Translation studies of children’s literature deserve meticulous attention today not only in the wake of active global publishing activity of books for children but due to the culture-specific information the latter may contain. Fairy tales are usually the first narratives children are introduced to and often these stories with a long-reproduction history reveal some features of national culture that form a child’s worldview. From this perspective, the research is set out to identify culture-specific items in fairy tales that originated from oral tradition and to determine what translation procedures should be used and what factors may influence the choice of the translation method. The corpus of the research includes the titles of East Slavic fairy tales limited by culture-specific items and their translations into English and German. Despite the period when translations were made and gender of translators, findings of our research show that in both languages source language-oriented translation procedures prevail in rendering proper names with denotative meaning, and target language-oriented translation methods are dominant for culture-specific common expressions and descriptive elements of proper names. The current research has allowed us to distinguish the factors that may influence the choice of a translation procedure. To this end, a scale of source language- and target language-oriented translation strategies of culture-specific items from fairy tales with the account of target reader’s age and genre has been provided for the translators to reveal the efficiency of certain translation procedures. Given the above, the study of culture-specific items in fairy tales requires a greater focus and thus further lines of inquiry are suggested in this paper.

Summary In this paper, I focused on the translation work by František Benhart which, due to its extensiveness, was of crucial importance to the reception of Slovenian literature in the Czech cultural environment of the second half of the 20th century. The aim of this study is the linguistic analysis of the literary translations of selected literary works of the canon of Slovenian literature into Czech. Translation can be considered to be a cultural transposition, i. e. a transfer of the text and cultural environment from the source language into the text and cultural environment of the target language. In the analyses, I focused on some partial issues that either dominated in the particular text (expressivity, phraseology, idiomatic or proper names) or occurred across the texts analysed (realia) and in this context, I searched for his specific translation solutions. I also examined short excerpts of the original text and its translated counterpart looking for the presence of stylistically marked elements. Based on the results of individual analyses, I presented Benhart’s specific translation approaches and I attempted to summarize and indicate the basic features of his translation method. Furthermore, my second objective was to point out the possible consequences of Benhart’s translation method for the reception of the Slovenian literature in the Czech cultural environment.

Machine Translation (MT) is used for giving a translation from a source language to a target language. Machine translation simply translates text or speech from one language to another language, but this process is not sufficient to give the perfect translation of a text due to the requirement of identification of whole expressions and their direct counterparts. Neural Machine Translation (NMT) is one of the most standard machine translation methods, which has made great progress in the recent years especially in non-universal languages. However, local language translation software for other foreign languages is limited and needs improving. In this paper, the Chinese language is translated to the Urdu language with the help of Open Neural Machine Translation (OpenNMT) in Deep Learning. Firstly, a Chineseto Urdu language sentences datasets were established and supported with Seven million sentences. After that, these datasets were trained by using the Open Neural Machine Translation (OpenNMT) method. At the final stage, the translation was compared to the desired translation with the help of the Bleu Score Method.

The purpose of the research was to analyze the idiomatic translation found in “The Twilight Saga Breaking Dawn” By Stephanie Meyer and “Awal Yang Baru” Translated By Monica Dwi Chresnayani. The result of the research is the idiomatic translations method which is found in the novel and analyzed by using the theory of translation from Newmark. Based on the data analysis, the writer found some proofs that the data which were translated used idiomatic translation method. In analyzing translation process, the writer compared with other translation methods. The purpose was  that the writer showed the translation method used by the translator was idiomatic translation method. In translation, the translator paid attention to the meaning of source language so that the message in target language can be received by the readers.

Abstract: Ideology has a twofold sense in advertising. One is general and aims to standardize the consumers' needs and traits by globalized means to persuade them to buy the products. The other is specific whereby the advertisement campaigns can introduce, reinforce and /or challenge some ideological values as of politics, religion, race and gender. To sell globally, advertisements are translated into other languages. This requires adjusting the ideological values to the Target Language (TL) audience. When the ideological dimension of the TL is given priority, transcreation, instead of translation per se, becomes the best choice. Unlike the traditional translator who is expected to be faithful to the Source Language (SL), the transcreator should always maintain proximity to the TL ideology so as to avoid unwanted sensitivities of the TL audience and should adopt creative ideas in order to achieve resonance in the TL. The present paper aims to investigate the implications of advertising ideology for transcreation into Arabic. The global advertisement campaigners seem to be aware that Arabic and Islam represent a unified ideology represented in values of national identity, politics and gender. Most transcreation of these campaigns have achieved both proximity to the TL audience and creativity of ideas that do not clash with the ideological status quo in the Arab World. But despite the laudable reputation of transcreation nowadays in the Translation Studies literature as the best strategy of advertisement translation, it looks like it cannot escape the twofold sense of ideology in those texts. While it does embrace diversity of ideological values of SL and TL, an advertisement campaign transcreation is unable to outbalance the general and more solid ideology of standardizing the consumers' needs and motives.

The folklore of the Salatiga legend needs to be disseminated in the archipelago so that these cultural values ??can be understood by people from various ethnic groups in Indonesia using Indonesian. In the process of translating the legend (from Javanese Krama into Indonesian) it is necessary to have an appropriate translation method so that the message to be conveyed in the source language (BS) matches the target language (BT). This research aims to investigate the translation method used in the Salatiga Legend and explore the cultural ideology that affects the translator in translating the Salatiga Legend. In this research, only the translation of the word or phrase which is related to the translation is examined. This research is a descriptive qualitative research with content analysis method. Data processing techniques using literature study, see, and note. To test the validity of the data in the study used triangulation models, namely data triangulation, theory triangulation, and expert triangulation. The results of the research are the dominant translation methods used are equality and borrowing, while the transposition method is not found. The finding, translation methods used by translators in the Salatiga Legend story, especially those relating to the translation units of words and phrases of objects, are dominated by the equality method. In this study also no transposition method was found.

Translation procedure is a procedure or a method to translate the unit of language from the source language to the target language. Every linguistic part needs to be translated. It means including the proper names in the literary work. This study is aimed at identifying and analyzing the types of the proper name and their translation procedures in the novel entitled Pembunuhan di Orient Express. The problems in this study are discussed based on the theory of proper name and the theory of the translation procedure by Newmark (1988). The method used to collect the data was documentation method. This study applied the descriptive qualitative method in analyzing the data. The result of the analysis was presented using an informal method. The analysis showed three types of proper names in the data sources. They are people’s names, the name of an object, and the geographical term. The translator uses seven methods from 18 translation procedures that were proposed by Newmark (1988).

The object of research is linguistic informativity of the macrostructure of language reference books. The research material is bilingual (Russian-Tatar and Russian-Chinese) dictionaries of various types of the end of the 20th – beginning of the 21st cc. The paper presents the classification including various features of the existing bilingual dictionaries. Bilingual linguography comprises various types of anguage reference books. Most of the language reference books analyzed in this paper are monoscopal, with one source language and one target language. One of the key notions of linguography, as well as the essential component of a language reference book, is the vocabulary. One has to admit that in the modern linguography there is still no distinct objective criterion for selecting words for a language reference book. When composing a vocabulary, subjective factors play a great role. When researching the Russian-foreign language reference books, we revealed a number of mistakes and drawbacks referring to the vocabulary: a) unjustified inclusion of units into the vocabulary, b) unjustified absence of units in the vocabulary, c) orthographic mistakes, d) incorrect use of illustrative material (pictures, photos, etc.). There is no single established opinion as to what information a learner’s dictionary should include. It is important to remember that inclusion of specific information depends on the dictionary’s addressee and purpose.

There are many ways that could be done to introduce unique culture of a country to the international world; one of them is through translation works.  This can be seen through Japanese literary works, which are translated into other languages.  Botchan is one of the best literary works from Natsume Soseki that was translated into several languages, including Indonesian language, with the title of the translation Botchan Si Anak Bengal by Jonjon Johana. This novel tells the story about the life of Botchan, a teacher, who faces several conflicts. In this novel, there are many cultural terms so that when they are translated, they would trigger some difficulties because some of the terms still do not have equivalences in target language.  The material cultural terms include foods, clothes, houses and their parts, places, and means of transportation. They can be found in the words geisha, kimono, soba, and so on. This research analyzed the equivalence in the translation with the informant as the benchmark to know whether the message in the target text is equivalent with the source text. This method is based on dynamic equivalence concept by Nida and Taber (1974:12). Based on the informant, the methods and techniques used by translator in maintaining the equivalence of message were analyzed. The used theory was the translation methods for cultural terms by Newmark (1988) and translation techniques by Catford (1965) and Hoed (2006).The research showed that the cultural terms were not easy to translate since they were related to the context of culture in the source language. It can be seen from the existing translation data showing two characteristics of equivalent translation that can be achieved through several methods, the understanding of language and culture of source language and target language; the use of suitable translation procedure and technique (transference, cultural equivalence, descriptive translation, transposition, modulation, additional explanation, and standard translation); and the right choice of word based on the intention of the author of novel.

Tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk mengungkapkan dan mendeskripsikan metode-metode penerjemahan metafora dalam novel Peter Pan karya J.M. Barrie. Hal itu disebabkan oleh metafora merupakan bahasa figuratif yang dalam proses penerjemahannya ditemukan kesulitan untuk mencari kesepadanannya dalam bahasa sasaran. Dalam penelitian ini, proses penerjemahan tersebut dianalisis melalui delapan metode penerjemahan, yakni penerjemahan kata per kata, penerjemahan literal, penerjemahan setia, penerjemahan semantis, penerjemahan komunikatif, penerjemahan idiomatis, penerjemahan bebas, dan penerjemahan adaptasi. Sementara itu, penelitian ini merupakan penelitian deskriptif komparatif, yaitu membandingkan metafora dalam novel Inggris dalam novel Peter Pan dengan terjemahan metafora dalam novel terjemahan berbahasa Indonesia. Data metafora dianalisis secara kualitatif berdasarkan metode penerjemahannya. Hasil analisis menunjukkan bahwa (1) perbedaan sistem kebahasaan serta pola pikir pengguna bahasa sumber dengan bahasa sasaran menyebabkan tidak semua metafora dapat diterjemahkan dengan menggunakan padanan metafora dalam bahasa sasaran dan (2) dengan menggunakan metafora yang tepat, penerjemah dapat menyampaikan berbagai makna metafora teks sumber ke dalam teks sasaran tanpa mengubah makna dan citranya.Metaphor is a figurative language whose formation is influenced by cultural background thus the equivalent of source language cannot necessarily be found in the target language. The application of the translation methods can affect the result of translation equivalent.  Therefore, this research aims to identify and describe the methods of metaphor translation in the J.M. Barrie’s novel, “Peter Pan”. This is a comparative research since it compares the metaphors found in the English source novel with their translations in its Indonesian translated novel. The metaphorical expressions used as the data are in the form of word, phrase, and clause which were taken purposively and were analyzed descriptively qualitatively based on Newmark’s theory of translation methods. The result shows that (1) there are eight translation methods which are used by the translator such as word-for-word translation, literal translation, faithful translation, semantic translation, communicative translation, idiomatic translation, free translation, and adaptation translation; (2) the difference in the linguistic system between the source language and the target language causes not all the metaphorical expressions are able to be translated with the equivalent metaphorical expressions; and (3) translation equivalent can be achieved if the translator is able to adjust the translation methods with the type of metaphorical expressions to be translated.

AbstractThis research aims to describe  the translation procedures, methods, and ideology  applied to translate novel Negeri 5 Menara,and assess the impact of the ideology on equivalence. This research is using qualitative approach and content analysis. The source of data for this research consists of documents that  refer to novel  Negeri 5 Menara and its translation in English. The units of analysis of this  research data comprise of words, phrases, sentences, and dialogue taken from Negeri 5 Menara Ahmad Fuadi’s Work and its translation (The Land of 5 Towers) by Angie Kilbane. Findings of this research show followings. First, translation procedures were used 90 times  to render Negeri 5 Menara into English.  On the basis of the frequent use of each translation procedures, functional equivalent (20) appears to be first rank, followed by cultural equivalent (19), reduction and couplets (10), transference and naturalization (7), descriptive equivalent (6), notes (4), transposition (3), and  modulation and compensation (2). Second, theoretically, transference and naturalisation are oriented to source language while cultural equivalent, functional equivalent, descriptive equivalen, transposition, modulation, compensation, reduction, couplets, and notes are oriented to target language. This means that the translator tended to choose adaptation, free, idiomatic, and communicative methods. Third, the use of translation procedures and the selection the translation methods tend to be based on the adoption of the ideology of domestication. Fourth, in terms of the equivalence of the translations, it was found that 80 data were accurately translated and 10 data were inaccurately translated. Therefore, the domestication ideology has a good impact to the quality of translations.Keywords: ideology of translations, translation method, translation procedure, culture.
