This study examined the nature and amount of feedback that more successful and less successful high school varsity volleyball coaches gave to their starting and nonstarting volleyball players. Two of the four coaches studied were considered more successful and two were considered less successful, based on previous regular season win-loss percentages. Players of all the coaches (N=41) were also used as subjects and identified as having either a starting or nonstarting role on the team. All subjects were observed on three occasions for 30 minutes per observation during regular season practice. The Cole Descriptive Analysis System (Cole-DAS) was used to observe coach augmented feedback as it was given to individual players in response to skilled performance. A 2 × 2 multivariate analysis of variance was used to describe the effects of (a) success of the coach, (b) role of the player, and (c) both success of the coach and role of the player on the dependent variables of coach augmented feedback. Results indicated that successful coaches varied considerably from less successful coaches in the types of feedback given to their players. Starting players were also found to receive significantly more audio, audiovisual, and immediate terminal feedback than nonstarting players.

Phenetic Analysis and Distribution of Claoxylon in the Lesser Sunda Islands. Floribunda 6(5): 167–174. — The genus Claoxylon A.Juss. in the Lesser Sunda Islands (LSI) was reviewed. Eleven species were recognized in Lesser Sunda Islands. Records of C. capillipes and C. fulvescens were extended to the Bali Island. Based on distribution of Claoxylon in LSI, Bali has the highest number of species (7 species), while Wetar shows the least number of species (only 1 species). A phenetic analysis was using Numerical Taxonomy and Multivariate Analysis System (NTSYS-pc) version 2.11a and distribution mapping using Quantum GIS version 2.4. Based on 14 morphological characters grouped Claoxylon species in LSI into three groups. All Claoxylon in LSI belong to section Indica and Affinia.

To investigate the effects of garment hue, garment value, and garment style on college recruiters' assessments of employment potential a 2 × 2 × 2 experimental design was used. Experimental conditions were based on recommendations from a commercial color analysis system to evaluate also the role of personal color analysis. Photographs were attached to questionnaires which contained seven employment potential statements. Factor analysis generated two employment potential factors, Leadership and Compatibility. Multivariate analysis of factor scores yielded a significant 2-way interaction for hue × value. Univariate F tests gave a significant effect for Compatibility. Generally, value appeared to have a greater influence on assessments of employment than did hue. There were no significant effects associated with style of garment. In addition, the results did not fully support the commercial color recommendations.

The objectives of this study were to
determine genetic and polymorphism level of the SSR markers Cameroon-
originated oil palm accessions. Genetic materials used were 49 Cameroon-
originated oil palm accessions collected at Sijunjung Oil Palm Germplam
Collection Station, West Sumatera. Genomic DNA was isolated using a
protocol for isolating DNA from leaves rich with latex. DNA was analyzed
using 20 SSR markers. A dendogram was constructed using the
Unweighted Pair Group Method Arithmetic (UPGMA) method through the
Numerical Taxonomy and Multivariate Analysis System software
(NTSYS-pc) version 2.1-pc. Results showed that the polimorfisme
information content (PIC) values of the SSR markers used was high, 0.80
(range from 0.63-0.91). The average number of the SSR alleles detected
was also high, 8.75 alleles (range from 4-15 alleles per SSR locus).
Phylogenetic analysis of the 49 oil palm accessions resulted genetic
diversity of 12.5-54.72% (genetic similarity of 55.28-87.50%). At genetic
diversity 54.72%, the 49 accessions were divided into seven clusters, each
consisted of 9, 28, 4, 2, 1, 2, and 3 accesions, respectively. Accessions
with high genetic diversity and located at different clusters may be useful
as parent candidates in the future oil palm breeding programs.
Key words: Elaeis guineensis Jacq., genetic diversity, germplasm, SSR
markers

If we make a set of measurements, such as narrow-band or multicolour photo-electric measurements, which are designed to improve a scheme of classification, and in particular if they are designed to extend the number of dimensions of classification, i.e. the number of classification parameters, then some important problems of analytical procedure arise. First, it is important not to reproduce the errors of the classification scheme which we are trying to improve. Second, when trying to extend the number of dimensions of classification we have little or nothing with which to test the validity of the new parameters.Problems similar to these have occurred in other areas of scientific research (notably psychology and education) and the branch of Statistics called Multivariate Analysis has been developed to deal with them. The techniques of this subject are largely unknown to astronomers, but, if carefully applied, they should at the very least ensure that the astronomer gets the maximum amount of information out of his data and does not waste his time looking for information which is not there. More optimistically, these techniques are potentially capable of indicating the number of classification parameters necessary and giving specific formulas for computing them, as well as pinpointing those particular measurements which are most crucial for determining the classification parameters.

Increased nuclear size, resulting in an increase in the relative proportion of nuclear to cytoplasmic sizes, is an important morphologic criterion for the evaluation of neoplastic and pre-neoplastic cells. This paper describes investigations into the suitability of automated image analysis for quantitating changes in nuclear and cytoplasmic cross-sectional areas in exfoliated cells from tracheas treated with carcinogen.Neoplastic and pre-neoplastic lesions were induced in the tracheas of Syrian hamsters with the carcinogen N-methyl-N-nitrosourea. Cytology samples were collected intra-tracheally with a specially designed catheter (1) and stained by a modified Papanicolaou technique. Three cytology specimens were selected from animals with normal tracheas, 3 from animals with dysplastic changes, and 3 from animals with epidermoid carcinoma. One hundred randomly selected cells on each slide were analyzed with a Bausch and Lomb Pattern Analysis System automated image analyzer.

We have assembled an image processing system for use with our high resolution STEM for the particular purpose of working with low dose images of biological specimens. The system is quite flexible, however, and can be used for a wide variety of images. The original images are stored on magnetic tape at the microscope using the digitized signals from the detectors. For low dose imaging, these are “first scan” exposures using an automatic montage system. One Nova minicomputer and one tape drive are dedicated to this task. The principal component of the image analysis system is a Lexidata 3400 frame store memory. This memory is arranged in a 640 x 512 x 16 bit configuration. Images are displayed simultaneously on two high resolution monitors, one color and one black and white. Interaction with the memory is obtained using a Nova 4 (32K) computer and a trackball and switch unit provided by Lexidata. The language used is BASIC and uses a variety of assembly language Calls, some provided by Lexidata, but the majority written by students (D. Kopf and N. Townes).

Much progress has been made in recent years towards the development of closed-loop foundry sand reclamation systems. However, virtually all work to date has determined the effectiveness of these systems to remove surface clay and metal oxide scales by a qualitative inspection of a representative sampling of sand particles. In this investigation, particles from a series of foundry sands were sized and chemically classified by a Lemont image analysis system (which was interfaced with an SEM and an X-ray energy dispersive spectrometer) in order to statistically document the effectiveness of a reclamation system developed by The Pangborn Company - a subsidiary of SOHIO.The following samples were submitted: unreclaimed sand; calcined sand; calcined & mechanically scrubbed sand and unused sand. Prior to analysis, each sample was sprinkled onto a carbon mount and coated with an evaporated film of carbon. A backscattered electron photomicrograph of a field of scale-covered particles is shown in Figure 1. Due to a large atomic number difference between sand particles and the carbon mount, the backscattered electron signal was used for image analysis since it had a uniform contrast over the shape of each particle.

Recent commercial microscopes with internal microprocessor control of all major functions have already demonstrated some of the benefits anticipated from such systems, such as continuous magnification, rotation-free diffraction and magnification, automatic recording of mutually registered focal series, and fewer control knobs. Complete automation of the focusing, stigmating and alignment of a high resolution microscope, allowing focal series to be recorded at preselected focus values as well, is still imminent rather than accomplished, however; some kind of image pick-up and analysis system, fed with the electron image via a TV camera, is clearly essential for this, but several alternative systems and algorithms are still being explored. This paper reviews the options critically in turn, and stresses the need to consider alignment and focusing at an early stage, and not merely as an optional extension to a basic proposal.
