Are job insecurity and burnout related? An exploration in the bank sector Are job insecurity and burnout related? An exploration in the bank sector This study analyzes the associations between both quantitative and qualitative job insecurity and burnout. A more differentiated measurement of qualitative job insecurity is used, in which insecurity is measured regarding four aspects: the job content, working circumstances, working conditions and social relations. Data gathered among Belgian bank employees are used to test the hypotheses (n = 7146). The results show that both quantitative and qualitative job insecurity are negatively associated with the three components of burnout (emotional exhaustion, distance and reduced feeling of competence). Job insecurity is strongly associated with distance: insecure employees tend to distance themselves from their job. This emphasizes the strong impact of job insecurity, since it is even associated with burnout.

We also analyse whether the relationship between job insecurity and psychological ill-being is mediated by job satisfaction. A more subtle and differentiated measurement of qualitative job insecurity is used, in which insecurity is measured regarding four aspects: the job content, working circumstances, working conditions and social relations. Data gathered among Belgian bank employees are used to test the hypotheses. The results show that both quantitative and qualitative job insecurity are negatively associated with job satisfaction and positively associated with psychological ill-being. The relationship between job insecurity and psychological ill-being is only partially mediated by job satisfaction. This signifies that the impact of job insecurity exceeds the boundaries of work, since it exerts an autonomous impact on the psychological well-being of individual workers. Limitations of the research and recommendations for further research are discussed.

Objectives The aim of the study was to assess the psychosocial risks to which workers in a wiring firm in Portugal are exposed, and to assess their impact in terms of worker’s health and well-being. The exposure to risks, the risk levels and the health and well-being status were self-reported. Methods Data was collected using the short version of the Copenhagen Psychosocial Questionnaire. Data analysis was descriptive: the scale’s reliability was assessed, traffic light analysis was performed, and relative risk of exposure to psychosocial risks was calculated. Workers perceive exposure to several psychosocial risks, in particular in the production line and women. In general, the deteriorating psychosocial work environment is associated with lower health and well-being. Results The study identifies job demands and job insecurity as the main psychosocial risk factors. However, some of the risk factors that are perceived less frequently, such as Social Relations and Leadership, Quality of Leadership, Rewards, Work/ Family Conflict and Self-efficacy, have a strong impact on the health and well-being of the workers who perceive them. Conclusions The results highlight the need for a multidimensional approach to the assessment and management of psychosocial risks, to facilitate targeted intervention that take into account different risk factors, as well as different groups of workers.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to contribute to the knowledge of precarious and low-quality jobs with the study of toilet attendants, an ideal typical case of low-wage manual service workers who are excluded from secure wages, decent working conditions, and employment protection. Design/methodology/approach An extensive survey with standardized questionnaires (n=107) and in-depth interviews (n=10) of toilet attendants in Belgian towns, mostly Brussels and Ghent. Results are compared to the work quality of low-skilled workers, and the within-group position of necessity workers is analysed. Findings Toilet attendants definitely occupy “bad jobs”, measured by the higher prevalence of informal and false self-employed statuses, more intense work-life conflicts and verbal aggression from clients, and a lower job satisfaction. In all these respects, they perform worse than other low-skilled workers. Concurrently, there is a strong within-group divide between necessity workers and those who see the job as an opportunity. Despite a similar job content, necessity workers less often earn a decent wage, suffer more from customer aggression, lack social support and pleasure from work. Mechanisms related to self-selection and the absence of intrinsic rewards explain these in-group differences. Originality/value This contribution indicates, first, that job insecurity spills over into poor working conditions, work-life conflicts, and customer aggression. Furthermore, it documents that jobs are not necessarily bad in themselves, but become problematic when taken up by people with too few choices and too pressing socio-economic needs. Problems of sub-standard jobs are not merely job problems but problems of workers in a certain position.

The social policy of a country is a set of specific activities aimed at regulating the social relations between different in their social status subjects. This approach to clarifying social policy is also called functional and essentially addresses social policy as an activity to regulate the relationship of equality or inequality in society. It provides an opportunity to look for inequalities in the economic positions of individuals in relation to ownership, labor and working conditions, distribution of income and consumption, social security and health, to look for the sources of these inequalities and their social justification or undue application.The modern state takes on social functions that seek to regulate imbalances, to protect weak social positions and prevent the disintegration of the social system. It regulates the processes in society by harmonizing interests and opposing marginalization. Every modern country develops social activities that reflect the specifics of a particular society, correspond to its economic, political and cultural status. They are the result of political decisions aimed at directing and regulating the process of adaptation of the national society to the transformations of the market environment. Social policy is at the heart of the development and governance of each country. Despite the fact that too many factors and problems affect it, it largely determines the physical and mental state of the population as well as the relationships and interrelationships between people. On the other hand, social policy allows for a more global study and solving of vital social problems of civil society. On the basis of the programs and actions of political parties and state bodies, the guidelines for the development of society are outlined. Social policy should be seen as an activity to regulate the relationship of equality or inequality between different individuals and social groups in society. Its importance is determined by the possibility of establishing on the basis of the complex approach: the economic positions of the different social groups and individuals, by determining the differences between them in terms of income, consumption, working conditions, health, etc .; to explain the causes of inequality; to look for concrete and specific measures to overcome the emerging social disparities.

Because bank employees have been found to be especially susceptible to burnout and depression, we explored the relationship between these variables, and examined the moderating effect of perceived employability on the burnout–depression relationship in a sample of Chinese bank employees. As we expected, burnout and perceived employability were, respectively, positively and negatively associated with depression. The results of hierarchical regression and structural equation modeling indicated that perceived employability moderated the relationship between burnout and depression; higher perceived employability was associated with a weaker relationship between burnout and depression. Interventions aimed at developing the perceived employability of Chinese bank employees may help to improve mental health in this group.

PurposeThe aims of this study are to (1) evaluate physicians and nurses' perspectives on patient safety culture amid the COVID-19 pandemic and (2) integrate the emotional exhaustion of physicians and nurses into an evaluation of patient safety culture to provide insights into appropriate implications for medical care.Design/methodology/approachPatient safety culture was assessed with the Chinese version of the Safety Attitudes Questionnaire. Confirmatory factor analysis was conducted to validate the structure of the data (i.e. reliability and validity), and Pearson's correlation analysis was performed to identify relationships between safety-related dimensions.FindingsSafety climate was strongly associated with working conditions and teamwork climate. In addition, working conditions was highly correlated with perceptions of management and job satisfaction, respectively. It is worth noting that the stress and emotional exhaustion of the physicians and nurses during this epidemic were high and needed attention.Practical implicationsFor healthcare managers and practitioners, team-building activities, power of public opinions, IoT-focused service, and Employee Assistance Programs are important implications for inspiring the patient safety-oriented culture during the period of the COVID-19 pandemic.Originality/valueThis paper considers the role of emotional state into patient safety instrument, a much less understood but equally important dimension in the field of patient safety.

BackgroundIncome inequalities have risen from the 1990s to 2000s, following the economic recession in 1994, but little research has investigated socioeconomic inequalities in suicide mortality for working-age men and women (aged between 30 and 64 years) over the time using longitudinal data in Sweden.MethodsUsing Swedish national register data between 1990 and 2007 as a series of repeated cohort studies with a 3-year follow-up (sample sizes were approximately 3.7 to 4.0 million in each year), relative and slope indices of inequality (RII and SII respectively) based on quintiles of individual disposable income were calculated and tested for temporal trends.ResultsSII for the risk of suicide mortality ranged from 27.6 (95% CI 19.5 to 35.8) to 44.5 (36.3 to 52.6) in men and 5.2 (0.2 to 10.4) to 16.6 (10.7 to 22.4) in women (per 100 000 population). In men, temporal trends in suicide inequalities were stable in SII but increasing in RII by 3% each year (p=0.002). In women, inequalities tended to increase in both RII and SII, especially after the late-1990s, with 10% increment in RII per year (p<0.001).ConclusionsDespite universal social security and generous welfare provision, income inequalities in suicide were considerable and have widened, especially in women. The steeper rise in women may be partially related to higher job insecurity and poorer working conditions in the female dominated public sector after the recession. To reduce health consequences following an economic crisis and widened income inequalities, additional measures may be necessary in proportion to the levels of financial vulnerability.

The overall task of this paper is to elaborate a typology of the forms of labour that are needed for the production, circulation and use of digital media. First, we introduce a cultural-materialist perspective on theorising digital labour. Second, we discuss the relevance of Marx’s concept of the mode of production for the analysis of digital labour. Third, we introduce a typology of the dimensions of working conditions. Fourth, based on the preceding sections we present a digital labour analysis toolbox. Finally, we draw some conclusions. We engage with the question what labour is, how it differs from work, which basic dimensions it has and how these dimensions can be used for defining digital labour. We introduce the theoretical notion of the mode of production as analytical tool for conceptualizing digital labour. Modes of production are dialectical units of relations of production and productive forces. Relations of production are the basic social relations that shape the economy. Productive forces are a combination of labour power, objects and instruments of work in a work process, in which new products are created. We have a deeper look at dimensions of the work process and the conditions under which it takes place. We present a typology that identifies dimensions of working conditions. It is a general typology that can be used for the analysis of any production process.

Introduction: Burn-out is defined as a syndrome of emotional exhaustion, depersonalization and diminished self-achievement that affects individuals exposed to chronic occupational stress. Physicians and caregivers faced with the death of their patients, such as oncology, are particularly vulnerable to this syndrome. Objectives: To evaluate the burn-out of medical professionals in medical oncology, to research the predisposing factors and to analyze the functional complaints and the behavior of the staff associated with this syndrome. Methods: A descriptive and analytical cross-sectional study among medical oncology professionals practicing in public hospitals in the Tunisian territory who exercise more than two years in oncology; with the Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI). Results: Our study population was predominantly female (81%). 53% are doctors and 47% are paramedical health care professionals. A high degree of emotional exhaustion, depersonalization and personal achievement were found in 63%, 53% and 59% in our population, respectively. With 21% global high burn-out. The female sex was associated with high emotional exhaustion and low personal accomplishment as well as global burn-out. This burn-out was attributed to factors associated with working conditions and professional climate, mainly: overwork, poor organization of service, lack of resources and time, lack of recognition, lack of communication, lack of respect, conflicts with colleagues, report unsatisfactory salary effort and aggressions by patients and their families. Functional complaints and health care professional’s behavior associated with burn-out were: feelings of sadness, blockage, and irritability, sleep disorders, unexplained pain, epigastralgia, addictive behaviors, psychotropic consumption, suicidal thoughts, decreased performance and desire for a job transfer. Conclusions: By its impact on professionals, burn-out in medical oncology represents a major threat to the quality of health care. Its etiologies, although complex and intricate, are well known. Its prevention and its support are possible, but involve mobilization at all levels.
