This article aims to examine the Islamic reform project through the reconstruction of theology and thought carried out by Ḥassan Ḥanafī and Indonesian Muslim intellectuals. Ḥassan Ḥanafī considered the need to reconstruct classical theology, which is regarded as too abstract in describing theological terms and does not have a strong practical basis as a value for the action. In criticizing classical theology, Ḥassan Ḥanafī offers two theocentric theories, namely language analysis, and social reality analysis. Conducting library research that relies on written materials and analyzed with content analysis techniques, the present study shows that Ḥassan Ḥanafī’s theoanthropocentric theological ideas have intersections with the development of Islamic thought in Indonesia. This can be proven by the translation of Ḥassan Ḥanafī’s books and examining his thoughts in Indonesia. Apart from that, Ḥassan Ḥanafī’s thoughts find relevance in Indonesia because Indonesian Muslim scholars carry out similar reform projects.

The Western has always insulted Islam as an out of date, irrational, dogmatic, mystical, static, undemocratic religion and so on. Despite the fact, Islam is a religion that rahmatan lil ‘alamin, dynamic and democratic. But the Western negative assessment of Islam is very strongly attached to their memory. So it’s quite difficult to change the Western understanding of Islam. Furthermore, Islamic societies who are too fanatical tend to shut down and reject the modern era. That is what make the problem more complex. Therefore, Indonesian Muslim Intellectuals sought to overcome this problem by developing Neo-modernism/ Post-modernism (in the 20th century). This is in accordance with the purpose of this article which is to find out Islamic discourse and Neo-modernism/ Post-modernism in the perspective of Nurcholish Madjid and Abdurrahman Wahid. The Research was conducted using a qualitative approach of the type of library research. The results of this study indicate that according to these two figures Post-modernism can be used as a bridge to develop Islamic thought as a religion that will always exist in all space and time, but Islamic values must remain radiated in the modern era. Thus, as Muslims especially intellectuals must be able to balance religion and general science.

Contemporary Islamic scholarship emerged in the mid-nineteenth centuryin response to the overall stagnation of Muslim society and culture.Muslim reformers advanced a simple but powerful thesis: overcoming theweaknesses and deficiencies of contemporary Muslim society requires profoundsocial and cultural reforms, and hence a critical examination of traditionalthought and institutions. The pioneers of contemporary Islamic reform were versed in both modemWestern and traditional Islamic thought. Early reformers, such as Al-Afghani, Abduh, al-Kawakibi, and Iqbal critically engaged both the systemof ideas inherited from the Muslim past and those received from the modernWest. Their free spirit, inquisitive minds, and unyielding courageallowed them to place intellectual reform on a critical yet balanced path. While the tradition of critical thinking they espoused continues to growand flourish among many contemporary Muslim thinkers, the balance theymaintained in criticizing the self and the other has been lost by a large segmentof Muslim intellectuals. Most Muslim intellectuals are critical ofeither traditional Muslim scholarship or Western thought, but seldom both. This one-sidedness has turned knowledge and scholarship into a partisantool to be used against the perceived ideological adversary.Factors contributing to the one-sidedness of many contemporary Muslimscholars are numerous, and are often rooted in pure political or economicmotives. Two factors, however, stand out as expressively theoretical andintellectual: the ahistorical view of ideas and concepts among Muslims, whereby what has been devised by early scholars is given universal andabsolute validity; and the absence of an Archimedean point from which theintellectual can judge both. For over a century now, Muslim intellectuals have been divided into twomajor blocs, the advocates of modernity and the defenders of Islamic tradition. The former continue to see Islam as a premodern legacy, incapable ofleading Muslim society into a challenging future. Trapped in an end-of-historymindset, they have not been able to develop a critical approach to ...

For some, the idea of an Islamic state serves to fulfill aspirations for cultural sovereignty and new forms of ethical political practice. For others, it violates the proper domains of both religion and politics. Yet, while there has been much discussion of the idea and ideals of the Islamic state, its possibilities and impossibilities, surprisingly little has been written about how this political formation is lived. This book looks at the Republic of Sudan's twenty-five-year experiment with Islamic statehood. Focusing not on state institutions, but rather on the daily life that goes on in their shadows, the book examines the lasting effects of state Islamization on Sudanese society through a study of the individuals and organizations working in its midst. The book investigates Sudan at a crucial moment in its history—balanced between unity and partition, secular and religious politics, peace and war—when those who desired an Islamic state were rethinking the political form under which they had lived for nearly a generation. Countering the dominant discourse, the book depicts contemporary Islamic politics not as a response to secularism and Westernization but as a node in a much longer conversation within Islamic thought, augmented and reappropriated as state projects of Islamic reform became objects of debate and controversy. The book reveals both novel political ideals and new articulations of Islam as it is rethought through the lens of the nation.

The advent of the 1990s marked, among other things, the restructuring of the Muslim world in its relation to Islam. This new context has proved to be extremely favorable to the emergence of scholars who define themselves as reformists or modernists. They have dedicated themselves to reform in Islam based on the values of peace, human rights, and secular governance. One can find an example of this approach in the works of renowned intellectuals such as Farid Esack, Mohamed Talbi, or Mohamed Arkoun, to name a few. However, the question of Islamic reform has been debated during the 19th and 20th centuries. This article aims to comprehend the historical evolution of contemporary reformist thinkers in the scientific field. The literature surrounding these intellectuals is based primarily on content analysis. These approaches share a type of reading that focuses on the interaction and codetermination of religious interpretations rather than on the relationships and social dynamics that constitute them. Despite these contributions, it seems vital to question this contemporary thinking differently: what influence does the context of post-Islamism have on the emergence of this intellectual trend? What connections does it have with the social sciences and humanities? How did it evolve historically? In this context, the researchers will analyze co-citations in representative samples to illustrate the theoretical framework in which these intellectuals are located, and its evolution. Using selected cases, this process will help us to both underline the empowerment of contemporary Islamic thought and the formation of a real corpus of works seeking to reform Islam.
