This study examined crime in tertiary institutions in southern Nigeria.  The purpose of the study was to identify the common crime prevalent in the institution, the administrative strategies for managing crime and find out the extent to which institution managers or Administrators are employing the identified strategies to ensure a crime free environment. Three research questions were asked and answered. The sample of the study was drawn from a population of tertiary institutions in Southern Nigeria  A sample of 1020 respondents were selected through stratified random sampling technique from nine tertiary institutions in South-West Nigeria. The questionnaire was the instrument for collection of data from the respondents. It is divided into three sub-scales. Cronbach Alpha for the three sub scales yielded 0.84, 0.80 and 0.76. The finding revealed the common crime prevalent in tertiary institution in South-West Nigeria as examination malpractices, assault, plagiarism, sexual harassment, and certificate forgery. The findings further showed that crime management strategies like mounting closed circuit camera in strategic locations, regular monitoring of activities, use of anti-cult group are some of the identified crime management strategies. The extent of employment of the identified strategies in crime management is low.

Purpose: This work examined Business-Information Technology Alignment and Sustainability of State-Owned Tertiary Institutions in Rivers State, Nigeria. The objective was to investigate the relationship between strategy-driven alignment and sustainability of state-owned tertiary institutions in Rivers State, Nigeria. Methodology: To achieve this, two research questions and hypotheses were designed to guide the study. The population for this work comprised 1,224 staff between grade level 11 and above in the five state-owned tertiary institutions in Rivers State.   The sample size of this study consisted of 302 selected using the Taro-Yamane sampling technique.  The instrument for data collection was the questionnaire. The test for the internal regularity of the instrument was conducted using Spearman Rank Order correlation. Mean and standard deviation were used to answer the research questions; Statistical Package for Social Science out version 23.0 was used to test the null hypotheses. Findings: It was found that strategy-driven alignment significantly influenced the sustainability of quality service delivery of the state-owned tertiary institutions in Rivers State, Nigeria; the study therefore concluded that adopting the concept of business-information technology alignment will invariably result to sustainability in tertiary institutions. Recommendation: The study recommended among other things that: Federal and state governments as well as tertiary institution’s management should, as a matter of urgency, develop credible strategy-driven alignment approach that will ensure that the unique objectives of the tertiary institutions are derived seamlessly while using IT, that tertiary institution management should fore-handily train all IT staff on the objectives of the institution so that everyone in IT has a visceral understanding of the institutions intention with regards to quality service delivery.

This study investigates management strategies for improving the functionality of tertiary education in Nigeria. One research question was asked and answered and three hypotheses were formulated and tested at 0.05 alpha level. The sample of the study comprised 900 respondents selected through the simple random sampling technique from six tertiary institutions in Delta and Edo States of Nigeria. The questionnaire was the instrument for collection of data from the respondents. Descriptive statistics in the forms of mean and standard deviation were used to answer the only research question. The three hypotheses were tested using one way analysis of variance. The results obtained showed that improved funding, monitoring and adoption of best practice in service delivery would help to improve the functionality of tertiary education in Delta and Edo States. Staffs of University, Polytechnics and Colleges of Education did not differ significantly in their mean perception scores for any of the identified management strategy for improving the functionality of tertiary education. The study recommended that governments of Delta and Edo States should give adequate priority to tertiary education by ensuring that enough fund is allocated and disbursed to the institutions for proper management of affairs and improved functionality.

The study was carried out to survey NCE students’ perceptions on use of library course as an aid to their use of library resources in Colleges of Education in South-West Nigeria. The descriptive survey design was employed and four research questions guided the study. From a population of 60,481 students, a sample of 1,210 was drawn using the proportionate stratified sampling technique. Meanwhile, out of the 1,210 copies of the questionnaire distributed, 1,097 were fully completed (filled out) as retrieved and analyzed. It represents (90.66%) or approximately (91%) response rate and considered adequate because the standard and acceptable response rate for most studies is 60%. A questionnaire was the instrument used for data collection after validation by experts in the field, and pre-tested through Cronbach Alpha method that yielded 0.743 aggregate values. Complete data subsequently gathered from 1,097 copies of the questionnaire retrieved were analyzed by employing the statistical mean to answer the research questions and criterion mean placed at 2.50. Among the major findings of the study were: Students perceived use of library course as an aid to their use of all library resource categories examined in the study (that is, reference, reserve, circulation and serials resources). The study therefore recommends that students should be given increased opportunity to access “use of library course programme” as a veritable tool of enhancing their capacity for adequate use of reference resources among others in colleges of education in the region to ensure their effective integration into our 21st century society even after college life.

Abstract The research was set out to find the causal factors and effects of unemployment on graduates of tertiary institutions in Ogun State South West Nigeria: Implications for counselling. In order to carry out the research, two research questions and one hypotheses were formulated to guide the study. The researcher made use of an instrument tagged causal factors and effects of unemployment on graduates of tertiary institutions questionnaire (CFAEOUGOTIQ) to collect information. The instrument contained twenty items. The instrument had content validity and language appropriateness. The instrument had a reliability coefficient of 0.85. The population of the study was made up of graduates of universities, polytechnics and colleges of education that had no job in public and private sectors in Ogun State Nigeria. The researcher used the purposive sampling technique to select 226 university graduates, 120 polytechnic graduates and 75 college of education graduates that participated in the research. Copies of the questionnaire were administered on each of the participants by 3 research assistants. The return rate of copies of the questionnaire administered, showed that 215 questionnaires were retrieved from the university graduates, 107 questionnaires were retrieved from polytechnic graduates and 60 copies of the questionnaire were retrieved from college of education graduates. The scoring and collation of the information from the field was done by the researcher. The researcher used the mean and standard deviation to answer the two research questions while the analysis of variance was used to test the hypothesis. The researchers used 2.50 as benchmark to determine whether respondents agreed or disagreed with each of the items on table one and two. The hypothesis was held significant at 0.05 level of significance. Some of the findings of the research showed that, high rate of graduate turn out, neglect of the agricultural sector by government, collapse of manufacturing industries and reforms in the banking sector resulting in regular retrenchment of workers were causal factor of unemployment on graduates of tertiary institutions. Other include, misappropriation of funds meant for development of projects, lack of employable skills by graduates and inability to pass employment interviews. The research also found out that one of the effects of unemployment on graduates of tertiary institution is low self-esteem of themselves. One of the recommendations is that admission into tertiary institutions should be based on the number of vacancies available in public and private sectors.

This paper investigated conflict management strategies in tertiary institutions in Ondo State. As a descriptive survey, the study population comprised all the staff and the management of three institutions. For the study sample, two hundred and ten was selected by stratified sampling technique. The instrument for data collection was 45 items Likert-type questionnaire tagged ‘Conflict Management Strategies Questionnaire’ (CMSQ). The reliability of the instrument was determined through test-retest method and the reliability co-efficient was 0.86. The content and face validity of the instrument was carried out by one expert in Test and Measurement, an expert in Psychology of Education; and an expert in Guidance and Counselling. The data collected were analyzed using frequency count, percentages, Analysis of Variance (ANOVA), and Multiple Regression. It was found that conflict in Federal University of Technology (FUTA), Rufus Giwa Polytechnic and Adeyemi College of Education occurred frequently. Nonpayment of salaries as at when due was the major cause of conflict in these institutions. The most effective conflict management strategies used was participatory decision strategy. Based on the findings, it was ascertained that role conflict occurred between academic staff and professional administrators; and conflict management strategies were critical variables in the school system. It was recommended that the academic and professional administrators should continue to demonstrate spirit of tolerance so as to ensure the smooth running of university, polytechnic and the college.

The study explored administrative strategies for effective teaching in basic schools in the era of frozen moment in Rivers State, Nigeria. Three research questions were answered while three hypotheses were tested. The study adopted an analytic survey research design with a population of 247 headteachers in 247 public basic schools in Rivers State. The sample size is 172 headteachers representing 70% of the population of the headteachers. The sample size was arrived at using proportionate stratified random sampling technique. An instrument titled Administrative Strategies for Effective Teaching Scale (ASETS) was used for data collection. Face and content validities were ensured by experts in Educational Management as well as Test and Measurement in the University of Port Harcourt. The internal consistency reliability coefficient of 0.83 was computed for ASETS through Cronbach alpha statistical method. Mean and standard deviation were used to answer the research questions while z-test was used to test the hypotheses at 0.05 level of significance. It was found that the headteachers can use reward management system as well as online supervision of their teachers’ academic preparation progress to enhance their teaching effectiveness. It was also found that the headteachers have the problem of time management and financial incapacity to carry out online administrative functions. It was recommended among others that the headteachers and local and state governments should assist the teachers in procuring electronic gadgets by giving them soft loans. The headteachers should cultivate the attitude of making use of online platform to disseminate information to the teachers for teaching effectiveness.

The study aimed at finding the influence of the family on the academic performance of married female students in Nigeria’s tertiary institutions. The study was guided by three research questions and three hypotheses. The population of the study was 176 Clothing and Textiles students in public universities South-South States, Nigeria. The sample size was 58 respondents that are married, selected through purposive sampling technique. Questionnaire vas used to elicit responses from the respondents. The records of students” raw scores were used to score performance. Data were analysed using mean, regression and ANOVA. Findings showed that the married female students perform their family roles. Their marital roles and family size did not influence their academic performance but their socioeconomic status did. The study investigated stakeholders’ perceptive in accessing Nigerian tertiary institutions’ admission, with a focus on Eredo LCDA, of Lagos State. It investigates; parents’, Jamb tutors’ and students’ perception of problems and ways of providing solutions on accessing tertiary institution admission. The descriptive research design was adopted, while simple random sampling was used to select respondents for the study. A structured questionnaire tagged AHEQ was engaged. Five research questions were answered in the course of the study. The result showed that stakeholder agrees to the challenges and the suggested solutions in accessing higher education. Also the result established a significant relationship between stakeholders’ personal factors and Jamb in addressing challenges facing students accessing higher education. There is composite and relative contribution between stakeholders’ personal factors and Jamb in addressing challenges facing students accessing higher education. Recommendations were made on how to improve students accessing higher education in Nigeria.

The study examined security awareness as a panacea for effective management of safe school Initiative and students’ academic achievement in unity schools in Nigeria. Three research questions guided the study. The study adopted descriptive survey design. The population of the study comprises 104 principals of unity schools in Nigeria. There was no sampling technique adopted since the entire population was manageable. The instrument for data collection was structured questions developed by the researchers titled: “Safe School Initiative Questionnaire (SSIQ)”. The instrument was validated by three experts, two from the Department of Educational Foundations and one in the Department of Science Education (Measurement and Evaluation Unit), all from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka. The reliability yielded a co-efficient of 0.83 using Cronbach Alpha techniques. Mean and standard deviation were used to answer the research questions. The findings of the study revealed that the rationale for launching safe school initiative was to protect Nigeria students in school from being attacks, to reduce the dropout rate, to enable the students to be conscious of security situation in schools, prevent future attacks on schools, and general protection of education sector in Nigeria. The findings of the study also revealed that school based management strategies can be adopted for safe school initiative implementation in unity schools in Nigeria. Based on the findings of the study, the following recommendation were made, among other that, federal government should provide safety facilities especially perimeter fencing in unity school in Nigeria.

This study investigated the impact of ruga policy on national integration in Nigeria. The study was carried out in South-South, South-East, South-West and North-Central geo-political zones of Nigeria. The sample consist of 4,000 literate adults who were composed through accidental sampling technique from markets, motor parks and federal secretariats in Port Harcourt, Owerri, Lagos and Makurdi. Relevant data for answering the research questions were collected from the sample through the administration of copies of Ruga and National Integration Challenges Questionnaire by the researchers and six research assistants. The reliability co-efficient of this questionnaire was established with 50 subjects from University of Port Harcourt through the Cronbach Alpha method and it was 0.81, 0.80, 0.87 and 0.83 for the three sub-sections of the instrument and the overall. Data analysis was carried out with mean and standard deviation test statistics. The results show that ruga policy to a very great extent impact negatively on peaceful co-existence, and sense of trust among ethnic groups. It also heightens fear and anxiety in the country. These findings were discussed, the counselling implications stated and some recommendations were also made. One of the recommendations is that the federal government should cancel the ruga policy in Nigeria.
