Metonymy has long been treated as the forgotten trope while cognitive approach to metonymy sheds new light on the research of metonymy. Metonymy is not only considered as a figure of speech, but also a cognitive process in which one conceptual entity, the vehicle, provides mental access to another conceptual entity, the target, within the same idealized cognitive model (Radden & Kovecses, 1999). The investigation of concrete metonymy in Li Bai’s poems is aimed to offer a new perspective of metonymic devices for literary studies. Metonymy has the capacity to generate impressive aesthetic effects and highlight the theme in poetry. What’s more, it is a mirror to reflect the cognitive process the poet construes and thinks about the world. As far as readers are concerned, their interpretation of poetry partly depends on their mental construction of metonymic devices.

The article outlines the basic concepts of a cognitive approach in the study of language, including such a process as nomination, which is a topical issue for modern linguistics as well. The nomination is seen as a multidimensional phenomenon and a complex thought-and-speech process that objectifies the cognitive features of human activity and the structure properties of his or her consciousness. There is substantiated the importance of the cognitive-onomasiological approach involvement to the study of the nominative act, as well as there is characterized the development of the science onomasiology as a way to linguocognitivism. The assumption is made that the key term of the onomasiology is the concept of nomination, which needs to be interpreted in the gnoseo-semiotic and linguistic aspects. Nomination is characterized as a process that is constantly accompanied by human’s cognition the world, so the use of cognitive tools in the analysis of nominative units extends the boundaries of research and especially in the direction of terminological nomination. The terminological nomination also includes the processes of conceptualization and verbalization, but of professional knowledge, and it is the result of cognitive activity of specialists. The terminological unit represents the essential qualities of the nominated object that is why it is important to analyze the motivation of the meaning, as well as the notion of the internal form of the term, which is a formal-semantic relation of the nomination. As a result, it is stated that the ability of a linguistic sign is potentially limitless and depends on the person's cognition of reality. In addition to this, the nomination in the cognitive aspect is a verbalized form of knowledge about the world in general or within the framework of the certain professional activity of a person in particular.

Film, although one of the youngest art forms, influences societies due to its unique way of interacting with the viewer. Film directors employ different tropes in conveying messages to audiences. One of such tropes is costume. “Sex sells” is a popular expression in advertising and marketing communications. The purpose of this study is to offer a new perspective on how sex scenes in films could be used to project aspects of a country’s culture. Riding on this popular expression, we argue that sex scenes in a Ghanaian video film could be a strong fulcrum to expose aspects of the rich Ghanaian culture to the world. We submit that by paying particular attention to the mise-en-scene of costume used during sex scenes, directors could lure film lovers into appreciating the kinds of fabric as well as style used by characters in a film. Through the case study method, we reviewed literature on mise-en-scene of costume in film, and its ability to convey underlying messages to the viewer. The literature review serves as the basis of our argument, where we propose how to ride on costume in sex scenes to project and market the richness of Ghanaian culture regarding clothing/costume in sex scenes in films. In this regard, we have been able to problematize a new way of thinking about sex scenes in films, especially regarding sex scene costume as a unique selling proposition and its contribution to marketing a country’s culture to the viewing public. This study contributes to policy in the entertainment industry in terms of portrayal of sex scenes in Ghanaian video films while ensuring cultural adaptability and growth.

Internally focalized passages in narrative often employ metaphors to capture the experiential states of the focalizing character. My investigation of these metaphors – ‘phenomenological metaphors’, as I call them – has two important precedents in the fields of narratology and literary stylistics: Dorrit Cohn’s (1978) treatment of ‘psycho-analogies’ and Semino and Swindlehurst’s (1996) approach to metaphor and ‘mind style’. After positioning phenomenological metaphors vis-à-vis these related concepts, I put forward the central claim of this article: metaphorical language plays a role in readers’ engagement with focalizing characters because it can sustain readers’ illusion of experiencing a storyworld through the consciousness of a fictional being. But what is it about metaphorical language that makes it especially suited to bring about this effect on readers? In order to answer this question, I use Ian McEwan’s novel Saturday (2005) as a case study, presenting two different lines of argument. First, I contend that metaphors reflect, at a linguistic level, the seamless integration of perception, emotion and language that characterizes our everyday transactions with the world. Second, I look at the relationship between understanding metaphorical language and readers’ empathy for characters, arguing that the continuity between these psychological processes is grounded in their perspectival nature: just as metaphors invite recipients to adopt a new perspective on a conceptual domain, engaging with a focalizing character encourages readers to ‘try on’ his or her experiential perspective and worldview. Taken together, these hypotheses provide an explanation for the effectiveness of phenomenological metaphors at conveying to readers the qualitative ‘feel’ of characters’ experiences.

Studying the work of Russian writers from the perspective of modern literary approaches is one of the leading problems of the theory and history of literature. Many research works are written within that framework. Designed on the basis of such an approach, this article is devoted to the analysis of one of the aspects of A. F. Pisemsky’s novel «Men of the Forties». We examined the image of the novel’s protagonist, Pavel Vikhrov, from the point of view of his committing an actively responsible act marking his place in the world. The central problem of the article is the cognitive modeling of the act of a literary hero. The article studies the nature of the act of a literary hero in the artistic space of a Russian novel; the capacity of the cognitive approach to studying the behavior of a literary hero is analyzed. The performer of the act is a hero introduced into a number of literary universals, i.e. «a man of the forties». The novelty of the research work is largely determined by the combination of literary research methods and the technologies of categorical-system and cognitive analysis of texts. The result of the analysis is an algorithm for creating a model of the act of a literary hero and applying it to a specific work. The authors of the article come to the conclusion that the description of the act of a literary hero using cognitive models allows: firstly, to understand the motives of the act of A. F. Pisemsky’s hero; secondly, to discover the essence of this act; thirdly, to study the features of A. F. Pisemsky’s artistic picture of the world through the act of a literary hero.

In psychological science, mindfulness and compassion are thought to promote physical health, mental well-being, and even virtuous character. Yet in Buddhist philosophy, mindfulness and compassion can cause suffering when the two are not balanced. One key mechanism of mindfulness is “dereification,” which amounts to experiencing one’s thoughts just as thoughts, and not as real representations of the world. If one focuses solely on thoughts as unreal representations, one can simply dismiss all such activity, leading to apathy. Compassion can be problematic if one gets caught up in other-cherishing, and if others’ aspirations and needs fail to align with those that one has imposed upon others. In this article, we review how the integration of mindfulness and compassion yields a novel framework to examine flourishing. As a case study, we apply these insights to the science of relationships, which leads to a re- conceptualization of “individual” flourishing.

Abstract Culture shapes our basic sensory experience of the world. This is particularly striking in the study of religion and psychosis, where we and others have shown that cultural context determines both the structure and content of hallucination-like events. The cultural shaping of hallucinations may provide a rich case-study for linking cultural learning with emerging prediction-based models of perception.
