A cross sectional study was carried out at the department of Forensic Medicine in Dhaka Medical College during the period of January 2008 to December 2009. Data were collected from 3rd copy of the post mortem reports which were preserved in the department of Forensic Medicine with the verbal consent of the doctors who performed autopsy report. During this period total 5114 autopsies were conducted. Out of this 970 cases (19%) were suicidal in nature. It was noticed that all suicidal deaths occurred from 10 years to all age group respectively, but top amongst age group of suicidal deaths occurred in between 21 to 30 years of people. Suicidal deaths are more common in female than male. Suicidal deaths due to hanging is highest, next common causes of death due to organophosphorus compund poisoning. Suicidal deaths by hanging is more in female than male but in poisoning cases male are more lvictimised than female. Objectives of our study are to see the occurrence and methods of suicidal death. Forensic toxicology and forensic medicine are unique among all other medical fields because of their essential legal impact, especially in civil and criminal cases. New high-throughput technologies, borrowed from chemistry and physics, have proven that metabolomics, the youngest of the “omics sciences”, could be one of the most powerful tools for monitoring changes in forensic disciplines. Metabolomics is a particular method that allows for the measurement of metabolic changes in a multicellular system using two different approaches: targeted and untargeted. Targeted studies are focused on a known number of defined metabolites. Untargeted metabolomics aims to capture all metabolites present in a sample. Different statistical approaches (e.g., uni- or multivariate statistics, machine learning) can be applied to extract useful and important information in both cases. This review aims to describe the role of metabolomics in forensic toxicology and in forensic medicine.

Estimation of stature or height of a person is subject to variations during life due to muscular relaxation and elasticity of intervertebral discs, but could be still valuable in identification. Stature of an individual may reduce as age advances after 30 years due to natural senile degeneration. The stature will be reduced by 0.6mm per year after thirty. The identification of the dead body and corpus delicti is important before sentence is passed in murder trials. The present study was carried in the department of Forensic Medicine and Toxicology, ESIC Medical College, Kalburagi. Total 140 students (70 males and 70 females) from ESIC Medical College, Kalburagi were randomly selected for the study. The present study “Estimation of stature from little finger length and formulation of regression equation in both sexes” is taken with the aim, to determine correlation between stature and little finger length of a person and develop regression formulae to estimate stature from little finger length for both male and female sexes separately. The results of this study showed that there is a statistically significant relationship between the little finger length and the stature. In this study females shows strong correlation between little finger length and stature compared to males. The regression equation developed in the study can be used to estimate stature of a person efficiently with SE of 6.6289 and 6.5957 in males for right little finger and left little finger respectively and SE of 6.3239 and 5.3946 in females for right little finger length and left little finger length respectively.

Abstract Background: Pediatric poisoning is a common medical emergency and also associated with a high morbidity and mortality in children. In developing countries like India, poisoning emergencies are becoming a major cause of mortality in infants and toddlers. Among the various studies conducted on poisoning in our country, the study on poisoning is predominantly on adults and hence this study is taken up to understand the incidence of childhood poisoning cases. Method: A ten year retrospective study from January 1999 to December 2008 was conducted at the Department of Forensic Medicine & Toxicology, Kasturba Medical College, Manipal, to comprehend the magnitude of childhood poisoning cases at Kasturba Hospital, Manipal. Results: Insecticide poisoning was the most predominant poisoning followed by venomous bites. Conclusion: Our study examines the most common poison involved and route of intake among children to identify specific ages at risk and give suggestions so as to reduce the morbidity and mortality.

Context: The major duodenal papilla is one of the most fascinating papilla present at the duodenum attracting many gastroenterologists as they do endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatiography (ERCP) for diagnosis and treatment purpose of many diseases. Most of the textbooks of Anatomy describe that the summit of major duodenal papilla is situated posteromedially in the descending part of duodenum. Henceforth the present study was undertaken in 70 human duodenums to observe the location of major duodenal papilla. Materials & Methods: A cross-sectional observational study was conducted in the department of Anatomy, Dhaka Medical College, Dhaka from July 2010 to June 2011. Seventy postmortem human duodenums were collected from unclaimed dead bodies that were under examination in the morgue of department of Forensic Medicine and the department of Anatomy of Dhaka Medical College, Dhaka. Location of major duodenal papilla was observed and recorded. Results: The location of major duodenal papilla was observed in the medial wall of second part of duodenum in 78.6% specimens, in the posteromedial wall of second part in 15.7% cases and in the posteromedial wall of the junction between second and third part in 4.3% and absent in 1.4% duodenum. Background: Anthropometry is the hallmark technique for biological anthropometry and has become increasingly important in health assessment across this century. Craniofacial anthropometry is study of face and skull. The local data on inner canthal distance, outer canthal distance and canthal index may signify the differential developmental pattern resulting from various factors such as gender, age, genetic and climate and may help in craniofacial surgery, orthodontists, congenital anomalies and forensic science. Objectives: The objective of the study is to compare anthropometric dimension related to inner canthal distance, outer canthal distance and canthal index. Methodology: The outer and inner canthal measurements of Nepali population wereobserved in 318 normal male and female. Out of total samples, 156 male and 162 female of age 17 – 25 years were taken for study since study was done in medical college preclinical students. The inner and outer canthal distances were measured by using a digital sliding caliper graduated in millimeters. The canthal index was calculated. Results: There was statistically significant difference in inner canthal distance among female (31.84± 2.22)mm and male (34.48 ±3.35)mm (P<0.001). We found statistically significant difference in the outer canthal distance among female 94.30±3.42 mm and male 96.54±4.77mm (P<0.001); moreover, there was significance difference in mean canthal index among female and male (33.77±2.42 and 35.79±3.76; P<0.001) respectively. Conclusion: This work has generated normative values for canthal dimensions of Nepali population. The study would be of benefit not only to anthropometrist, oral and maxillofacial surgeons, plastic surgeons, forensic medicine, but also to orthodontists and dysmorphologists.

In this paper the remnants of British medical jurisprudence, the medico legal service of Bangladesh were discussed to improve the current medico legal practice and to propose future plan. In Bangladesh, all unnatural deaths are to be reported at the nearest police station and an appointed police officer should visit the scene of occurrence for investigation and to arrange postmortem if required. The forensic services of the country are delivered partly by academic staffs of government medical colleges' forensic medicine department and rest by the civil surgeons - the district health administrator. The civil surgeons perform postmortem by the doctors under him in district hospitals, most of them have no forensic qualifications. Currently academic and professional postgraduate courses are available. The chemical examiner's laboratory is situated at Dhaka with the facility of quantitative tests only. The Government of Bangladesh is trying to standardize the existing system. A workshop on medico legal service was organized recently at Dhaka by the Medico Legal Society of Bangladesh. A DNA profiling laboratory was established at Dhaka Medical College Forensic Medicine Department. Such progress is a milestone in the development of medico legal service in Bangladesh. Death is unnatural when caused permaturely against the order of nature by injury, position or other means of violence. Data on unnatural deaths may reflect the law and order situation in a particular area of jurisdiction. This study is concerned with pattern of unnatural deaths in Dhaka Medical College mortuary during 1996. We found 1725 (97%) cases of unnatural deaths by analyzing 1772 cases of deaths. Data gives 18.37% increment in unnatural deaths 77.28% was males and 22.71% females. The frequency pattern of unnatural deaths were 68.92% RTAs, 11.69% homicide, 08.00% suicide and 2.80 natural. Burn, electrocution and others comprise the rest 11.565 unnatural deaths. Males suffer 3.4X more unnatural deaths than females. But RTAs males were 5.31X, in homicide 11.40X, in suicide 1.70X respectively than females. In hanging, female were predominant (1.72X of male deaths). 21-40 years is the age group showing peak frequencies on different types of unnatural deaths though hanging showed peak on 11-20 years. Besides, 95.47% of the unnatural deaths were the Muslims, 4.25% were Hindu and .14% was Christians. Firearms were used in 29.40% cases, blunt weapon in 38.46% cases and sharp cutting weapon in 31.60% cases of homicides respectively.
