</p> <p>&nbsp;</p><p>Minahasa is a prosperous Protestant region with a sizeable Muslim population, and other religious minorities in North Sulawesi province in Indonesia. It prides itself as the compass of religious tolerance. However, territorially distant from Java Island, as the center of Indonesian geopolitics, and vastly outnumbered by the majority Muslim population, the Christian Minahasans keep a guarded feeling toward Indonesian national center. Questioning and exploring the notion of nationhood by the Minahasans, this work engage with Adrian Hasting&rsquo;s thesis in crediting religion and ethnicity to the foundation of nationalism (1997). Applying a qualitative approach, this study found that poly-ethnicity, religion and distinct historical and political background are the determining factors in the construction of nationhood as well as the sense of belonging of Minahasans to the larger Indonesian nationalism.</p> <p>&nbsp;</p>

In recent years, North American and European nations have sought to legally remake religion in other countries through an unprecedented array of international initiatives. Policymakers have rallied around the notion that the fostering of religious freedom, interfaith dialogue, religious tolerance, and protections for religious minorities are the keys to combating persecution and discrimination. This book argues that these initiatives create the very social tensions and divisions they are meant to overcome. It looks at three critical channels of state-sponsored intervention: international religious freedom advocacy, development assistance and nation building, and international law. It shows how these initiatives make religious difference a matter of law, resulting in a divide that favors forms of religion authorized by those in power and excludes other ways of being and belonging. In exploring the dizzying power dynamics and blurred boundaries that characterize relations between “expert religion,” “governed religion,” and “lived religion,” the book charts new territory in the study of religion in global politics. The book provides new insights into today's most pressing dilemmas of power, difference, and governance.

The purpose of this study is to describe the inability of Catholic education institutions on funding school operations especially regarding teacher salaries in Medan. The main task of the teacher is to do educational assignments. Even though it is not optimal, the cooperation and commitment of all parties involved, especially the institution and the school parties are needed in terms of designing and realizing various collaborative efforts with the church and parents, so that new students will grow in Catholic schools. This study is conducted by using descriptive qualitative approach. The result shows that there is no good achievement without hard work and sacrifice and also a good work approach strategy. Therefore there must be good meetings that create a positive attitude and a sense of belonging to the school, where if the school is successfully developed, all parties will feel the benefits.

This paper investigates the choices of second person terms of address in the Malay culture. It examines the different patterns of address terms used in a range of communicative situations by interlocutors coming from diverse social backgrounds. The data for this study was obtained from two Malay dramas Ijab & Qabul (The solemnization of marriage) and Tiga Hari Menanti Mati (Three Days Until Death). These dramas were selected because they reflect in the usage of terms of address in an authentic social context of the Malay culture and represent various interpersonal relationships in a range of situations. This is a descriptive study with a qualitative approach. Forty-eight different second person terms of address were recorded and analysed in specific contexts based on the framework for classifying address terms established by Kroger, Wood and Kim (1984). The findings suggest that sociolinguistic elements such as interlocutors, contexts, determinants of interpersonal relationship, and intentions were determining factors influencing the choice of second person terms of address in the Malay culture. These findings have implications on the understanding of current trends in choosing the terms of address among Malay speakers.

Individualisation theory has mainly focused on the deregulation of religion and dissolution of traditional majority churches, but there is less evidence of its appropriateness for religious minorities. In this paper I contribute to this debate by analysing how Jews in Spain construct their Jewish sense of belonging in the context of a diverse, traditionally Catholic society. My main argument is that Jews, as a small and invisible minority, confronted by the exigencies of a secular and plural context, combine notions of religious choice and ethnic ascription in narrating their individual and collective identities. Consequently, while the theory of individualisation partly accounts for this identity construction, the specificities of the context and the minority condition require additional conceptual tools about collective identities and symbolic boundaries.

ABSTRACT Purpose: to check the understanding of elderly participants of a singing group on the promotion of voice health. Methods: a qualitative approach linked to Paulo Freire's research itinerary consisting of three dialectic moments: thematic investigation; encoding and decoding; critical revelation. Results: these stages were developed in four culture circles with the participation of six elderly people. The study showed three themes: (1) Expression and feelings, (2) Potentiality and difficulty, (3) Voice care. The circles brought expression of ideas and practices to voice care. The sense of belonging that the group provides could be observed, especially on emotional issues. The elderly empowered themselves to discuss their beliefs regarding voice care, clarified during culture circles, providing subsidies for a greater autonomy in their personal life. Conclusion: the dialog between the participants made the understanding possible on the role of voice, permeating aspects related to the physiology, functionality and emotion in the participants' perception.

The diversity of cultures, races, ethnic groups, and religions has great potential to cause conflict. This condition indicates that the nationalism values of in the community decreased. Is religion and faith in today’s economically and culturally globalized modern society just a conservative experience, tradition, and sentiment, or an anthropological universal, the primary essence of every individual and collective identity and a practical tool for realizing spiritual, cultural, and social needs? The community’s culture, religion, and ethnicity are most significant in contrast (or on the border) with others. The existence of minorities is determined by their being defined against the majority and characterized by differences. Contemporary Slovak communities living abroad, such as ethnic, cultural, and religious minorities, are a compelling object of research into the relationship between culture, religion, and ethnicity. Our paper examines the role this relationship plays in their identification, cultural, and revitalization processes.
