The aim of the article is to review selected theoretical and empirical aspects concerning the death of a sibling as well as its psychological and social consequences for a living child. This topic has not been of interest to researchers so far. This fact may pose an obstacle in searching for effective forms of social and educational support for families who have been orphaned in this way, especially for children. The article illustrates the importance of selected factors that determine the grief experience of children in connection with the loss of a sibling, such as: gender and age, type and cause of sibling death, features of the family environment. Considering the practical implications, it may be emphasized that the ability of the living child to cope with the loss may depend on the willingness of parents to discuss the death of a sibling. Moreover, in order to plan the care and educational impact, gender, age, type and cause of sibling death should be taken into account.

This study was conducted to ensure that the family environment research method “Satisfaction with the family live scale” (SWFL) (Agate, Zabriskie, et.al., 2009) can be adapted to Latvia’s circumstances. The research cohort (n=485) was made up of 161 men and 321 women aged 18-21. There were four hypotheses in the study: 1) SWFL should not be correlated with gender and age in the 18-22 age group; 2) SWFL should indicate positive correlation with cohesion in family and 3) negative correlation with conflicts in family 4) Items of instrument must establish one factor. The study analyses the adaptation of the survey and reflects the major results in terms of utilising the survey for scholarly research and practical work in relation to an examination of the family environment in Latvia. Internal compatibility was measured on the basis of the Cronbach alpha (ɑ = 0.86). The results of the research confirm the stated hypotheses and make it possible to conclude that adaptation of the survey was successful. The survey can, therefore, be used under Latvia’s circumstances, as well

Background: Perinatal death (PD) is a painful experience, with physical, psychological and social consequences in families. Each year, there are 2.7 million perinatal deaths in the world and about 2000 in Spain. The aim of this study was to explore, describe and understand the impact of perinatal death on parents’ social and family life. Methods: A qualitative study based on Gadamer’s hermeneutic phenomenology was used. In-depth interviews were conducted with 13 mothers and eight fathers who had suffered a perinatal death. Inductive analysis was used to find themes based on the data. Results: Seven sub-themes emerged, and they were grouped into two main themes: 1) perinatal death affects family dynamics, and 2) the social environment of the parents is severely affected after perinatal death. Conclusions: PD impacts the family dynamics of the parents and their family, social and work environments. Parents perceive that society trivializes their loss and disallows or delegitimizes their grief. Implications: Social care, health and education providers should pay attention to all family members who have suffered a PD. The recognition of the loss within the social and family environment would help the families to cope with their grief.
