e20715 Background: The therapeutic options in tumour treatment protocols include a maximum of tumour cell reduction and at the same time a minimum of side effects in order to secure a good quality of life for the cancer patient. Temporary side effects have been accepted in relation to the benefit risk calculation. A questionnaire for cancer patients was developed to improve the management of side effects of the cancer treatment, to optimize the patient-doctor communication and to register individual problems of the patient. Methods: Cancer patients received a questionnaire with 25 items and were asked for their problems during or after the last tumour specific treatment before having the consultation with the doctor. Gender, age, Karnofsky-index and treatment protocol were additional registered. During September 2007 until December 2007 a total of 272 questionnaires could be collected. The qualitative items have been evaluated with the contigens table method and the parameter free x2 test (Chi-Square-Test). Results: More than 50% of the patients documented additional important points influencing their well being. Nearly all of the evaluated patients had some tumour therapy specific side effects. The most pronounced problem was the physical exhaustion in 71% of the evaluated patients. More than 50% were influenced in their quality of life by more than normal fatigue since the start of their tumour specific therapy. Significant differences could be evaluated in relation to the age, diagnosis and tumour therapy with respect to the symptoms. Conclusions: The questionnaire was be found to be a good method to improve the communication between the patient and the doctor. It was easier to point out individual problems for the patient. The care givers can focus more precisely on important side effects of the tumour specific therapy in order to improve the quality of life of the treated patient. No significant financial relationships to disclose.

To determine the effect of continuing nursing on self-care ability and nursing satisfaction of patients undergoing resection of rectal cancer (RC), a total of 130 patients undergoing resection of RC who were diagnosed and treated in our hospital from April 2018 to May 2019 were enrolled. Among them, 62 patients nursed under the routine nursing mode for advanced RC were assigned to Group A, and other 68 patients nursed under continuing nursing mode based on the routine nursing for patients undergoing resection of RC were assigned to Group B. The two groups were compared in mental health, emotional state, life quality, and self-care ability before and after nursing care during hospitalization and after 2 months of follow-up visit, and they were also compared in nursing satisfaction, status on discharge, and complications. After nursing care. Group B got notably lower scores of self-rating anxiety scale (SAS) ans self-rating depression scale (SDS) than Group A (both P<0.001), and showed much better compliance than Group A (P<0.001). The quality of life scale (QOL-C30) scores in physical health, mental health, material life, and social function of Group B were all notably higher than those of Group A (all P<0.001). Additionally, after nursing care. Group B got notably higher scores of self-care ability than Group A (all P<0.001), and showed notably higher nursing satisfaction than Group A (P<0.05). Group B experienced shorter hospitalization than Group A, but there was no significant difference between them during the periods of 10 d-15 d, 16 d-21 d and 22 d-3 Od (all P>0.05). Moreover, after nursing care, the incidence of complications in Group B was notably lower than that in Group A (P<0.05). Continuing nursing can provide better results of improving the emotion and life quality of patients undergoing resection of RC based on routine nursing, and it can reduce the occurrence of postoperative complications on such patients to a certain extent.

AbstractThe primary objectives of nurses caring for the immunosuppressed patient are to create a safe, peaceful environment and to promote the quality of the patient's life. Strengthening the patient's defense mechanisms is inherent in these nursing objectives, and the nurse must have certain competencies to reinforce these defense mechanisms. One competency is a thorough understanding of the immunosuppressed patient. The infection control practitioner (ICP) should assist the nurse in understanding what an immunosuppressed patient is, what his risk of infection is, what his reaction to infection might be, and what isolation practices are appropriate. Another necessary nursing skill is proficiency in patient assessment, not only when the patient is admitted, but on a continuous basis since the patient's status can change so rapidly. Finally the nurse must have the ability to implement appropriate nursing measures. The nurse must use the principles of asepsis in all patient care activities, recognize risk factors of infection, and understand the importance of such details as proper nutrition, oral hygiene, and skin care. Psychological support is also an essential part of the nursing care plan.Nursing care affects the well-being of the immunosuppressed patient and infection control practitioners have a role in ascertaining that nurses know how to treat such patients appropriately.

The stressors experienced by families caring for children and youth with developmental disabilities (DD) impact quality of life for all family members. Families employ creative practices to cope and thrive in the midst of such challenges. This study sought to understand the adaptive practices, tactics, and strategies engaged in by parents. We interviewed 39 parents of 46 children and youth with DD in Canada. Thematic analysis elucidated three categories of adaptations and twelve tactics and strategic actions at three ecological levels: within the system—adapting with everyday tactics and strategies; within our family—constructing spaces of care; within myself—adjusting perceptions of adversity. Our critical interpretation highlights an ecology of parental labor across varying psychosocial and health care service contexts in which parents strive to make a good life for their children and families. Nurses can empower and enhance their well-being by conducting holistic assessments and targeted family nursing interventions.

Objective In this study, we aimed to explore the effect of continuous nursing care on children with pneumonia, including patient survival and quality of life. Methods We included 90 children with pneumonia who were admitted to our hospital from May 2017 to June 20, 2017. We established two patient groups (45 children per group); the routine group received general care and the continuous group received continuous nursing care. We observed the correlation among nursing effectiveness, clinical symptom improvement, quality of life, satisfaction, and complications. Results Our results showed that effectiveness in the continuous care group was 95.55%, significantly higher than that in the routine group (75.55%). Duration of hypothermia (1.75 ± 0.65 days), time to cough remission (4.24 ± 1.12 days), time to rale remission (4.15 ± 0.89 days), and time to remission of shortness of breath (2.65 ± 0.65 days) in the continuous group was shorter than those in the routine group. The incidence of total complications in the continuous group was 8.89%, which was significantly lower than that in the routine group (26.67%). The continuous care group showed greater improvement after intervention. Conclusion Continuous care in children with pneumonia can help to reduce illness severity, pain, heart and lung failure, and serve to avoid medical disputes.

This number represents the third publication of volume 12 of the official publication of the Brazilian Association of Medicine and Surgery of the Foot and Ankle. Is already released for on-line consultation (anticipated), to the extent that the volume of articles makes possible the optimization of our services. This brings benefits to authors and readers but increases the need to observe the guidelines that govern the formatting and execution of the scientific articles. It is an activity that counts with the collaboration of individuals trained to observe and apply the rigor of the technical standards of scientific publication. What is certain is that we must remain vigilant and accustomed ourselves with the specifics of the scientific production, and the planning of the methods of data collection and the subsequentanalysis of them. The submission of this protocol to the analysis of the ethics committees in research is what will give the endorsement so that it can execute it and, at the end, publish it. It becomes necessary that we are used to the rigor of the required procedures. In this sense, it is important that the sources of research funding are properly pointed out and that the results are adequately informed. The motivation to publish is directly associated with the desire to provide a high contribution to the technical-scientific knowledge on the surgery of the foot and ankle. We should alsohighlight the need to extend the training centers of orthopedists trainers’ and specialized in surgery of the foot and ankle, therefore, ensure the quality of our publications, based on rigid ethical, technical and scientific training. This edition brings a variety of articles that provides the surgeon of the foot and ankle a broad overview of the potential of our specialty, showing the regional differences and indicating what is open to all who are interested in study, teach, and reach a higher step in the actions for the well-being of our society. The members of our ABTPé have already demonstrated the ability to promote events that are of great importance for the diffusion of knowledge. The moment requires synergistic action to achieve the ideals pursued. Have all a great read. Jorge Mitsuo MizusakiEditor-in-Chief
