The aim of this study was to compare the physiological and psychological effects in the elderly during horticultural and nonhorticultural activities as leisure activities. A total of 58 participants aged 65 or older (29 men and 29 women; average age, 74.0 ± 4.7) whose cognitive function was within the normal range were included in this study. Participants performed four horticultural and four nonhorticultural activities for 2 min, respectively. The study had a cross-over experimental design. Electroencephalography was performed during all the activities. Subjective evaluation of emotions was performed using the Profile of Mood States immediately after each activity. The collected statistical data were analyzed using Duncan’s test as a post-analysis of variance test to verify the differences in the results of electroencephalography and the Profile of Mood States according to the different activities. In the results of the electroencephalography, the relative beta, gamma, low-beta, and ratio of sensorimotor rhythm to theta indices indicate that the degree of brain activity in the prefrontal lobe was high during activities such as washing leaves, transplanting plants, and reading news. The results of the Profile of Mood States showed that during activities such as arranging flowers, transplanting, and washing leaves, the total mood disorder score was lowered, indicating a positive effect on the mood of the participants. This study shows that activities such as washing leaves, transplanting, and reading news have a positive effect on the cognitive function of elderly people by increasing brain activity.

Introduction. In recent years, phlebology centers have experienced an increasing inflow of patients presenting with a cosmetic issue related to bulging enlarged veins of the upper extremities. This issue especially affects people, whose jobs are associated with increased physical workloads to hands. A microfoam sclerobliteration procedure for eliminating hand veins has been performed in the phlebology center of the Medical Innovative Phlebological Center (MIPC, Moscow) since 2015. This procedure is indicated for patients with enlarged hand veins, which worsen the psycho-emotional condition of the patients. This study was aimed at developing the optimal method for conducting sclerotherapy of unaesthetic hand veins.Materials and methods. 38 patients (36 women and 2 men) have received sclerotherapy at the clinics of the Medical Innovative Phlebological Center from September 2015 to February 2020. The procedure was conducted using 1.5% to 2.5% lauromacrogol 400 microfoam. Each patient received 1 to 3 sclerotherapy sessions per hand with an interval of 3 to 7 days, the number of injections ranged from 1 to 5 per session.Results. All patients were followed over a period of 1 month to 1 year. Target veins were occluded in 100% of cases. Moderate hyperpigmentation in the projection of obliterated veins was observe in seven patients, after which it disappeared within 3 to 6 months.Conclusion. The aesthetic sclerotherapy of upper limbs is a safe and effective cosmetic procedure. After it is completed, the patients do not have any cicatrices, scars or stitches. Sclerotherapy provides demonstrates high cosmetic efficacy with minimal trauma. The procedure results in selective occlusion of targeted venous segments and makes it possible to preserve the cubital veins.

Bodily expression of felt emotion has been documented in the literature. However, it is often associated with high motor variability between individuals. This study aimed to identify individual motor signature (IMS) of emotions. IMS is a new method of motion analysis and visualization able to capture the subtle differences in the way each of us moves, seen as a kinematic fingerprint. We hypothesized that the individual motor signature would be different depending on the induced emotional state and that an emotional motor signature of joy and sadness common to all participants would emerge. For that purpose, we elicited these emotions (joy, sadness, and a neutral control emotion) in 26 individuals using an autobiographical memory paradigm, before they performed a motor improvization task (e.g., the mirror game). We extracted the individual motor signature under each emotional condition. Participants completed a self-report emotion before and after each trial. Comparing the similarity indexes of intra- and inter-emotional condition signatures, we confirmed our hypothesis and showed the existence of a specific motor signature for joy and sadness, allowing us to introduce the notion of emotional individual motor signature (EIMS). Our study indicates that EIMS can reinforce emotion discrimination and constitutes the first step in modeling emotional behavior during individual task performances or social interactions.
