Purpose: The main objective of this study is to investigate the perceptions of pre-service teachers regarding their tutoring program at teacher college model in Mauritania. Approach/Methodology/Design: Explanatory Sequential design was adopted. Hence, a survey questionnaire and interviews were developed to gather data from 80 pre-service teachers, 20 in-service teachers, and 2 mentors. Findings: The findings of the study revealed that internship training has a significant impact on the development of pre-service teachers, but the teacher trainees did not get enough time for internship training sessions due to the workload of the theoretical courses.  Mentors and management support were found insignificant to the development of teacher college model trainees.  Practical Implications: The study provides a systematic evaluation of the current in-service teacher training programs. It reflects certain aspects of the status quo, and hence it will be useful for the concerned authorities in the field of teacher education. Originality/value: Teacher College Model has to adjust the levels of its tutoring where the study found that teacher trainees suffer the short-term practicum while they are complaining about the workload of coursework. Another way of the assessment regarding the tutoring program could be including observation. It is suggested that a qualitative study where researchers can spend more time at the teacher college model and with teaching staff observing the different aspects of the tutoring program.

The state and condition of Indonesian teachers have gradually changed to a better nuance due to the compensation of teacher certification program (TCP). The program has conceivably raised the status of the teachers in social and economic lives. However, the impact of the program on the improvement of overall teacher‘s quality—teaching performance as mandated by Teacher and Lecturer Law remains questionable, and the big question is what and how teachers perceive and act in response to the objective of the program. The program aims not only to increase the teachers‘ salary, but also to improve the quality of their teaching performance based on the teacher standard competence, that is pedagogical, personality, social, and professional competences. Therefore, the study explore and describe certified EFL teachers‘ perceptions concerning benefits of the program on thier social and economic lives, improvement and quality of their teaching practices; perceptions on the ways management ran the program; and expectations for better services of the TCP management.

Purpose The aim of this study is to analyse teachers’ perceptions of information and communication technologies (ICT) and the effect they have on their students, comparing male and female teachers in rural and urban areas of Mexico. Design/methodology/approach This is a quantitative study with a validated questionnaire that records the perception of school teachers from a state in the northeast of Mexico. The questionnaire was designed by interviewing 20 teachers who have had problematic situations in the use of technology by students. The main problems that were perceived in their students were cyberbullying, cyberviolence, online pornography, excessive use of videogames and also lack of ability to use digital technology. Hypothesis testing was applied to identify differences between gender (female or male) and region (rural or urban), considering these problems and the efforts made by the school to address these issues. Findings Both the gender of the teaching staff and the region where the school is located are variables that are influencing the willingness to incorporate ICT issues that are affecting the well-being of students into the educational agenda. While teachers are the main actors in preparing their students on how to face these challenges, students in schools with mostly male teachers, or located in rural areas, will be in a situation of greater vulnerability to be victims of the problems that arise as part of ICT risks in a digital society Research limitations/implications This article only offers a first approach to ICT and teachers’ perceptions. It is necessary to broaden the scope of this type of research to include different educational contexts and to ask questions that reveal in greater detail how schools are dealing with ICT and its possible risks and the factors that have influenced the successes or failures they are having in these attempts. Practical implications This finding can help schools to promote programs focused to apply ICT for student flourishment and help them to deal with the risk that digital technology is generating in young students. Originality/value Although multiple research have been conducted to address teachers’ perception about diverse topics, there has been no specific research on the self-perception of teachers in dealing with technology and preparing students for the problems presented by ICT and its risks. This research contributes to the literature on the impact that teachers’ perceptions can have on the adoption of technology in education, and how this can be different by gender and region.

Abstract When the operation benefit of an oil and gas pipeline is not enough to cover its operation cost, and the pipeline is no alternative use, seriously damaged, aged or the operation risk exceeds the acceptable range, it is bound to cause serious safety and environmental hazards along the pipeline, especially for the over age pipeline in service, therefore its scientific abandonment and reasonable disposal is particularly important and urgent. Focused on the methods for judging abandonment, retirement modes, cleaning and environmental management of oil and gas pipelines, the characteristics of existing methods for predicting the remaining life of the pipelines and their application in abandonment and disposal are compared and analyzed, and the basis and adaptability of oil and gas pipelines retirement are illuminated. According to the actual situation and environment of the discarded pipelines, the selection basis and applicable conditions of the pipeline and facility disposal methods such as demolition, in-situ shelving and their combination are expounded. It is found that North America has rich experience and mature technology in oil and gas pipeline abandonment and disposal, but many countries, including China, seriously lack scientific and systematic evaluation standards, practical experience, related theoretical and technical investigations. This study has important reference and practical significance for promoting the development of abandonment and disposal technology of an aging oil and gas pipeline, and ensuring the personal safety and ecological environmental protection along the abandoned pipeline. This paper presents the status quo of over age service and abandonment decision-making of oil and gas pipelines in the world, draws lessons from the experience of safety and environmental protection disposal of the global abandoned pipelines, and puts forward the principle and method of abandonment judgment and scientific disposal of the aging pipelines based on residual life evaluation. This method has sufficient basis, strong adaptability and wide application.

There has recently been an increase in English as a medium of instruction (EMI) in higher education (HE). The growth of EMI has led to a proliferation of descriptive research on teachers' linguistic competence, learners' and teachers' perceptions of and attitudes toward EMI, the methodology implemented in English as a medium of instruction, and the support and training provided to EMI teaching staff. However, to date, this rise in EMI has not been accompanied by a plethora of research on pedagogical and linguistic considerations. This chapter sheds light on some of these factors, with a focus on lecturers' teaching methodology. Focus group interviews and case study analyses were conducted involving EMI lecturers from a university in southern Spain. The data obtained in this study have been used to establish a pedagogical proposal for in-service EMI teacher training.

This study deals with the problem of outsourcing management, presenting a structure to support decision-making on effective information-technology outsourcing and highlighting the advantages and disadvantages that must be addressed. Since the study involves multiple variables, partially defined and conflicting objectives, and the will of decision-makers to broaden their understanding of the impact of decisions, the study used the multicriteria decision aid constructivist method to lead data collection and analysis. The chief results presented are: (i) a structured appraisal arranged by 8 strategic objectives and 107 performance indicators; (ii) the strengths and weaknesses of the status quo; and (iii) a process diagram for generating improvements. To ensure presentation of scientific and practical recognition in accordance with the constructivist path, the epistemological view adopted meets the scientific and practical requirements to ensure validity, legitimacy, and effectiveness of a model to support a decision-making process in a practical environment.

Abstract Alternative polyadenylation (APA) has been implicated to play an important role in post-transcriptional regulation by regulating mRNA abundance, stability, localization and translation, which contributes considerably to transcriptome diversity and gene expression regulation. RNA-seq has become a routine approach for transcriptome profiling, generating unprecedented data that could be used to identify and quantify APA site usage. A number of computational approaches for identifying APA sites and/or dynamic APA events from RNA-seq data have emerged in the literature, which provide valuable yet preliminary results that should be refined to yield credible guidelines for the scientific community. In this review, we provided a comprehensive overview of the status of currently available computational approaches. We also conducted objective benchmarking analysis using RNA-seq data sets from different species (human, mouse and Arabidopsis) and simulated data sets to present a systematic evaluation of 11 representative methods. Our benchmarking study showed that the overall performance of all tools investigated is moderate, reflecting that there is still lot of scope to improve the prediction of APA site or dynamic APA events from RNA-seq data. Particularly, prediction results from individual tools differ considerably, and only a limited number of predicted APA sites or genes are common among different tools. Accordingly, we attempted to give some advice on how to assess the reliability of the obtained results. We also proposed practical recommendations on the appropriate method applicable to diverse scenarios and discussed implications and future directions relevant to profiling APA from RNA-seq data.

11 Background: As numbers of cancer survivors increase, health-related quality of life and healthcare service utilization warrant closer attention, which requires routine valuations such as health utility scores (e.g. EQ5D-5L). EQ5D-5L implementation into routine clinical practice requires systematic evaluation to assess project scalability with goals of eventual roll-out across all 15 Ontario cancer centres in all disease sites. Methods: We used the Canadian Institutes of Health Research’s Knowledge-to-Action (KTA) framework as a guide to assess implementation of EQ5D-5L in two outpatient cancer populations; St. Michael’s Hospital’s general breast cancer clinic (GBR) and Princess Margaret Cancer Centre’s multidisciplinary brain metastases clinic (MBM), chosen to represent two very different organizational structures and patient populations. KTA steps from landscape assessment and engagement of stakeholders through to pilot implementation using paper surveys are reported. Results: After assessing 270 patients (GBR = 137; MBM = 117) across 57 days, implementation issues at the two sites were noted. GBR clinic’s larger and more general patient base was associated with a lower average socioeconomic status than MBM clinic, which targets a specialized patient population. More barriers to implementation at GBR were systemic and organizational in nature, whereas barriers at MBM were associated with patient management, where patients’ functional disabilities or neglect to return completed questionnaires hindered data collection. For both sites, successful EQ5D-5L implementation was contingent on senior management support and engagement of multiple stakeholders throughout the implementation process, leading to site-specific suggestions. Conclusions: Differing implementation strategies at both sites is reflective of target sites’ distinctive systemic and organizational characteristics and findings can be used to inform the translation of EQ5D-5L to other sites. We present recommendations to aid scalability and implementation efforts, including future transition to electronic routine assessments.

Abstract Zhang, Y., Chen, Y., and Wilson, C. 2011. Developing and evaluating harvest control rules with different biological reference points for the American lobster (Homarus americanus) fishery in the Gulf of Maine. – ICES Journal of Marine Science, 68: 1511–1524. The American lobster (Homarus americanus) supports one of the most valuable commercial fisheries in the United States. Controversy exists, however, in terms of the biological reference point (BRP) used in assessing lobster stock status, and there is no fully established or evaluated harvest control rule (HCR). A sex-specific, size-dependent operating model is developed to evaluate the performance of two HCRs, discrete and continuous, which adjust annual fishing mortality discretely and linearly, respectively, based on the status of the fishery. For each HCR, different BRPs are considered along with management duration, recruitment dynamics, and natural mortality. HCRs with a suitable set of BRPs can drive the fishery from an undesirable status to an optimal status. The continuous HCR tends to perform better than the discrete one. The Ftarget of 0.31 year−1 showed the best performance in the long term by balancing the needs of the fishing industry and conservation bodies. However, this was not the case in the short term. An Ntarget of 49.6 million would allow the American lobster to be maintained at its current stock level, with high recruitment and stable natural mortality. The study provides a framework for a systematic evaluation of management regulations for the American lobster.
