Antioxidants are electron-donating compounds or reductants, these compounds have small molecular weights, but can deactivate the development of oxidation reactions by preventing the formation of free radicals. One of the plants that have potential as natural antioxidants is the Ulin leaf (Eusideroxylon zwageri). This study aims to determine the antioxidant activity of the extracts of young and old leaves of Ulin plants against DPPH radicals (1, 1-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl) using a UV-Vis Spectrophotometer. Both young and old leaves were extracted using methanol at room temperature then concentrated using a vacuum rotary evaporator to obtain a crude extract. Phytochemical analysis was conducted to identify the secondary metabolite compounds which include flavonoids, alkaloids, tannins, terpenoid saponins, and steroids. To determine the antioxidant activity, the test was carried out with series concentrations aimed at calculating the IC50 value, the concentration at which the test sample was able to inhibit 50% of the free radical DPPH The phytochemical analysis showed that young and old leaves contained the same phytochemical content, specifically Flavonoids, Tannins, Saponins, terpenoids, while Alkaloids and steroids were not detected. The antioxidant activity test showed that the IC50 value of young leaves, old leaves, and Ascorbic acid as the positive control were 22.93 ppm, 13.31 ppm, and 7.08 ppm consecutively. This result shows that Ulin leaves are in a strong category because both young and old leaves have an IC50 value of less than 100 ppm.

Free radicals are molecules that lose electrons in their outer orbitals so that the number of electrons becomes odd and unstable. Free radicals can damage various macromolecule cells including proteins, carbohydrates, fats. Antioxidants are compounds that can donate one or more electrons to free radicals. Avocado leaves contain high bioactive components that can be used as a source of natural antioxidants. Avocado leaves that have been dried, mashed and then shifted with methanol. The extracts were tested by phytochemical screening, including flavonpoid, phenolic, tannin and antioxidant activity using the DPPH (2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhidrazyl) method. This method is based on the reduction of 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) against free radicals which causes a change from purple to yellow 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl) (DPPH). From the research, the IC50 values in avocado leaves were 118.8056 µg / mL and 7,276 µg / mL on ascorbic acid as a positive control. From the IC50 value obtained, it is known that the methanol extract of avocado leaves has strong antioxidant activity to fight free radicals.

Oxidative stress plays a major role in diabetic physiopathology; hence, the interest of using natural antioxidants as therapeutic tools exists. The aim of this study was the evaluation of in vitro antioxidant activity and inhibitory potential of organic extracts from Aristolochia longa roots against key enzymes linked to hyperglycemia. Antioxidant activity was performed using 2,2′-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and 2,2-azino-bis-3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid (ABTS) radicals and ferric reducing/antioxidant power (FRAP) methods. The α-Glucosidase and β-Galactosidase inhibitory activities were investigated using an in vitro model. Moreover, phytochemical analysis of tested extracts was carried out. The aqueous fraction of this herb exhibited the highest antioxidant activity for both DPPH and ABTS methods, IC50=125.40±2.40 μg/mL and IC50=65.23±2.49 μg/mL, respectively. However, the ethyl acetate fraction possessed the strongest inhibitory effect towards α-Glucosidase (IC50=1.112±0.026 mg/mL). Furthermore, the result showed high levels of phenolic content. The results showed that this plant could be a significant source of medically important natural compounds.

Food raw materials and products contain inhibitors of oxidation reactions, both in the lipidic phase and the aqueous phase. The most important inhibitors are phenolic antioxidants. During food processing and storage, concentrations of antioxidants in the two phases reach an equilibrium. Phenolics react with lipidic free radicals, being converted into antioxidant free radicals, quinones, polymers and copolymers. Some degradation products possess an antioxidant activity, too. The relative antioxidant activity decreases with decreasing concentration of oxygen in the system and with increasing temperature. Antioxidants are more rapidly decomposed in surface layers. Health aspects of antioxidant degradation products are often neglected as the safety of antioxidant degradation products is mostly unknown.
