Physical activity is an integral part of a healthy lifestyle, regardless of an individual human’s stage of life. The aim of the study was to investigate the relationship between long-distance running and body image,as well as quality of life amongmiddle-aged Polish men practicing long distance-running. Furthermore, the study was aimed at comparing their group in terms of the above variables with the group of men not undertaking physical activity. The study was conducted in 2018 among 220 men. The research tool consisted of: an original personal survey, the Body Scale Image and the Shortened Version of the WHOQOL-BREF (The World Health Organization Quality of Life) Survey. It has been shown that practicing physical activity aff ects the perception of one’s body among men in the middle of adulthood, while its impact on the sense of quality of life has not been confi rmed. It has been proven that men who practice long-distance running diff er signifi cantly in the perception of their own body from men not performing any physical activity.

Summary The purpose of the study was to identify and analyze the occurrence of cathartic states in a sample of long-distance runners. Data collected via questionnaires were used to evaluate quantitative variables complemented by heuristics while aiming at qualitatively categorize the areas of cathartic states in the context of philosophical and spiritual aspects of long-distance running. The study findings objectify philosophical and spiritual aspects affecting personalities of long-distance runners. The study findings have shown that catharsis represents a relevant philosophical and spiritual aspect affecting long-distance running. We assume that authentic experience of catharsis and its effects motivates runners to perform regular physical activity. The analysis of philosophical and spiritual aspects of long-distance running has revealed a multi-spectral holistic relevance based on the transfer affecting a specific way of life, spectrum of values, ethical personality traits, and also the quality of long-distance runners’ lives.

ABSTRACTThe significant time older people typically spend at home affects both their level of physical activity and quality of life. This prospective cohort study was designed to identify the effects that living in a high-rise residence retirement community has on physical activity and quality of life in older people with leprosy. The relocation group was comprised of study participants who had relocated voluntarily to a high-rise apartment building. The comparison group was comprised of study participants who had chosen not to relocate to that building. Data were collected using a personal information survey, Modified Baecke's Questionnaire, and the brief version of the World Health Organization Quality of Life assessment (WHOQOL-BREF). The groups were significantly similar in terms of household activities, leisure time activities, total physical activity score, and quality of life physical and social aspects, and significantly different in terms of quality of life overall (F=7.864,p=0.006), psychological (F=5.403,p=0.021) and environmental (F=23.099,p=0.000) aspects. This study indicates that living in a high-rise apartment environment does not decrease physical activity and may promote overall quality of life, and psychological and environmental aspects, in retirement community residents. The findings enhance understanding of the effect of different living environments on physical activity and quality of life. Greater health professional participation in retirement community design to ensure such designs facilitate residents’ health and quality of life is recommended.

Objective: Quality of life (QOL) has become a topic of growing interest in medical and psychiatric practice in general, and in research in particular. Although the body of knowledge about the complex relationship between QOL and psychiatric disorders is growing, understanding this relationship still remains difficult. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to get more and new insights into this relationship. It was hypothesized that QOL would be negatively related to the presence as well as the severity of psychopathology. Method: A random sample of Dutch adult psychiatric outpatients (n=410) completed the World Health Organization Quality of Life assessment instrument, abbreviated version (WHOQOL-Bref). In addition, DSM-IV axis I and II diagnoses were obtained. Comparisons were made between scores of the psychiatric outpatients, diagnostic subgroups within this population, and the scores of a general population. Results: Compared with the general population, psychiatric outpatients scored significantly worse on all aspects of QOL. Within the group of outpatients, participants with DSM-IV diagnoses had worse scores than those without. Participants with comorbidity had the worst QOL. Conclusions: It is concluded that QOL scores are negatively related to both the presence and the severity of psychopathology, and that the presence of a personality disorder plays a role in subjectively experienced QOL.

ABSTRACT Introduction Psoriasis is an inflammatory skin disease, which may be persistent, disfiguring, and stigmatizing. The disease is frequent, with prevalence estimates ranging from 0.3 to 2.5%. It is characterized by thick, red, scaly lesion that may appear on any part of the body. Psoriasis is associated with significant psychological and psychiatric morbidity, experience of stigmatization, and decreased health-related quality of life (QOL). Aims and Objectives The aims of this study were to estimate psychiatric morbidity and QOL in patients with psoriasis and to study the specified demographic, psychological, social, and illness-related correlates of psychiatric morbidity and QOL. Materials and methods The study group consisted of 100 consecutive patients suffering from psoriasis and healthy controls. The assessment was done using General Health Questionnaire 12 items (GHQ-12), Psoriasis Area and Severity Index (PASI) scale, Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS), and the World Health Organization Quality of Life BREF scale (WHOQOL-BREF). Patients were also subjected to clinical psychiatric examination. Only those subjects who scored ≥3 on GHQ-12 scale were administered HADS and WHOQOL-BREF. Results This study revealed statistically significant association between number of relapses and depression score and between severity of skin lesions (PASI score) and depressive score. Conclusion Psoriasis markedly worsens the global well-being of patients and their cohabitants, who experienced an impairment of their QOL and higher levels of anxiety and depression. This cross-sectional descriptive study was initiated to investigate the relationship between physical activity and perceived quality of life in a lower-limb amputee population. The objective was to show which aspects of physical activity were most strongly linked to quality-of-life factors in this special patient group. The outcome measurements were two questionnaires: a section of the Trinity Amputation and Prosthetic Experience Scales (TAPES) and the World Health Organization Quality-of-Life Scale (WHOQOL-Bref). The former measures activity restriction and has Athletic, Functional, and Social subscales. The latter includes Physical, Psychological, Social, and Environmental domains, and measures the individual's perception of their quality of life. The two questionnaires were sent by post to 75 male and female participants with either trans-tibial or trans-femoral amputation who were receiving prosthetic care from a Glasgow-based rehabilitation and mobility centre and who met the inclusion criteria. All participants were over 18 years of age (mean age 66 years). In total, 25 participants returned the questionnaires—a response rate of 33%. According to analysis, 8 of the 12 relationships found were statistically significant. There was a very strong correlation between scores on the social elements of each questionnaire. The correlations between scores on the functional and athletic elements of the TAPES questionnaire and scores on the social element of the WHOQOL-Bref questionnaire were less strong. Our findings support the need for greater acknowledgement by healthcare professionals involved in the care of those with amputation about the importance of the patient's social relationships with friends and family. Education about the importance of increasing and maintaining a level of physical activity conducive to health benefits should be implemented within a supportive sociable environment for the patient with lower-limb amputation.

In this research it was aimed to examine of the quality of life according to physical activity status of parents who have disabled individual. In the study using the descriptive survey model, convenience sampling was used for the creation of the sample. The parents of 164 disabled individuals(132 mother; =40,5±8,90) ve 32 father; =46,21±9,74) who attended to various special education institutions in Sakarya province participated in the research. The children of the participating families have autism, mental, visual, hearing and physical disabilities. In this study, a Family Information Form, which was prepared by the researcher, was used to reach the demographic informations of parents. With the aim of measuring the quality of life in parents, World Health Organization Quality of Life-Bref Form (WHOQOL-BREF), which was adopted to Turkish by Eser and his friends (1999) and for measuring the level of physical activity of parents, International Physical Activity Questionnaire-Short Form (IPAQ), which was adoped to Turkish by Öztürk (2005) were used in the study. All data were collected by face-to-face interview technique. WHOQOL-BREF scale consists of 5 sub-dimensions including the physical area, psychological area, social area, environmental area and environmental TR area created by adding a question in Turkish adaptation and 27 questions. The Cronbach's alpha coefficient of physical area subscale is .77., psychological area subscale is .71, social area is .61, environmental area is .81 and environmental area Turkey is .78. IPAQ self-administered 'last 7 days' short form was used in this study. The form provides information on time spent on walking, moderate-severe and violent activities. The calculation of the total score of the short form is based on the sum of time (minutes) and frequency (days) (Öztürk, 2005). After the descriptive statistical processes had been applied in the  analysis of datas, an independent t-test and chi-square test to detect from which groups the differences between the groups originate. Data was evaluated by using SPSS for Windows 15 software. As a result, the fact that the quality of life parents who have disabled individual and doing sport was found to be at a higher level of those who have individual but not doing sport. In addition to this doing sport was detected to increase the quality of life parents who have a disabled individual. As a result, it is thought that the parents of physically active parents have higher quality of life and physical activity levels and as a result they will provide a better and healthier life for their children.Their families are thought to be the first step in raising awareness and guiding them in order to enable them to live as healthy families and to raise healthy individuals.

Faced with the demonstrated need to engage in physical activity (PA), lack of time is the argument commonly used to justify low or non-existent levels of PA. Underlying this argument, the accomplishment of procrastination behaviour seems to be related to the less time dedicated to practicing PA and the low perception of the quality of life. With this in mind, the purpose of this study is to show that dedicating different amounts of time to PA affects the perceived quality of life and the widespread problem of procrastination. We hypothesise that greater time investment in PA is related to greater perceived quality of life and less procrastination. In all, 621 practitioners of PA (347 men, 274 women) between 18 and 83 years old (M = 35.43, SD = 14.45) filled out validated versions of the World Health Organization quality of life assessment (WHOQOL-BREF) and the Pure Procrastination Scale. Results showed that people who do enough PA have a more positive perception of the quality of life in the domains of physical and psychological health; this perception, in turn, is related to lower levels of procrastination. Likewise, socio-demographic characteristics such as gender and the main activity presented significant associations with various quality of life domains and procrastination. In sum, the benefits of improvements in quality of life and reductions in procrastination identified in this study are sensitive to the time spent on PA, which suggests that a strategy to promote the practice of PA would improve time management and, thus, counteract procrastination.
