seasonal effects determined by climatic variation. Current strategies and/or technologies must thus be reviewed as they have a direct effect on the process and/or type of fermentation leading to maintaining and/or improving product quality or ensuring that it is preserved for ensuring high levels of consurnption and animal productivity.

The purpose of the research is to identify effi cient microfertilizers and growth stimulants considering biologi- cal features of new corn hybrids of different FAO groups under irrigation conditions in the South of Ukraine and trace their impact on grain productivity of the plants. The methods of the research are the fi eld method – to study the interaction of the research object with experimental factors of the natural environment, to register the yield and evaluate the biometrical indices; the laboratory method – to measure soil moisture, grain moisture content and grain quality indices; the statistical method – to evaluate the reliability of the obtained results; the calculation methods – for economic and energetic assessment of the growing techniques used. The results of the research. The paper defi nes the impact of microfertilizers and growth stimulants on the yield and grain quality of the corn hybrids of different maturity groups and on the economic effi ciency of growing them. The conclusions of the research. Under irrigation conditions of the Southern Steppe of Ukraine it is recommended that the following hybrids should be grown in dark-chestnut soils: early maturity DN Pyvykha, medium-early Skadovskyi, medium maturity Kakhovskyi and medium-late Arabat, using the growth stimulants – treating the seeds with Sezam-Nano and fertilizing with Grainactive at the stage of 7–8 leaves.

This paper deals with the results of sociological survey focused on identification of the attitudes of elderly people to further education. The research was carried out in September 2010. Experience of elderly people with further education, their readiness (determination) for further education as well as their motivation and barriers in further education were also subjects of this research. Detecting elderly population’s awareness of universities of the third age and finding out their further education preferences were an integral part of the research. Research sample consisted of citizens over 55 years living in the South Moravian region. The survey results are structured by socio-demographic features e.g.: age, sex, educational attainment etc. and provide an interesting insight into the attitudes of the target group to one of the activities that contributes to improvement of their quality of life.

This study reports measurements of albumin permeability in isolated coronary venules. The isolated microvessel technique allows the quantification of transmural exchange of macromolecules under tightly controlled physical and chemical conditions. Transvenular exchange of albumin was studied in isolated coronary venules during alterations in filtration rate caused by changes in intravascular pressure. The apparent permeability coefficient of albumin (Pa) at an intraluminal pressure of 11 cmH2O was 3.92 +/- 0.43 x 10(-6) cm/s. Elevating intraluminal pressure to 16 and 21 cmH2O increased Pa to 5.13 +/- 0.57 x 10(-6) and 6.78 +/- 0.66 x 10(-6) cm/s, respectively. Calculation of the true diffusive permeability coefficient of albumin (Pd) at zero filtration rate was 1.54 x 10(-6) cm/s. The product of hydraulic conductance (Lp) and (1 - sigma), where sigma is the solute reflection coefficient, was 3.25 x 10(-7) cm.s-1 x cmH2O-1. At a net filtration pressure of 4-5 cmH2O, diffusion accounts for > 60% of total albumin transport across the venular wall. Transmural albumin flux is very sensitive to filtration rate, rising 6.7% for each cmH2O elevation of net filtration pressure. At 11 cmH2O net filtration pressure, convection accounts for nearly 70% of net albumin extravasation from the venular lumen. We suggest that the isolated coronary venule is a suitable preparation for the study of solute exchange in the heart.

Near-surface wind data are particularly important for Hainan Island and the South China Sea, and there is a wide range of wind data sources. A detailed understanding of the reliability of these datasets can help us to carry out related research. In this study, the hourly near-surface wind data from the High-Resolution China Meteorological Administration (CMA) Land Data Assimilation System (HRCLDAS) and the fifth-generation ECMWF atmospheric reanalysis data (ERA5) were evaluated by comparison with the ground automatic meteorological observation data for Hainan Island and the South China Sea. The results are as follows: (1) the HRCLDAS and ERA5 near-surface wind data trend was basically the same as the observation data trend, but there was a smaller bias, smaller root-mean-square errors, and higher correlation coefficients between the near-surface wind data from HRCLDAS and the observations; (2) the quality of HRCLDAS and ERA5 near-surface wind data was better over the islands of the South China Sea than over Hainan Island land. However, over the coastal areas of Hainan Island and island stations near Sansha, the quality of the HRCLDAS near-surface wind data was better than that of ERA5; (3) the quality of HRCLDAS near-surface wind data was better than that of ERA5 over different types of landforms. The deviation of ERA5 and HRCLDAS wind speed was the largest along the coast, and the quality of the ERA5 wind direction data was poorest over the mountains, whereas that of HRCLDAS was poorest over hilly areas; (4) the accuracy of HRCLDAS at all wind levels was higher than that of ERA5. ERA5 significantly overestimated low-grade winds and underestimated high-grade winds. The accuracy of HRCLDAS wind ratings over the islands of the South China Sea was significantly higher than that over Hainan Island land, especially for the higher wind ratings; and (5) in the typhoon process, the simulation of wind by HRCLDAS was closer to the observations, and its simulation of higher wind speeds was more accurate than the ERA5 simulations.
