Purpose The purpose of this paper is to identify the best practices of industrial engineering (IE) programs that could be learnt and used at other educational institutions. Design/methodology/approach Nine IE programs in the USA are benchmarked using a conceptual framework that considers an educational program as a system consisting of a purpose, a curriculum, resources, and quality processes. The information used in benchmarking is collected from the program self-study reports, course catalogs, and websites which are available on the internet. Findings It is found that in spite of their diversity in history, missions, sizes, and reputations, the studied programs are rather unified in terms of purpose definition, curriculum formation, resource selection, and quality process usage. From the analysis, a template of IE curriculum is proposed. Research limitations/implications As the selection of the studied programs is based on the availability of the information, the findings may not be representative for IE programs in the USA. Future work can aim at comparing IE programs from various countries. Practical implications The findings could be used as benchmarks by IE schools interested in the improvement of operations. Originality/value A conceptual framework for benchmarking is proposed and proves useful for comparing educational programs. The findings represent the current best practices at IE schools in the USA.

Abstract In the article, some countries’ experience in organizing professional training and activities of probation officers has been analyzed. Based on comparative analysis of activities of the Probation Institute abroad, it has been determined that probation service has different functional and organizational features in individual countries. For instance, probation service in different countries is subordinate to different agencies. Thus, probation service in Great Britain, Denmark, Japan, Finland, Norway, Latvia, the Czech Republic and Estonia is under the control of the Ministry of Justice; in the USA, Germany, Hungary, it is subordinate to the judiciary; in the Netherlands – public prosecutor’s office; in Sweden – prison authorities; in Singapore, probation service is under the guidance of the Ministry of Community Development and Sports. Another difference consists in the fact that in some countries the law defines probation as punishment (Sweden, Finland, Latvia), whereas in other countries it refers to some criminal measures (Great Britain), exemption from punishment (Estonia) or is not determined at all (the USA). Despite the differences, the goals and means of achieving them in each probation service are similar in the context of criminal law. The approaches to professional training of probation officers have been analyzed and relevant conclusions have been drawn regarding organization of probation officers’ professional training in Ukraine. In particular, work with offenders should be performed by highly qualified specialists who have a degree and who have passed specialized training courses in educational institutions subordinate to probation authorities. It is important that the content of probation officers’ professional training should be constantly updated, taking into account new approaches and methods of working with convicts, which are recognized as effective.

This article considers the formation of interdisciplinary links at senior schoolchildren through their interest in cybersport. In the introduction the authors explain that it is impossible to imagine modern life without digital technologies. Cybersport is becoming more and more popular and it is hardly possible to ignore this interest in educational purposes. The relevance of the subject is defined by the requirement of the Federal State Standard which writes that it is necessary to form interdisciplinary competences. The article gives the analysis of educational institutions which are introducing the program of cybersport and provides some examples of the universities in the USA, Norway, Sweden and Russia. The material of the investigation is the regulations restricting cybersport in school education, articles on educational website. The methods employed are the following: analysis, synthesis, modeling. The results of the investigation show that great interest in cybersport within education lets us form universal learning actions taking into consideration senior schoolchildren’ interest and help to develop interdisciplinary and communicative skills. The authors come to the conclusion that the development of cybersport at schools is necessary because such digital educational environment can be means of formation of interdisciplinary ability of senior schoolchildren under the conditions of online studying.

The authors set out the importance of the inter-relationship between engineering education and practice, in the context of the US Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology's Engineering Criteria 2000. They suggest that cooperative education can play a key role in filling the gap between theory and application in the teaching of engineering students, and point out that their proposals, although made in the specific context of the USA, have international relevance as the trend towards ‘globalization’ reduces national distinctions. The paper examines the learning needs of engineering students, lists the key challenges facing educational institutions, presents a model of the cooperative education process, and illustrates it with a case example of cooperative education in practice in the Electrical and Computer Engineering programme at Northeastern University.

In the national educational system of the Ukrainian diaspora of the USA and Canada the pre-school period covers the first stages of extra-familiar education, where establishing of child’s consciousness and connecting to spiritual values of the Ukrainian nation are taking place. Efficiency of this process depends on multiple factors. A significant role among them is played by didactic provision of educational-instructional process in pre-school educational institutions of various kinds whose main aim is to form national consciousness of the pupils through acquiring the Ukrainian language, as well as mastering contents of Ukrainian Studies subjects. Pedagogues at Ukrainian pre-school institutions in diaspora conditions clearly understand that the task of bringing up a child before the age of 6 implies providing them with various, beneficial for growing and useful for them, qualities. That is why teachers contribute to children acquiring such knowledge, abilities and skills which would help them to successfully prepare for elementary school in the future. Since the main task of Ukrainian pre-school education lies in development of a child’s personality by means of Ukrainian Culture studies, a pedagogue (teacher) has to know Ukrainian and all subjects well.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to combine previous research on deaf suspects with the findings from data gathered from law enforcement personnel nationwide to gain an understanding of the common practices of US law enforcement when arresting, interrogating and communicating with deaf suspects. Design/methodology/approach In light of the limited amount of research available on handling deaf suspects, a two-part sampling approach was used. Using critical case sampling, the author surveyed law enforcement via open-ended surveys designed to solicit information about their involvement with deaf suspects and any related questions and concerns. Guided by the Wave 1 data, Wave 2 surveys were administered to law enforcement nationwide (using expert sampling). Findings An analysis of the two waves of data collected was used to assemble the list of current practices. Originality/value This study combines previous research on deaf suspects, which has been published largely through the framework of deaf studies, with the insight of practitioners to identify a list of current practices used by US law enforcement when handling deaf suspects.

The higher educational institutions in the USA and some countries of Europe have already examined the careers of their alumni for more decades. This process has many positive signs: it makes the connections between the institutions and the alumni stronger, just like between the institutions and the labour market; in addition it attracts attention to the building and the possible changes. In Hungary the inauguration of the compulsory career-following-system was laid down in the Law of Higher Education in 2005 (2005/CXXXIX. act of the higher education). The career-following is very important for the Széchenyi István University, so is the utilization of its results. The inauguration of the career-following-system of the alumni (the Hungarian abbreviation, that will be used henceforth: DPR) in the higher education is voluntary. As far as the representativity is concerned, the universities and colleges have unfortunately problems in Hungary how to achieve their alumni and how to get them to cooperate. A successful institutional DPR needs live connections with the students over their study and after it as well.
