Selected nutritional behaviors in children and youth at school age – preliminary study

Purpose: To evaluate diet, frequency and type of products consumed and offered at school shops. Materials and methods: Studies were conducted in 2014 among 159 pupils of three randomly selected schools in Bialystok (elementary school, middle school, and high school). The original anonymous questionnaire was used as a research tool. Analysis of results depending on age of the respondents was performed using contingency tables and Pearson's chi-squared test. For hypothesis testing evaluation, significance level of 0.05 was assumed. Results: Consumption of four or more meals during the day was declared by more than half of respondents. Three meals were consumed by 41.5% of middle school pupils, 29.8% of primary school children, and 27.1% of secondary school pupils. Percentage of pupils eating meals outside the home increased with age. Elementary school pupils (91.5%) took water to school significantly more often than middle school or high school pupils (64.2% and 54.2% respectively) (p<0.05). The highest percentage of pupils buying fast food at school was elementary school children, while sweet rolls were mostly bought by middle school pupils (75.5%). Elementary school pupils (78%) are provided information on healthy eating habits from family and school, while middle school (66%) and high school pupils (74.6%) receive this information from the media and magazines. Conclusions: Dietary mistakes reported in the group of pupils were more pronounced with age of respondents. Buying at school shops was associated with an increase in the amount of junk food at the cost of nutritious food

Background. Incidence of dental caries in primary school children is stillrelatively high. This corresponds to a pattern of wrong eating habits, asupportive environment such bad habits like sweet snacks, less fibrous andeasily sticky. In addition the frequency of irregular brushing teeth also contributeto the occurrence of dental caries.The purpose this study was to determine the relationship between thefrequency of brushing teeth with dental caries incidence of grade 2 studentsSDN Sumberagung II Klego. The hypothesis taken by the researchers issuspected there is a relationship between the frequency of brushing teeth withdental caries incidence in Class 2 SDN Sumberagung II Klego. <p><strong>ABSTRAK</strong></p><p><strong></strong> <em><strong>Latar belakang:</strong></em> Kegemukan terjadi akibat dari asupan energi yang lebih tinggi dibandingkan dengan pengeluaran energi. Faktor-faktor yang dapat menyebabkan kegemukan sering diabaikan oleh masyarakat seperti kebiasaan sarapan yang kurang baik dan rendahnya aktivitas fisik yang dilakukan oleh anak sekolah dasar.</p><p><em><strong>Tujuan:</strong> </em>Tujuan penelitian ini untuk mengetahui hubungan antara kebiasaan konsumsi sarapan dan aktivitas fisik dengan kejadian kegemukan pada anak sekolah dasar.</p><p><strong>Metode:</strong> Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian observasional dengan rancangan cross sectional dengan 130 subjek dan menggunakan uji chi square pada tingkat kemaknaan 95% (α=0,05).Pengambian data kebiasaan sarapan menggunakan kuesioner ang sudah divalidasi, pengambilan data aktivitas fisik menggunakan kuesioner PAQ-C (Physical Activity Questionaire for Children) dan data status gizi diambil dengan melakukan penimbangan serta pengukuran tinggi badan kemudian diklasifikasikan menggunakan indikator IMT/U.</p><p><em><strong>Hasil:</strong> </em>Hasil analisis menggunakan uji chi square menunjukkan terdapat hubungan antara kebiasaan konsumsi sarapan dengan kegemukan pada subjek (p=0,009) dan terdapat hubungan antara aktivitas fisik dengan kegemukan pada subjek (p=0,000).</p><p><em><strong>Kesimpulan:</strong></em> Kesimpulan penelitian ini adalah terdapat hubungan yang bermakna antara kebiasaan konsumsi sarapan dan aktivitas fisik dengan kegemukan pada anak usia sekolah dasar.</p><p><strong>KATA KUNCI:</strong> aktivitas fisik; kebiasaan sarapan; kegemukan</p><p><strong><br /></strong></p><p><strong>ABSTRACT</strong></p><p><em><strong>Background:</strong> </em>Overweight occurs as a result of higher energy intake compared to energy expenditure. Many people often underestimate about factors that can lead to overweight, such as bad breakfast habits and low physical activity in elementary school children.</p><p><em><strong>Objectives:</strong></em> The purpose of this study is to determine a correlation between breakfast habits and physical activity of students in elementary school with overweight.</p><p><em><strong>Methods:</strong></em> This study was an observational study with a cross-sectional design with 130 of the students and tests of the significance level of 95% (α=0.05). Breakfast habits data obtained using a validated questionnaire, physical activity data collection using the PAQ-C (Physical Activity Questionnaire for Children) and nutritional status data were taken by weighing and measuring height then classified using BMI/U indicators.</p><p><em><strong>Results:</strong></em> The result of the analysis using a chi-square test showed that there was a correlation between breakfast habits and overweight (p=0,009) and there was a correlation between physical activity with overweight (p=0.000).</p><p><em><strong>Conclusions:</strong></em> The conclusion, there are correlations between breakfast habits and physical activity with overweight among primary school children.</p><p><strong>KEYWORDS</strong>: physical activity, breakfast habits, overweight</p>

The purpose of this study is to determine parenting as applied by parents in Kelurahan Rawang Empat and to what extent parents' understanding of the relationship between parenting and children's learning discipline, as well as the causes of parenting. This research uses descriptive method with correlational research analysis techniques. Based on the analysis conducted showed that in the Rawang Empat sub-district Bandar Petalangan sub-district Pelalawan District parenting patterns in primary school children with an average value of 27.43 included in the category of "good enough" which is in the interval 25-28. While the level of discipline of elementary school children with an average value of 23.13 is included in the category of "sufficient discipline" that is at intervals of 21-23. By using product moment correlation analysis the results of hypothesis analysis show that the value of rxy = 0.953 is in a positive direction. The relationship between parenting style and the level of discipline of learning of elementary school children is included in the category of "very strong" at intervals of 0.80-1,000. The research data also showed that tcount = 14.416, while ttable at a significance level of 5% = 0.433 and ttable at a significance level of 1% = 0.549. It can be seen that tcount is greater than ttable. Thus it can be concluded that there is a significant relationship between parenting and the level of discipline of elementary school children in Rawang Empat Village, Bandar Petalangan District, Pelalawan Regency.

Overweight is a condition where the body experiences a buildup of fat in the body so that the body weight is outside the ideal limit. This study aims to determine whether the habit of snacking, fast food, physical activity is related to the incidence of overweight in elementary school children at SDN 18 Tumampua 1, Pangkep Regency. This type of research is an observational study using a cross sectional design. The results showed that there was a relationship between eating habits and the incidence of overweight with a p-value of 0.000, there was a relationship between fast food and overweight with a p value of 0.000, there was a relationship between physical activity and the incidence of overweight with a p-value of 0.000. The conclusion is based on the results of the study, namely the existence of snack habits, fast food, physical activity related to the incidence of overweight in elementary school children at SDN 18 Tumampua 1 Kab.Pangkep Abstrak Overweight merupakan kondisi dimana tubuh mengalami penumpukan lemak di dalam tubuh sehingga membuat berat badan berada di luar batas ideal. Penelitian ini bertujuan mengetahui apakah kebiasaan jajan, fast food, aktivitas fisik berhubungan dengan kejadian overweight pada anak sekolah dasar di SDN 18 Tumampua 1 Kab.Pangkep. Jenis penelitian ini adalah penelitian observasional dengan menggunakan desain cross sectional. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan adanya hubungan kebiasaan jajan dengan kejadian overweight dengan hasil nilai p 0.000, adanya hubungan makanan fast food dengan kejadian overweight dengan hasil nilai p 0.000, adanya hubungan aktivitas fisik dengan kejadian overweight dengan hasil nilai p 0.000. Kesimpulan berdasarkan hasil penelitian yaitu adanya kebiasaan jajan, fast food, aktivitas fisik berhubungan dengan kejadian overweight pada anak sekolah dasar di SDN 18 Tumampua 1 Kab.Pangkep

Dark-eyed individuals perform reactive activities better while light-eyed individuals generally perform self-paced activities better. There were 68 (21 dark-and 47 light-eyed) elementary school children who shot 5 practice and then 15 free throws from the free-throw line in a high school gym. There were no differences in performance between light- and dark-eyed children, but boys scored more free throws than girls.

We investigated breakfast eating habits and lifestyle behaviors among Saudi school children attending public versus private schools. A random sample of 1149 children (girls: 54.4%) from public and private schools was selected from elementary schools using the multistage stratified cluster method. Measurements included body weight, height, body mass index (BMI), and self-reported questionnaires filled by the child’s parents. There was no significant (p = 0.44) difference in the prevalence of breakfast intake between children attending public (20.6%) versus private (19.4%) schools. However, there was a gender by school type interactions in breakfast intake frequency, as boys in private but not in public schools had significantly (p = 0.006) higher (26.3%) daily breakfast intake than girls (13.3%). Over 56% of the children ate and drank from the school canteen, and impacting factors on children’s choices were children’s desire, food taste, and parental influence. More parents of children in private (12.1%) than in public (6.9%) schools were satisfied with the food in the school canteen. Younger age (aOR = 0.889, 95% CI = 0.815–0.970, p = 0.008), higher father education (aOR = 1.380, 95% CI = 1.130–1.686, p = 0.002), family income (aOR = 1.227, 95% CI = 1.005–1.498, p = 0.044), and insufficient sleep duration (aOR = 0.740, 95% CI = 0.553–0.990, p = 0.042) were significantly associated with being in a private school. Furthermore, no significant differences, when adjusted for socio-demographic factors, appeared in breakfast intake or overweight/obesity relative to school type. Interventions to improve daily breakfast consumption and lifestyle behaviors of Saudi children are warranted.

Experiences with food preferences begin in infancy and continue to develop on children transition to solid food. Children’s food preferences are influenced by availability and familiarity with foods as well as parental modeling and health related picture books. The aim of the study was to evaluate whether picture-books regarding healthy lifestyle can influence children’s eating preferences. A questionnaire related to the use of picture-books at home and lifestyle habits was distributed to all parents. Picture-books were provided to all parents. At the same time children were allocated in two groups: the intervention group, which took part in further activities (cooking), and to a comparison group. Interviews were addressed to the parents after the program. The ethical concern included confidentiality assurance and the choice to withdraw. Findings revealed that the daily reading of books about food was increased in both groups. Most of the families of the intervention group reduced fast food and sweet consumption and increased outdoor activities. Over recent decades, the common understanding of hearing impairment has improved.  People are more concerned with hearing impairment and have come to a consensus that care and positivity must be addressed. Therefore, recent trends in children with hearing disabilities inclusion have started in regular schools. The holistic training program provides opportunities for everyday people to learn about their abilities and special skills. The teacher needs to take care of the locomotive and object control skills of the child through the development of necessary motor skills to meet life requirements, such as walking, running, throwing, etc. The current study explores the ability of primary school children with hearing loss to incorporate an exergame to improve fundamental motor skills within an inclusive physical education classroom in Saudi Arabia. The study used a Qualitative Method and carried out a content analysis together with a Systematic Literature Review to understand the research carried out in this field. A detailed analysis was carried out of secondary data from articles indexed in Scopus and the websites of the scientific databases and other related documents in the field of study.  This study would expand the research awareness related to the success of vital engine skills in elementary school children with hearing impairment through the use of an exergame in comprehensive physical education.

<p>School grounds are critical places because they are some of the few play areas available for children to develop and transfer peer culture. Moreover, school playtime, which is often called “recess”, offers children daily opportunities for physical activity in the outdoor environment. During school years, age has always been presented in the studies on children as a fundamental component of their development. Children of different ages are interested in different play styles and have various play priorities. However, few studies have compared play patterns in children within age groups. This study explores play behaviors during recess in elementary school children overall, and secondly examines the differences in the play behavior of children, considering first graders who enter elementary school and the last graders. This study uses quantitative design and naturalistic observational approaches. An ethnogram recorded the observations of the play activities preferences of the children. The results of this study showed that girls spend the majority of their recess talking and socializing with peers generally. Older children, particularly those in grades fifth and sixth, spend more time socializing than other age groups. Children in the first grade spent much time in active free play, such as chasing and running, during recess and tend use their playtime as an opportunity to perform a physical activity; therefore the significance of combining recess and provisions for physical activity to reach health goals becomes clearer. These findings are interesting considerations for further research; such information could help to develop appropriate interventions to improve the recess.</p>
