The first chapter locates Milton High School within national efforts to install militarized regimes of discipline in public education through the corporate takeover of schools, wage war under the banner of national security, and draw young people into the war-making business through fear by examining the genealogies of neoliberal school reform, zero-tolerance school policies, school militarization, and fear in U.S. politics. Knitting these strands together lends itself to an understanding of how the Milton school staff thought about the shifting purposes of education, the needs of their students, and the role of national security in their daily lives.

In the Australian education system, there are substantial class inequalities in educational outcomes and transitions. These inequalities persist despite increased choice and individual opportunity for young people. This article explores high school students’ experiences of class in a social context they largely believe to be a meritocracy. Specifically, it asks: how does class shape young people’s thinking and decision-making about their post-school futures? I use Bourdieu’s ‘habitus’ as a frame to understand the role of class in young people’s lives, stressing its generative and heterogeneous aspects. Drawing on qualitative-led mixed methods research, this article argues that young people have internalised the ‘doxa’ of meritocracy, agency and ambition, conceiving of themselves as individual agents in this context. However, risk and security, opportunities and constraints, are not distributed equally in a class-stratified society. Young people from working-class backgrounds more commonly imagine insecure, uncertain futures.

В статье обсуждаются вопросы, связанные с особенностями профессионального выбора выпускников общеобразовательных организаций. Представлены результаты исследования, позволяющие определить роль осознанной саморегуляции активности молодых людей, оказавшихся в ситуации профессионального выбора (на примере студентов педагогического вуза). В исследовании приняли участие 302 студента первого курса, обучающихся по направлению подготовки 44.03.01 «Педагогическое образование». В качестве инструментария были использованы методика «Мотивация учения студентов педагогического вуза» С. А. Пакулиной и М. В. Овчинникова и опросник «Стиль саморегуляции поведения» В. И. Моросановой. Данные, полученные в процессе исследования, были структурированы, обработаны и проинтерпретированы с применением математических методов. Было установлено, что студенты первого курса, совершившие при поступлении в вуз профессиональный выбор с учетом своих интересов и склонностей, обладают сформировавшейся потребностью продумывать способы своих действий и поведения для достижения намеченных целей, а план их действий отличается детализированностью и развернутостью. Также им свойственны самостоятельность при проектировании способов достижения индивидуальных целей, гибкость в случае возникновения непредвиденных обстоятельств, развитая адекватная оценка себя и полученных результатов. По итогам исследования был сделан вывод о том, что наличие сформированной системы осознанной саморегуляции произвольной активности у индивида, находящегося на этапе выбора профессии, позволяет совершить более правильный профессиональный выбор, что, в свою очередь, является одним из условий актуализации профессионально-личностного потенциала. The article discusses issues related to the peculiarities of the professional choice of graduates of public education organizations. There are results of the study presented, which allow us to determine the role of conscious self-regulation of the activity of young people who find themselves in a situation of having to make a professional choice (on the example of students of a pedagogical university). The research involved 302 first-year students studying in the field of training 44.03.01 «Pedagogical Education». As research tools, the «Motivation of teaching pedagogical university students» methodology by S.А. Pakulina and M.V. Ovchinnikov and the questionnaire «Style of self-regulation of behaviour» by V.I. Morosanova were used. The data obtained during the research were organized, processed and interpreted using mathematical methods. It was found that first-year students who, upon entering the university, made a professional choice more consciously, taking into account their interests and inclinations have a well-developed need to think through their actions and behaviour to achieve their goals and their action plan is detailed. They are also characterized by independence in designing an action plan to achieve individual goals, flexibility in the situation of unforeseen circumstances, an advanced adequate assessment of themselves and the results they achieved. As the main conclusion, the following is formulated: the possession of a developed system of conscious self-regulation of arbitrary activity in an individual who is at the stage of choosing a profession allows him to make an adequate professional choice, which, in turn, is one of the conditions for the actualization of professional and personal potential.

Lualhati Bautista's Dekada '70 (1983) is a mainstay of Philippine high school reading. It tells the story of Amanda Bartolome and her five sons during the titular decade as they live under the shadow of Martial Law. And while youth activism is at the core of Dekada's narrative, existing scholarship on the book does not adequately reflect this. This article begins the work of addressing this gap by identifying schemas of Filipino children's and young people's participation in the socio-political sphere through the characters of the Bartolome brothers and reading them through the lens of Diane M. Rodgers's typology of children as social movement participants.

Black girls regularly experience gendered, racial structural violence, not just from formal systems of law enforcement, but throughout their daily lives. School is one of the most central and potentially damaging sites for Black girls in this regard. In this paper, I draw attention to the role of the beauty salon as a space of renewal for Black women and girls as they navigate systems of oppression in their daily lives and report on the ways in which a specific beauty salon in Chesterfield County, Virginia, supported a group of Black high school girls. The study focuses on the exposure of Black girls to carceral measures in school settings and speaks to the role of African-American beauty salons as spaces where collective care from violence can manifest and strategies to interrupt racialized gendered violence against Black girls can emerge. As Co-Investigator of this study funded by the Department of Justice, I created the “scholar-artist-activist lab,” consisting of a small group of undergraduate and graduate students facilitating workshops with a mixed gender group of Black high-school students, to discuss, interact, and participate in social justice-centered exercises. I focus here on the experiences of the Black girls who participated in the study.

Abstract Background In France, young people do not participate in the development of health policy. The latter is built on a representation of the young person who, because of his age, cannot have an opinion and proposals for his health and improve that of others. However, different young people are involved in health actions and propose improvements for the health system and prevention. The communication concerns the ’Re’Pairs Santé’, young people who are committed with Unis-Cité, a national association, to developing health actions with other young people. Methods 20 ’Re’Pairs santé’ were interviewed in 3 French cities on their motivation for this engagement. Similarly, 80 young beneficiaries of their actions were met in focus groups to get their perception of Re’Pairs santé. Results The engagement of Re’Pairs santé is part of a dimension of solidarity, and on their experience as young people to change the way adults and public policies are represented. For other young people, if there is an improvement in their health knowledge, half of them are involved in other local associations and/or are involved in changing health within their own structure. Conclusions Health is not a minority issue both in the daily lives of young people and as a potential source of engagement. The Re’Pairs santé investment allows other young people to get involved in other structures. Thus, the social impact is not limited to the transmission of health information but promotes social cohesion and the development of social capital. The place and role of young people in the development of public health policies must be better valued and legitimized in order to better meet their expectations but also to destigmatize a population that has many resources. Key messages Fostering youth engagement on health. Youth should be considered as a resource for health policies.

(Inter)nationalist Popular Education: Security Policy, Nationalism and Advocacy in the Swedish Folk High Schools’ Action on Development Issues 1950-1969Folk High Schools in Sweden have a long history of engaging internationally, especially as regards courses on development studies (u-landslinjer) that emerged in the late sixties. The purpose of this article is to track some of the discourses about internationalisation, development and aid that preceded those courses, as well as to scrutinise ideas of the role of the Folk High School (folkhögskola) in the emerging field of development aid. Analysing material from Tidskrift för svenska folkhögskolan (Journal of the Swedish Folk High School) between 1950 and 1969, the study shows that the discourse on internationalism takes its starting point from an already established nationalism and nordism. National security also arises as an argument for engaging in development issues. The analysis also shows that there is a shift in the role of the Folk High School in the evolving development work; from “helping” to “advocating.” The results raise questions about how we can understand today’s Folk High School courses on global development against the background of the debates of the fifties and sixties.

AbstractThe article is a continuation of research conducted in 2016–2017, whose goal was to determine expectations and needs of young people regarding forests. In this study, attention is focused on different preferences of high-school students and university students. Frequency and reasons for which high-school students visit forests have been studied. Forms of forest activities preferred by the respondents as well as familiarity of young people with the sanitary state of the woodlands, the role of biocoenosis in the ecosystem and its significance for people have been analysed. The respondents’ knowledge of rules to be followed when being in a forest, use of its resources and major threats to this ecosystem have been studied.

Resumo: O presente artigo investiga a Base Nacional Comum Curricular- BNCC, a flexibilização do currículo e a ideia de protagonismo juvenil, expressa por meio da Reforma do Ensino Médio, implantada no ano de 2017. A Metodologia utilizada foi a pesquisa bibliográfica de caráter qualitativo, tendo como referenciais os documentos que tratam sobre a reforma. It bases its reflections on Dialectical and Historical Materialism, to comprehend historical and discursive elements that allow the understanding that the reform is aligned to a neoliberal discourse. Earing the word education is certainly no stranger to the public. Education is addressed with school and learning. The word education in terms of language is derived from the word "pedagogy" namely "paid" which means child and "agogos" which means guiding. So pedagogy or education is the science of guiding children. Education can also be defined as a process of changing the attitude and behavior of a person or group in an effort to mature a human being or a student through teaching and training efforts. The word management is often heard in our daily lives. Management is used to assist us in doing things. The role of management is needed in daily life which is intended to regulate all work. Through management, all work can be done and done well and systematically. We usually get quality when we discuss about industries related to the provision or delivery of services. The field of education is one area that provides services to its customers. The intended customers in the world of education are divided into 3 groups, namely primary customers (directly involved, namely students), secondary customers (who support education such as parents), and tertiary customers (indirectly involved but have an important role in education, namely employees, community, and government).
