Poor social support provided within health care settings may reduce patients’ ability to manage disease. The presence of family members in emergency department (ED) may reduce the patient’s need for health care and social services utilization. The aim of the study was to describe the social support received by family in the ED. A cross-sectional empirical study design was used. Convenience sample of 111 family members of home discharged older patients and of 93 nurses were recruited. The study was conducted at four Estonian hospitals. Data were collected by using social support scale of the Family Functioning, Health and Social Support (FAFHES). Family members and nurses both considered the social support available in EDs to be moderate. Nurses believed they provided higher levels of social support than the family members stated the family received. The differences were statistically significant. The older a nurse was, the less reinforcement, feedback, and affecting others for finding solutions was offered. A greater number of nurses working in the ED resulted in less social support. This study found differences of views between family members of older patients and nurses regarding the level of social support of the family. Nursing care provided in ED should be developed to be more supportive. To ensure more family-centred approach when providing nursing care, the administrative staff needs to consider whether an adequate number of nurses are working in the ED. The social support scale used was found to be applicable in ED environments.

Objective: to analyze the satisfaction of family members with the social support received during the care of children exposed to human immunodeficiency virus. Methods: cross-sectional study with 87 relatives of these children, in a university hospital. The Satisfaction with Social Support Scale was used. Sociodemographic and clinical variables were analyzed using the Lilliefors, Kruskal-Wallis and Mann-Whitney tests. Results: the participants, mostly mothers, showed high satisfaction with the total social support (57 out of 75 points). The average indicated that the satisfaction was high for the support received from the family (80.46), followed by that provided by friendships (72.86) and intimacy (63.36) and low for social activities (55.65). The group classified with income up to R$879.00 presented less satisfaction with social support (average=50,83) if compared with the group of income superior to R$879.00 (average=58,78) (p=0,014). Conclusion: the satisfaction with the social support of the relatives is high and influenced by income.

ABSTRACT Objective: To investigate the functional capacity and its relationship with the level of social support to people affected by cerebrovascular accident. Methods: Cross-sectional and quantitative research, conducted with 108 individuals with sequelae of cerebrovascular accident in João Pessoa/PB. Data were collected through interviews, using a sociodemographic instrument – the Barthel Index and the Social Support Scale. Results: We observed the prevalence of functional dependency in 93.5%, and the mild dependency stood out in 40.7%. Medium social support was the most found, with 48.2%. The predominant dimensions of social support were the material dimension, followed by the emotional. There was a significant association (p ≤ 0.05) between very serious dependency and high social support. ABSTRACT The aim of this study was to evaluate the social support for people with AIDS. It was a cross-sectional study, with 215 outpatients at a University Hospital in Northeastern Brazil. Data were collected from August to December 2012, through interviews, using a Socio-demographic and Clinical Form and a Social Support Scale for People Living with HIV/AIDS. Statistical Package for the Social Science was used for data analysis. Results showed that average scores of social emotional and instrumental support were satisfactory and not influenced by sex (p=0.954; p=0.508), education (p=0.756; p=0.194), marital status (p=0.076; p=0.446) and length of antiretroviral therapy (p=0.480; p=0.120). People diagnosed for less than three years had more instrumental support (p=0.048) than those diagnosed over three years (p=0.370). Neighbors, employers and health professionals provided less support. The conclusion was that people with AIDS have satisfactory social support, especially from friends and family not living in the same household.

Objective:To explore the association between family and friends’ social support and leisure-time physical activity (PA) in adults.Methods:Cross-sectional population-based study, conducted in Pelotas, Brazil. Leisure-time PA was measured with the long version of the International Physical Activity Questionnaire. Those who reported PA practice ≥ 150 minutes on the week before the interview were considered active. Social support was evaluated through the Social Support Scale for PA and classified according to the type of PA. For analyzing the association between social support and PA, Poisson regression model was used. Analyses were stratified by sex and interactions with socioeconomic level and age were explored. Results:Men and women who received social support from family and friends simultaneously were about 3 times more active than their counterparts. Friends’ social support presented, in all analyses, stronger associations with PA than family support. Interactions with socioeconomic level and age were observed. Conclusion:Interventions targeting individuals and their social environment are likely to have greater effectiveness than those targeted on one of these aspects only.

Female prisoners, who are minority figures in prisons, have fewer opportunities to obtain health facilities and services that support their reproductive health care. Programs and socialization aimed at female prisoners are often ineffective, so they don't get the knowledge they need. Sometimes, their basic needs, such as when they experience menstruation (such as sanitary napkins and clean underwear), are still lacking. The purpose of this study is to describe the social support received by female prisoners in the practice of genital personal hygiene behavior during the period of detention at the Class IIA Sidoarjo Penitentiary. The method used is a qualitative method. The conclusion that can be drawn from this study is, the support received by female prisoners during the detention period to support the behavior of genitalia personal hygiene, namely the family of female prisoners, female prisoners' roommates, to the prison. Support provided in the form of information to the items needed.

ABSTRACT Objective: to understand the care actions developed for the relatives of users of psychoactive substances from the perspective of professionals and family members. Method: based on the Social Phenomenology approach of Alfred Schütz’s. The research was performed in a Psychosocial Alcohol and Drug Attention Center of a municipality in the State of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. Phenomenological interviews were conducted with 13 professionals and 12 family members of users of psychoactive substances, from July to November, 2016. The steps suggested by Social Phenomenology researchers were used for data analysis. Results: three categories were revealed: care actions for family members from the perspective of professionals; care actions identified by family members, and reciprocity of perspectives in relation to care actions for family members. The professionals reported care actions developed in the service for the family: listening, reception, individual care, guidance, referrals, family groups and home visits; and care actions identified by family members: family group, care, reception, resolution, psychological support and guidance. The reciprocity of perspectives in relation to care actions for family members, from the perspective of the professionals and family members was: a group of family members, reception and guidance.
