Living with an ostomy: knowing for better caringAbstractThis is a descriptive study aiming to identify the changes caused by ostomy in ostomates’ daily lives. Complying with 196/96 resolution, eight ostomates were interviewed in a city in Rio Grande do Sul State/Brazil. Data were analyzed by the technique of Content Analysis. It was verified that these patients’ life perspective has changed. They need to adapt to the use of the equipment, so they fear the new situation. They have their self-image disrupted, their self-esteem diminished and their sexuality hindered; they lose control over their body and they feel stigmatized. Some people from their relations turn their back to them while others stand by them even more than they used to. It was evidenced that changes caused by ostomy are very complex, and it is important for nurses to understand them in order to provide a more effective, humanized and qualified care planning.

ABSTRACT The study aimed to reveal the recognition of the work and of its meanings in the perception of female recycling workers of a recycling cooperative. It is a qualitative, exploratory-descriptive study, undertaken with female recycling workers in a recycling cooperative in a municipality of the central region of the State of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. The data were produced through participant observation, semistructured interviews (held with seven women) and focus groups (with six women), between July and August 2013; the data were analyzed using content analysis. The results show that the dynamic of the recognition is complex and involves situations of valorization and of prejudice. The female workers elaborate individual and collective meanings for the work which they undertake, represented, principally, by the self image of "Woman-warrior" and "Woman-man". It is concluded that recognition and meanings of the work correlate with how the female recycling workers experience and understand their work.

ABSTRACT: In Brazil, at least 30% of the total financial resources provided by the federal government for school feeding should be used to buy products from family farming. The present study examines the profile of the purchase of these products in municipalities of the state of Rio Grande do Sul (RS), south Brazil, in 2014. A cross-sectional descriptive study was carried out with information obtained through a questionnaire sent to the municipalities and filled by respondents. Of the 371 participating municipalities, 367 acquired products from family farming, and 86.8% of these municipalities achieved the minimum percentage required. Nutritionists and farmers were the main components involved in the articulation of this process. Difficulties faced by these individuals included the lack of organization of the producers, failure to meet the demand, and lack of interest. More than 80% of the municipalities bought food from the “Vegetables”, “Cereals, Breads, Pasta, and Tubers” and “Fruits” groups. Only 8% purchased products from socio-biodiversity. There was a great diversity of food purchased, most of which were in natura, despite the low acquisition of socio-biodiversity products. Results of this study indicated the concern and tendency of the Brazilian municipalities to support the local economy with incentives to consumption and production of regional foods.

This article presents a reflection on the past and current history, uses, and significance of the Luiz Rau creek to the municipality of Novo Hamburgo, Rio Grande do Sul. Its waters have always been important to the region, quenching the thirst of the local population and their livestock and providing venues for shared social interactions, but also as a destination for municipal industrial and household waste, which has polluted the waters of the creek. Our primary objective is to present and discuss these aspects with the purpose of elucidating the historical importance of this watercourse to the city of Novo Hamburgo. Toward that end, we conducted an exploratory survey to obtain the necessary inputs for such a discussion. We also employed texts from the now-defunct Jornal 5 de Abril and from Jornal NH, the highest-circulating newspaper in the region, to illustrate some situations experienced by the community. We found that municipal waste continues to be dumped into the creek, which has made it rather unloved by the local residents, but it remains firmly present in their daily lives.

ABSTRACT Objective: to identify the constituent services of the network to combat violence against rural women in municipalities in the northwestern region of Rio Grande do Sul and to analyze the articulation and communication of services in search of the resolution of situations of violence. Method: descriptive-exploratory, qualitative study, carried out through semi-structured interviews with 26 professionals from intersectoral services, as well as managers and/or those responsible for these services. Data were systematized through content analysis. Results: although the professionals collectively discuss and plan coping actions, difficulties were identified in the approximation between services, related to the definition of flow, knowledge of actions/referrals, fear of seeing and reporting violence, understanding that it is not a question of demand of their field of action, and women's access to services. Final considerations: it is evident the need to implement public policies that address the singularities of violence against women in rural settings.
