This contribution to the “notes-from-the-field” section of the JPHE aims to outline the experiences of lecturers at the University of Borås, Sweden (here and after UB), who turned to on-line education as a response to the spread of Covid-19 during the 2020 spring semester.   To obtain a concise overview of lecturers’ reflections and experiences, an on-line survey was conducted between May 18 and May 31, 2020. A questionnaire consisting of 11 questions with multiple choice alternatives was used. Respondents were also encouraged to comment and develop their responses further, via email. Due to confidentiality, these comments are not explicitly reported in this text.   This text is not intended to present a deep analysis of events, nor an investigation into whatever theoretical framework one may find appropriate for this type of situation. Rather, our contribution alerts researchers in the field to a special situation many of us experienced, in order to provide opportunities to investigate pedagogical challenges in a time of distress, as well as stimulate further discussion about these matters

This chapter tackles the implementation of the way online courses of English language are structured within the on-line degree courses of the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia in Italy. Moving from a double theoretical framework grounded on the links between e-learning and communication and between e-learning and multimedia learning, The author will outline the basic features of the course the author is currently teaching. Besides the standard tools provided by the university platform (the course portal and forum and the course content slides), he has added some ‘external’ tools to offer students further possibilities to interact and take an active role in the learning environment which thus becomes actually ‘blended.’ By making practice of the language through posting comments on a dedicated blog and by exchanging impressions and making queries at a number of Skype-mediated meetings, instructor and students can further interact and create a stronger ‘studying community.’

Background: The expectations of point-of-care ultrasound (PoCUS) in undergraduate clerkship at the University of Ottawa has not been described. We compared clerkship directors’ expectations of physical examination skills with PoCUS skills, before and after completing the clerkship rotation. Methods:  A pilot-tested, expert developed, bilingual on-line survey consisting of 15 questions was sent to all clerkship directors (23) in December 2019. The survey included questions regarding the expectations of medical students with respect to physical examination and PoCUS using the RIME Framework: none, reporter, interpreter, manager, educator. Results: The response rate was 60.9% (14/23). With regards to physical exam skills, 82.8% of directors had no expectations or expected students to be reporters when starting clerkship. At graduation, 77.5% of directors expected students to be interpreters, managers, or educators. For PoCUS, 100.0% of directors had no expectations or expected students to be reporters when starting clerkship. At clerkship completion, 33.0% of directors felt that students should be interpreters or managers for PoCUS skills. Conclusions: Clerkship directors have low expectations of PoCUS skills for entering and graduating clerks when compared with their physical examination skills despite formal pre-clerkship PoCUS objectives. Enhanced communication and targeted education of directors could improve the PoCUS curriculum.

A number of in-class and post-lecture learning strategies are described that have recently been incorporated into the first year chemistry program at the University of Tasmania, Hobart. These methodologies are centered on supporting the various language based challenges that students face in achieving a firm introduction to the discipline. A number of delivery strategies were trialed for in-class activities that overcame institutional specific limitations in access to technologies in an attempt to increase student involvement in lectures and tutorials. Activities included mobile phone-based technologies (and simple overhead transparency/show-of-hand alternatives) for in-class audience surveys, word matching exercises, and chemical songs. The post-lecture approaches also covered a range of delivery platforms, including (i) on-line based quizzes that focused on providing specific, tailored feedback to allow maximal self-reflection on the understanding of key terms and concepts prior to attempting weekly summative assignments where feedback is deliberately kept limited; (ii) developing a broader range of weekly assignment questions (beyond conventional multiple choice) to focus on language issues; (iii) chemical Sudoku puzzles, and (iv) crossword activities. Evaluations of these approaches are presented.

El Prácticum es considerado como un proceso esencial en la formación del futuro docente. En este trabajo se muestra la valoración ejercida por los tres agentes participantes, maestros/as, estudiantes y profesorado universitario, tras un acuerdo de mejora organizativa entre la administración educativa y la universidad. Los estudiantes valoran mejor la labor realizada por su maestro/a tutor/a que la ejercida por su profesor/a tutor/a universitario/a. Los/as maestros/as tutores/as y el profesorado universitario solicitan un mayor reconocimiento (incentivos) por parte de las instituciones responsables, administración educativa y universidad, que deben proporcionar más medios si realmente desean mejorar la formación de nuestro profesorado. Practicum is seen as an essential part of the training of future teachers. This paper shows the results of an assessment of the whole module following an on-line survey involving the three participating agents (i.e. school teachers, students and university lecturers). This was inspired by a joint endeavour to enhance and strengthen the communication and cooperation between the educational administrations and the university. Students value the work done by their school mentor better than that of their university mentor. Both school and university mentors ask for greater recognition (incentives) from the responsible institutions, educational administration and university, all of which must provide more means if they really want to improve the training of pre-service teachers.

This report focusses on the planning and realization of an interdisciplinary local area network (LAN) for medical research at the University of Heidelberg. After a detailed requirements analysis, several networks were evaluated by means of a test installation, and a cost-performance analysis was carried out. At present, the LAN connects 45 (IBM-compatible) PCs, several heterogeneous mainframes (IBM, DEC and Siemens) and provides access to the public X.25 network and to wide-area networks for research (EARN, BITNET). The network supports application software that is frequently needed in medical research (word processing, statistics, graphics, literature databases and services, etc.). Compliance with existing “official” (e.g., IEEE 802.3) and “de facto” standards (e.g., PostScript) was considered to be extremely important for the selection of both hardware and software. Customized programs were developed to improve access control, user interface and on-line help. Wide acceptance of the LAN was achieved through extensive education and maintenance facilities, e.g., teaching courses, customized manuals and a hotline service. Since requirements of clinical routine differ substantially from medical research needs, two separate networks (with a gateway in between) are proposed as a solution to optimally satisfy the users’ demands.

O mercado da prestação de serviços odontológicos tem se tornado cada vez mais competitivo devido à grande quantidade de profissionais e clínicas em funcionamento no Brasil. Para se destacar neste mercado, é preciso estabelecer diferenciais de tratamento e relacionamento com o paciente. Nesse sentido, o marketing de relacionamento pode colaborar para que haja personalização do atendimento, demonstrando uma prestação de serviço de excelência, fidelizando e aprofundando a relação com o paciente. A partir da pesquisa de campo utilizando a ferramenta de questionário on-line Survey Monkey, o presente artigo procurou responder ao seguinte problema de pesquisa: Até que ponto a utilização do marketing de relacionamento pode colaborar com o sucesso das empresas que prestam serviços odontológicos? O objetivo geral deste trabalho foi compreender os fatores críticos que podem contribuir para o sucesso de uma clínica de prestação de serviços odontológicos. E como objetivos específicos: compreender a relação entre a evolução do marketing nível 1.0 ao 3.0, as demandas atuais e sua relação com o marketing de relacionamento em serviços; identificar os fatores mais relevantes para a fidelização de clientes que buscam por serviços odontológicos; e levantar a frequência e os critérios utilizados pelos pacientes a buscarem uma clínica odontológica. O resultado da pesquisa indicou que a aplicação do marketing de relacionamento pode ser de grande importância na fidelização do cliente. Isso é demonstrado nas respostas recebidas, posto que os principais aspectos encontrados nos resultados mostram que características não concernentes à parte técnica da Odontologia, como a confiança transmitida pelo profissional, qualidade em geral, formas de pagamento flexíveis, são pontos altamente considerados pelo paciente na escolha e retorno ao mesmo profissional e/ou clínica odontológica.

Improving professional training and optimizing the work of doctors who provide medical care to patients who come into contact with harmful occupational factors require the approval of a professional standard for the occupational pathology physician. The purpose of the study was to analyze the opinion of the professional community about the importance of various labor functions and labor actions, priority knowledge and skills of occupational pathologists in the development of a professional standard. To achieve this goal, an on-line survey of physicians in occupational pathology and occupational medicine was conducted. Analysis of the survey results showed that the significance of professional competencies is evaluated by specialists to varying degrees. Primary focus is on examination of professional suitability and the link between diseases and the profession. However, correlations of competencies of various blocks indicate the importance of all areas of work of a professional pathologist, which should be taken into account when training specialists in this profile.

The article presents the results of research on psychosocial condition among Polish and Ukrainian students during the quarantine. The aim of the research was to verify the impact of the pandemic and its accompanying phenomena on the well-being of youth. In order to achieve this goal, the CAWI on-line survey method with double measurement was used. The first measurement carried out at the beginning of the quarantine resulted in 3659 filled out surveys in Poland and 739 in Ukraine. The second measurement conducted at the end of distance learning brought 1978 filled out surveys in Poland and 411 in Ukraine. The results of research indicate that the quarantine had a negative impact on the psychosocial condition of youth. The deterioration of emotional condition and the increase in mental disorders has been observed. Due to the pandemic and distance learning, the mental health of youth deteriorated significantly. Polish youth were negatively influenced by the pandemic to a greater extent than young Ukrainians.

This paper reports results from a study comparing perceived risk associated with various recycled water uses in two Australian locations, both in the state of Victoria: the capital city Melbourne, and Bendigo a regional urban centre. Both locations are experiencing ‘drought’, but Bendigo is experiencing this in a more acute manner. A case study is used in each location. Both case studies involve future use of recycled water in new commercial buildings. An on-line survey was used to measure attitudes to recycled water of the future occupants of both buildings. The study found perceived risk associated with 11 uses of recycled water increased as the use became increasingly personal. Interestingly, no difference in perceived risk associated with 11 uses of recycled water was found between locations. Prior experience (use) of recycled water was found to be a significant and positive factor in reducing risk perception. Various attitudinal variables were found to be significant influences on perceived risk. Results indicate that reducing perceived risk of recycled water use may increase satisfaction with its use.
