The antibacterial activity, phytochemical constituents and the radical scavenging ability using FRAP and DPPH of Piliostigma reticulatum were investigated in this study. Of all the solvent extracts used to assay the antibacterial effect, ethanol extract had the highest activity, followed by the aqueous extract with very weak activity against Pseudomonsa aeruginosa, Salmonella typhi and E. coli, methanol extract had no visible effect on the test organisms while ethyl acetate was active against only E. coli. The presence of phytochemicals such as alkaloids, glycosides, steroids, anthraquinones, phenol, tanin and saponin was observed. Antinutrients such as Tanin, Phenol, Phylate, Oxalate, Saponin and Flavonoids in copious amount. Ethanol extract of P. reticulatum was found to have the highest antioxidant ability, followed by the methanol extract. Ehtyl acetate extract had minimal radical scavenging ability. The antibacterial effect, phytochemical content and the radical scavenging properties of the plant makes it a good candidate in the development of antimicrobial therapeutics.

Objective: This study was designed to determine the Total phenol, flavonoid content, antioxidant and free radical scavenging properties of different solvent extracts of Piper umbellatum.  Methods: Different solvent extracts evaluated with DPPH radical scavenging activity and Reducing power activity.Results: The presence of phenol and flavonoid showed highly in the methanol extracts than ethyl acetate and acetone extracts. All the extracts have various level of antioxidant activity. Methanol solvent extract have good extraction and show significant antioxidant activity. The effect of reducing power of methanol extract revealed good antioxidant activity compare with other tested extracts.Conclusion: On the basis of the above results we concluded that methanol extract of Piper umbellatum whole plant extracts shows significant antioxidant activity than ethyl acetate and acetone extracts.Keywords: Piper umbellatum, Antioxidant, DPPH, FRAP assay, Polar, Non polar solvents

This study was undertaken to estimate the antioxidant activity and total tannin content of Moringa olifera Lam. (Moringa) leaves and find a suitable extraction condition for maximum yield. Two types of solvent and three different extraction times and temperatures were experimented for extraction. Moringa leaves were oven-dried and powdered to determine the antioxidant activity in terms of total phenolic content (TPC), ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP), and DPPH radical scavenging activity and total tannin content. The maximum TPC value noted in methanol extract, and it ranges from 6.46 ± 0.34 g to 3.91±0.19 g gallic acid equivalent (GAE)/100g dry sample (DM). The FRAP values varied from 211.6 ± 3.75 to 344.13 ± 3.26 mg ascorbic acid equivalent (AAE)/100g DM and 166.67 ± 2.90 to 224.93 ± 1.94 mg AAE/100g DM, for methanol and ethanol extract, respectively. The DPPH radical scavenging activity ranged from 46.32 ± 1.07 to 58.09 ± 0.92% for methanol extract and 56.76 ± 1.48% to 69.72 ± 1.15% for ethanol extract. The total tannin content varied from 6.84 ± 0.05 to 10.22 ± 1.11 mg GAE/100 g dry sample and 6.77 ± 0.08 to 9.23 ± 0.51 mg GAE/ 100g DMfor methanol and ethanol extract, respectively. The highest antioxidant yield for methanol and ethanol extract of Moringa leaves differed for various conditions. Overall, Moringa leaves showed excellent antioxidant properties that can be commercially and domestically used.

The leaves of Aerva lanata are one of the indigenous medicinal plants used in the management of diabetes mellitus and its associated complications in Africa. However, its effect on the activities of diabetes-related enzymes has not been investigated. This study evaluated the in vitro inhibitory effects of different extracts of the A. lanata leaf on the activities of diabetes-related enzymes (α-amylase and α-glucosidase) and chemically induced free radicals. Aqueous, ethanol, and hydroethanol extracts of A. lanata leaves were subjected to a standard enzyme inhibition assay followed by determination of modes of inhibition of the enzymes. The antioxidant activities of the extracts were evaluated using 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and 2,2-azino-bis-(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulphonic acid) (ABTS). The results obtained showed that the hydroethanol extract of the A. lanata leaf optimally inhibited both α-amylase (IC50: 2.42 mg/mL) and α-glucosidase (IC50: 0.23 mg/mL). The Lineweaver-Burk plot revealed that the mode of inhibition of both enzymes by the hydroethanol extract was uncompetitive. However, the hydroethanol and aqueous extracts displayed the best DPPH and ABTS radical-scavenging ability, respectively. It can be concluded that the A. lanata extract inhibited the activities of both α-amylase and α-glucosidase uncompetitively, which may be attributed to its free radical-scavenging properties and rich phenolic composition.

Objective: The systematic study of effective alternative anti-diabetic drugs has great importance to manage diabetes as well as other oxidative stress-related diseases. According to previous research, root and bark of Mussaenda macrophylla plant has anti-microbial, anti-coagulant, anti-inflammatory, and hepatoprotective activity. Ethnomedicinal data shows that Mussaenda macrophylla is used to treat diabetes as well as oxidative stress. The objective of this research is to investigate in vitro anti-diabetic and anti-oxidant activity of root extract of Mussaenda macrophylla. Methods: DPPH free radical scavenging assay was used to detect anti-oxidant potency of ethanol and methanol root extract of the plant and expressed as % of radicle inhibition. Anti-diabetic activity was determined by the glucose diffusion method using a glucose oxidase kit and results were expressed as mean±SD. Results: The ethanol root extract at the concentration of 50 mg/ml and 100 mg/ml showed better glucose diffusion inhibition than that of methanol extract at the same concentration on increasing time interval. Ethanol extract at the concentration 100 µg/ml displayed better DPPH scavenging activity (89.83±0.19 %) than that of methanol extract (86.61±0.75%). Conclusion: This study concluded that ethanol and methanol root extract of Mussenda macrophylla have potent anti-diabetic as well as anti-oxidant activity but further advance research is necessary in the animal model.

The antibacterial activity of three Cupressaceae plants (Thujaoccidentalis,ThujaorientalisandChamaecyparisobtusa) was tested against three bacteria using the agar diffusion method. The ether and ethylacetate fraction of crude methanol extract from the three plants showed potent antibacterial activity against the tested microorganisms. The result showed that Staphylococcus aureus revealed the most sensitivity among the tested bacteria. Thujaoccidentalisether fraction and Thujaorientalis hexane fraction exhibited the highest antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus. E. coli was shown the highest MIC values compared to the other two tested bacteria, which indicates the lowest antibacterial activity against the bacterium. This study promises an interesting future for designing a potentially active antibacterial agent from the three Cupressaceae plants.

This study was designed to examine the in vitro antioxidant DPPH free radical-scavenging activity, and the total phenolic and flavonoid content of ethanol and methanol extracts of Salvia amplexicaulis Lam. in the whole plant and different parts, leaves, stems and flowers. The largest amounts of extract yield were obtained from the flowers, 14.14% and 12.00 % (w/w) in the ethanol of methanol extracts, respectively. The ethanol extract of leaves (16.07 ?g/ml) and methanol extract of the whole plant (21.28 ?g/ml) showed the highest activity against the DPPH radical. The ethanol extract of the leaves was the richest in phenols (222.40 mg GAE/g) and flavonoids (49.81 mg QE/g), whereas the methanol extract of the whole plant contained the highest amount of phenolics (180.89 mg GAE/g) and flavonoids (38.15 mg QE/g). A very strong linear correlation between antioxidant activity and the phenolic content of the extracts was established. The obtained results suggest that S. amplexicaulis could be regarded as an important source of natural antioxidants.

Diarrhea and typhoid fever are diseases commonly suffered by people in Indonesia, and bacteria such as Escherichia coli (diarrhea) and Salmonella typhi (typhoid fever) are one of those diseases causative agents. Various plants are potentially used as anti-bacterial including ulin (Eusideroxylon zwageri). The aims of this study were to analysis the yield and potential secondary metabolite content in ethanol extract of E. zwageri, and determine the optimal concentration in inhibits the growth of bacteria E. coli and S. typhi. The methods used in this study were measure the moisture content of E. zwageri wood bark powder, extraction with ethanol solvent, measure the yield percentage, qualitative of phytochemical analysis, and antibacterial assays. The results showed that the yield of ethanol extract of E. zwageri is 21,63% with 7,6% of moisture content. The extract positively contained alkaloids, flavonoids, tannins, saponins, phenolics and terpenoids. The optimum concentration in inhibits the growth of bacteria E. coli is 200 mg/ml and categorized as very strong inhibition response, and 15 mg/ml is concentration used in inhibits the S. typhi and categorized as strong inhibition response.Keywords: Antibacterial activity, Escherichia coli, Eusideroxylon zwageri, phytochemical screening, Salmonella typhi.

ABSTRACTDayak onions (Eleutherine americana Merr) has been used as a traditional plant which has  benefits  for  many  diseases,  one  of  them  is  antibacterial. This study aims to determine the growth inhibition of ethanol extract of Dayak onions leaves on the bacterium S. aureus, E. coli and  S. typhi using three concentrations of 20%, 40% and 60%. Extraction was done by maceration method using ethanol 96%. Antibacterial activity test was performing using the paper disk diffusion method (Kirby-Bauer diffusion). The results showed that ethanol extract of bawang dayak has the potential as an antibacterial and has antibacterial strength against S. aureus, E. coli and S. typhi. At concentrations of 20%, 40% and 60% forming inhibition zone diameters (16.23 mm, 19.18 mm, 21.25 mm) S. aureus, (10.7 mm, 13.98 mm, 15.87 mm) E. coli, and  (14.43 mm, 14.6 mm, 17.2 mm) S. typhi. At concentration of 20%, 40% and 60% included strong groups to inhibit E. coli and  S. typhi, while at concentration of 60%, it is included in a very strong group to inhibit the S. aureus bacteria. Keywords: Antibacterial activity, Bawang Dayak , Kirby-Bauer diffusion method   ABSTRAK Bawang Dayak (Eleutherine americana Merr) telah digunakan sebagai tanaman tradisional yang bermanfaat bagi banyak penyakit salah satunya sebagai antibakteri. Ekstraksi dilakukan dengan metode maserasi menggunakan etanol 96%. Pengujian aktivitas antibakteri dilakukan dengan  menggunkan metode difusi dengan cakram kertas (difusi Kirby-Bauer). Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa ekstrak etanol bawang dayak berpotensi sebagai antibakteri dan memiliki kekuatan antibakteri terhadap S. aureus, E. coli dan S. typhi. Pada konsentrasi 20%, 40% dan 60% membentuk diameter zona hambat (16.23 mm, 19.18 mm, 21.25 mm) pada S. aureus, (10.7 mm, 13.98 mm, 15,87 mm) pada E. coli, (14.43 mm, 14.6 mm, 17.2 mm) pada S. typhi. Pada konsentrasi 20%, 40% dan 60% termasuk golongan kuat untuk menghambat bakteri E. coli dan S. typhi, sedangkan pada konsentrasi 60% termasuk dalam golongan sangat kuat untuk menghambat bakteri S. aureus. Kata kunci: Aktivitas antibakteri, Bawang Dayak, metode difusi Kirby-Bauer

Ficus auriculata is a native Asian plant found in the temperate, tropical and subtropical regions and has been commonly used in traditional medicine and as fodder in animal husbandry. The comparative antibacterial and antioxidant efficacies of leaves and fruits have been studied using their hexane, chloroform, ethyl acetate and methanol extracts. Phytochemical screening exhibited the presence of important secondary metabolites like alkaloids, carbohydrates, glycosides, flavonoids and tannins. Antibacterial activities of fruit and leaf extracts in different concentrations were studied against E. coli, S. aureus and S. typhi by agar well diffusion method. The highest inhibition was found to be in 1% methanol extracts of leaves and fruits with a zone of inhibition (ZOI) ± 16 mm against S. aureus followed by E. coli and S. typhi with ZOI ±14 mm. The crude and 50% extracts of various solvents of both fruits and leaves were found to be ineffective against bacteria. These results reveal that there is a significant antibacterial activity in methanol extract of both fruit and leaves, against gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria. The antioxidant activities of methanol extracts of fruits and leaves were studied by DPPH radical scavenging assay. The IC50 values of methanol extract of leaves and fruit for DPPH radical scavenging assay were found to be 114.84 μg/mL and 78.28 μg/mL, respectively. These results reveal that methanol fruit extract exhibits better antioxidant activity as compared to the leaves. The result of this investigation has revealed the applicability of this plant as a potential source of several bioactive compounds for the discovery of new and efficacious drugs in days to come.

Lignin is a co-product from the biorefinery and paper industries. Its non-energetic valorisation remains a field of extensive research and development. In this perspective, this study was undertaken to evaluate the radical scavenging ability of selected herbaceous lignins. These lignins, extracted from either Miscanthus (Miscanthus × giganteus) or switchgrass (Panicum virgatum L.), were selected as benchmarks for this study based on their chemical structure and average molecular weight. These technical lignins, which are side-products in the bioethanol production process, displayed a moderate antioxidant activity as evaluated by the 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazil free radical scavenging test system. A correlation between the radical scavenging properties and the molecular features is proposed and discussed. Infrared spectroscopy was employed as a straightforward qualitative prediction tool for assessing the radical scavenging capacity.
