The attitudes of local communities towards the development of dark tourism are still underexplored. This thorough analysis of the scientific knowledge available in renowned databases in the period from 2013 to 2019 aims at explaining the role of local communities in dark tourism, the advantages and disadvantages of its development, and the understanding of the conditions needed for its acceptance and support. The analysis has determined that every practice of dark tourism is conditioned by the context within which it was created, and that it has economic, socio-cultural and environmental advantages and disadvantages. The support of the local community for the development of dark tourism is crucial for its continuous existence, and it can depend on the management strategies and the benefits that dark tourism provides. The research results contribute to the corpus of literature, and may inform strategic guidelines for dark tourism management, as well as benefit the wider community through awareness of the necessity of prevention of tragic events. Further research on the topic should create management strategies of dark tourism that are acceptable to local communities.

AbstractThis article deals with the history of Isfahan during the five centuries between the arrival of the Turks and the beginning of the Safavid period. It attempts to identify the continuities and ruptures from three different perspectives: To what extent can we speak of an urban decline? What was the relationship of the Isfahanis with the imperial rulers? How did the general context impact the makeup and the organisation of the society? It appears that Isfahan demonstrated remarkable resilience over the period, and that it is only beginning with the Timurid period that we can speak of a decline. Likewise, there is remarkable continuity in the ways in which the local elites collaborated with or resisted the imperial players. The role of the Ṣāʿid family, which held the cadial function over four centuries, is emblematic in this respect. Conversely, under special circumstances, the imperial players were able to exert great substantial influence on the local communities, and it is this political backing which explains the strengthening of the Hanafis in the sixth/twelfth century, and that of the Shiis in the following. One of the main accomplishments of this synthesis view of Isfahan history is that it assesses the effects of the Mongol domination relative to that of other periods.

Currently, a growing interest in the issues related to sustainable development can be observed, with the role of culture in stimulating this development increasing simultaneously. Nevertheless, the function and meanings of culture for sustainable development, as well as culture in the context of sustainable development, have so far remained under-emphasised and under-theorised. For this reason, in this paper we will look at practical examples of culture and sustainable development combined. The undertaken research problem explores the project-based work in the field of cultural animation, and its impact on the pursuit of the objectives of sustainable development at the local level. Two case studies of Polish organisations involved in cultural animation activities have been analysed herein. Based on the research results, we showed that cultural animation is an important tool for enabling local communities to achieve sustainable development. What is also important is the fact that cultural animation activities often take the form of project-based work, which significantly affects the methodology and extent of their implementation. Therefore, in this article we also point to the relationship between the management of animation projects and the idea of sustainable development, emphasising both advantages and disadvantages thereof.

History of study of the sphincter of Oddi (SO) is presented in a detail in the article, attention is paid to the anatomical and functional relationships of SO with the gallbladder, duodenum and pancreas. The role of SO dysfunction in the pathogenesis of pancreatitis and biliary dysfunction is described in detail, previous and modern ideas about SO pancreatic disfunction are considered. The historical features of the introduction of the term “dyspancreatism” are given, the clinical peculiarities and periods of its occurrence are listed, the pathogenetic relationship of dyspancreatism with other functional disorders, including functional dyspepsia, is described. Provisions of the IV Roman consensus are considered, confirming the relationship of pancreatic dysfunction with the occurrence of pancreatic pain and pancreatitis itself. The criteria for the diagnostics of pancreatic type SO dysfunction, formulated in the modern Rome recommendations for the diagnosis and treatment of functional gastroenterological disorders, are presented. Standard and alternative diagnostic tests are listed, which conduction will confirm the SO dysfunction. Modern approaches to the treatment of SO dysfunction are analyzed, focusing on the use of invasive treatment methods, the advantages and disadvantages of biliary and pancreatic sphincterotomy are revealed, the inexpediency of performing the endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography in patients with single episode of idiopathic acute pancreatitis is proved. The need for a balanced and cautious approach to the use of invasive methods for the treatment of SO dysfunction is emphasized; prospects for further study of the pathology of this sphincter are described.

Cultural heritage tourist destinations have emerged as a hot topic in tourism literature, but there have been relatively few studies that determine the role of the involvement of local participation in either tourism planning or the decision-making processes of tourists. The connection between local community participation (LCP), authenticity, access to local products, destination visit image, tourist satisfaction, and tourist loyalty is thus relatively unexplored in the literature. This study used a quantitative approach based on a survey with 406 respondents visiting the city of Kaiping in Guangdong, China. The proposed hypotheses were empirically tested with SPSS and Analysis of Moment Structures. The resulting outcomes indicated a positive correlation between LCP, authenticity, and access to local and destination visit image, which led to tourist satisfaction and ultimately resulted in tourist loyalty. Additional theoretical contributions, practical implications, and limitations were also discussed.

The scientific problem of economics “Managing the quality of human life” is formulated on the basis of artificial intelligence, algebra of logic and logical-probabilistic calculus. Managing the quality of human life is represented by managing the processes of his treatment, training and decision making. Events in these processes and the corresponding logical variables relate to the behavior of a person, other persons and infrastructure. The processes of the quality of human life are modeled, analyzed and managed with the participation of the person himself. Scenarios and structural, logical and probabilistic models of managing the quality of human life are given. Special software for quality management is described. The relationship of human quality of life and the digital economy is examined. We consider the role of public opinion in the management of the “bottom” based on the synthesis of many studies on the management of the economics and the state. The bottom management is also feedback from the top management.

McIntyre, in his seminal work on Scottish franchise courts, argues that these courts were in decline in this period, and of little relevance to their local population. 1 But was that really the case? This paper explores that question, using a particularly rich set of local court records. By analysing the functions and significance of one particular court it assesses the role of this one court within its local area, and considers whether it really was in decline at this time, or if it continued to perform a vital role in its local community. The period studied is the mid to late seventeenth century, a period of considerable upheaval in Scottish life, that has attracted considerable attention from scholars, though often less on the experiences of local communities and people.

This essay examines a polemic between two Baudelaire critics of the 1930s, Jean Cassou and Benjamin Fondane, which centered on the relationship of poetry to progressive politics and metaphysics. I argue that a return to Baudelaire's poetry can yield insight into what seems like an impasse in Cassou and Fondane. Baudelaire provides the possibility of realigning metaphysics and politics so that poetry has the potential to become the space in which we can begin to think the two of them together, as opposed to seeing them in unresolvable tension. Or rather, the tension that Baudelaire animates between the two allows us a new way of thinking about the role of esthetics in moments of political crisis. We can in some ways see Baudelaire as responding, avant la lettre, to two of his early twentieth-century readers who correctly perceived his work as the space that breathes a new urgency into the questions of how modern poetry relates to the world from which it springs and in which it intervenes.
