The extracts derived from Terminalia catappa leaves and fruit following antioxidant activity directed isolation, were screened for their antioxidant activity through their ability to scavenge DPPH radicals. Only fractions which exhibited >50% DPPH scavenging effect at each step of isolation were selected for further purification and judge their ability to reduce peroxide formation (peroxide value) in heated corn oil. The results indicated that crude ethanolic extract, aqueous fraction of crude extract and its sub fractions (petroleum ether and ethylacetate) possessed prominent antioxidant activity. In addition, phytochemical analysis showed that the five fractions obtained finally contain simple phenols, anthocyanins, phenyl propanoids and flavanols.

The present study investigated the phytochemistry and antioxidant activity of Pterocarpus angolensis (Mubvamaropa) from Mupandawana. Pt. angolensis has numerous medicinal uses. The bark, sap, leaves and roots are all used to treat different ailments. The sap is used to stop nose bleeds, treatment of ulcers and kill ringworms. Several studies have supported the use of the tree’s sap to treat cataracts, malaria as well as skin inflammations. Pterocarpus angolensis bark was collected from Gutu, Masvingo province and authenticated by a plant taxonomist at the Zimbabwe National herbarium (Mr Chapano). The bark was cleaned using distilled water and oven dried at 40°C for 4 hours to constant weight. Size reduction was achieved using a Thomas-Wiley laboratory mill model with a 2 mm sieve mesh. The phytochemical analysis revealed that the ethanolic extract had more phyto-constituents than the water extract which only four phyto-constituents present all of which were weakly positive. DPPH scavenging activity was 95.11% at a concentration of 500 μg/mL bark extract, while that of the control, ascorbic acid, was 97.60%. Ascorbic acid had an IC50 value of 4.35 µg/mL while the bark extract had a value of 150.64 µg/mL.

Salsola cyclophylla, an edible halophyte, is traditionally used for inflammation and pain. To confirm the claimed anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties, a detailed study on respective pharmacological actions was undertaken. The activities are contemplated to arise from its phytoconstituents. The LC-MS analysis of S. cyclophylla 95% aqueous-ethanolic extract revealed the presence of 52 compounds belonging to phenols, flavonoids, coumarins, and aliphatics class. A high concentration of Mn, Fe, and Zn was detected by atomic absorption spectroscopic analysis. The ethyl acetate extract showed the highest flavonoid contents (5.94 ± 0.04 mg/g, Quercetin Equivalents) and Fe2+-chelation (52%) potential with DPPH radicals-quenching IC50 at 1.35 ± 0.16 mg/mL, while the aqueous ethanolic extract exhibited maximum phenolics contents (136.08 ± 0.12 mg/g, gallic acid equivalents) with DPPH scavenging potential at IC50 0.615 ± 0.06 mg/mL. Aqueous ethanolic extract and standard quercetin DPPH radicals scavenging’s were equal potent at 10 mg/mL concentrations. The aqueous ethanolic extract showed highest analgesic effect with pain reduction rates 89.86% (p = 0.03), 87.50% (p < 0.01), and 99.66% (p = 0.0004) after 60, 90, and 120 min, respectively. Additionally, aqueous ethanolic extract exhibited the highest anti-inflammation capacity at 41.07% (p < 0.0001), 34.51% (p < 0.0001), and 24.82% (p < 0.0001) after 2, 3, and 6 h of extract’s administration, respectively. The phytochemical constituents, significant anti-oxidant potential, remarkable analgesic, and anti-inflammatory bioactivities of extracts supported the traditionally claimed anti-inflammatory and analgesic plant activities.

The presented work represents phytochemical analysis, Antioxidant assay and Antimicrobial activity of Bhut jolokia pepper (Capsicum chinense Jacq) extracted by ethanol as solvent. The ethanolic extract of Bhut jolokia pepper showed the presence of terpenoids, steroids, saponins and flavonoids. Antimicrobial assay was done with varying concentration (250-1000µg/ml) of pepper extract using tetracycline as control by well diffusion method, the extract at 750µg/ml shown best inhibition zone and Staphylococcus aureus showed the highest zone of inhibition at all concentration compared to other bacteria species with maximum zone of inhibition of 27mm. The DPPH scavenging assay for antioxidant activity at 517nm showed positive activity for scavenging, scavenging increased with the concentration of extract. Thus, Bhut jolokia could be effective in treating diseases caused by Staphylococcus aureus from antimicrobial assay result.

Oxidative stress plays a major role in diabetic physiopathology; hence, the interest of using natural antioxidants as therapeutic tools exists. The aim of this study was the evaluation of in vitro antioxidant activity and inhibitory potential of organic extracts from Aristolochia longa roots against key enzymes linked to hyperglycemia. Antioxidant activity was performed using 2,2′-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and 2,2-azino-bis-3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid (ABTS) radicals and ferric reducing/antioxidant power (FRAP) methods. The α-Glucosidase and β-Galactosidase inhibitory activities were investigated using an in vitro model. Moreover, phytochemical analysis of tested extracts was carried out. The aqueous fraction of this herb exhibited the highest antioxidant activity for both DPPH and ABTS methods, IC50=125.40±2.40 μg/mL and IC50=65.23±2.49 μg/mL, respectively. However, the ethyl acetate fraction possessed the strongest inhibitory effect towards α-Glucosidase (IC50=1.112±0.026 mg/mL). Furthermore, the result showed high levels of phenolic content. The results showed that this plant could be a significant source of medically important natural compounds.

The antioxidant activity of Polyrhachis vicina wine extract was investigated: The IC50 of scavenging effect on superoxide radical generated by Pyrogallol autoxidation was 0.37 mg/mL; the maximum scavenging rate was 81.4%. The IC50 of scavenging effect on hydroxyl free radical generated by Fenton reaction was 0.66 mg/mL; the maximum scavenging rate was 91.8%. The IC50 of DPPH· scavenging effect was 0.48 mg/mL; the maximum scavenging rate was 91.4%. The results indicated that Polyrhachis vicina wine extract showed activity both in scavenging free radicals and antioxidation.

Medicinal activities of Thymus vulgaris L. were studied in the underlying research which was conducted in University of Central Punjab, Lahore. The powdered plant sample was collected and subjected to extraction and filtration by dissolving it in seven different solvents and thus the fractions obtained, were used for further analysis. The qualitative and quantitative analysis was carried out which revealed that this plant contained many biologically active compounds like saponin, alkaloids etc. These compounds have enormous bioactive roles. Antimicrobial activity was also determined in which four bacterial strains were used and the susceptibility of all the fractions of plant extract was determined by their inhibition zones which were calculated in mm. The results showed that water and chloroform extracts of plant has highest activity. The antioxidant activity was also determined by DPPH scavenging assay for which different concentrations of all plant extracts were made and their absorbance was noted to measure the percentage inhibition of each concentration, which revealed that this plant has significant antioxidant activity. The results have been represented using statistical approach that revealed that T. vulgaris plant has significant antibacterial and anti-oxidant activities and phytochemical analysis also proved that it has many useful compounds which have voluminous biological activity and these could be used in the formation of novel drugs.

Objective: The objective of this study was to evaluate the nature of chemical constituents, total phenolics, total flavonoids, and antioxidant activity of Cleome gynandra and their functional groups with the help of phytochemical, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) analysis, colorimetric assay, and 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) free radical scavenging assay. Methods: C. gynandra of the Cleomaceae family is an annual herb. The dried leaves were powdered and extracted using Soxhlet apparatus by different solvents. Preliminary phytochemical analysis was carried out to identify the phytoconstituents present in the extract of C. gynandra, FTIR spectrum was scanned at the range of 4000-400 cm−1. The extracts were subjected to the colorimetric assay in triplicate manner to quantitative determination of total phenolic and total flavonoid content. Gallic acid and rutin used as standards to determine the total phenolic content and total flavonoid content. Antioxidant activity was evaluated using DPPH radical scavenging method. Results: Phytochemical analysis of the ethanolic extract of C. gynandra revealed the presence of alkaloids, phenolics, saponins, steroids, flavonoids, cardiac glycosides, and tannins. FTIR spectrum showed intense bands at 3679.18, 3616.63, 3317.34, 2943.67, 1634.01, 1360.20, 1036.71, and 778.04 cm−1 corresponding to N-H2, O-H stretch, aliphatic C-H stretch, C=O, C-H benzene, C-O stretch, and C-Cl. The total phenolic content was found to be 8.39 ± 0.0952 mg gallic acid equivalent/g and 66.76 ± 0.0333 mg rutin equivalent/g. The DPPH radical scavenging activity of ethanolic extract was showed more scavenging activity compared to ethyl acetate and n-hexane fractions. Conclusion: The present research work creates a platform to screen many bioactive chemical constituents present in C. gynandra to treat various diseases.

The present work aimed to analyze the alkaloid content of the ethanolic extract ofTabernaemontana catharinensis(Apocynaceae family) and its fractions as well as to evaluate their antioxidant and anticholinesterasic activities. The analyses of the ethanolic extract ofT. catharinensisby mass spectrometry allowed identifying the presence of the alkaloids 16-epi-affinine, coronaridine-hydroxyindolenine, voachalotine, voacristine-hydroxyindolenine, and 12-methoxy-n-methyl-voachalotine, as well as an alkaloid withm/z385.21 whose spectrum suggests a derivative of voacristine or voacangine. The extract and its alkaloid rich fractions showed antioxidant activity, especially those that contain the alkaloidm/z385.21 or 16-epi-affinine with DPPH scavenging activity (IC50) between 37.18 and 74.69 μg/mL. Moreover, the extract and its fractions exhibited anticholinesterasic activity, particularly the fractions characterized by the presence of 12-methoxy-n-methyl-voachalotine, with IC50= 2.1 to 2.5 μg/mL. Fractions with 16-epi-affinine combined good antioxidant (IC50= 65.59 to 74.69 μg/mL) and anticholinesterasic (IC50= 7.7 to 8.3 μg/mL) activities, representing an option for further studies aimed at treating neurodegenerative diseases.

Abstract Phytochemical analysis of the antioxidant ethanolic extract of Alternanthera tenella Colla led to the isolation of six flavonoids, acacetin 8-C-[α-ʟ-rhamnopyranosyl-(1→2)-β-ᴅ-glucopyranoside] (1), 2″-O-α-ʟ-rhamnopyranosyl-vitexin (2), 2″-O-β-d-glucopyranosyl-vitexin (3), vitexin (4), quercetin (5) and kaempferol (6). All the structures were established by ESIMS and NMR spectroscopic methods. Antioxidant capacity of extract, fractions and isolated compounds was determined using the oxygen radical absorbance capacity (ORAC) assay and extract, fractions and flavonoids isolated showed antioxidant activity in vitro. Moreover, the total soluble phenolic contents of the extract and fractions were measured using the Folin- Ciocalteau reagent and the quantitative analysis of flavone C-glycosides major constituents was performed by HPLC

Thaumatoccocus daniellii Benn (Benth.) is an organic food wrapper that influences the color and flavour of most foods processed and packaged with it. Hence, this study was designed to evaluate the phytochemical constituent and antioxidant activity of T. daniellii leave. Quantitative phytochemical analysis was carried out using standard procedures while antioxidant activity was assayed using 2’,2’diphenylpicrylhydrazine (DPPH) and ferric ion reducing antioxidant potential (FRAP). Results showed that T. daniellii leaves contained flavonoids, polyphenols, alkaloids and saponins. Furthermore, aqueous leaf fraction had higher quantity of polyphenols (0.41 ± 0.1 mg% gallic acid) and flavonoids (0.28 ± 0.1 mg% quercetin) than polyphenols (0.23 ± 0.3 mg% gallic acid) and flavonoids (0.11 ± 0.1 mg% quercetin) in hexane leaf fraction. Investigation of antioxidant activity revealed that 100 - 500 mg/ml aqueous leaf fraction exhibited a significantly (P<0.05) higher DPPH radical scavenging activity than the hexane leaf fraction. In addition, the aqueous fraction of T. daniellii leaves exhibited a significantly (P<0.05) higher ferric ion reducing potential than hexane leaf fraction. Thus, data from this study indicated that T. daniellii leaves color and flavour enhancing properties could be attributed to the presence of polyphenols and flavonoids. In addition, its use as food wrapper may introduce phyto-antioxidants into foods processed and packaged with T. daniellii leaves.
