Split 2 is a significant part of urban and architectural heritage in Split and Croatia. This arises from the scope and reach of the rational urban planning and use of space, inventive architectural design focused on construction technologies, operations and materials which were mainly organized in concentric construction sites of housing developments and areas which predominantly featured standardized residential buildings and residential high-rises in the period from 1957 to 1968.

The article represents a research of the traditional houses from the Republic of Moldova specific to the period XVIII - XX centuries. Life, always conditioned by life, is a major program that, in the vernacular architecture of the Republic of Moldova, plays the role of the function of continuity. The main objectives of this article are to bring in heritage practice, beneficial information, both for the historical monument and for architects, specialists and the general public interested in the future of heritage objects, locally or nationally and how they influence the factors of decision involved. The slow transformations, recorded over the last two thousand years, in which we distinguish evidence of its evolution, are the result of slow transformations, both of techniques and instructional materials, as well as of the specific occupations and way of life sec. XVIII - XX. Starting from the semi-buried dwellings, the surface houses with a single level, constituted the architectural solutions with the widest spread on the whole territory of the country, until the middle of the century. XX. The architecture of traditional residential buildings - plan, size and appearance - were influenced by physical, social, historical, geographical conditions, the natural environment and the specifics of the household. The knowledge of the architecture of the traditional house contributes to the reconstruction of some aspects of the ancient culture, inextricably linked to the problem of the continuity of the local population on these lands. In the architecture of the traditional house, the normative thinking, common at the technical level of the society, is combined with the adaptation to the individual requirements. The lack of this information, especially important for those interested in the fate of the architectural heritage, can cause serious damage to the historical monument, namely the loss of structural elements, functional and stylistic elements, elements of composition, volume and structure. The ambiguities can distort the real value of the monuments and even the loss of the value of architectural heritage, so the historical monument becomes vulnerable in the future.

This paper deals with research related to repair and strengthening of weak and brittle masonry infills in R.C. or steel frame structures. Masonry infills are commonly used in 20th century architectural heritage residential and office buildings. In case of earthquake damage to the weak and brittle masonry infills the commercial buildings go out of service and residents of residential buildings are prohibited from living in their homes although the main frame structure is not damaged. The new retrofitting method proposed in this paper may be either a preventive seismic improvement or a quick emergency intervention before seismic aftershocks: it is proposed to use a polymer PM to fill new horizontal and vertical joints between infilling masonry and frame or to fill cracks generated by the earthquake. The test results presented in the paper confirmed ability of polymer PM to fulfil requirements of quick repair material for seismic area.

Abstract. The use of digital tools and approaches related to the ICT field is now of particular importance for the knowledge and enhancement of the modern architectural heritage. The contribution intends to focus on the theme of cognitive analysis and digital documentation of some examples of public residential buildings of historical and testimonial value of the period following the second World War, in Italy, in order to define appropriate recovery strategies. Unlike buildings of historical-monumental importance, which have been the subject of studies and surveys involving the use of digital tools for several years now, little interest is still attributed to the knowledge of the building heritage of the second half of the Twentieth Century to which historical value is attributed. The interventions in the 1950s by INA Casa and U.N.R.R.A. Casas, in Italy, constitute interesting case studies that are worthy of further research and cognitive analysis based on holistic and multi-scalar approaches. In this context, the surveys and research in progress on the historical buildings of the rural village “La Martella” in Matera (1951–55) are an interesting example of experimentation using GIS-BIM digital platforms for the implementation of a multiscale knowledge methodology (from the territorial scale, to urban blocks to individual buildings) that provides for the structuring and implementation of an integrated information database (Common Data Environment) aimed at defining recovery strategies for the protection and enhancement of the historical buildings of the village, through the concept of interoperability for the systematization of archive sources and data obtained through surveys on the existing situation.

The commercial dynamics that the city of Annaba has experienced in recent decades, due to social and economic development and market liberalization, have changed its urban and architectural heritage. This city, located in north-eastern Algeria and created before the tenth century, has seen many civilizations and dynasties pass by. Every civilization has left behind traces that time has sometimes taken care of protecting them, to bequeath us or erasing them completely. This heritage wealth testifying and telling the story of our ancestors' past, unfortunately, began to lose its value and originality after the transformations and modifications that took place in the old residential buildings inherited from two opposing cultures by integrating new forms of commercial activities. The objective of this communication is to analyse and measure the evolution of these mutations, with a focus on the ancient colonial areas of the city of Annaba where the phenomenon is most pronounced.

Abstract. The work presented is the achievement of a master degree project, developed at Politecnico di Torino. The paper aims to provide standards for the formulation and mixing of earth-based mortars, for the rehabilitation of historic buildings of the Roero area, in Piemonte region. Roero presents a large architectural heritage, consisting mainly of fired or earth bricks rural and residential buildings, which was anciently protected using lime or earth-based plasters perfectly integrated with local landscape and environment colours appearance. In recent decades (and still to present days), vernacular plasters are frequently replaced by cement-based products, resulting hardly compatible with local bearing walls materials and landscape aesthetic features. While Roero traditional buildings plasters were produced using local earth and sands coming from streams, today, aggregates extraction in watercourses proximity is not allowed, or strictly regulated by rules and regional regulations. The paper presents a classification of the characteristics of different soils from Roero area, through different types of particle distribution size analysis and diffractometric tests, and propose a method for the production of local earth-based plasters stabilized with lime, making use of earth and rocks from local excavation sites, considered in Italy as secondary raw materials or special waste. Produced plasters compressive and bending strength have been tested, while their suitability for building maintenance and restoration, as their compatibility with Roero architecture and landscape, have been verified through spectrophotometric measures.

In Ukraine, one of the main problems in the field of architecture and construction is an outdated housing stock with low energy efficiency indicators. The total housing stock of Ukraine is 1031.7 million m2, of which more than 4.8 million m2 is an outdated and emergency stock, 11% of residential buildings need repairing, and 9% – reconstruction. Its significant part (72 million m2 or 23%) is morally outdated buildings of the first mass series of 1950−1960, which have a number of structural deficiencies and do not fit to current norms [11]. Most of the existing housing are in the historical environment, therefore, in addition to traditional approaches to the formation of energy-efficient housing, there are special approaches associated with a number of restrictions on the compositional, stylistic, and coloristic integrity to the architectural environment whith increasing energy efficiency of housing. This problem needs to be solved in a complex way, using thermo-modernization, thermo-reconstruction, sanation. An analysis of these approaches has shown that sanationis the most effective, as measures for the rehabilitation of multi-apartment buildings allow to increase energy efficiency of housing and preserve historical architectural heritage within the existing housing stock.
