Background: Climacteric syndrome, occurring during menopausal transition, plays a key role in the alteration of women's quality of life. Aims: This study investigated the relationship between perimenopausal symptoms, sleep quality, quality of life, and food behavior in women on menopausal transition in western Algeria. Subjects and Methods: The study included 131 perimenopausal women (Mean age = 48 ± 3 years). The climacteric syndrome and quality of life were assessed by the menopause rating scale (MRS) questionnaire. The quality of sleep was evaluated by the Pittsburgh sleep quality index (PSQI) and food consumption by the 24h recall method. Results: The mean score of psychological (9.63 ± 2.93) and somatic (10.74 ± 3.43) symptoms were significantly higher (p= 0.000) and the total score of MRS was 24 ± 6, which means that women have an impaired quality of life. A high significance (p= 0.000) was also noted in subscales scores of sleep components; sleep disturbances (1.69± 0.62), subjective sleep quality (1.55± 0.93), and sleep latency (1.40 ± 1.23), compared to other sleep components. Poor sleep quality was explained by a high score of PSQI (8 ± 4). The MRS subscale scores showed a significant correlation with total PSQI score (r =0.600, p=0.01). A positive energy balance was also recorded with a high protein (13% of TEI) and polyunsaturated fatty acids intake (33%) and low lipids (23% of TEI), monounsaturated fatty acids (41%), and animal protein intake (26%). Conclusions: Perimenopause is a difficult period in a woman's life, disrupting her quality of life and sleep quality leading to disturbances in eating behavior and body weight gain. Fatigue and poor sleep quality are the most common clinical complaints of people with diabetes mellitus (DM). These complaints are early signs of DM and are closely related to diabetic control and the presence of complications, which lead to a decline in the quality of life. Therefore, an accurate measurement of the relationship between fatigue, sleep status, and the complication of DM nephropathy could lead to a specific definition of fatigue and an appropriate medical treatment. This study recruited 307 people with Type 2 diabetes from two medical centers in Northern Taiwan through a questionnaire survey and a retrospective investigation of medical records. In an attempt to identify the related factors and accurately predict diabetic nephropathy, we applied hybrid research methods, integrated biostatistics, and feature selection methods in data mining and machine learning to compare and verify the results. Consequently, the results demonstrated that patients with diabetic nephropathy have a higher fatigue level and Charlson comorbidity index (CCI) score than without neuropathy, the presence of neuropathy leads to poor sleep quality, lower quality of life, and poor metabolism. Furthermore, by considering feature selection in selecting representative features or variables, we achieved consistence results with a support vector machine (SVM) classifier and merely ten representative factors and a prediction accuracy as high as 74% in predicting the presence of diabetic nephropathy.

Abstract Objectives We investigated the associations between health-related quality of life (HRQoL) and health, pain and lifestyle factors, as well as motivation for lifestyle changes, in adults living with chronic pain referred to a Danish pain centre. Methods A total of 144 outpatients completed a questionnaire on HRQoL (EQ-5D-5L), health, pain, lifestyle factors (Body Mass Index [BMI], physical activity, smoking, alcohol, physical fitness, eating, sleep and stress) and motivation for lifestyle changes. We used multiple linear regression analyses to assess associations between HRQoL and the independent variables. Results The participants (age mean 50 years, 81% females) had ≥2 body pain sites (93%), BMI≥25 (64%), sedentary lifestyle (43%) and multiple (n≥2) elevated metabolic risk factors (58%). Most considered lifestyle important for HRQoL (72%) and expressed moderate to very high motivation for changing lifestyle (92%). Poorer HRQoL in the study population was significantly associated with higher pain intensity in the most painful body site (β=−0.316, p=0.001) and very poor sleep quality (β=−0.410, p=0.024). Serious-to-extreme problems in usual activities were associated with significantly poorer health (β=−0.328, p=0.030). Conclusions Adults living with chronic pain participating in this survey had significantly lower self-evaluated HRQoL than the general population. Lower HRQoL was significantly associated with greater pain intensity and poor sleep quality. Serious-to-extreme problems in usual activities, such as work, study, housework, family and leisure, were associated with poorer self-evaluated health. We observed high frequencies of overweight, obesity, sedentary lifestyle, pain in multiple body sites and multiple lifestyle-related risk factors in the study population. Most participants felt motivated for changing lifestyle. Further interventions addressing pain alleviation, sleep quality, prevention of problems in usual activities and promotion of healthy lifestyle, e.g. physical activity and healthy eating, are needed to estimate the effect of a lifestyle-oriented approach on health and quality of life in people living with chronic pain. Abstract Background Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is associated with a reduced quality of life. Minority patients with IBD specifically report more impairing symptoms compared with nonminority patients. Sleep quality, a key component of quality of life, is significantly compromised in minority patients compared with nonminority patients. Nevertheless, subjective and objective sleep assessments in minority patients with IBD have not explicitly been assessed. The purpose of this prospective cohort study is to assess and compare objective sleep parameters utilizing wrist actigraphy between minority and nonminority IBD patients. Methods In this institutional review board approved study, 74 patients with IBD were recruited and stratified into 2 cohorts by self-identification: white nonminority patients and minority patients. Patients in the minority cohort included black and Hispanic individuals (black and nonblack). Exclusion criteria included significant comorbidity, a history of an underlying sleep disorder, or patients who did not self-identify into categorized cohorts. Sleep was measured not only through wrist-based actigraphy but also with sleep surveys. Sleep parameters were compared between minority and nonminority cohorts. Regression analyses were performed to assess for factors independently associated with parameters of poor sleep quality. Results Sixty-four patients (86.4%) were included in the final analysis. Thirty-one individuals (48.4%) were categorized into the nonminority cohort, and 33 (51.6%) patients were in the minority cohort. A significantly higher number of minority patients had poorer sleep efficiency and fragmented sleep compared with nonminority patients (90.9% vs 67.7%; P = 0.03 and 87.8% vs 61.3%; P = 0.02). In the adjusted analysis, minority status was independently associated with poor sleep efficiency (odds ratio = 6.41; 95% confidence interval, 1.48-28.17; P = 0.0139) and fragmented sleep (odds ratio = 4.98; 95% confidence interval, 1.09-22.89; P = 0.0389). Conclusions Minority patients with IBD were shown to have poorer objective measures of sleep as assessed through wrist actigraphy compared to nonminority patients. Cultural competency in the care of minority patients with IBD, specifically focusing on the management of psychosocial issues, is needed to address these disparities in sleep. The inclusion of minority patients with IBD in studies investigating sleep and other psychosocial issues are warranted not only to assess potential disparities in disease course but also to determine the etiologies of poor sleep in minority patients with IBD.

RESUMO Objetivo: avaliar a associação dos fatores de risco para as doenças cardiovasculares e qualidade de vida em universitários que trabalham. Método: trata-se de um estudo quantitativo, transversal e analítico, com 40 discentes. Analisaram-se os dados no SPSS 21. Resultados: 55% da amostra possuem qualidade de sono ruim e que 15% distúrbio do sono. Quanto ao nível de atividade física, 65% dos que trabalham foram classificados com sedentários. Com relação aos domínios de “dor”, foi observada uma diferença estatisticamente significativa (p = 0,01) apontando que os universitários que trabalham apresentam mais dor. Conclusão: mesmo em uma população de adultos jovens, observou-se o estado de vulnerabilidade para o desenvolvimento de DCV, sendo preocupantes, entre os universitários que trabalham, o nível da qualidade de sono e o sedentarismo observados, que podem comprometer a saúde e a qualidade de vida dessa população. ObjectiveSleep is often disturbed in patients with advanced cancer. There is limited knowledge about sleep in patients with cancer treated with strong opioids. This study examines sleep quality in patients with advanced cancer who are treated with a WHO Step III opioid for pain.MethodsAn international, multicentre, cross-sectional study with 604 adult patients with cancer pain using WHO Step III opioids. Sleep quality was assessed by the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) global score (range; 0–21; score >5 indicates poor sleep). PSQI includes sleep quality, sleep latency, sleep duration, sleep efficiency, sleep disturbances, use of sleep medications and daytime dysfunction. Pain and quality of life were assessed by Brief Pain Inventory and European Organisation for Research and Treatment of Cancer Quality of Life Questionnaire Core30.ResultsThe median age was 62 years, 42% were female, mean Karnofsky performance score (KPS) was 62.5 (±14.2) and mean oral daily morphine equivalent dose was 303 mg/24 hours (±543.8 mg). The mean PSQI global score was 8.8 (±4.2) (range 0–20). Seventy-eight per cent were poor sleepers. All PSQI components were affected, and 44% reported trouble sleeping caused by pain. In the multiple regression model, predictors of PSQI global scores were pain intensity, emotional function, constipation, financial difficulties and KPS (adjusted R2=0.21).ConclusionThe majority (78%) of these patients with cancer treated with Step III opioids experienced poor sleep quality. Pain intensity, emotional function, constipation, financial difficulties and KPS predicted poor PSQI global scores. The clinical implication is that healthcare personnel should routinely assess and treat sleep disturbance in patients with advanced cancer disease.

Objective: To compare the health status (stress, depressive symptoms and sleep quality), the resilience and quality of life in first and fourth year nursing students.Methods: This is a cross-sectional research conducted in 2016 with 86 students enrolled in first and fourth years of the nursing degree. We applied the instrument for Assessment of Stress in Nursing Students, the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale, Pittsburg Sleep Quality Index, Wagnild and Young’s Resilience Scale; and the WHOQOL-BREF. ANOVA (Test F) was applied for data analysis.Results and conclusions: A total of 49 first-year and 37 fourth-year students were sampled for this study. Fourth- year nursing students showed higher levels of stress, lower intensity of depressive symptoms and higher quality of life and resilience levels. The poor sleep quality was prevalent in both groups. Conclusion: although the nursing education potentially contributes for students’ sickness, the experiences lived in this period may strength the resilience skills.Conclusions: Video indexing and retrieval are accomplished by using hashing and $k$-d tree methods, while visual signatures containing color, shape and texture information are estimated for the key-frames, by using image and frequency domain techniques. Experimental results with the dataset of a multimedia information system especially developed for managing television broadcast archives demonstrate that our approach works efficiently, retrieving videos in 0.16 seconds on average and achieving recall, precision and F1 measure values, as high as 0.76, 0.97 and 0.86 respectively.

BackgroundMany patients with interstitial lung disease (ILD) experience poor sleep quality, which may contribute to decreased quality of life. Sleep disordered breathing is commonly associated with ILD but there is less information on other factors that may contribute to poor sleep quality.MethodsWe conducted a cross-sectional analysis of 101 patients with a diagnosis of ILD at a pulmonary rehabilitation assessment clinic. We assessed the prevalence of poor sleep quality using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) and performed multivariable logistic regression analysis to determine factors independently associated with poor sleep quality.ResultsMedian forced expiratory volume in 1 s was 64% predicted (interquartile range (IQR) 50–77%) and vital capacity was 62% predicted (IQR 48–78%). 67 (66%) out of 101 patients reported poor sleep quality. The median PSQI was 8 units (IQR 4–11 units). There were no significant differences in physical or physiological parameters including age, sex distribution, body mass index or spirometry values between subjects with good sleep quality and those with poor sleep quality (all p>0.1). Multivariable logistic regression showed that depression (p=0.003) and Epworth Sleepiness Scale (p=0.03) were independently associated with poor sleep quality.ConclusionPoor sleep quality is common in patients with ILD and is independently associated with increasing symptoms of depression and sleepiness. Routine assessment of sleep quality should be undertaken and interventions targeting depression and coexisting sleep disorders may be required in symptomatic patients to determine if sleep quality and ultimately, health-related quality of life improves as a result.

Background: Subjective sleep quality plays a pivotal role in health, quality of life, and efficient performance. Objectives: The present study aimed to investigate the epidemiology of subjective sleep quality in the citizens of Kermanshah, Iran. Methods: This cross-sectional, descriptive study was conducted on all the citizens of Kermanshah in 2017. In total, 450 subjects were selected via multistage random sampling. Based on the inclusion criteria, 416 were evaluated using a self-report questionnaire of demographic characteristics and Petersburg sleep quality index (PSQI; Baisi et al., 1989). Results: In 79% of the participants, the mean score of PSQI was above the cutoff point (m = 6.64). The analysis of the questionnaires indicated the highest frequency of sleep disorders to be in the components of subjective sleep quality from the perspective of the respondents, delayed sleep, sleep disorders, and daily functional disorders. In addition, 10.6% of the subjects used very high doses of sedatives, while 10.3% used relatively high doses of these pills. Minimal sleep disorders were reported as well. Poor sleep quality was less common in women, and significant correlations were observed between age and sleep latency, sleep duration, sleep medication use, and daytime dysfunction due to sleepiness. Conclusions: According to the results, subjective sleep quality was favorable in the citizens of Kermanshah. Considering the significant effects of sleep quality on performance and quality of life, attention must be paid to this aspect of health by healthcare planners and managers.

Poor sleep quality can worsen hypertension, type 2 diabetes and obesity, thereby increasing the incidence of cardiovascular disease, as well as accelerating the progression of end-stage kidney disease and reducing survival rates. In hemodialysis patients, many factors affect the patient’s quality of life start from a psychological, physiological, social, and economic perspective can decreased the patient’s quality of life. To know about the relationship between sleep quality and quality of life in hemodialysis patients, this study uses a literature review method, based on the results of an article published within the last 10 years. From 5 journals that met the criteria, it was found that there was relationship between sleep quality and quality of life. There is a significant relationship between sleep quality and quality of life in hemodialysis patients.   Keywords: Hemodialysis, Sleep quality, Quality of life.
