The study aimed to investigate and evaluate the oxidative stability of chicken thighs with skin stored in freezing conditions due to the effect of oregano essential oil for various times. The results were compared with a control group without the use of oregano essential oil. Samples of chicken thighs with skin were obtained from an experiment performed on a poultry farm in a deep litter breeding system. The results obtained from the application of oregano essential oil to chicken thighs with skin did not show a statistically significant difference (p >0.05) in the dry matter content, fat content and acid value compared to the control group, where coccidiostats were used in starter and growth feed mixtures. A statistically significant difference was found in the peroxide value by applying oregano essential oil to chicken thighs with skin compared to a control group containing coccidiostats in starter and growth feed mixtures when stored for 1 day at room temperature (p £0.01) and 12 months in freezing conditions at -18 °C (p £0.05) and a statistically non-significant difference (p >0.05) when thighs with skin were stored for 6 and 9 months in -18 °C freezing conditions. In the conclusion, it was stated that maintaining the oxidative stability of chicken meat means knowing the factors that affect it and prepare the conditions for its maintenance. Chicken meat is generally susceptible to oxidative damage because it is characterized by a high concentration of polyunsaturated fatty acids. With a sufficient amount of effective antioxidants, chicken meat could be a homoeostatic system, but it remains limited or free of oxidized compounds and reactive components. These questions are the subject of further research in the field of oxidative stability of chicken meat.

This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of Origanum vulgare L. Hirtum essential oil on the oxidation stability of raw chicken meat. Oregano essential oil was applied in a different way, on the one hand in a feed for broiler chickens (E1) and on the other hand on a surface of chicken thighs (E2). Broiler chickens were fed during the experimental period in the all groups with commercial feed mixtures except the experimental group of E1 (with the addition of 0.05% oregano essential oil, 50 g EO per 100 g of the feed mixture). In E2 was application of oregano essential oil (0.5%) on surface of thighs 1 mL per 60 g of meat realized. The oxidative stability of the chicken meat was investigated in the same way, 8th days after vacuum-packed and stored at temperature 4 °C and 6, 9 and 12 months after vacuum-packed and storage at -18 °C. The samples of the E1 consisted of breast and thigh muscles with skin (150 g) and of the E2 thigh muscle with skin (60 g). The impact of oregano essential oil was measured by content of fat and peroxide value (PV). Fat content in both experiments was not affected by storage time and EO addition. Content of chicken meat fat in E1 in control group ranged between M = 9.64 – 12.95 g.100 g-1 and in experimental group contained similar amount of fat mean from M = 9.94 – 12.24 g.100 g-1; E2: in control group M = 7.01 – 7.73 g.100 g-1 and in experimental group M = 6.15 – 8.03 g.100 g-1. Measured peroxide values confirm that oregano essential oil has effect on broiler chicken meat oxidative stability, if applied to feed, manifested statistically significant differences between control and experimental group. The mean of peroxide value in control group of E1 was M = 0.58 –3.60 µmol O2.kg-1 and in experimental group was M = 1.06 – 2.11 µmol O2.kg-1. We found not statistically significant difference in peroxide values, if applied oregano essential oil to raw chicken meat. The results impact of oregano essential oil on chicken meat comparable to control group, but a tendency to improve oxidative stability was indicated.

Abstract Background: The tick Haemaphysalis longicornis is well known as vector of several zoonotic pathogens responsible for various clinical conditions, increasingly threatens the veterinary and public health. It is mainly distributed in East Asia, New Zealand, Australia, and several Pacific islands, and has been expanded rapidly in United States since its first founding on a nonimported domestic sheep in New Jersey. Glutathione S-transferases (GSTs) are phase II detoxification enzymes, which function via combining with pesticidal molecules and catalyzing the conjugation of molecules by thiol of glutathione, so as to protect tissues from oxidative stress damage. In the tick H. longicornis, glutathione S-transferases (HlGST and HlGST2) have been previously identified. However, the relationship between the expression of glutathione S-transferases and the essential oil treatment in ticks remains unexplored. Hence, in the present study, the expression profiles of HlGST and HlGST2 mRNAs were evaluated in H. longicornis after exposure to Cymbopogon citratus essential oil. Results: At 24 h post-exposure of H. longicornis to different sublethal concentrations of C. citratus essential oil, ANOVA results revealed significant difference (F2,6 = 55.94, P = 0.0001) in the expression of HlGST. Tukey’s test showed that HlGST was significantly induced after treatment with 1% C. citratus essential oil (P = 0.0002); whereas no significant difference (P = 0.3551) was detected after treated by 2% C. citratus essential oil. No significant difference (F2,6 = 0.8990, P = 0.4555) in the expression of HlGST2 between the treatment and the control group of 50% ethanol. Nevertheless, the under-expression of HlGST2 in the treatment groups versus the untreated control group was not significant (F3,8 = 2.643, P = 0.1208). Conclusion: The results implied that GST mRNA is a potential molecular target for C. citratus essential oil in H. longicornis. Further understanding of the underlying mechanisms of the GST at the molecular level could contribute to develop effective control measures for ticks and tick-borne diseases.

The study to improve the quality of Indonesia betel leaves oil is done by treatment of citric acid and sodium carbonate. The treatment showed that the iron content and acid value were reduced optimally in the addition of 5% (w/w) citric acid (12 hours, 50oC) and 5% (w/w) sodium carbonate (9 hours, 50oC) yielded 0.45 mg/L of iron content and 1.00 mg/g of acid value, respectively. The main component of Indonesia betel leaves oil are 4-allyl phenylacetate. The descriptive sensory analysis showed that there were differences between betel leaves oil from Bogor compared with Boyolali and Makassar. There is a significant difference that the content of betel leaves oil from Bogor contains an isoeugenol compound of 20.71% while, Boyolali and Makassar contain eugenol of 17.02 and 19.21%, respectively. The study of the insect repellency indicated that Indonesia betel leaves oil potentially used as mosquito of Aedes aegypti repellent.

AbstractBackgroundAnxiety is the most common psychological reaction in women during labor. Similar to numerous other surgeries, postoperative pain is also reported following cesarean section (C-section). According to the (Gate) Control Theory, there is a relationship between pain and psychological problems such as anxiety. Accordingly, the present study aimed to compare the effect of aromatherapy using lavender and Damask rose essential oils on the level of anxiety and severity of pain following C-section.MethodsThis triple-group randomized clinical trial was performed on 90 mothers who visited Motahari Hospital of Jahrom, Iran, for C-section in 2017. The incidence and severity of pain and anxiety were measured and recorded for all three groups prior to intervention. The intervention groups underwent aromatherapy with lavender and Damask rose essential oils. Patients were asked to inhale cotton balls, separately stained with three drops of each essential oil at a distance of 10 cm for 30 mins. The severity of pain and anxiety was measured using the visual analogue scale (VAS) and the Spielberger State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI) 5 min after the specified process, respectively. The control group underwent aromatherapy in a similar fashion with normal saline. Finally, data were analyzed using descriptive statistical indices and ANOVA and Kruskal–Wallis tests in SPSS 21.ResultsThere was no significant difference between the three groups in the mean severity of pain and anxiety before the intervention (p>0.05). The mean severity of pain and overt anxiety in the lavender and Damask rose aromatherapy groups was significantly different than the control group after the intervention (p<0.001). In addition, no significant difference was observed between the overt and overall anxiety levels of the two intervention groups after the intervention (p>0.05).ConclusionsThe findings suggested that inhalation aromatherapy can reduce the severity of overt anxiety and pain after C-section, with Damask rose essential oil showing a larger effect than lavender.

Abstract In this study, we aimed to investigate epidemiologic factors in children with Acute Lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL). The parents of 105 children diagnosed and treated as ALL between the years 1997 –2007 in our Clinic of Pediatric Hematology-Oncology were questioned and results were compared with control group that consisted of 102 healthy children with similar age and gender. The mean age of the patients was 8.57 ± 3.95 years. The mean age at diagnosis was 5.87 ± 3.73 years. There was no significant difference between the groups in terms of type of delivery, birth weight, asphyxia at birth, resuscitation with high-concentration oxygen and ventilatory support (p&gt;0.05). There was also no significant difference between the groups in terms of duration of breast feeding. The rate of exposure to infections prior to diagnosis was higher in control group (p:0.003). Besides that, the rate of going to nursery was also significantly higher in control group (p:0.014). There was no difference between the groups in terms of X-ray exposure (p&gt;0.05). In conclusion over-protection from infectious agents in and delay in meeting with some specific agents seems to increase ALL risk. Infections in early infantile period can be protective against leukemia. There has to be more extended studies on this subject.
